WELCOME | TABLE OF CONTENTS
VAFF: NEXT GENERATION
After a dozen years, hundreds of films screened, over a thousand
previewed and meeting many, many talented filmmakers, there is a
small tear in my eye as I realize that my “baby” is all grown up and
ready to take flight.
This has been a transition year for the Vancouver Asian Film Festival
as it welcomed its new and very capable Executive Director Don
Montgomery. Like a worried “Mother” I hovered ever ready to assist,
but realized that Don and the VAFF team were more than able to take
the Festival to next level. As I take a backseat to the activities, I am
proud and extremely excited to see how the Festival will grow and
evolve in the next few years. VAFF’s successful spin-off event, The
Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon (MAMM), which was developed as
a means to support and encourage emerging local Asian filmmakers to complete a film in a limited time
also ensures that the Festival will continue to have quality films to show into the future.
MISSION STATEMENT
The Vancouver Asian Film Festival Society (VAFF)
is a not-for-profit organization that provides a
forum for independent North American Asian
filmmakers to showcase their work to both Asian
and non-Asian audiences. The aim of VAFF is
to foster an understanding and appreciation
of today's independent North American Asian
filmmakers, while providing a springboard to
larger film festivals. The society endeavours
to represent the often ignored North American
Asians caught between two cultures. The
Vancouver Asian Film Festival Society will provide
a cultural bridge between the Asian and non-Asian
communities as well as the Asian communities
themselves.
This is not a farewell, but an acknowledgement that the Festival is experiencing a rite of passage into its
next stage and I can already see its wings…….

Welcome to the 12 edition
of the Vancouver Asian Film Festival!
th
We’ve put together a terrific program of over 40 films from diverse
Asian filmmakers. Many of the films are premieres with filmmakers,
cast and crew in attendance.
We couldn’t have a film festival without parties so we’ve gone the
extra mile this year by hosting a great party every night of the festival.
We invite you to join us and mingle with filmmakers, actors, and other
notable guests. Come network and make new friends.
Special appreciation goes to my festival team and the dozens of
dedicated volunteers for making this year’s festival a huge success.
A very big ”Thank You” to our funders, donors, sponsors, partners,
suppliers, members and friends for their generous support.
I would like to acknowledge past Executive Director Barbara Lee for her vision in creating VAFF eleven
years ago and for her determination in presenting it to the community every year as a volunteer. Her
guidance has been invaluable during this transitional year.
This year’s VAFF promises to be one of the most exciting and entertaining festivals we’ve ever presented.
Please tell your friends about us. We look forward to seeing you!

VAFF VIP / INDUSTRY / MEDIA / Passes
Even with a pass or ticket, you should arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the
screening to guarantee a seat. Give yourself ample time to park and get settled in.
A generous allotment of seats are reserved for pass holders at each screening. While a
pass does not guarantee seating, pass holders are allowed access until that allotment has
been reached. Pass holders should arrive for screenings at least 30 minutes before show
time, and join the appropriate line-up. There will be two line-ups: one for ticket and pass
holders (from which pass holders will be seated first), and another for rush ticket purchase.
If pass holders arrive after the 30 minute mark, they may be redirected to the rear of the
Rush Ticket line-up if the pass-holder allotment has been reached or if the screening is near
to capacity. Should seats remain available by the time they reach the Box Office, they can
present their pass to receive a rush ticket and enter immediately.
Buy Tickets & Passes Early
The majority of screenings sell out fast and VAFF special events are very popular.
Don’t miss out on your opportunities to mingle with filmmakers, actors, and other industry
guests at VAFF. Get your tickets and passes early.
Rush Tickets
In the event of a sold-out program, a limited number of rush tickets may become available
immediately before the show. A separate line for each sold-out program will be formed
outside the venue box office approximately one hour before show time. As tickets become
available, they will be sold to individuals in line order while supplies last.
Venues and Parking Info
All VAFF screenings take place at Cinemark Tinseltown Theatre, 88 West Pender Street,
Vancouver. Go green and walk or bike to the theatre. You can also get to the theatre by
Skytrain or bus. There is an underground parkade at the Tinseltown complex. You can
get three hours free parking with your parking stub validated by the theatre. If you are
attending more than one program per day, you can get an additional three hours free

Join us for an informal luncheon in a most serene setting where we will announce this

Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, the first of its kind outside of China, is an authentic
representation of an age old garden tradition that reached its peak in the Ming Dynasty
(1368-1644).
The Garden is characteristic of the private spaces within a Ming scholar’s residence. With
its asymmetrical arrangement of rocks and plants, its winding paths and corridors, and
the vistas that overlook its courtyards, the Garden emulates the rhythms of nature. Ming
dynasty scholars, the elite of their time, lived and worked in their garden, sharing these
enchanting spaces with friends and family of all ages. Like any home, a scholar’s garden
was filled with energy, but also offered quiet moments for contemplation. The golden
glow of the autumn sun illuminates a dazzling array of maple and gingko leaves in
vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange. Your luncheon ticket includes free admission
($10 value) to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.

DAY 1: THURSDAY NOVEMBER 6 | PROGRAM 1
OPENING NIGHT | 7:00PM - 9:00PM
Sport and culture, charm and comedy open this 12th Annual Vancouver Asian Film Festival. We are thrilled to welcome back director Jessica Yu, a VAFF alum from
our very first Festival, with her hilarious feature film debut, PING PONG PLAYA. Jessica has been often and affectionately quoted for her 1997 Oscar acceptance
speech for Best Short Subject Documentary: “What a thrill – you know you’ve entered new territory when your outfit cost more than your film.” And opening the
program is Jason Karman’s reminder to us all of Vancouver’s famous “yo-yo playa,” Harvey Lowe, in the short STATE OF YO.

A

arrives
unexpectedly with nowhere to turn. Detective
Sam Spade agrees to help – but things are not
what they seem. Slyly crafted on many levels and
reinventing the first act of the film noir classic THE
MALTESE FALCON, the film seamlessly blends an
assault of Asian references while adhering to the
original’s storyline. Acutely subversive with its
Asian stereotypes, the urge to laugh is infectious
but – does it cross the line?

A MOMENT IN TIME | 11:00AM - 12:45PM
Films can stretch the imagination as well as space and time. They transport
us into new worlds not only geographically but also by leaping us back
and forward to the past and future. YELLOW STICKY NOTES chronicles
an animator’s life. FOOD FOR THE GODS and LIGHT YEARS take us to an
apocalyptic future. WIANBU - COMFORT WOMAN, THE LETTER GOODBYE,
and SERVANTS OF WAR remind us of the brutality of humanity’s past.
While GRANGE AVENUE explores the recurrent theme of racism in a
different time.

OUR FAIR CITY - LOCAL TRUTH | 1:30PM - 3:30PM
Open up any of the local papers around town and discover Vancouver has her share of
sordid stories which lead to dramatic headlines. These local documentaries dig deeper
past the sensationalism to explore the complicated people behind the sound bites.
SCHOOL OF SECRETS exposes a Vancouver teacher’s systemic seduction of his students
and how it affected them as grown women. WARRIOR BOYZ examines South Asian gangs
and the youth attracted to the violent lifestyle.

SCHOOL OF SECRETS, a documentary
by Vancouver filmmakers Melanie
Wood and Eunice Lee, presents a tale
of truth - and its consequences - in
the story of a Vancouver teacher and
the teenage girls he seduced. Kept
secret for decades, it’s a story that,
when finally exposed, stunned the
community.

Looking at some of the challenges that
South Asian youth are facing today,
WARRIOR BOYZ sets out to understand
why they are vulnerable to the allure of
gang culture. In the past decade over
a hundred Indo-Canadian youth have
been killed as a result of gang violence.
Most of the victims came from middle
class families within a tight knit
community. This documentary follows
two teenagers over a semester in a
predominately South Asian school in a
suburb to find out why youth continue
to be vulnerable to this lifestyle.

THE PAWNS OF POLITICS | 4:00PM - 6:00PM
History repeats itself all too often, and sometimes when that happens, the consequences can strike at the core of a family, or a whole community – or an entire
culture. However, in the end, the resilience of people and their commitment to their community prevail against all odds. In David Yun’s THE PAIN WITH BEING
THIRSTY, wartime policies today are eerily mirrored by the past disregard of freedoms and rights. KORYO SARAM: THE UNRELIABLE PEOPLE, is a survival story of
how Soviet Koreans were forced into harsh exile but ultimately thriving today with their culture intact. And in VINCENT WHO?, a movement of social and cultural
activism emerges from a travesty of justice.

This film juxtaposes found footage of Japanese Internment camps in Arizona with a found
letter written by a Muslim prisoner accused of running Al-Qaeda websites and awaiting
extradition to Guantanamo Bay. In linking the two, the film traces a connection between
the way Japanese Americans were perceived during World War II and how Arabs and Arab
Americans are being treated in a post-9/11 world while raising larger questions about
the fragility of our own freedoms.

In 1937, Stalin began a campaign of massive ethnic cleansing and forcibly deported
everyone of Korean origin living in the coastal provinces of the Far East Russia near
the border of North Korea to the unsettled steppe country of Central Asia 3,700 miles
away.
Koryo Saram (the Soviet Korean phrase for Korean person) tells the harrowing saga of
survival and the sweep of Soviet history through the eyes of these 180,000 deported
Koreans, who were designated by Stalin as an “unreliable people” and enemies of
the state. Through recently uncovered archival footage and new interviews, the film
follows the deportees’ history of integrating into the Soviet system while working under
punishing conditions in Kazakhstan, a country which became a concentration camp of
exiled people from throughout the Soviet Union.

In 1982, Vincent Chin was brutally murdered in Detroit by two white autoworkers at
the height of anti-Japanese sentiments. The judge, however, sentenced the killers to a
mere $3,000 fine, three years probation, and no jail time. This decision galvanized Asian
Americans around the country to unite for the first time across ethnic and socioeconomic
lines to form a real pan-Asian community and movement. The multiple legacies and the
impact of the case on the Asian American community is explored through interviews
with key players from 25 years ago as well as with a whole new generation of activists.

Up, Up and Away: The Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon (MAMM) 2008
The fourth annual Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon (August 10–26) saw several changes to the
contest format from previous years. This year, teams declared a fixed genre, were provided with script
mentorship, and then attended an adjudicated pitch session, followed by two weeks in which to shoot
and edit a 9-minute short.
Awards for the top three films were provided by the Cineworks Independent Filmmakers’ Society.
Sponsorship and airing on cable TV was also provided by Shaw Multicultural Channel (SMC). The
four-member adjudication panel for both the pitch session and the final film submissions included
representatives from VAFF, Cineworks and SMC as well as a local independent producer and
documentary filmmaker.
All fifteen registered teams successfully completed the contest by the final deadline. A two-hour
premiere screening (September 6) and awards ceremony was followed by a fabulous wrap party at
Kentizen Fusion Lounge.
Feedback from participants, the adjudication panel and the viewing audience was overwhelmingly
positive. Many of the team leaders have plans to submit their films to other festivals, to shoot other
projects, or are working on existing projects in various stages of development.
The rise in quality for the entries this year is an encouraging marker for the future of the contest,
which I hope will continue emphasizing a solid pitch session and story outline, increasing the level
of script and technical mentorship available to the teams; and raising the quality of the scripting,
acting and editing.
