The weather was ideal and the task was accomplished in no time at all. I think everyone was anxious to chug on over to the Blue Room in Middletown afterwards for lunch, college football on TV, and a festive adult beverage or two. As usual, a few interesting treasures were found. Larry found a small ESPN football. Steve found a Van Halen CD. Tim found some pictures of ladies sporting very skimpy outfits (Anna was overjoyed). PennDOT has recognized the Parrotheads in Amish Paradise as 10-year participants. It’s good to be us! Hats off to everyone who helped out this year and especially to Rick Clapper for coordinating the effort. 2011 MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL & REBATE The news magazine of the Parrotheads in Amish Paradise Well – it’s that time of the year again - time to renew your PHIAP membership for 2011. Volume 14, Issue 10 Page 2 Tequila Times Captain’s Log OK, I’m under strict orders to get the Captain’s Log turned in before most of the Tequila Times crew heads for Key West. Who Captain Patrice knew that the Tequila Times editor could order around the Captain? Sad but true. We’ve got some exciting events coming up in the next few months that I want to let everyone know about, especially our new members. We ended 2009 with 117 paid members and now have 145 members. Math sucks but that gives us almost 30 new members who might not be familiar with these annual events. First up is Peter Mayer’s Stars & Promises Show-The Story of Christmas. You won’t find a more beautiful holiday event than this one. If you want to get away from the hype-hype-hype-buy-buy-buy-rush-rush-rush nuttiness that can overwhelm us at this time of year, come to this show. The beauty of the music, the talent of the musicians, and Peter’s peaceful aura will put you in the true holiday spirit. This year’s show will be Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 7 PM at the Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster. Check out Shark Bites in this issue for more information or talk to Sue McCaughey. At the other end of the holiday spectrum, in terms of peacefulness and spirit, is our own “The Holidays Aren’t Over Until We Say They’re Over” Holiday Party. This is one of the most fun events we put on all year. The party is going to be held on Saturday, January 8 (gee, I think that’s also someone’s wedding anniversary) at Liberty Forge in Mechanicsburg. Doors open at 6 PM. There will be a delicious dinner provided by Altland House. Entertainment will be provided by the Tropical Soul Trio (Dennis, Heather & Dave), also known as Tropical Soul 3.0. Make sure you have your dancing shoes on. They’ve promised us a rockin’ good time. We will also have our traditional Chinese Gift Exchange. If you want to participate, bring a wrapped gift with a value of around $15. You don’t have to have to take part in gift exchange if you don’t want to but it’s lots of fun. The holiday party is open to everyone, so bring your friends, neighbors, family. Tickets will be $22 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Again, you’ll find more information in the Shark Bites or ask Cruisin’ Dan. As everyone probably knows by now, I really hate winter but our wintertime club events make it a little more bearable. Fast Breaking News from MOTM!! Purser Scott just called to report that our very own Tequila Times has once again taken first place for best club newsletter!! We submitted our large 14 page May 2010 newsletter for consideration. Thank you to the tireless staff of the TT including Jane Hess, Dani Hoy, Jeff Slaugh, Barb Tyree and Shauna Manana. And a BIG THANK YOU from the staff to all the Amish Parrotheads for taking pictures and writing articles. Without you, there would be no newsletter, let alone a two-time award winning newsletter! They’re Back!! Happy Shark stick-on emblems should be available to our club members at a special discounted price at our next meeting. Hey they’re just in time to be used as stocking stuffers!! The Rock is located on the south end of Spain and belongs to the United Kingdom. What I found truly amazing is there are over 35,000 people living at the Rock of Gibraltar. Our group was bused in and had to “cross the border” from Spain to England and show our passports. There is a “small” town around the base of the rock and an airport which we had to drive across to enter the town. We then had to take a smaller bus to get around the steep hills and narrow streets. The rock is full of tunnels and caves and has a colorful military history. The bus stopped at St. Michael’s cave and we walked the dark cavernous passageways. Cathedral Cave is the main chamber and is so large that it is used as an auditorium for concerts. One of the main attractions at the Rock is the Barbary Apes. There are close to 200 of the wild apes roaming the rock. Some of them are quite large and can get very aggressive with visitors. They can be seen climbing on or in the buses and cars and are always looking for treats, but we were told not to touch them because they may bite. The Straits of Gibraltar connect the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and from the rock you can see Spain and Africa while standing in England. Currency is the pound and “Spanglish” is spoken which is a cross between Spanish and English. It’s ironic but one of my favorite side trips while in Spain was a trip to England! Volume 14, Issue 10 Buffett in Paris Page 4 Tequila Times By Rick Bodner W e (Brenda and Rick Bodner) recently returned from a GREAT week in Paris and Amsterdam, having used Buffett‟s UNDER THE BIG TOP September show in Paris as our excuse to party over there again! The show was FANTASTIC, in the intimate OLYMPIC Theater, with no seating on the main floor (one BIG Pit!), but for us „mature‟ Parrotheads there were reserved balcony seats which loomed almost over the stage. We were able to stand within feet of the stage for a while, then retire to our upstairs seats and enjoy the rest of the show. Tailgating was a blast! We scoped out the locale the day before the show and identified a sidewalk café/ bar adjacent to the Olympic that had the „appropriate character‟ for a Parrothead Tailgate Party. On show day, we got to the café around 1:30 pm, just before a cloudburst hit Paris, and were greeted with “hey, didn‟t we party with you here last year?” Turned out it was couples from Canada, South Florida, and Belgium who recognized us and invited us to their table under the awning (good thing – as it POURED!) By the way, we had also bumped into these same Canadians and South Florida folks one morning last February in a nearly vacant Fort Lauderdale shopping center parking lot as we were decorating our rented RV in preparation for a Buffett concert that night! As the afternoon went by, scores of Parrotheads wandered by all responding to our shouts of “FINS UP!” By 7 PM there were a few hundred Parrotheads partying in and around the café, much to the interest and delight of the locals. We met two recently retired couples from York, PA at the tailgate who were there because at the 2009 Buffett Camden show they had seen a mature couple with a sign saying “We‟re Going to Paris!” and thought that it would be fun to also do a Paris Buffett show. They were amazed when they discovered that it was we who had held up that sign last year in Camden! We invited them to join the Amish Parrothead phlock! We spent the last hour before the show mixing with the international fans who were waiting in line to enter the theater and stake claim to floor space next to the stage. We even met Pittsburgh Parrothead „Crazy Debbie‟ (a friend of Dan & Patrice) with whom we‟d corresponded but had never met. All in all, a FANTASTIC and memorable show - our 70th! Con‟t next page Volume 14, Issue 10 Page 5 Tequila Times We took the opportunity after the show to take the train to Amsterdam for a few days of sightseeing, etc. Amsterdam was delightful, interesting, and a pleasant wind-down after Paris. Canals, windmills, coffee houses, Heinekin, “red-lights” and everyone speaking English made it a very worthwhile destination but after a week in Europe, we were ready to head back to PA! (We‟re already looking forward to Buffett in Paris next year!!) Volume14, Issue 10 Page 6 Tequila Times Make it a REAL Buffett Tailgate! By Brian Rodgers Recently, it was time for me to update my car registration. I thought I would take the time to investigate a personal license plate, one of those cool ones you always see at the Buffett shows in the parking lot or hanging on the walls of your favorite beach bar. Thinking that all the cool easy ones were taken, I decided to take a look and check. Well, my first few attempts were all taken; I then checked a few websites to come up with some new ideas. Putting them through the PENNDOT Driver’s Service website, I found quite a few that were available and thought I would share these with you. If you’re willing to fork over to the state the additional $20 for the personalized plate, here’s the list! BUFF8, VOLKANO, LFINSR, PHNS2RT, PHNS2LF, PHNZ2R, PHNZ2L, VLCANNO, GONNA1A, A1A AVE, AVE A1A, 3QRTTIME, CREOLA, COCOTL, CRLRFER, CRLREFR, PHINZZ, PHINZ2R, PHINZ2L,PHAN JB, JBUFFET (and last, but not least!) TRPLSOL, TROPSOL Margaritaville Trivia Answer from October (QUESTION: The first Margaritaville restaurant and store opened in Key West in 1985. The most recent opening was in 2010 in Niagara Falls, Canada (our signed club t-shirt is on display there). How many Margaritavilles are there?) PyrateHead packs for MOTM No, the correct answer is not as many as you want there to be. The actual ANSWER is: There are 19 Margaritaville stores and restaurants (not counting the Margaritaville Beach Hotel in Pensacola Beach, FL): Key West, FL - 1985 New Orleans, LA - 1992 Negril, Jamaica – 1996 Montego Bay, Jamaica – 1996 Charleston, SC – 1998 Orlando, FL – 1999 Cancun, Mexico – 2002 Ocho Rios, Jamaica – 2002 Las Vegas, NV – 2003 Myrtle Beach, SC – 2004 Grand Turk, B.W.I. – 2006 Grand Cayman – 2006 Glendale, AZ – 2007 Cozumel, Mexico – 2007 Panama City Beach, FL – 2008 Mohegan Sun, CT – 2008 Waikiki Beach, HI – 2009 Niagara Falls, Canada – 2010 Nashville, TN – 2010 (opening soon, road trip anyone?) Patrice and I have only managed to visit the Margaritaville locations in Key West, New Orleans and Orlando so far. What about you? Drop a line to the Tequila Times to share your experiences. Having a cheeseburger and a festive adult beverage at as many Margaritaville restaurants as possible is on my “bucket list”. So far my favorite one is at Universal’s City Walk in Orlando. I sampled my first Landshark Lager sitting on the Porch of Indecision there. But even better is sitting at the Lone Palm Airport under the wing of Jimmy’s Grumman Albatross, the Hemisphere Dancer, and having a cold draft beer – a Lone Palm Ale of course. That’s right, his seaplane is parked right there! “Honestly, I’m pretty sure they’re not going to run out of rum.” Volume14, Issue 10 Page 7 Tequila Times Cruisin’ Dan’s Quick Reference Calendar (the one stop shop for event information) Fall 2010 – Part 2 Here are some of the upcoming events as 2010 draws to a close.
