c xtÜÄ ctzxá News of Tau Psi Zeta Chapter - Alsip, IL Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Winter 2010 Edition Charise Bennett, Editor-in-Chief Touching the Past of Zeta... Founders’ Day Events By Soror J. Johnson In celebration of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority's founding dates, the Chicagoland Graduate (Alumni) chapters hosted the annual Joint Founders’ Day events. These annual events offer great opportunities to socialize with Blue and White family, as well as the chance to reflect on the history of the organizations, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future. The Joint Founders’ Day Sip was held in the Sigma House on January 9, 2010. Exclusive to Zetas and Sigmas, attendees had the opportunity to partake in a rededication ceremony. Following the rededication, fraters and Sorors danced the night away to the sounds of DJ Galaxie. The Blue & White Family met up again at G-Cues in the West Loop on Friday, January 15 to toast the Five Pearls. “Reclaiming Our Roots” was the theme for the 10th Annual Joint Sigma/Zeta Founders Banquet held on January 16, 2010. The banquet was held at NIKOS Restaurant and Banquets in Bridgeview, IL. Members of the Blue and White Family came out to reflect on the principles and honor the founders of the organizations. The night’s program included the singing of the Black National Anthem, a small play, a libation ceremony, a raffle for great prizes, and the singing of the Fraternity and Sorority National Hymns. Attendees danced, took photos, and socialized through the night. Looking forward to another blutiful celebration next year! From the Desk of the President: Greetings Sorors, Amicae, Youth, Brothers, Family & Friends! We continued our work this year by focusing on our four principles of Service, Scholarship, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood, but the real emphasis is on Service, Service, Service. Although we had some fun with our Let’s Chill Event, the Undergraduate Holiday Party, Blu Year’s Eve and celebrating our Founders and ourselves with our Phylacter Awards; we really focused on serving our community. We brought in 11 new members who got right down to work at our annual service projects at the Salvation Army and the Chicago Christian Industrial League on Christmas. Our toy drive allowed us to have fun and collect toys for needy children at local hospitals and in our community. Finally we continued to teach the community and our youth about Kwanzaa and focusing on our heritage. I hope that our efforts inspire you to give to your community and donate to our scholarship fund or join us at our next service project – see you soon! Sisterly, Charlotte D. Lane Tau Psi Zeta’s 6th Annual Toy Drive was held on December 11, 2009 at Fuddruckers in Calumet City. The entire TPZ family: Sorors, Amicae, Archonettes, Amicettes and Pearlettes along with friends and family came together for fun and fellowship to kick off the holiday season! TPZ broke the old record and set a new one by collecting over 270 toys to donate to Children’s Memorial Hospital, La Rabida Hospital, and Hope Village Shelter. This year's event was so successful that Santa Claus made a special trip from the North Pole to pass out candy canes and take pictures with the excited children!! Santa made time to check his naughty/nice list with promises to come back on Christmas Eve! Everyone who attended this event had a great time. Special thanks to the Fundraising Committee for another holly, jolly toy drive! Toys, Purpose, and Zeal Holiday Toy Deliveries By Soror S. Williams Armed with toys, purpose, and zeal, the phenomenal ladies of TPZ set out to spread some holiday cheer. With toys collected from the annual toy drive, the Social Action Committee went out to make deliveries to families in need. TPZ was able to bless the hearts of children at La Rabida Children’s Hospital, Children’s Memorial Hospital, and Hope Village with toys to brighten their holiday season. TPZ also blessed both the Durr and Pierce families with donations. The families were all smiles as they posed for pictures with members of TPZ. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, to the entire Social Action Committee and Chair Angela McGhee for their efforts in keeping TPZ communityconscious and action-oriented. 2 Thinking of People with Zest Christmas Service Projects By Soror H. Smith Thinking of People less fortunate is always a priority during the holiday season. In the spirit of giving and sharing with Zest, members of TPZ volunteered at the Salvation Army and the Chicago Christian Industrial League (CCIL) on Christmas Day. Sorors served guests at the CCIL's Annual Holiday Breakfast at the Roosevelt location in Chicago. Across town, despite the cold and rainy conditions, TPZ Sorors and Youth hit the streets in the Salvation Army's mobile service van to provide food to the dispossessed outside of Weiss Memorial Hospital. The TPZ family is thankful for the opportunities to help those in need and is mindful to count their blessings during the holiday season and throughout the year! Let’s Talk Perfect Zeal Haiti Relief Efforts By Soror D. Coleman Let’s Talk Perfect Zeal! That’s what was seen at recent events that were dedicated to the unfortunate families affected by the earthquake in PortAu-Prince, Haiti. TPZ members were found at Share Your Soles in Alsip and helping fellow Greek Sisters at Youth 1st Counseling Services and Metropolitan Family Services in Chicago. Over at Share Your Soles, TPZ Sorors and Youth worked to sort and pack shoes to send to Haiti. TPZ was in the right place at the right time because Derrick Blakely of CBS News was there to interview the Founder of Share Your Soles, Mona Purdy. According to the report, Ms. Purdy has been supporting the citizens of Haiti for many years by sending shoes donated by the citizens of Chicago. Soror Lynda Calonge, a native of Haiti, was also interviewed by Blakely and was able to provide information about the devastation from her family in Haiti. Not far away, more ladies of TPZ were found intermingled with other Greek sisters at Youth 1st Counseling Service and Metropolitan Family Services sorting clothes, shoes, toys, and personal items donated by generous Chicagoans for men, women, and children in Haiti. In another beautiful example of Sisterhood at its Finest, the TPZ family raised over $500 through Z-HOPE to send to the American Red Cross for relief efforts! Between the two service sites and the Z-HOPE donation, the true meaning of Sisterly Love was exemplified! 3 Taking Positive Steps with Zetas Z-HOPE: HIV Awareness Workshop By Soror S. West The month of February is not only Black History month as well as the home for Valentine's Day, it's also National Black HIV Awareness month. In order to spread the word on the importance of "knowing your status," TPZ's Z-HOPE committee provided an informative workshop and made available free HIV rapid -testing at the monthly NPHC meeting held on February 7, 2010. The purpose of this workshop was to really target the male audience and stress the importance of how being sexually responsible can save not only their lives but the lives of their partners. On site there were three representatives from the City of Chicago's Department of Health. They provided statistical information, condoms (male & female), as well as presented how easy and confidential testing is. African-Americans are one of the lowest testing populations but have the highest percentage of new HIV and AIDS cases. With statistics like that it was TPZ’s duty to present such data to the NPHC and encourage all to get tested and pass the word on the importance of knowing your status. The workshop was a success. Over 30 people were tested and from the representatives that was great! Felicia Hinton, who works for the Department of Health was very impressed by the participation and encouraged other organizations in the council to provide such workshops. Once again TPZ made an impact on the community by keeping it socially aware of the issues plaguing the community. TPZ takes great pride in providing the community with well-needed resources and outlets for communication on sensitive subject matters. Thanks to the committee members, speakers, and attendees who help to keep the community conscious of what is affecting them and their families. The Pearl Zone Celebrates Black History Month By Soror S. Flowers TPZ's Pearl Zone step team participated in Bolingbrook's 10th Annual Community Wide Black History Month Celebration on Saturday, February 13. This year's program was sponsored by the Fountaindale Library District and Bolingbrook Arts Council. The celebration included the South Shore Drill Team; poetry slang; Living Water Teen Choir; as well as a step performance by the ladies of Zeta, door prizes and much more. TPZ's president, Charlotte Taylor presented the history of Zeta and the meaning of stepping. Thanks ladies for showing what black pride and history is all about! 4 Tress Chic Salon Michelle Atkins, Proprietor 708-383-CHIC Tress Chic Salon is not your typical salon — it's THE salon that gives you the downtown look and feel without the downtown price! Byrd The Archonettes are no strangers to community service, but when it is coupled with one of their favorite restaurants, then “it’s all GOOD!!!” On a wintry December eve, the girls joined TPZ for the 6th Annual Toy Drive which collects toys to donate to several non-profit organizations throughout the Chicagoland and Suburban area. The Archonettes helped sort, label, bag and load the toys all while enjoying a nice Fuddruckers burger. This year boast the most Archonettes in attendance and each one played an important part all while displaying holiday cheer to each and everyone that joined us. • 4/1/2010 - Burger King (BK) Benefit Night - 4545 W. 95th Street, Oak Lawn, IL. | 5p-8p • 4/4/2010 - Easter Day Service Project - Chicago Christian Industrial League 2750 W. Byrd The Thanksgiving season is a time for sharing with family the things that you are thankful for throughout the year. But, to the Archonettes, it is a time to come together and lend a helping hand to those in need. Before the turkey and dressing, the Archonettes along with the Zetas and Amicae gather at the Salvation Army for their annual service project. This year, the group wrapped bibles, sorted and bagged peppermints and served meals to the homeless. The Archonettes and service is one of the best ways to start your joyous holiday. 6 By R. Byrd Procrastination is not in the plans for the Tau Psi Zeta Archonette Club since they have been the Youth scrapbook champs for the past few years. In order to achieve this status, the girls begin working on the scrapbook 2-3 months in advance. The book covers all the activities conducted throughout the fiscal year. The Sorors from chapter are on hand to assist with the task but they let the girls use their creativity and vision to layout the pages. Once the book is complete, the girls will present it at the Regional conference in L o ui s vi l l e , KY on Memorial Day weekend. Good Luck to the Girls!!! Omicron Delta Chapter at Eastern Illinois University The Sorors of Omicron Delta Chapter have been having a successful semester so far. They have been very active on Eastern Illinois University’s campus raising money and raising awareness for a variety of causes and issues with their fundraisers and educational events. This semester, the ladies have held two educational forums. “Black Greek 101” was a discussion on fraternities and sororities. It was very informational and relevant to give others a realistic idea of Black Greek Life. The second forum, “How does slavery affect African-Americans in society today?”, gave attendees the opportunity to weigh in on the impact of historical injustice and reflect on the struggles that African Americans still face today. Omicron Delta let their actions speak louder than their words with two fundraising events: “Change for Haiti” and “Crush for a Crush.” The fundraisers raised much needed money for Haiti as well as funds to help support the chapter. Omicron Delta looks forward to their upcoming events. On March 9th, they will be performing community service at a local elementary school. The ladies will read to the children and encourage literary awareness in the event titled, “Real Women Read.” On March 11th, they will have a spring informational. Sorors’ Super Semester By Soror C. K. Archie Sharing the Season with Sorors By Soror L. Buckner Highest GPA Recipient: Soror Cheryl Mosely By Soror C. Peace The members of Omicron Delta and their advising graduate chapter Tau Psi Zeta had a w o n d e r f u l opportunity to bond at the annual Holiday Party. The holiday party is a great chance to break down the graduate and undergraduate lines to foster learning and sisterhood across the ages. Held on December 27th, 2009, everyone who attended had the opportunity to get to know one another better, hang out and relax over the holiday season without the pressures of school and work. Older Sorors shared stories about how Zeta was in their day, there were lots of photos taken, and a great time singing karaoke. It was also a great opportunity for Charms to connect with each other. Each undergraduate member is paired with a graduate member. The charm system creates an atmosphere for a one on one relationship to help the undergraduate learn the business of Zeta via a mentor, to have their questions answered, and to foster a smooth transition from undergrad to graduate level. Tau Psi Zeta and Omicron Delta look forward to the next collaborative effort—Omicron Delta’s Chapter Leadership Retreat, which will be held on March 13th. Each year Tau Psi Zeta Chapter honors a member of Omicron Delta, their sponsored Undergraduate chapter, with the highest GPA Award. The 2010 recipient is Soror Cheryl Mosely. She has definitely upheld the founding principle of Scholarship. Mosley, a Senior studying Communication Studies with a focus on Public Relations and a minor in Advertising, currently holds a GPA of 3.09. She serves as the current president of Omicron Delta Chapter. She also is active in several other student organizations on Eastern Illinois University’s campus. She is the Historian for N.A.A.C.P., the chapter representative for NPHC and an active committee member of the P.R. Marketing Committee for the Black Student Union. Soror Mosley has a proven track record of balancing education, Zeta, work, family and personal life. She lives by one of Zeta’s greatest mottos: “When Zeta calls, we answer one and all.” Cheryl has been a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority since April 2008. 7 The Adult Auxiliary of Tau Psi Zeta Chapter Toys and Presents for OtherZ by Friend J. Richardson The Amicae are always available to assist, and that was proven again during the holiday season. The Alsip, IL Amicae Chapter worked hard for months gathering items for well deserving families and organizations. They donated toys to two families in need as well as to two shelters: Wellspring Center for abused women and HRDI for women recovering from substance abuse. It was a pleasure to give away over 12 bags of toys and clothes to these families and organizations. Being a blessing to others is a blessing in itself. Once again, the Amicae Auxiliary should be commended for a job well done!!!! Trying to Produce new MemberZ By Friend J. Richarsdon 3A Advantage: Amicae Auxiliary of Alsip, Always Available for Assistance! Girls just want to have fun - and that's exactly what the Amicae and their Friends of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority did at the Amicae "Meet and Greet." Held at Aces Soul Food Cafe on January 25th, the Amicae put their best foot forward when they invited interested young ladies to come out to discover the beauty and fun in being an Amicae. Their friends, the Zetas were on hand to also lend their support. Information was presented, refreshments were provided, and games were played. The "Match Game" will never be the same! It was the perfect way to socialize and generate interest in young women considering joining a winning group that provides service to the community. Many thanks go to Amica Denyel and Amica Sheri for doing an excellent job of coordinating this lovely event. Once again the Amicae laid it out with Treats and Popcorn at the MovieZ a fabulous movie night. On February By Friend J. Richardson 12, 2010, Valentine’s weekend, the Amicae showed love to each other and their friends the Zetas, by hosting another movie night. Movie-goers had good fun and fellowship with one another while watching another Tyler Perry Production— "I Can Do Bad All By Myself." And they couldn't forget about the children. The future Amicae, Zetas and Sigmas watched "Up." This is a signature Amicae get together and everyone who attends has a great time. The Amicae plan on doing it again next year, same time - same station. 8 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. ~ Tau Psi Zeta Chapter Finer Womanhood Month ~ Calendar of Events Sunday-March 14, 2010 ~ 10:30a Finer Womanhood Worship Service Joy Fellowship Baptist Church 1025 E. 175th St., Lansing, IL 60438” “A Chapter that Prays Together - Stays Together” For more information, please contact: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Pearson Tau Psi Zeta welcomed the Zeta Class of Sorors into the Divine Sisterhood on December 16, 2009. Sorors Willetta Moore, Clarissa Davis, Robbin Lewis, Sharlena Williams, Antrilla Gantt, Lauren Martin, Danielle Coleman, Danielle Powell, Keenya Booker-Law, Pamela Estwick and Alicia Robinson immediately hit the ground running and working for Zeta. These 11 Zealous Women are represented on every committee within TPZ. They bring experience and skill sets in marketing, music, and mentoring. A very comfortable attribute about the Zeta Class of Sorors is that they are not afraid to follow or even take initiative to get the work of Zeta done. These Sorors are working as a cohesive class to collect pictures for the chapter’s website and compiling them in categories to reflect Zeta’s principles. In addition, they are also collecting gowns from Sorors and friends that will be donated to the Glass Slipper Project, a service project TPZ participates in yearly. TPZ’s Zeta Class Sorors are well on their way to leaving their unique mark in the chapter’s history. They have created a wonderful and telling scrapbook of themselves that gives detailed explanations about who they are as individuals and as a class. Their formal celebration is scheduled for April 17, 2010 at the Charles Hayes Center. CongratZ Ladies and may your Zeta Light continue to shine! Tau Psi Zeta Recognizes its Own By Soror S.
