Editor’s Note
Dear Sonerians,
The year of 2015 has almost come to a close, with the announcement of our
third quarter profit results of Rs.2,622.22 million before tax and profit after tax of
Rs.1,589.87 million for the nine months period ended 30 September 2015. As we
have reached our last Soneri Roshni edition for the year, I am proud to reckon 2015
as another successful year for Soneri Bank. Our non-clichéd and unconventional
approach grows stronger and continues to propel the bank’s brand image across all
marketing spectrums. Our employees grow in their dedication and commitment which is
evident in the internal productivity campaigns.
Our business is on a continuing growth curve with a significant progress in the Car Finance portfolio. Soneri Car Finance
has shown a 51% growth from December 2014 till August 2015 taking into account the tremendous 2nd Quarter
performance that peaked at Rs.364.45 million in sales. The impact of our recent supportive Campaign launch of Car
finance in September is yet to reap results as it’s the first time we are creating our market awareness in consumer finance.
Marketing campaigns continue to be effective and on strategy raising Soneri Bank’s brand image which has resulted in
invaluable customer engagement and top-of-the-mind brand recall. Soneri Mehnat Wasool launched Remittance 360 ATL
campaigns consistently in the year capitalizing on Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. Soneri Mehnat Wasool maintained
a healthy business performance increase in monthly transactions with an incremental 30% growth from 2014 till today. The
launch of Soneri Asaan Account reinforced our brand positioning of Roshan Har Qadam & clutter-breaking communication
targeting our untapped market.
This edition also covers the festivities of Independence Day that was carried out across the Soneri network whole heartedly.
Soneri Bank congratulates and appreciates all the Sonerians who competed and celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm –
reiterating the bank’s spirit and commitment to the nation’s unity and prosperity.
Our digital pathway is consistently capturing the youth audience on all social media platforms to build our brand equity as a
future banking customer. We are proud to announce that we trended on 2nd rank for hashtag# sonehrapakistan and have
now strategized to sustain our presence on ground activities for further engagement. As per our department’s strategy we
have carved a separate unit to sustain our digital presence and have also introduced Corporate Communications, keeping
the staff informed of all our ongoing activities from campaigns to public relation activities.
Our aim is the pursuit of excellence, setting new benchmarks and staying true to our distinguished approach towards
business communication.
Roshan Har Qadam

Technological advancements continue to take place; collaborations with several top-of-the-line technological organizations
have taken place this year to plummet the bank’s technological capacities. Organizations such as Inov8 and C-Square
Consulting have been brought on board to upgrade mobile banking and centralized service systems. Soneri Bank has also
partnered with PTCL for embarking upon hosting the IT Data Centre Infrastructure for enhanced security and sustainability.
Our management division has also carried out proactive measures pertaining to risk - curtailing setbacks at the face of
contingencies that effect data, infrastructure and technology areas.

Note
Dear Readers,
Soneri Roshni November 2015
04
2015 has been a year of product marketing, Soneri Mehnat
Wasool, Soneri Car Finance and Soneri Asaan Account have
all been rewardingly launched across the country,
contributing to a stronger brand equity and top-of-the-mind
brand recall. In this edition I have received good response
from the overall bank staff in contributing articles for the
newsletter. I would like to thank the IT Department, Risk
Management Division, Car Finance, Remittances and the
HR department for their contribution. Furthermore, the
response we have witnessed on the Independence Day was
heartening. Everyone celebrated with great enthusiasm,
specifically the staff efforts in making Pakistan’s flags and
decorating their departments have depicted the patriotism
we share as one nation. We also launched a contest on 14th
August on social platforms named #SonehraPakistan which
generated a high frequency of fan engagement.
We Sonerians are the brand custodians of SBL and only our
combined efforts can leverage the brand for the benefit of
our customers and ourselves. I would like to thank
everyone’s contribution and anticipate a better response in
the next edition, the very first edition for the year 2016.

Soneri Roshni November Edition 2015
This edition’s theme is based on the evolution of our banking industry,
which is the result of our progression in overall banking systems through
constant innovations within product and service portfolios.
We exhibit this progression with linear art as our design tool.
A dynamic layout exudes a sense of transcendence with
banking related icons and directional arrows that
represent growth and future aspirations.
The key drivers of higher net earnings were primarily
revenue growth and managed expenses. Bank’s revenue
increased by 22.86 percent to Rs.8.06 billion, from last
year’s figure of Rs.6.56 billion whereas expenses increased
just by 6.48 percent. Bank’s net assets amounted to
Rs.18.07 billion as at 30 September 2015, being 6.04
percent higher than December 2014 base of Rs.17.04
billion. Deposits grew by 7.88 percent during the nine
months closing at Rs.176.11 billion (December 2014:
Rs.163.25 billion) and net advances down by 5.27 percent
to Rs.100.49 billion (December 2014: Rs.106.08 billion) due
to seasonal factors. The Bank continues to follow a prudent
policy for making provisions for the infected loan portfolio in
line with regulatory requirements.
Soneri Bank has a unique market position in trade-finance
and transactions banking services and boasts a loyal and
satisfied client-base in all its 249 branches all over the
country. The Bank is committed to meet the increasing
expectations of its customers and continue to provide them
par-excellence services, for which the Bank has been
investing prudently in information technology, human
resources, marketing and infrastructure.

Promises
Soneri Mehnat Wasool
in the year 2015
Spreading the Joy in
Eid-ul-Fitr
Soneri Bank has been making a positive and significant
contribution to the Home Remittance business segment
since its initiation in 2012. It has signed with several
international remitting organizations such as MoneyGram,
Wallstreet Finance (Canada), Golden Money Transfer
(USA), Al Falah Exchange (UAE), Alpine Exchange (USA)
and its recent major breakthrough with Al Ansari Exchange
(UAE) and Ria Money Transfer (UK) – one of the world’s top
remitting company. The brand name, “Soneri Mehnat
Wasool Remittance” has been promoted through
campaigns that standout in terms of unique content and
communication strategy, solidifying a prominent footprint
for Soneri Bank in the remittance segment.
The Mehnat Wasool Eid-ul-Fitr campaign beautifully
captured the spirit of the transition from Ramadan to Eid
throughout which families prepare for the festivities of Eid.
The communication tied moments and sentiments that are
relevant to families whose loved ones (breadwinners)
remain far away at work during such festivities. Soneri
Mehnat Wasool exceptionally bridges this gap in its
communication. The Eid-ul-Fitr campaign covered a 360
degree spectrum with a TVC, radio spots, OOH, digital and
print advertisements.
This year, Soneri Mehnat Wasool continues to make waves
with campaigns for both Eid occasions (Eid-ul-Fitr and
Eid-ul-Adha). Both campaigns intelligently highlight the
target audience by emotionally tying them to the product
offering with real-life scenarios – a result from thorough
insight probing and commitment towards novelty.

Preserving the Spirit of
Eid-ul-Adha
The Eid-ul-Adha campaign was another heartwarming
communication that portrayed the essence of the occasion
by celebrating the joy and satisfaction of fulfilling the
religious obligation of Eid-ul-Adha – something that
becomes unmanageable for families whose sole
breadwinners work abroad.
The communication smartly highlights the product’s USP of
instant money transfer as a rewarding solution. The media
plan for the Mehnat Wasool’s Eid-ul-Adha campaign
strategically covered large scale print and prime-time radio
mediums.

September 2015.
The campaign reached audiences through two variations of
print and radio spots. Although, the communication
focuses on the conventional benefits such as convenience
and affordability, the Soneri Car Finance campaign
creatively wraps real-life scenarios with emotional
benefits – reflecting convenience, swiftness and
affordability.
Soneri Car Finance also offers customers to choose;

Soneri Car Finance
The increase in fuel prices has undeterred the need for
personal and private transportation. Car purchasing
continues to grow in major cities across Pakistan. However
with time, consumers have become more aware of the
convenience that comes with opting for car finance. This is
evident from the fact that over the past quarter, Soneri Bank
has made significant progress with its Car Finance portfolio
and has seen a tremendous growth in a short time, more
than 51% from December 2014 till August 2015.
Soneri Car Finance Sales for the 2nd Quarter of 2015
stood at Rs. 364.45 million and sales for June 2015
(Rs. 134.20 million) was the highest-ever sales recorded
in a single month.

Contingency – Soneri Bank’s
Business Continuity Plan (BCP)
You are sitting in your office, everything’s in order, you are
confident, but, all of a sudden - you face a contingency. No
one can predict the future, contingencies never inform
before showing up. However, you can coup with a sound
business continuity plan.
A ‘business continuity plan’ is about identifying the functions
of your bank that you cannot afford to lose; such as
customer data, infrastructure, technology, staff, etc. – and
planning on how to maintain them, if an incident occurs.
Recent Activities
Finance Division
RMD Ops Team conducted a BCP contingency testing at
Central Office – Finance Division in the presence of
audit/security representatives. This activity was designed in a
way to test the Finance Division staff members for earthquake
and bomb threat contingency so they can get the most out of
it. Finance Division critical staff members relocated to its BCP
back site at the Allama Iqbal Road Branch – Karachi and
performed their routine functions successfully.

Any contingency, major or minor, whether it is natural,
intentional or unintentional, can cause major disruption to
your bank. But if we make a contingency strategy now,
rather than waiting for it to happen, we will be capable to
get back to routine operations in the plausible time. Delays
can cost us our valuable business to our competitors or
even worse, losing the confidence of our customers.
“Banks need to be prepared for a wide variety of
events that could impact its operations and
profit generation.”
Today, banks exist in a highly competitive market segment.
They continuously revolutionize to achieve business
objectives through strategies for providing essential and
unique services to their customers. Getting a plan in place
shows your employees, shareholders and customers that
you are a proactive organization; it improves overall
efficiency and helps you allocate the right financial and
human resources to keep your bank up and running during
a serious disruption.
Risk Management Division
The Operational Risk Team devised and implemented a
bank-wide business continuity plan. It is the act of
proactively working out a way to prevent, if possible, and
manage consequences of a disaster, limiting it to the extent
by which a business can afford.

A BCP mock drill ensures that policies and its framework
are validated by all SBL staff members. A business
contingency plan cannot be considered reliable until it is
exercised and proved practical. The mock drill involves:
validating plans; rehearsing staff members; and testing
systems which are relied upon to deliver resilience.

Service Quality Department
The high cost of the service quality department downtime
plus the loss of valuable information and equipment means
that our bank does not survive a major/minor contingency.
RMD Ops Risk Business Continuity Planning can help
reduce those losses and may be what keeps our bank in
existence. RMD Ops Team achieved another milestone to
resume most critical and complex function with the help of
the BCP contingency test at Al Rahim Tower – Service
Quality Department.
The service quality department’s critical staff relocated to
its BCP site at SMCH Branch – Karachi and attended
inbound customer calls and resolved their queries.

Business continuity and disaster recovery planning are not
new concepts in the business world, but the act of
consciously assessing and planning for potential problems
certainly has been underscored in disastrous events in the
past decade including fire, earthquakes, tsunamis,
hurricanes, typhoons, and terrorist attacks. Banks need to
plan for potential disasters that will impact their ability to
continue operations, revenue and profit generation. Without
a plan to recover, no matter how large or small, any bank
can fail miserably.

A good credit operations and documentation support shop
is a mandatory requirement in all banks to ensure
maintenance of the credit discipline as per the guidelines
and policies. The State Bank of Pakistan issued their
guidelines on risk management vide BSD-7 dated August
15, 2003 that required the banks to formulate and
implement a well-defined credit policy and to develop
systems, procedures and related organizational structure to
measure, monitor and control credit risk. The loan
origination function has been given key importance which
should be subsequently strengthened by credit
administration function. Such function should ensure that
the credit activities are in compliance with the bank’s
policies and procedures. It is basically a back office
function, responsible for providing support in controlling the
extension and maintenance of the credit.
In light of the above guidelines, the bank’s Credit Policy
was revised and approved by the Board of Directors in its
meeting held on 31st August, 2012. Subsequent to the
policy, a revised credit manual was circulated as well in
order to improve the credit processes and compliance of
the defined procedures is mandatory for all bank staff
associated with credit processes.
As required in the Credit Policy, a Credit Administration
Department was established as part of Credit Division and
centralization of the credit processing was implemented in
2013 under the guidance of Mr. Akbar Raza, Head of CAD.
A Service Level Agreement was signed between Credit
Division and Business Groups for ensuring smooth
functioning of CAD and providing quality services to our
customers.
Since 2013, CAD has been made fully functional in a
phased manner and is controlling the credit processes
CAD is independent of the business groups. The branches
regularly interact with customers for strengthened
client-business relationships. This has helped in improving
the overall credit performance of the bank. The business
groups are likely to generate more of the credit business in
accordance with the guidance of Credit Division. The
positive difference is pretty obvious if we compare the
position with previous years. Business Groups are now
primarily indulged in enhancing the credit portfolio of the
bank. Subsequently, CAD caters the requirements of all
credit functions from extending the credit to adjustment of
the same. CAD ensures that all the credit covenants are
complied with by the branches in order to avoid any issues
in the performing loans. Due to country-wide centralization
of credit processes, CAD is able to implement uniform
credit practices in all regions and it has helped in ensuring
effective loan monitoring at all ends. This has created a
great working relationship environment with the business
groups and CAD is able to effectively render its services,
subsequently reducing the turn-around time while ensuring
that the policies and procedures as advised by the
regulatory and senior management of the bank are being
complied with.
CAD is responsible for maintaining country-wide credit
disbursement control and it issues Disbursement

Risk Minds Asia is the world’s leading risk management
event that yearly offers risk managers a promising
opportunity for connecting with and learning from the best
risk professionals across the globe. It comes with great
delight, that Mr. Javed H. Siddiqi, Head of Risk
Management Division was invited once again by the
prestigious Risk Minds Asia conference as an authoritative
speaker, held in Hong Kong from 12 to 15 October, 2014.
through our CAD Centre in the South Region managed by
Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Khan, in Central-I Region by
Mr. Nadeem Haider Naqvi, in Central-II Region by
Mr. Muhammad Aamir Shakir and in North Region by
Mr. Muhammad Rafiq. A team of highly experienced and
talented personnel has been positioned at these centres.
The team is looking after all credit processes, including:
support in credit and collateral documentation, credit
operations and monitoring, assistance in other daily credit
processes involving operational and legal aspects.
Credit documentation institutes the relationship between
the bank and the borrower. The facility, collateral and legal
documentation are essential to be obtained by the
customers. Business Units submit the same to CAD for
ensuring the completeness as per the approved terms and
conditions. Presently, tracking for the required documents
is quite easy as the CAD circulates the exception reports to
the business groups for their necessary actions. CAD
subsequently performs the function of safe custodian of
securities, facility and security documentation. The control
of shares pledged with our bank against borrowing
relationships lies with CAD as well through CDC and
monitoring of the loan portfolio against pledged shares is
being monitored and circulated to the relevant groups on
daily basis.
After centralization, CAD is responsible for allowing
drawdown in the facilities of the borrowers. These loans are
further monitored by CAD and if any anomaly or
variance/deviation from the approved terms and conditions
is found then the same are communicated to the business
units for executing the remedial measures. Pricing of the
credit portfolio is being administered as well and branches
are asked for rectifications, if required.
Soneri Roshni November 2015

In order to ensure that the business units are able to
perform their respective credit processes timely and
efficiently, CAD supports them by providing information
regarding the required approvals, valuations, insurances,
pledge related issues etc. It depicts a clear picture of the
performing loans to the business units that subsequently
resolve the queries for ensuring smooth credit operations in
the borrowers’ accounts. Consortium finances of SBL are
being monitored and reviewed by CAD in accordance with
the approvals and in effective liaison with CIBG.
CAD is effectively managing the bank’s Export Finance
Scheme and Islamic Export Refinance Scheme limits with
the State Bank of Pakistan. Branches obtain clearance from
CAD for borrowing cases before submission of the same to
the SBP. With the support of business units, this process
has helped CAD to maintain and monitor the overall bank’s
borrowing exposure with SBP.
CAD is responsible for monitoring the relationships with
the credit vendors such as muqaddams on our pledged
sites. CAD provides joint approvals with the business units
in order to maintain allocation of various muqaddams as
per our approved panels. SBL relationships with other
vendors for specified credit services are being catered by
CAD as well.
A major portfolio of our performing loans is against the
pledge of imported and local commodities. Such loans are
being monitored by CAD for ensuring that our bank’s
policies related to pledge-based financing are being
complied with in true letter and spirit. Such portfolio also
needs to be insured at all times and CAD ensures that the
detailed information of anomalies in the insurance of the
financing portfolio as well as in the outstanding loans
against pledged commodities are being monitored and
forwarded to the business units for rectification. In
compliance of the R-5 of SBP Prudential Regulations for
Corporate/Commercial Banking, CAD also corresponds
with the business units for conducting joint inspections of
the pledged stocks.
Apart from all the activities performed by CAD, The CAD
maintains its close liaison with various departments
including Corporate and Investment Banking Group
(CIBG), Commercial and Retail Banking Group (CRBG),
Information Technology Division, Finance Division, Treasury
and FI Group, Centralized Clearing Unit, Centralized Trade
Operations, Centralized Operations and other related
departments to ensure smooth processing of Business As
Usual (BAU).
CAD also provides its assistance to Remedial Management
Department for cases under litigation and recovery.
CAD also provides trainings and credit management
consultancy to the business groups as well.
Enabling The Future:
Soneri Graduate Training Program
Soneri Bank aims to develop its future Operation
Managers in order to supply high quality workforce for its
Operations team. In this regard, the Trainee Officer Batch
#49 was on-boarded earlier this year. Recruitment drives
were initiated across placement centres and interactive
presentation sessions were conducted in renowned HEC
recognized universities of Karachi, Lahore, Hyderabad
& Multan.
After a rigorous process of aptitude tests and panel
interviews, 50 fresh graduates (25 each from South and
Central regions) officially joined the training program.
The batch’s initial classroom training focused on
developing their operational and soft skills, thus
familiarizing them with the work culture. Upon completion, a
passing out ceremony was organized for the participants
and was followed by lunch with the Head of Operations and
his senior team.
Once the candidates completed their theoretical training,
they were assigned to various branches for further
on-the-job training.
CAD is currently processing various system developments
with the help of ITD and vendors. After implementation of
the same, the service quality will definitely improve further
and will be resultant in monitoring the portfolio more
efficiently.
The journey was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants
who agreed that the training program gave them great
exposure, motivated them to perform with a positive
attitude and served as a platform to excel in their future
job roles.
Business Groups and Credit/CAD are necessary legs of
every credit process and the efforts from both ends are
always in place. This close association between the
departments helps to ensure that the bank has a quality
credit portfolio. It certainly helps to enhance the profitability
of the bank and nevertheless, it is all possible due to
extensive support and guidance from the senior
management including Mr. Mubarik Ali, Country Credit
Head and Mr. Akbar Raza, Head of CAD. We look forward
to another successful year by surpassing the milestones.
Soneri Bank wishes the Trainee Officers a successful
career in their respective roles.

Information on the Move: Switching Data Centers
Given the dynamic operational environment in which
today’s data centers operate, wherein applications and
