Verigram - San Sisto College
Verigram EDITION 21 APRIL 2016 11 From the Leadership Team Dear Parents, Students, Staff, Past Students, Past Staff and Community, This week’s Habit of Mind is “Gathering data through all senses”. Leonardo da Vinci said that, “All our knowledge has its origins in our perceptions.” We could take this to mean that we gain knowledge by using all our senses: to know a flavour it must be tasted; to know a role it must be acted; to know a game it must be played; and to know a dance it must be moved. This semester I have been studying a module in the CPA Program called Strategic Management Accounting. While there are many pages to read and lectures to listen to online, I am also lucky enough to be exposed to similar concepts through my role here at San Sisto, for example, one of the first chapters is about the role of the Verigram I 1 Strategic Management Accountant. While the words in the textbook are providing me with information, what gives me understanding is the fact that I have done these things first hand. I know what it means when they talk about “reporting information that is both clear and sufficiently detailed for various stakeholders”. I have stood in front of the College Finance Committee and Board, I have presented information to both staff and students at different times and on different topics taking into consideration the needs of the audience which I am facing. I know what doing this feels like and looks like and this therefore helps me to be able to have more knowledge and understanding of what the words in the text are trying to say. but about understanding the concepts San Sisto offers many opportunities for our students to develop their information gathering skills. Learning is not about memorising what is in your text book Mrs Susan Boban, behind the words. Subjects within the Science, Home Economics, Performing Arts and Sport areas are obvious examples of where data is gathered from all senses. Be creative with your other subject and extra-curricular areas and think about what you can do to try and gather data using all senses. This week our seniors will be attending their Senior Formal. This is a wonderful evening for our girls where they can celebrate their final year at San Sisto College as a group. I wish the girls a fun and safe celebration. Gather data from all senses… see the sparkle, taste the food, listen and move to the music! The Cristo Rei (Christ the King) Statue was next on the agenda – our jaws dropped at the sight of the hill however as Mark, our Catholic Mission facilitator, assured us, the view was absolutely worth it. Eddie and Anna gave us a little debrief on the history of the statue as we gawked at the breathtaking 360 degree view of the valleys and mountains that Timor Immersion Last week some of our Timor travellers wrote about our first days at the Bakhita Centre in Eraulo. This week, India Lovelock-Kalaitzides, Bree Galbraith and Luisa Randall write about our last days at the Bakhita Centre, during which we travelled each day to Letefoho, high in the mountains. While there, we had a variety of experiences, among them meeting a young French couple who were giving two years of their lives to teaching in the Catholic high school there. He was an IT specialist teaching IT to students, she an occupational therapist teaching English (with a French accent). Their care for their surrounded us. remained unphased. It was a shock to see the difference in road and basic living conditions. We were astonished to know that almost all of the children we saw walking to school, walked for up to 2 hours in the mud. The roads up the mountain were far from what we were used to – mostly dirt, which turned to mud on rainy days, and narrow in places. As soon as parent confirms these changes, they will receive a message advising them that the form will be locked until the school has made the requested changes. Once the college has updated the details, the form will be unlocked, allowing the parent to further update or confirm their personal information. MY STUDENTS – If a parent has children across multiple BCE schools, they only need one password to log into each of the Parent Portals. We were told that on Fridays the Orange Sky volunteers come to wash clothes in their mobile vans. they will see a link to those schools However, Rosies is not an organisation that just provides drinks and food. Their motto states they are also, ‘Your friends on the street’, providing someone who will chat and listen. I talked with different people and it was amazing just how quickly people opened up to a friendly figure. To hear stories about detention centres, family problems and other things was confronting, but an amazing experience. having trouble logging on to the Parent Helping with Rosies is one of the best experiences that I have had at San are trying to use may be different to the one recorded in our system. It was an eye opening experience that made me realise just how many people are less fortunate than I am. When we first arrived at the church where the Logan Rosies is based, certain duties had to be done to prepare for the night, such as slicing the bread and packing the van. The Rosies van provides tea, coffee, milo and cordial to drink, and soups and breads to eat. When we arrived at the area where we would set up, it was shocking to see just how many people there actually were both adults and children - who relied on Rosies. We usually associate Rosies with helping the homeless yet there Sisto. were also many families and people Eleanor Walton-Smith, there who simply couldn’t afford to feed Media and Communications Captain under the My School tab. Highlights include the Entrepreneurship Showcase – where we worked in small groups to propose a creative solution to a reallife business issue – and the Innovation Workshop where the group modelled an epidemic spreading over Brisbane and was split into different government departments to respond appropriately and save the city! The program has been extremely beneficial and enjoyable; I have gained lots of new skills and experiences, as well as met people from other schools with shared interests.
