The Great Patriotic War
Speaker Mark Albertson
Wednesday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Town House
To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the most
devastating land war in history, Mark Albertson will
speak on the titanic clash between Nazi Germany and
the Soviet Union in which millions died and many of the
greatest battles of World War II took place.
Mr. Albertson is a historical research editor at Army Aviation magazine and is the historian for the Army Aviation
Association of America. Mark is a long time member of
the United States Naval Institute. He has authored several books and is currently at work on another, Sky Soldiers: The Saga Of Army Aviation.
Mark teaches as an adjunct in the Extended Studies Program at the Norwalk
Community College. He has published numerous articles on issues of history and
current events. For the Lifetime Learners Institute of Norwalk Community College,
he teaches six courses. He also lectures throughout the state on a wide variety of
historic topics.
At the Society , a small exhibit on WWII is on display and it may be viewed at the
time of the lecture. Three booklets in the exhibit published by the Historical Society
on the men and women from New Canaan who served in the War are items often
requested for reference.
This is a return visit by Mr. Albertson, who is a well-known lecturer in New Canaan.
Refreshments will be served following the meeting.

years the tradition continued.
At the first social, many special cars were
shown. A 1904 Northern, one of the first cars in
New Canaan was featured, but other equally
special cars were on show, including a 1929
Dussenberg, a 1974 Ferrari Dino, a 1972 Silver
Shadow Rolls Royce, and a 1911 Apperson.
This amazing event highlight the popularity of a
highly collectable object, the automobile. We
are most appreciative of the support of the
garage owners and sponsors, without whom this
day would not have been possible.
For the Historical Society, the House of Cars
event will provide funds for the preservation
needs of our buildings and our collections.

To commemorate Veteran's Day, local author Ken Oxman
will discuss his book, Reluctant Assassin, inspired by his
father’s experience in World War II and his own experiences
in the military and in his world travel.
War threw the Rams for a Loss
By Ed Chrostowski
It was summer, July and August,
exactly 70 years ago when the world paused
to reflect on the most calamitous six years in
history.
In the dwindling days of July that
year, the atom bomb was perfected and within two week the Japanese cities of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki were reduced to ruble. On August 15, 1945, Emperor Hirohito agreed to
Japan's unconditional surrender, formally
ending hostilities that had engulfed the entire
world after Hitler's rampage in Europe and
the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Death and devastation were widespread,
but the pain was particularly acute when wartime
targets were close to home. Such was the case
in New Canaan. Thirty-eight local men lost their
lives in wartime service to our country and the
tragedy seemed especially concentrated on the
1939 New Canaan High School football team.
1939 New Canaan High School Football Team
1st row: Mike Vitti, Gabriel Barrales, E. Steele, H. Little, Frank
Siroco, Frank Lato, Thomas Casciari, Emil Annunziato, Vincent
Vitti.
2nd row: Lewis Benko, Stephen Benko, Anthony Saggese, Jack
Reddington, Domenick DePalma, Laurence Cerretani, Jerry Lambo, J. Philips, William Jorday.
3rd row: Michael J. Vitti, Ralph Saggese, Rodney Conner, Arthur
Miller, J. Patterson, J. Steele, Earl Uitendaal, Donald DeForest, V.
Miller, Domenick Calitri, Coach Loren J. Keys
Two members of the starting backfield, Lew Benko and Rodney Conner, were killed in action. A
third, Bill Jordan, was critically wounded and the fourth, Bill Jones, survived battles in the steamy jungles of several South Pacific islands.
Jordan was a private in the Marine Corps invasion force that carried out the largest amphibious
landing of the Pacific War in April, 1945, at Okinawa. He was wounded a month later in a bloody battle
that lasted for 82 days with heavy losses on both sides.
Benko, a Marine Corps sergeant, was a veteran of the bloody invasion of Guadalcanal in August,
1942, was killed in action on another Pacific island, Iwo Jima, in February, 1945.
Conner, a corporal in the medical corps of Army ski troops in Italy, was killed in March, 1945,
when he was shot by a Nazi sniper as he was tending to a wounded soldier,
Jones, then a sergeant in the Marines, fought through several campaigns in the Pacific--Bouganville, the Gilbert Islands, the Marshalls, Luzon and Leyte---before coming home that September 70
years ago.
The four of them had formed a formidable backfield for the New Canaan High team, known as The Red and
Black before they became the Rams.
When all the wartime carnage finally ended. Conversations among veterans returning home from
battlefields all over the world revealed that when Jordan was going ashore at Okinawa with a Marine Corps
invasion force under heavy fie in April, 1945, a home-town pal, Steve Benko, Sr., was with another Marine
Corps unit simultaneously establishing a beachhead under stiff Japanese resistance on the other side of the
same island.
There was still another remarkable New Canaan coincidence on a war-torn island in the Pacific one
summer more than 70 years ago. In August, 1942, after surviving the invasion of Guadalcanal, Lew Benko
was watching reinforcement troops march into camp and there in the ranks was his brother, Steve Benko ,
Sr., then a red-headed Marine sergeant. Thousands of miles from home, after years of separation, there
was a re-union on an island they never heard of before.
Jordan and his many siblings were always active in community affairs and he served as the town
tree warden for many years. The Benko brothers were from a long-time New Canaan family and Steve retired after serving as a line supervisor for the power company. Conner, hardly out of his teens, was the son
of “Pop” Conner, remembered by many as the Connie Mack of New Canaan sports, and the brother of Cherida Conner, long-time owner of an upscale women's boutique in town. Jones, now 90 and still living in town,
retired as a lieutenant after a stellar career in the New Canaan Police Department.

A REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT & THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
OFFICERS AND GOVERNORS
2014-2015
The Society celebrated its 125th anniversary this year with a full program of special events in
recognition of its birthday. We are the oldest New Canaan non-profit in continuous operation.
PRESIDENT
The kick off was a two day celebration in October which began with recognition of the living

presidents of the Society followed by a concert of colonial music. The program started with
the issuance of a Proclamation by First Selectman Robert E. Mallozzi, III declaring October

locating the presidents for invitations, it was interesting to find that they were now living as far
away as Bermuda and as near as Wilton, but only four are still in New Canaan. The presenTREASURER
tations were made by Liz Mallozzi, chairman of the evening, introduced by 125th Chairman
Carl Bulgini
Susan Serven. The presidents recognized were John R. Schoemer, Kathy Schomer, Janet

This was followed by Colonial Day with re-enactors, museum tours, music , food and a general store stocked with reproductions from another era. A perfect combination of activities
only slightly hampered by a steady drizzle. The two events were a memorable start to the
year.
Wonderful programs in March celebrated New Canaan’s history. James Bach’s presentation
on “ Yankee or Yorker” brought to light the complex border arrangements between New York
and Connecticut. Later in the month our Cracker Barrel program featured a panel with Ed
Chrostowski, Don Hersam, Jim Bach, Wilma DeiCas and Fiz Tomaselli. It was a program the
audience loved and participated in and one that will be repeated.
The year ended with an unique fund-raiser, House of Cars, spearheaded by Susan Bishop
and Joanna Williams. This is an event that will be difficult to top.
This year two exhibits presented items from our large textile collection. Each show featured
articles that would have been worn or used widely during the period of the Historical Society’s
founding in 1889. The As We Were exhibit presented mock scenes of the Society’s founding
members. A present Board member, Stephen Gravereaux, is a direct descendant of Edna
Hoyt , whose wedding dress was featured in the exhibition.
Two major building projects were on the agenda. First was an upgrade of the HVAC in the
Rogers Studio completed with the help of grants from the Higley Foundation and the Community Foundation. And second was the restoration of the Hanford-Silliman House windows.
This project received generous funding from the 1772 Foundation and the Jeniam Foundation
with additional funds gifted by the Rotary Club.
The Society improved its online presence with a new Web page design, frequent Facebook
postings, and increased mail contact. All things not thought of in 1889.
We thank all our members, donors and funders and committees for their help in celebrating
our 125th year.

A special congratulations to Patrick O’Neil, a member of the Historical Society since 1965, on his One Hundredth birthday!
In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to the following of members and supporters.
Elaine E. Cook became a member of the Society in 1977 and was a loyal member for over 30 years. Lainie (the mother of John Rogers who was
a president of the Society and the person most responsible for the move of the Rogers Studio to our property) was a great supporter who for many
years cared for the garden at the studio. A member of the garden club that tends and plants our gardens, she also assisted with flowers for events
and exhibits.
Nan Murphey Gray was a member for the past three years and as a life-long resident of New Canaan, she was a person who brought history with
her when she joined the Society.
George Moore, a member from 2011-2014, was well known in the Community as a manager at Merill-Lynch. He showed great interest in our Silvermine exhibit. As a long time resident, he had known many of the artists or their relatives and enjoyed sharing his memories of them.
Simone Whitlock was a member from 1979 to 1986 when she left New Canaan. Simone was an artist and frequent visitor who was always interested in our exhibits.
A special thanks for a $10,000 bequest of Janice Robert Wilford, who died on September 21, 2014. Her generosity is greatly appreciated and
the money is a wonderful addition to our endowment.

Teacher’s Feedback
“Loved the staff as they were very engaging.”
“The best part of the Early American Life program was the authenticity, number of artifacts, and the very
knowledgeable and friendly staff. Students came away with a much better understanding of colonial life.”
“Great way to teach then & now.”
“They loved learning about the tools (ax, musket, corn grinder, etc.) and they thought it was ‘crazy’ the way the students were disciplined in colonial times.”
Welcome to New Staff
Nicole Thelen, our Director of Education, has left to pursue a career as an 8th grade teacher in Norwalk.
Assuming the responsibility of Director of Education is Daryn Reyman-Lock. She returned to Connecticut three years ago after completing her PhD in Archeology in England. Prior to accepting this new role,
she worked as an adjunct History professor, conducted research on historic architecture, and assisted in
the preparation of exhibits at Greenwich Historical Society.
Michael Murphy will be an assistant at the Historical Society for the coming year. A history major in his
junior year, Mike is taking a year off before continuing his studies with the goal of becoming an archivist.
During the past two summers, Mike was an intern here and was an amazing help.

OPPORTUNITIES IN GIVING
The New Canaan Historical Society is always interested in adding appropriately to its collections. For the Library we
welcome books, maps, manuscripts, diaries, documents, photographs, family papers, business papers, and journals
pertaining to the history of the area. For the Costume Museum we are interested in period clothing and accessories for
men, women and children – particularly when these can be attributed to known individuals or occasions. In the Hanford
-Silliman House and the Society’s other museums there may be a place for furniture, paintings, and miscellaneous
items.
The Society is happy to receive funds for general or special purposes, including the care and expansion of its buildings,
collections, and services. Memorials to individuals may be arranged. You are invited to make the New Canaan Historical Society a beneficiary in preparing your will. This form is suggested:
“I give and bequeath to the New Canaan Historical Society, a not-for-profit corporation under the laws of the State of
Connecticut and located in the town of New Canaan in said state, the sum of _________ dollars to be used for the general purposes of said society as its Board of Governors shall determine” [as an outright gift] or “the sum of _________ in
trust, the income from which is to be for____________” [as a restricted gift].
The Silliman Society
The Silliman Society was created by the New Canaan Historical Society in 2000 to fill the need to recognize donors contributing or bequeathing $20,000 or more. The donors’ names will be placed on a plaque
prominently displayed at the New Canaan Historical Society’s archival addition. The Silliman Society recognizes the Silliman and Kellogg families for their support of the Society since its founding.
