Noosa Festival Noserider Wrap Up By Di Cuddihy
www.noosamalibuclub.com Newsletter March/April 2011 In this Bumper Issue: • Festival wrap ups from Phil & Di • 25th Anniversary Barefoot Ball • W&R - The fossils are full! • NMC members at the festival. Editor’s Note: What another great Noosa Festival of Surfing (thanks Phil & your team), especially if you got to surf First Point with only five others in the water! Check out all the news, results & pictures! See you in the water - Andrew Noosa Festival Noserider Wrap Up By Di Cuddihy Always a challenging division, even with good surf. Unfortunately the surf gods weren’t shinning on the event this year with the trials being held on the dredging low tide at the groyne. It was a great advantage point for the photgraphers but this was going to sort the men from the boys by seeing who was lucky enough to get a wave that would run all the way through. The club was represented by it’s younger members - Brodie, Ezra, Zac & Mitch - but all missed out on progressing through to the next round. But it is a big achievement to get to round 2, let alone the semis, so well done guys! Zye Norris set a blistering pace in round 2 (coming in with the 3rd highest score) just behind Harrison Roach and Matt Cuddihy. But the gods weren’t kind to Zye in the Semis with the surf depleating and high scoring waves were few and far between. Harrison Roach took out the semi just ahead of Matt followed by Taylor Jensen & Christian Wach. (I think Christian must have been wondering why he didn’t bring his carbon fibre board when it had carried him to 4 titles in the previous years.) That was the placings for the semis and the line up for the final, which was taken out by Harrison, who had been waiting a long time to win the Noserider Final after completing in 4 finals and always just missing out. Matt came second. The Noserider Pro can be very fickle. Matt has surfed in 11 Noseriders and has made the final 7 times and only won two, President’s Report Hi Mal Clubbers Well the 2011 festival is done and dusted. Congratulations to Phil and Sam Smith for putting on another beauty. For those few members who attended the functions we all had a really great time. Highlights for me - other than the surfing, which considering the surf was pretty special - were Tuesday night at Le Monde with Rusty Miller and crew (one of the best festival nights I’ve had in years), Friday and Saturday nights (Dolphins on Friday night were great) The Noosa Malibu Club is partly funded by so you can see it’s not an easy accomplishment. So don’t give up all you groms - it will happen so just keep trying. Right: NMC’s own Matt Cuddihy and Noserider winner Harrison Roach after the final. Below: What a shot! Harrison making the small surf look very good in the final. Gotta love Noosa - even on a bad day it looks good! Photo: Di Cuddihy Pic: Supplied. and of course the 25th Anniversary Ball. It was great to see so many past members and friends along for the night and those who were there can tell you that missed it what a rocking night it was - with everyone up on the dance floor! Thanks to all those who helped make this such a good night, especially the crew who put it together and of course to Susie for all her hard work. The year is drawing closer to an end with only 3 more point score rounds to go. Unfortunately we are missing tally sheets for 2 rounds so please if you can help find them let Griffo know or one of the executive. Don’t forget that the next GM is on By Dave Dunn Monday 11 April so as many of you as possible please come along as we need to discuss a few important issue such as the 2012 festival, possible support for a team to Malibu etc. One last thing, if you haven’t seen it yet you must get hold of a copy of the 25th Anniversary book. Libby and friends have done a great job putting it together and should be a must for any dedicated member to have as a coffee table book and a keep sake of the club. Hope to see you at the GM Dave Dunn President PAGE 1 Newsletter www.noosamalibuclub.com Mar/Apr 2011 Fun times at the Barefoot Ball By Susie Locke Well... what a hoot we all had !! The night started with quiet quaffing of champagne by the bar and morphed into a dance party to truly rock your thongs off!! Late for Woodstock played up a storm, the dance floor was full and there was food aplenty. Accolades have to go to Mark Tume for being able to tie his own baby blue spotted bowtie, to Libby for her ball frocked leap onto the dance floor, it got the party rocking! And to Brad for his crowd splitting calisthenics as part of his dance moves. I have to say heaps of thanks to Jackie and Lucy who welcomed guests at the door and to Rosie for stepping up to the mic and to the tune of matching Josh’s hairstyles to certain years took Georgie, Jackie, Lucy, Tim May and her ‘ring in’ friend through the dance of the seven t-shirts. Thanks to the guys that are always there to help Rob, Sue and Mon for the hours setting up and to Linda for helping ‘the morning after’. To our great delight we arrived to find that Tom had oganized the vollies to wipe the place clean. Much apprieciated! Libby was heard to to comment.... “the next time we do this”...lets hope we still can in 25 years !! This is what surfing is all about families enjoying themselves. With the pressure not only on the youngest member but also on the dad or mum to get those most important points to bring the team home. I saw a few families really hungry to win at all costs, but you know what they say - Karma is a bitch! The NMC was well represented with the Winters, Whites, Whitfields, Walkers (past club treasuer) and the Win’s (just had to keep the W’s happening) - The Cuddihys. All teams (except the Walkers) progressed to the next round with the Winters & Whitfields bowing out in a hard fought battle. Pete & Brett White surfed exceptionally well just to miss out on the finals. At one stage Win & Matt were going head to head with the Pioli’s splitting waves but in the dying moments of the contest they missed out on 1st place but came home a fantastic 3rd from the Cunninghams. To top of the final, Win & Matt shared the last wave in to cap off a great moment. It was the first final Win had ever made and said he had never been so proud to stand along side Matt on the podium. Smiles all around! Top Right: Finalists in the Family Challenge (L-R) the Cunninghams, the Piolis and the Cuddihys. Right: Doing the club proud (L-R) Win & Matt Cuddihy, Brett & Peter White. Win & Matt took out 3rd - well done guys! Photo: Di Cuddihy Photo: Di Cuddihy Teams Club Challenge Noosa Malibu Club entered two teams in the club team challange this year. This tag team event is a great addition to the festival program with clubs from USA, New Caledonia, Taiwan, Qld & NSW. Each team has 40 minutes for 4 compeititors and 2 scoring waves each. The team A was: Lindon Whitfield, Gordon Fuz, Keena Wilson and Matt Cuddihy while Team B was made up of Brodie Williams, Mark Tume, Andrew Engel and Rosie Locke. Team B was knoecked out in the first round but Team A made the final where they went down valiantly to a strong team from Alex Heads. Malibu Surfing Assoc. from California came 3rd with Manly Beach taking out 4th. Special mention to Lindon & Gordon who surfed beyond themselves and set a great platform for Keena and Matt. 2. 1. 3. 4. 1: NMC Team A before their first round (L-R) Lindon Whitfield, Keena Wilson, Matt Cuddihy and Gordon Fuz. 2: Matt getting one to line up in the Teams Challange. 3: Gordon tagging Keena in the final 4: Gordon left nothing in the tank and showed great style and wave selection. NMC’s favourite surfing son Josh Constable claimed the 1 Star ASP Golden Breed Pro, cleaning up his competition in the small, clean surf at the event’s back up site of Access 12, during the Noosa Festival of Surfing. The five times Australian Men’s Longboard Champion and 2006 ASP Men’s World Longboard Champion proved unstoppable in the final, opening up with a cracker 7.50 (out of ten) ride and followed up with an excellent 8.00 ride to secure a huge lead over the rest of the field. Constable surfed a smart heat in the tricky conditions. Mixing up his performance with skillful nose rides and massive off the top snaps just the kind of all round performance the judges were looking for, earning a well deserved 15.50 heat total (out of 20.00) to defeat Jared Neal (Aus), Taylor Jensen (USA) and Thomas Kibblewhite (NZL). As mentioned elsewhere, Matt Cuddihy came second in the Noserider while other stand outs were Keena Wilson making the Senior Women’s final and Glenn Martin making the O65s final. Apologies if I’ve missed any other NMC members but the club thanks you for your participation. 13. Andrew Engel & Libby Winter modelling the 25 Year anniversary t-shirt (stock still available); 14. PAGE 4 NeWSleTTeR www.noosamalibuclub.com Mar/Apr 2011 20th Festival another big success By Phil Jarratt. 1. Now that the dust is beginning to settle and the fog to lift, to mix a metaphor or two, it seems apparent that the 20th Noosa Festival of Surfing was another critical success, despite the fact that we got skunked a little for surf in the second half of the week. Of course, you have to expect bad years along with the good, but we’ve been so spoiled over the last few years that it was disappointing to have to move down the beach for the second half, particularly with the fantastic infrastructure we had at First Point this year. Going mobile also adds a couple of hours to a very long day for the event staff, which isn’t much fun. The surf at Access 12 was quite contestable most of the time, and on the high tide mornings it was briefly good. And on the low tide on finals day, the standard of surfing from the likes of Josh Constable, Taylor Jensen, Chelsea Williams and Harrison Roach made it look far better than it was. In any case, I didn’t hear any complaints about conditions, other than the occasional gripe that First Point wasn’t its former self. As anticipated, it was a tough year financially for the festival. You’ve only got to look around the sales signs in the shopping centres to realise that no one is spending any money. Still, our beach bar and our film and music nights in the Noosa Woods attracted good crowds despite the slightly dodgy weather, and most agreed that the entertainment was the best yet, with some smokin’ sets on Saturday night from Dallas Frasca, Marshall and the Fro, Band of Freaks and Asa Broomhall. Magic moments of 2011? Well, it’s hard to go past our opening ceremony, conducted beautifully in traditional Hawaiian style by Reno Abellira, assisted by 82-year old Barry “Magoo” McGuigan, who had flown up from Sydney for the weekend to celebrate life, which sometimes hangs by a slender thread. Chemo patients Magoo and MC John Stokes barely had a hair between them, but it was wonderful to see these two life-long surfers fighting back. And the sunset showing of Paul Witzig’s Hot Generation, right on the beach, preceded by a beautiful set of acoustic guitar from 2. 1. Christian Wach making it look better than it was 2. Gidget, Queen of the surf (AKA Layne Beachley) was all over it this year with hubbie Kirk Pengilly from INXS. Pics: supplied. Peter Howe and Tim Gaze, was pretty damn special too. And in the water, the SUPS race was sensational and the Seaglass Project Finless just amazing, both great additions to the festival, as was the Classic Malibu International Clubs Challenge, which really got the opening day off to a great start with just the right kind of team spirit. Big shout to NMC VP Peter White for all his help in putting that one together. It was a tough year, and we would not have got across the line without the amazing support of our 43 sponsors, headed up of course by lead sponsor Global Surf Industries, but including many local businesses who were pretty strapped after a lean summer. Our sincere thanks to all of you. Phil call libby on 5447 5810 if you’d like one! PAGE 5 NeWSleTTeR www.noosamalibuclub.com Mar/Apr 2011 Where the hell is that...?
