In July, we welcomed new board members Edward Dobbs, Milton Lovell, and Bianca Sweeten and said farewell to Jordan Barré, Ollie Rencher, Snow Morgan, Peggy Brewer, and Price Ford. We are also so pleased to welcome Rev. Steve Montgomery as board chair and thank Jef Feibelman for his faithful service in that position since 2010. Please note the rest of the board and its executive committee listed on the left side of this page. The past few months have been exciting as we’ve taken an opportunity to look forward. Our leadership, board of directors, and staff have worked hard to produce a three-year strategic plan, and the process has been a tremendous success. We look forward to revealing our next steps in the coming months, but I can say at this point that the future looks very bright for MIFA! None of this progress would be possible without the many contributions of our donors and volunteers. Many thanks to each of you for your continued support in this year and the next. Sincerely, Sally Jones Heinz MIFA Executive Director Executive Director Sally Jones Heinz Hope in Action staff Ellen Whitten, Editor [email protected] (901) 529-4507 Our vision: Uniting the community through service. In anticipation of substantial growth in our area’s senior population—an increase of 30,000 in the fourcounty area between 2010 and 2013, and an anticipated 18% increase before 2015 in Shelby County alone—MIFA Meals on Wheels staff is working to evaluate current systems and maximize efficiency. Our program served 447,976 meals to 3,313 unduplicated seniors in their homes and at congregate sites in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 HOPE IN ACTION • Fall 2012 • 3 A Taste of Hunger by Linda Marks Throughout our history, crises in our city have made Memphis stronger. The legacy of the nuns and clergy who sacrificed to care for yellow fever victims in the 1870’s continues to inspire us. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in 1968 forced Memphis to face its racist past and take steps to heal it. In 2010 a subtler, but nonetheless devastating peril was identified: Memphis was named the hunger capital of the United States. On November 4, a group of faith-based and social service groups will inaugurate a major campaign, A Taste of Hunger. The kick-off event will be a banquet, hosted by Joe Birch, featuring speakers, experiential learning about hunger, and opportunities to take action. The banquet will be a springboard to a carefully coordinated and high-impact effort to address hunger issues in Memphis through broad-based education, empowerment, and support. Current partners in this effort are MIFA, Mid-South Food Bank, and the Memphis Jewish Federation, as well as Balmoral Presbyterian Church, the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, and Rhodes College. Carla Meisterman, Pastor of Balmoral Presbyterian Church is a leader of the Taste of Hunger task force. She recalls her experience as director of Memphis in May, which was begun in an effort to bring Even teens and young adults are subject to hunger and homelessness. Jerrod relies on food from a church soup kitchen to sustain him until he can find work. This is an emerging effort for broad based education and communication with the goal of empowering the development of dependable support to feed the hungry in our midst.” A comprehensive resource guide on hunger, featuring stats, stories, and solutions, will be available to all who are interested. It will contain contact information on food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, backpack programs for children, Kids Café programs, and community gardens. In addition, it will include resources for awareness, advocacy, and involvement. If you are interested in supporting the mission of changing the face of hunger in Memphis, please contact Linda Marks at [email protected] or (901) 527-0208 x218. Regular expenses — including food costs — are an ongoing challenge, even for working families like Alex’s. Through the generosity of more than 350 individuals, we were able to raise over $1.2 million to support MIFA’s services. Our thanks to those who make leadership gifts of $1,000 or more year after year, and to the many new donors who joined MIFA’s Circle of Hope this year. Established in 2001, the purpose of Comcast Cares Day is to work with nonprofits on programs that improve quality of life where Comcast customers live and work. This year’s project involved donating items for MIFA clients. Comcast employees purchased essential items and treats for seniors and assembled 250 shoe boxes and gift bags for MIFA to deliver as care packages to clients. Employees and their children, along with community partner volunteers from Latino Memphis, the Memphis Urban League, and NAACP, also created colorful Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and birthday cards to include in the care packages. The Comcast Foundation awards a grant to community partners each year for participating in Comcast Cares Day. Otha Brandon, Director of Government Affairs for Comcast and a MIFA board member and supporter, commented, “Comcast is proud to be associated with MIFA. They are a very valuable institution in our community that provides important and critical services to our citizens.” MIFA has been a grateful recipient of employee contributions on Comcast Cares Day several times since 2006. Comcast is a long-time supporter of MIFA and its programs, providing financial contributions and increased public awareness in addition to strong volunteer support. If your company would like to participate in a volunteer project at MIFA, contact Charlie Nelson at (901) 529-4514 or [email protected]. Children like Anna helped create Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and birthday cards for MIFA’s senior clients during Comcast Cares Day activities. mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 HOPE IN ACTION • Fall 2012 • 9 One Light, Many Colors MIFA is presenting its second annual One Light, Many Colors series of free weekly lectures on world religions. Featured lecturers have included Alec Wellford, Third Church of Christ, Scientist; Dr. Ron McDonald, Memphis Friends Meeting (Quaker); and Rev. Shane Stanford, Christ United Methodist Church. Join us on Thursday, September 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Town Village Audubon Park retirement community (950 Cherry Road) to hear Bob McBride of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon). The series title is inspired by the image of a stained glass panel, which projects a myriad of colors from a common source of light. The program, open to the public, was organized by Linda Marks, MIFA’s InterFaith Relations Officer, and Shawna Welch, Director of Livewell at Town Village. It is designed to promote dialogue and understanding among people of all faiths. Videos of the 2011 and 2012 sessions are available on the Faith in Memphis site, http://faithinmemphis.com/category/mifa-one-light/. “From its earliest beginnings, MIFA has represented and welcomed people of all faiths, said Sally Jones Heinz, MIFA executive director. “MIFA’s vitality is the synergy of people coming together not just to solve problems, but to promote and experience the richness and dignity of human lives.” For more information, contact MIFA Inter-Faith Relations Officer Linda Marks at [email protected] or (901) 527-0208 x218. 10 • Fall 2012 • HOPE IN ACTION mifa.org • (901) 527-0208 FY2012 Annual Listing, Circle of Hope Level Anonymous Mr. & Mrs. Taylor Abernathy Mr. & Mrs. Dunbar Abston, Jr. Mr. & Mrs. Ben C.
