of the 11 offered sports: Golf, Rhythmic Gymnastics,
Powerlifting, 5-Pin Bowling, Swimming, Athletics and
Soccer. Every one of the 33 athletes had awesome
performances at the national level.
The CBS athletes represented our town and
province with pride, great sportsmanship and fantastic
athletic competition. The NL bowling team was comprised
of 5 bowlers – Preston, Darrin and Jessica from CBS, Deon
Cantwell from St. John’s and Marjorie Short from Mount
Pearl. The team had a great competition starting from
day 1, Wednesday, July 9th, when the team bowled three
back to back games – finishing up at midnight!! Despite
the late night performance the team grabbed 13 of the
available 24 points. With all three CBS bowlers beating
their qualifying score it was a good way to start the Games.
The team goal was to have an average over 700 during
these games and with a Game 1 average of 698 the team
was close.
The bowlers took to the alley again on Thursday
afternoon for back to back games against Yukon and
Alberta. With some great scores the team was in high
spirits heading into the final team games.
The final team games were bowled on Friday,
July 11th, with the team meeting their goal of a team
average over 700 by coming in at the final game with an
average of 744!! The team took all 8 points in the final
game and were in great spirits. It then turned into waiting
game as medals were not being presented until Saturday.
On pins and needles, the bowlers went to medal
presentations just wondering if their name would be called.
Using the Pins Over Average bowling score
method, Preston Spurrell was thrilled to come home with
the individual bronze medal, Darrin Puddester was ecstatic
to run to the stage to pick up his silver medal and Jessica
McGrath-Taylor was in disbelief as she walked forward
to receive her gold medal! A great job by the CBS Bowlers
and we’d like to congratulate them all on a well done
performance.
Rhythmic Gymnastics is making a comeback in
Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador with an
almost 20 year hiatus. Both the Mount Pearl Club and
CBS Club now offer rhythmic gymnastics. Meghan Arnott
practiced at both clubs this year to get in plenty of practice
before competing for the very first time at the National
Level. Meghan competed in Level 1 and performed all 4
apparatus’: hoop, ball, ribbon and rope. Her main goal
for the National level was to keep in time to her music!
On Day 1 she had some trouble with nerves and rushed a
couple of routines but had some good conversations with
her coach and returned on Day 2 for beautiful routines
done in time to her music! Meghan came home with a
bronze medal in all four apparatus and a bronze medal for
the all around!
Special Olympics Newfoundland & Labrador
were thrilled with the results they saw at the National level;
with the team bringing home a total of 54 medals: 23 gold,
13 silver and 18 bronze. Special Olympics NL is active in
14 community clubs throughout our province; providing
individuals with an intellectual disability the opportunity
to practice and compete in a variety of sports. To become
involved or to find out more information about Special
Olympics please call (709) 738 1923.
