buffett comes to hershey - Parrotheads in Amish Paradise
Volume 18, Issue 4 May 2014 Award winning newsletter of the Parrotheads in Amish Paradise BUFFETT COMES TO HERSHEY Inside this issue FC Buffett 2 View from the Poop Deck/ Purser’s Log 3 Letter from the Editor 4 Cruise News 5 Phriends for Mike 6 Shark Bites 7 Shark Bites 8 Tour Dates/Drive-In 9 Senators Fan Club/ Treasure 10 Captain and Crew/Jake’s Journal After many years of wishing and hoping and praying, we FINALLY get a local show!! Jimmy Buffett will TropROCK Hershey Giant Stadium on August 30, 2014! Parrotheads in Paradise get to share 300 club tickets for this show. Each person possessing one of these tickets MUST (I repeat MUST) be a card carrying, dues paid, member in good standing of a PHiP sanctioned Parrothead Club. Does this mean that the Amish get as many tickets as we want? Alas, it does not. Tickets are assigned to our regional clubs based on percentages of members. If there are unclaimed club tickets, they can be distributed amongst the clubs with a higher number of requests. Remember those pesky Parrot Points that we tally up for an award at the Holiday Party? Well, here’s where they come in to play. If we have more requests than tickets, we assign tickets based on totals of Parrot Points. You earn your Parrot Points by participating in meetings, charity events or anything that is sponsored by the club. Yes, you get rewards for having PHUN! Shauna Manana will be taking the requests for our club tickets. If we have to go to Parrot Points, we will. Here’s to hoping you participated in the past year! Lynn Stewart Krieger is regional ticket coordinator. Shauna will report our totals to her, then we get our assignments. It is a thankless and hectic job for both of them. Ticket requests must be submitted by May 16 and once tickets are requested, you and the club are on the hook to pay for them. So, please don’t request if you’re not sure you can make it or pay it. Barb Tyree is coordinating a tailgate for the event and details are taking shape. It may be decided that the safest option is an off-site tailgate where we will be permitted to cook-out and imbibe with wild abandon, unless we get the update that Hershey will allow tailgating. The ticket to tailgate at Hershey is to maintain some decorum, so...we’ll see where we go with that. More info to come out as the time approaches. In the meantime, anyone interested in helping Barb can contact her at [email protected]. It will be a combo tailgate with our Hanover Phriends, who always know how to have a good time. Let’s show them that the Amish can do it right, too! The second part of this amazing news is the rumor (unconfirmed by this editor) that Zac Brown Band will take the Giant Field on Sunday, August 31, as well. (Do I smell a guest appearance at Zac’s show?) So, get your livers in training, pholks for a Labor Day weekend that will be AMAZING! PHINS UP! Volume 18, Issue 4 Page 2 Tequila Times View From The Poop Deck We don’t know yet if the Hershey venue will tolerate a traditional tailgate so we Well, here I am missing you all as I am not here at the May Club Social. We have been allocated a total of 300 for the Krieger Mountain House Party on August 10 for $20 with a limit of 125 being sold. Proceeds benefit the Kelly Beck tickets to use between all those clubs. Tickets must be purchased and USED by club members in good standing and cost Life Fund. See Sue McCaughey and get your tickets. We’ll have a blast. Tequila Times As the RAINN ‘Em In event approaches on June 1, I’ve been thinking a lot about the charity and the issue of sexual assault. It is not an issue that’s glamorous or has the high visibility of the cancer causes. It doesn’t involve adorable animals or children with disabilities. Yet it is an issue that truly affects more of you than you think. Statistically, 1 in 4 adult women report having been sexually assaulted in their life. Those are just the ones who report it. The real tragedy is for those who never report it. 60% of victims will never report the attack. Why don’t they seek help or report? This is a crime that shakes the emotional foundation of the victim in a way no other crime does. Since approximately 2/3 of victims of assault know their attacker and have some contact with them outside of the crime, there are myriad reasons they don’t report. 38% of rapists are an acquaintance or a friend. Frequently, the victim fears the social repercussions of reporting the attack. This is especially true if the assailant is a family member, or close friend of the family, as is usually the case when children are involved. 44% of sexual assault victims are under the age of 18. 15% of them are under the age of 12! When the victim is a child, it can trigger emotional instability, depression, anxiety and the resulting health issues that accompany those disorders. A child who is assaulted may never develop a healthy view of their sexuality or even be able to identify what a healthy intimate relationship is. They may live their life with distrust and fear. They may live in shame and embarrassment, thinking that they somehow caused the assault, or were culpable in some way. Bringing this back to my original thought of how it affects all of us…if you consider that the Parrotheads in Amish Paradise have approximately 60 women members, that means that statistically about 15 of our members have been sexually assaulted in their life. Women who are assaulted don’t look different than anyone else. Often, the victim carries the pain with her every day, everywhere she goes. She may be the quiet one who doesn’t socialize much or the one who is all party, all the time. She may be responsible and sensible. She may seem perfectly balanced on the outside, but in private, or on the inside is an emotional wreck. Let us not forget the men—1 in 33 men have experienced an attempted or completed rape. That probably means that there are one or two men who fit this profile right here in the room. Look around this room and you will undoubtedly see people who have been hurt by someone they know. RAINN is an organization that seeks to remove the barriers to reporting assault. In no other violent crime are people ashamed or embarrassed to report their attack. Why is that? RAINN helps victims receive treatment and gives support to those who have been assaulted. This is a solid opportunity for us to use our “Party with a Purpose” motto to support a cause that can help people we know and perhaps help to educate and prevent the crime that so deeply affects our friends and loved ones. Please show your support by riding a horse, sponsoring the team, or coming out to B2B in Manheim on June 1. Though the cause is serious, the event is an opportunity to have a lot of fun. John and Dixie Winters always bring a good spread and believe me; you will laugh until your cheeks hurt watching your fellow Parrotheads bouncing around the bases on an inflatable horse! Did someone say, “Margaritas”? Contact Dixie Winters to find out how you can help! Dixie’s email is [email protected] or you can stop by and talk to her at the social. Many of you saw Southern Drawl at the Street Fair last year at MOTM. They have only gotten better! great raffle prize! The Amish attendees took the prize for biggest group in attendance. You’ll get to see what we won at the social this month. It’s going to be a Highlight of the night may have been the after show gathering in the Harmon’s room back at the Crowne Plaza. The band was across the hall and came over for some beverages and chat. We enjoyed hanging with them so much, we forgot to get pictures. Have to say their lead guitar player, David, is a great, soft-spoken guy. There was talk of hunting, fishing and a variety of deeper subjects--definitely a down-to-earth dude. Check the band out next time you can—it was worth the trip! And remember, you can’t twerk and drink, unless you’re trying to cure hiccups! They also sponsor the Welcome Back Senators Dinner each year. Come out to a game and support the local team and to get more information on the Senators Fan Club see Mary Chopak. The April Road Clean Up happened on a gorgeous Saturday before Easter. Though we were a little short on volunteers, we did a fine job of picking up the mess that winter left behind.
