Redefining Oral Rehabilitation for the Edentulous or Failing Dentate Patient Evolution of Dental Implant Therapy: Combining the Best of Procedures, Devices and Patient Care Dr. Dennis Tarnow Dr. Ernest Cholakis Dr. Clark Stanford One aspect for success we can control is the implant design we choose. Ideally, we work with systems that resist peri-implantitis. Is it the platform shift? The surface texture of the implant? The connection and/or the MicroThreads™ at the crest of bone? Possibly, the sum is greater than the parts. This statement is true for the doctor, the patient and the chosen implant system for success. Case selection, team work and implant design all impact outcomes. Long-term stability of hard and soft tissue, esthetic outcomes and restoring function to patients is the goal. Dr. Dennis Tarnow is currently Clinical Professor of Periodontology and Director of Implant Education at Columbia School of Dental Medicine. He is the former Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry. Dr. Tarnow has a certificate in Periodontics and Prosthodontics and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology. He is a recipient of the Master Clinician Award from the American Academy of Periodontology and Teacher of the Year Award from New York University. Dr. Tarnow has a private practice in New York City, and has been honored with a wing named after him at New York University College of Dentistry. He has published over one hundred articles on perioprosthodontics and implant dentistry and has coauthored three textbooks including one in 2008 titled Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry. Dr. Tarnow has lectured extensively in the United States and internationally in over thirty countries. The edentulous population continues to grow domestically as well as globally. This market has been underserved for many years, and patients have had to adapt to ill-fitting dentures. Thanks to advances in technologies and techniques, dental professionals are now able to predictably increase function, form and esthetics using an immediately-loaded, fixed, removable prosthesis. The continuous evolution of dental implant therapy has been essential to progressive patient care. Improvements to basic implant design features combined with modifications to surgical and prosthetic approaches make tooth replacement therapies more predictable and available for today’s patients. This presentation will introduce and compare a novel implantretained, fixed-removable treatment system with conventional, hybrid and overdenture alternatives. This presentation will set the stage for where we have been, where we are now and most importantly, where we are going with enhancements that will help our implant patients in the future. Dr. Ernest Cholakis obtained his DMD in 1982 from the University of Manitoba and his MBA in 2002 from the University of Chicago, Booth Graduate School of Business. He attended the very first University based “Aesthetic Continuum” at Case Western Reserve University in 1992 and followed that up with a continuing education certificate in Cosmetic Dentistry from UCLA in 1998. Dr. Cholakis is the founder and managing partner of an interdisciplinary dental group that cares for over 20,000 patients. Academically he is an Assistant Professor and Co-Director of Dental Practice Management Studies and was the Founding Chairperson of the Deans Advisory Board, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Manitoba. Dr. Cholakis is a double recipient of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, receiving the Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and the Diamond Jubilee Medal for his “significant professional achievements and philanthropic contributions to the province of Manitoba” in 2012. Dr. Clark Stanford is the Associate Dean for Research and Centennial Fund Professor for Clinical Research, Dows Institute for Dental Research and Department of Prosthodontics, College of Dentistry, University of Iowa. He holds secondary appointments in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Stanford received his BS, DDS, Certificate in Prosthodontics and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He runs the Office for Clinical Research and is Director for the Nanoscience section of the NIH Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS) at the University. He is the author of 14 book chapters, 84 published papers and more than 170 published research abstracts. He is the recipient of 15 academic awards including the 2007 State of Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence and the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award (2007). He sees patients in an intramural practice at the University with an emphasis in Prosthodontics and management of congenital anomalies. Upon completion of this program participants will: • Be familiar with implant biology, biomechanics and surface technology and how it relates to longevity in successful implant therapy. • Realize the impact of simplified techniques and new technologies that can increase confidence and competence with implant care. • Gain further knowledge of the role of implant surfaces and emerging technologies in manipulating healing around an oral implant.
