T
he global political and economic system might have been in crisis since 2008, but
over the last two years, in particular, we have been in the midst of what could be
called the perfect storm.
Economically, a crisis of credit and growth has been exacerbated by sovereign debt
concerns in Europe – and particularly in such key markets for our Group as Greece and
Spain, Italy and Ireland - that threaten the very existence of the euro.
Politically, the turmoil in our core Mediterranean market over the last year – from an
uprising in Egypt to revolution in Tunisia to war in Libya – has impacted both cargo and
passenger volumes.
Meanwhile, similar calls for freedom in the oil producing countries of the Middle East,
combined with the embargo on Iranian oil, has powered yet another surge in fuel prices,
sending bunker costs spiralling upwards once again.
Through it all, however, the Grimaldi Group has continued to generate healthy profits
on rising turnover. Indeed, over the last two years, and in the teeth of this perfect storm,
our turnover has jumped by 25% from €2 billion to €2.5 billion. And despite the impact
of rising costs, our EBITDA has also risen over the same period, from €350 million to
€450 million.
It has been a delicate and difficult task for all that, not least because of a rise in fuel
prices that has had a devastating impact on companies across our industry. Over the
last two years, our fuel costs alone have doubled to €800 million a year.
As a graphic illustration of just what that figure means, it is ten times our annual interest payments on a relatively new fleet of almost 100 vessels. It also amounts to roughly
three times the annual cost of the 8,000 people employed by the company.
Even before this latest fuel price surge, however, we were attacking this menace to our
cost structure head-on, not just at Grimaldi but at daughter companies Finnlines and
Minoan Lines.
We ordered larger fuel-efficient ships that can carry more cargo at a lower cost, put
in place a silicone painting programme across the passenger ferry fleet, adjusted our
route map and sailing schedule to suit the new realities.
The battle continues. In recent months, we have made further changes, reducing services where fuel costs were eating into our bottom line, introducing new services that
leverage our strengths to create new opportunities.
Our Livorno-Palermo service is a good example of expansion in action. Our move into
Brindisi is another: it is perfectly located for us to access the southern Italian market
for destinations in the Eastern Med, and will become an essential link in the landbridge
between Lisbon and Istanbul.
Meanwhile, we continue to replace old ships with new across the Group. We are redesigning our propellers for greater efficiency at slower speeds. We have set up a unit of
three engineers dedicated to finding new ways to raise fuel efficiency. And we are committed to cutting our fuel consumption by 100,000 tonnes this year alone.
How a company responds in tough times is the true measure of its worth. On this score
I believe that our Group is performing admirably. Our ability to cut costs, improve efficiency and generate solid financial results year after year is also a boon to our customers, providing a potent guarantee of stability and service quality in difficult times.
The challenges facing us today leave no margin for error. They demand rigour and professionalism, sound judgment and the courage to put judgment into practice when the
storm is at its height. We will continue along the path we have set ourselves, confident
in our ability to do just that.

New
services
ACL and Finnlines launch a
North America, Finland and
T
he American- headquartered shipping company Atlantic Container Line and the Finnish company Finnlines, companies
part of the Grimaldi Group, recently announced the start of
a new, weekly ro/ro service from the United States and Canada to
Russia and Finland.
The service, launched last February, is the fastest and most frequent service available in the market for these routes: dedicated
to rolling freight and containers, it regurarly calls New York on
Tuesdays, Baltimore on Thursdays, Norfolk on Fridays and Halifax
on Mondays; then the ACL vessels arrive each Thursday at Antwerp (PSA Terminal, Quay 869), where the freight is transhipped
on the Finnlines vessels to sail at the end of the week directly to
Helsinki, St. Petersburg and Kotka. Transit times to St. Petersburg
are 22 days from New York, 20 days from Baltimore, 19 days from
Norfolk and 16 days from Halifax.
To serve this new line are ACL’s transatlantic and Finnlines’ iceclass Baltic vessels: the ACL units, 292 metres long and with a gross
tonnage of 57,000 tonnes, can carry up to 3,264 linear metres of
vehicles, trailers, oversized equipment and project cargo under
deck; they have an angled two lane stern ramp of 450-ton capacity, while their internal ramp systems segregate cars from other
vehicles, trailers and breakbulk cargo.
Finnlines vessels are the new ro/ro sister units “Finnbreeze”,
“Finnsea”, “Finnsky” and “Finnsun”, recently deployed on service and able to carry about 3,326 linear metres of rolling cargo
and 600 cars.
With ACL and Finnlines being sister companies, they have complete control of the cargo until the arrival to any Baltic destination;
freight will move under a single ACL bill of lading from the United
States and Canada to St. Petersburg, Kotka and Helsinki.
ACL and Finnlines are both leading shipping operators respectively in North America and in the Baltic Sea. The ACL staff in North
America has about 20 years of experience in handling oversized
equipment and project cargo, operating weekly, fixed-day services linking the Northern American ports of Halifax (Nova Scotia),
New York, Baltimore and Norfolk, Virginia to the European ports
of Liverpool, Antwerp, Hamburg and Gothenburg; Finnlines has
extensive experience since 1947, operating ro/ro and ro/pax routes
covering all main ports in Finland, Germany, Sweden, Poland,
Denmark, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom
and Russia.

n the 30 th of January and on the 7th of February the two
sister ro/ro vessels “Finnsky” and “Finnsun” were
respectively delivered by the Jinling shipyard of China to
Finnlines.
The namegiving ceremony of the m/v Finnsky took place at
Antwerp Euroterminal (AET) on the 20 th of April: godmother
of the vessel Mrs. Saara Wahlroos, the wife of Nordea, Sampo
and UPM chairman Mr. Björn Wahlroos. Attending the event
were Mr. Emanuele Grimaldi (Chairman of Finnlines Plc),
Mr. Uwe Bakosch (CEO of Finnlines Plc), Mr. Marc Van Peel
(Chairman of the Antwerp Port Authority), Mr. Eddy Bruyninckx (CEO of the Antwerp Port Authority), members of
Finnlines’ board of directors and a selection of the company’s
most important customers.
The name “Finnsky”, just as the names of her sister vessels, refers to the ecological qualities of these newbuildings.
Finnlines is strongly committed to reducing environmental
impacts for the benefit of our children and future generations. The ships are designed specifically for fuel efficiency
and operational flexibility. Emission of carbon dioxides are
strongly reduced by using modern technology.
The ships are built to the ice-class 1A, allowing them to sail
reliably in the Baltic Sea year round. They have an impressive ro-ro capacity of 3,326 lane metres, providing space
for more than 200 trailers. The lo-lo capacity for containers
is about 398 TEU and the hoistable car decks on two levels
have a surface of 5,571 m², enough for about 600 cars. This
makes the vessels most suitable for shipping a large variety
of containers, ro-ro and breakbulk cargoes.
The new vessels, fully owned by Finnlines, will replace expensive chartered tonnage and so give the company not just
a significant jump in quality but a financial boost as well.
Shortly after their delivery, the “Finnsky” and “Finnsun”
were deployed on Finnlines’ service linking Bilbao, and Antwerp with Helsinki, Kotka and St. Petersburg northbound and,
in addition, Zeebrugge southbound.

Mediterranean
network
Grimaldi’s MoS network to
be extended to the Balkans
The Montenegrin port of Bar due to be served as from July 2012
I
n the framework of its policy of expansion in the Balkan area, as from
the month of July, the Grimaldi Group
will launch a new motorway of the sea
connecting Montenegro’s port of Bar with
Northern and Southern Italy as well as
Greece.
Last February, the Group signed an
agreement with Montenegro’s Transport
Minister Andrija Lompar at the presence
of the country’s Prime Minister Igor Luksic to add the port of Bar in the Group’s
Mediterranean network of maritime
services.
The new regular maritime service will
link the ports of Bar with Genoa, Livorno,
Catania, Corinth and Patras on the northbound route, while the ports of Catania,
Salerno and Genoa will be served on the
southbound route, offering a new, wider
and more complete network of Western
Mediterranean destinations linked with
the Balkans.
The new regular line, dedicated to the
transport of trucks, trailers, cars and other rolling freight, will be served by a Eurocargo-class vessel, designed and built
by the Korean Hyundai Mipo shipyards
and recently delivered to the Group. The

Eurocargo-class vessels have a length
of 200 metres, a gross tonnage of 32,700
tonnes and are able to transport each
about 4,000 linear metres of rolling cargo, equal to 280 trailers, and 200 cars, at
a service speed of 23 knots. Their wide
six decks, two of which hoistable dedicated to the transport of cars, were conceived to minimize any potential damage
to the freight transported. Furthermore,
thanks to their ramp able to load units
with a weight up to 120 tonnes, these vessels are suitable also for the transport of

project cargo.
With the launch of this new motorway of
the sea, the Grimaldi Group will offer a
new regular link not only in support of
the export flows from the Balkan area,
where many Italian corporations have
made important investments in recent
years, but also to the Western Mediterranean, where beneficiaries will also be
the logistics companies located in the
Milan-Turin-Genoa industrial triangle,
as well as shippers from Southern Italy,
including Sicily.

Minoan Lines receives
the “Award of Excellence”
D
uring the premier award ceremony
held at the Athens Hilton Hotel on
the 2nd of April, Minoan Lines was awarded the prestigious “Corporate Superbrand” recognition of excellence. The
Greek Company has been proclaimed
as the ferry/shipping company with the
best corporate brand in the Greek passenger shipping sector for 2011/2012 by
the esteemed international institution
“Corporate Superbrands Greece”.
This distinction is of great significance
and represents a great honor for Minoan
Lines given the respected reputation and
high profile of the said institution, which
takes place every two years in Greece; it
is considered an exceptional recognition
given the high competition in the respective sector.
Minoan Lines has been chosen among
2,000 candidate leading brands in
Greece and garnered one of the highest scores amongst the final assortment
of ten exceptional brands from various
industries, being the only company to be
granted the “First Place of Excellence” in
the Greek shipping sector this year.
The award was received by the company’s Managing Director, Mr. Antonis
10 GNE WS
Maniadakis, who stated: “It is truly a great
honor, another great achievement for our
company. We are particularly grateful
and indebted to valued and loyal passengers, our dedicated cargo associates
and our experienced personnel on land
and at sea.” he concluded. The premier
branding celebration was attended by
members of the Board of Directors
and top executives of Minoan Lines.
Finnlines, a Grimaldi Group company,
also received the Superbrand recognition back in 2005 as one of the top brands
in Finland.
Events
The Grimaldi Group certified as
Authorised Economic Operator
T
he Grimaldi Group has become
the first shipping company in Italy
to be awarded the full Authorised
Economic Operator (AEO-F) status. The
prestigious award was granted by the
Italian Customs Authorities in Naples in
the areas of Customs Simplifications and
Security and Safety, following a special
audit made at the Group’s Head Office.
The award results from six months of
preparation of the Group’s Safety, Quality
and Security Department and certifies
that the Grimaldi Group fulfills comprehensive security and safety guidelines
laid down by the EU with regard to reliability, solvency, compliance with relevant legal provisions and fulfillment of
specific security and safety standards.
Being certified means, among others,
lower risk that the flow of goods into
and out the EU will be stopped for examination, reduced number of data to be
provided for the summary declarations
and easier access to authorizations and
permits.
The status of the Authorised Economic
Operator applies to all economic operators and their business partners playing a
role in the international supply chain, i.e.
producers, exporters, forwarders, warehouse keepers, customs agents, carriers,
importers who are involved in activities
covered by the relevant customs legislation and are eligible in terms of reliability
and security in the supply chain.
The AEO certification reinforces Grimal-
di’s ongoing commitment to quality and
reliability in its maritime and logistics
services as well as preventive security
and safety measures. AEO accreditation is a further sign of the quality of the
Grimaldi Group’s processes in creating
a secure supply chain based on maritime
transport.

organised by the representatives of the
Salón Internacional de la Logística-SIL
(the leading International Logistics Exhibition in Spain and Southern Europe) had
as speakers Enrique Lacalle and Blanca
Sorigué, respectively the President and
General Director of SIL, as well as Guido
Grimaldi, Commercial Manager of the
Grimaldi Group Mediterranean short
sea lines.
The conference was attended by Spanish and foreign journalists together with
representatives of the Barcelona Port
Authority, the major Spanish logistics
operators, trucking companies and the
main Grimaldi customers of the Barcelona area. It was dedicated to the news of
the next edition of the exhibition, which
will be held from the 5th to the 7th of June.
It also focused on the importance of the
Mediterranean network and the proposals for the future development not only
of trade between Europe and Northern
Africa, but also for a better access from
South America and Africa to the European market.

due to open in 2016 and significantly improving maritime access to the port.
Then Marc Ivens, Managing Director of
AET and CEO of Mexico Natie (the partner of Grimaldi in AET), outlined the
great expansion of the terminal during
the last 10 years, resulting in a steady
growth of capacity and handling facilities for a wide variety of cargo.
The Alderman of the Port of Antwerp,
Marc Van Peel concluded that Grimaldi’s
continuous investments and commitment
to the Port of Antwerp are a most valued
contribution to future sustainable growth.
In a virtually created shipping scenery,
the festive atmosphere came in full swing
and it looked like all guests enjoyed the
networking and the exclusive event.
AET was set up in 2001, through a joint
venture between the Grimaldi Group
and the Belgian stevedoring company
Mexico Natie, with the aim of creating
a hub port in Northern Europe for the
Grimaldi Group for the handling of rolling freight, containers and unitised general cargo. Today, the terminal is being
extended up to 1.25 million square metres: it features a 1.6 km long dedicated
berth, a rail connection, warehouses, a
PDI facility as well as state-of-the-art handling equipment. AET is one of the first
European terminals to have its container
gate fitted with passive radiation equipment to measure the containers’ radioactivity. In 2011, throughput both in exports
and imports was of over 655,000 vehicles
and more than 100,000 containers.
Today, the terminal is being regularly
called by Grimaldi’s liner services to
West Africa, South America, the Mediterranean (the Euro-Med and Euro-Aegean
services), as well as Finnlines’ services
to the North and Baltic Seas (including
Russia) as well as Spain.
