It is with pride that I present our 2007/2008 Annual Report
and Financial Report.
Patrols
I would like to thank each and every one of the patrolling
members for their outstanding efforts in keeping our
little strip of sand safe from any of the inherent dangers
that Mother Nature places in our path. NO LIVES LOST
BETWEEN THE FLAGS. Unfortunately that was not the
case for other areas on the beach where there were lives
lost by people swimming when and where the beach was
not patrolled. To our members, stand tall and be proud of
your achievements.
Sportsman’s Lunch
To Greg & Janine Bell, Andrew Bell, Karen Browne and all
the staff from Ray White Surfers Paradise – thank you. They
certainly know how to put together an amazing Sportsman’s
Lunch. Holiday Inn Surfers Paradise was the new venue and
what a day it was. It was a learning venture for all of us and
another record fundraiser. As Greg has stated, next year will
be bigger and better. From all associated with the Club a
special thank you. To Shane Laker, thank you for organising
everything on behalf of the Club.
2007 Southport Golf Club Ladies
A magnificent effort has been achieved by the 2007
Southport Golf Club Ladies in raising a staggering
amount of $12,000 over a period of 12 months. Del
Herse, President, and her girls held raffles on ladies day
selling anything and everything to raise such an amazing
amount of money (great pickles!). The funds have been
put towards a new IRB which we will launch soon. A
sensational effort and thanks to all involved.
Major Sponsors
Our thanks to Centro Surfers Paradise and Secure Parking
(S&K Car Park Management) for their support of the Surf
Club over recent years. We look forward to continuing our
great relationship with you. It’s great to have these huge
companies, which are local businesses, put their money
where their mouth is!
Winner!!! Conrad Jupiters Summer
Surf Girl
We have had some pleasing events throughout the year
but the one that takes the cake is our very own Conrad
Jupiters Summer Surf Girl, the beautiful, witty, intelligent
and charming Miss Megan Crockford. What a night! The
ballroom was packed and everybody agreed that Megan
was THE ONE. Megan, like all of the contestants, worked
extremely hard for their Clubs, but we knew when it came
down to the tin-tacks, our baby had it in the bag Good on
you Megan!
Supporters Club
A big thank you to the amazing staff behind one of the
most important areas in the establishment, the bar. Thank
you for putting on a smile when it wasn’t always easy.
The Supporters Committee is the arm of the Club that
oversees the day-to-day operations of gaming and liquor
sales which is enabling our Club to prosper. This would not
be possible to achieve without the excellent skills of Sue
Sellings their Admin Manager. Thanks to the Committee
and a special thanks to Sue.
5
What can I say about Nerang RSL Management – Andrew
McInnes, Terry McDonald and Ange? Thanks heaps for you
support and it will come back to you in spades.
To Steve and Vicki Oliver, Karmen, Corinne, Kim and all at
Oliverskitchen. Thanks for being you. It’s a pleasure to walk
into the Club.
In General
All Clubs have to be managed correctly and efficiently and
with that in mind I must praise the team behind me who
do a marvelous job ensuring the Club is in great shape,
even allowing for expenditure for a new gym, new balcony
and stairwell railings plus monies in the bank for ongoing
improvements. It’s a pleasure to be involved with such a
progressive team. It’s extremely difficult to drive a vehicle
without a motor. Can’t thank you enough Mandy.
As I stated earlier our patrols are second to none and like
all of our patrolling members our Club Captain Khan Hamill
has been in the thick of it. Thanks Khan for your time and
dedication.
To Zayne Hamill our Vice Club Captain, thank you for your time
and support. Keep up the good work.
If we don’t have bronzies we don’t have a Club as such. Heaps
of thanks go to our Chief Training Officer, Scott Andrews,
and his crew with special mention of Breanna and Bart. Your
attention to detail is outstanding. Thank you very much guys.
Warren Peters as Treasurer has ensured the money keeps
coming in. He may be the only Treasurer around who won gold
at the recent Australian Champs. Good on you Wazza!
Our Director of Surf Sports, David Orchard, is another
Committee member who excelled in the competition arena
this season. Great work Orch.
Shane Laker has ensured that many projects were commenced
and more importantly completed over the past year. To those
of you who may have thought the Vice role was an easy one,
think again. Thanks mate. Your work does not go unnoticed.
We have a new Junior Activities Committee who are already
very active early on in the season. They are actively chasing
sponsorship and fundraising to maintain growth within their
operations of the Club.
As you all know it is difficult to run a Club without money so
it is with pleasure that I personally thank Mr Fundraiser, Craig
Thornton, for all of his efforts.
There are many people to thank including Big Pete, Finley,
The Ipswich Kid Cam, The Cripps boys - I could go on until I
am blue in the face. And of course a special thanks to those
members from other Clubs who head up to Surfers and help
out on patrols. Very much appreciated.
Derek Kilgour from Gold Coast Photography has covered many
of our functions and days on the beach at Surfers over the past
year. He has provided us, free of charge, many photos that are
in this report. Thanks mate! A great photographic memory.
In closing I thank our Patrons, Sponsors, Supporters and
Committee Members for their support and commitment. You
are the backbone of the Club. We may be small, but we are a
Club with a lot of support and a goal to go forward.
It would be remiss of me not to mention and thank my
lovely family Pam, Laura and Jordan for their understanding
throughout the year.
Stuart Vial’l PRESIDENT
Secretary
In early 2007, due to Shane O’Connor OAM not seeking
re-election as Secretary for the upcoming season, I was
invited to nominate for this position.
I would like to express the satisfaction this association
has afforded me personally. It has been a pleasure and a
privilege to have served this Club. Unfortunately due to the
pressures of my business commitments, I was forced to
resign in April.
DES Lifesaving Development Fund
“More Beaches Under Guard”
In January 2008 we received funding to purchase a new
4WD to replace the existing patrol vehicle. Thank you to
the DES, Surf Life Saving Queensland who administer the
funds and Zupps Southport who made it possible for us to
purchase the brand new Mitsubishi Triton 4x4.
Dealer Principal David Miller with Peter Anderson
I would like to thank Administration Manager, Mandy
Hurst, for her assistance during my term. To our President,
Stuart Vial’l and my fellow Committee members, I would
like to say that working with you was always a pleasure.
My thanks for your assistance and I am confident that the
decisions and direction adopted will always reflect the
best interests of our Club.
My personal thanks and congratulations to our wonderful
Surf Girl Megan Crockford, who has put her hand up to
be our Acting Secretary for the remainder of the season.
Megan will be nominating for this position for the coming
season and I would like to think she will have your support.
She will bring much talent and enthusiasm to the job.
In closing I would like to thank my fellow members for
making my job so worthwhile. I look forward to seeing you
on our beautiful beach.

Finance
We’ve had a tremendous year from a financial perspective
in 2007/08 and I offer thanks to those regular participants
such as Stuart Vial’l, Shane Laker, Mandy Hurst, Megan
Crockford and Cindy Board, who helped with the dirty deed of
fundraising.
Unfortunately, there are too few of these members and I am
seeing an attitude creep in where some believe that the patrol
gear they use, the petrol that drives the lifesaving vehicles
and the myriad other expenses such as phone, electricity etc
are provided by some genie popping out of a bottle. It is as
important to find time to help raise the money to pay for the
lifesaving gear as it is to stand on patrol or compete for the
Club.
Unlike previous years, we haven’t needed to use the available
overdraft to help with cash flow; cash has been king this
year due to some great debt control from Mandy and some
balanced spending and income generation activities from the
Committee. A huge thanks to Mandy for the work she does
in making the numbers look good and for Louisa Holmes, our
Bookkeeper, for imparting her knowledge when required.
Highlights this year include a healthy cash balance,
borrowings down, donations up and assets increasing. The
down side included a bad debt from the Peter Lacey Sports
Foundation of $15,000 that was promised from the previous
financial year Sportsman’s Lunch. In addition, we’ve taken
on advice to increase our depreciation rates and hence this
expense increased proportionately.
We have spent more on competition, have taken the burden
off the previous coaching subsidy from the Supporters Club,
have spent some on rejuvenating the balcony and the glass
doors upstairs, and there is more to come with the projected
re-carpeting and possible bar configuration changes upstairs.
We are trying to balance the needs of our lifesaving
obligations, our interest in being a competitive force once
again, as well as spending much needed funds on upgrading
the premises so we can attract more functions.

Club Captain
Congratulations to all members for their service to our
Club this season. This year was outstanding in terms of
commitment and attitude. We welcomed quite a few new
patrolling members to our beach and it has been great to
see so many nipper parents taking part in patrols.
We certainly had another busy season at Surfers Paradise
and have dealt with a broad range of issues during
patrols. These have included missing children, minor cuts
and first aids, marine stings, drug overdoses, an armed
robber wielding a gun and unfortunately an early morning
drowning which involved a massive air and sea search.
We also had to close our beach due to massive seas and
swell which produced huge amounts of debris throughout
the Christmas/New Year period. In all, we conducted 355
rescues and 4945 preventative actions. As always Surfers
Paradise SLSC members handled each and every incident
professionally and effectively.
We welcomed “Cornerbox” back for a second season of
filming for “Surf Patrol”. They obtained a large amount of
useable footage from our beach and I would like to thank
all members who were involved. This show is a great way
of showing the public exactly what Volunteer Surf Life
Saving is all about. It is the real deal, no blue screens and
no makeup.
hard to find enough members on certain days. However,
we pulled through again and can now enjoy a well-earned
rest.
To Scott Andrews, our Chief Training Officer, once again
you did a marvelous job, attracting and training new
members. Many awards went through this year and
without you and your team it would be difficult to maintain
such a high level of education. Your efforts with training
and proficiencies and your general knowledge of life
saving are a great asset to the Club.
The Management Committee has been very positive
in dealing with life saving issues and this is greatly
appreciated. Thanks also to Mandy Hurst our Admin
Manager for all her help and assistance throughout the
year. It’s very much appreciated.
Thanks to Branch, Surf Life Saving Queensland and
Support Services and volunteers from other clubs who also
helped us in the provision of patrols throughout the year.
Finally, a big thank you must go to our sponsors. Without
their financial assistance we could not maintain our own
high standard of service.
Have a lovely break and I hope to see everyone back next
season!
Khan Hamill CLUB CAPTAIN
To all Patrol Captains and Vice Captains, thanks again for
helping ensure that patrols had adequate members signed
on and were performed to the highest standard. We are a

Zayne & Leon at Scarboro
Team Manager
What a busy and rewarding year this was for the team
with three trips away, the Ocean Assault series, and the
Coolangatta Gold and a board riding carnival on our beach.
Early in the season saw an excited and dedicated team
ranging from nippers to masters head off to Japan to visit
our sister club Kaike LSC. As well as being educational for
everyone in both clubs we had a great time and packed
a lot into the ten days. Our Japanese friends were truly
remarkable hosts and left no stone unturned in ensuring
we saw and did everything we could in the time that we
were there. I for one look forward to returning.
Our annual trip to Sydney over the Australia Day long
weekend is always good and this was no exception. This
was our fourth time to Sydney to compete at the Manly
carnival, Manly board riding carnival and the Australia Day
Freshwater carnival. It is an opportunity for our competitors
to really get to know each other, benefit from competing at
three carnivals in as many days and a chance to see how
they are shaping up against our NSW rivals. Once again
we thank the North Narrabeen SLSC for their hospitality in
letting us stay there and have full use of their facilities.
After missing last year it was great to see us return to
the Aussies in Perth. We had competitors in every age
group as well as a very good looking colour party thanks
to our Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl winner Megan
Crockford as flag bearer and our other female members. All
our competitors competed well and we came home with a
silver medal with Jane Laker coming second in the U19 surf
board riding. Leon Zagel our Team Captain was up there as
well making the final of the restricted and open surf races.
Throughout the season our competitors competed at all the
Jane Laker & dad Shane at the Aussies
Ocean Assaults with varying degrees of success, however
it was Leon Zagel that made it to the final at Southport in
the open surf race.
As we continue on our rebuilding phase it was terrific to
see new competitors come on board to create more teams
as well as having a go in their individual events. Most
notably this year was our U17 mens and open womens
beach relay teams which performed admirably considering
it was their first season together. We still need more
people to commit to training and joining in, especially in
the U15, U17 and U19 age groups of both genders, and
with this, more officials.
Our Club Champs ran in conjunction with the nippers and
masters and what a great success. Fantastic for morale
and helping build loyalty within the club. Senior Club
Champs are:
U15 Male ———————— Zac Orchard
U17 Female ———— Kandace Swaisland
U17 Male ——————— Andrew Laker
U19 Female ——————— Jane Laker
U19 Male ———————— Alistair Cran
Open Female ————— Melissa Bromley
Open Male————————Zayne Hamill
I would like to thank everyone that has assisted me this
year including the coaches, people that helped in loading
and unloading gear, setting up and pulling down tents,
marshalling age groups at carnivals and so on. Special
mention must go to Mandy Hurst who has helped me
enormously throughout the season with her organisational
skills and assistance in the entering of competitors in at
least three different systems. For the upcoming 2008/09
season I look forward to building on what we have
achieved this year.
Shane Laker TEAM MANAGER

Competition
Report
This season has shown to be a reasonably positive one for
surf sports in our Club. We have developed a small group
of regular trainers and competitors and they have done a
great job in promoting the club through their enthusiastic
participation at our beach and at carnivals. The group
includes a healthy mix of youth and experience, from
nipper/ cadet Zac Orchard all the way through the ranks
to his barnacle encrusted father David. Special mention
must go to Leon Zagel, Zayne Hamill, Khan Hamill, Bobby
Garrett, Anthony Santoro and Trent Scott. These guys have
made good on their pledge to be involved and have done
much for the club in terms of competition, encouragement
and at worst, making up the numbers.
We have welcomed several people whom are relatively
new to surf sports. ‘Gummo’, ‘Emu’, Megan and Kannitha
have all participated in training during the year and have
improved their skills immensely.
The Club was the beneficiary of a culture shock this
season. Daniel ‘The German’ Wilke graced us with his
presence diving head first into Surfers Paradise SLSC.
“Schnitzel”, “Bratworst”, “Fritz” or whatever other terms
of endearment were thrown his way, Daniel was a blast
of enthusiasm and some existing competitors could learn
from his training and competition ethos about having a
go. Some competitors this year seemed more content in
sunbaking near the tent than competing in the events that
they had been entered into.
Leon Zagel, Zac Orchard and Jane Laker were the
standouts. Leon qualified for many Open Surf and Board
Race finals during the Ocean Assault Series. He also
made the finals of the Open and Restricted Surf Race
at the State and Australian Titles. Zac displayed great
improvement on the board and made finals for both U14
and U15 at Branch and State level. Out of everyone, Jane
Laker brought home the bacon with silver in the U19
Surfing at the Australian Titles. Andrew Laker and Kandace
Swaisland also deserve a mention for their commitment
and team spirit.
In the beach events area, it was great to see Surfers
competing with distinction this year with some young
talented competitors. The U17 boys and Jane Laker were
the standouts. Jane managed silver in the U19 Flags at
State with little specific flags training applied. More is
expected next year as she concentrates in this area, one that
she has considerable talent in. In the 17’s, Matt Peters and
Robert Correa were a breath of fresh air and competed very
well with several placings in local and Sydney carnivals.
They learnt a lot about what their training and preparation
needed to be like to compete at the top level consistently
and what injury prevention methods needed to be applied.
In relays, Matt and Robert were backed up with Tom Shaw
and Andrew Laker. Again, several placings showed they had
talent but injuries hampered preparation and the final results
they deserved. Megan Crockford teamed up with Melissa
Bromley, Kellie-Anne Gallagher and Jane Laker to tear up
the sand in Beach Relay competition. They were certainly
the best looking team on the beach and with some training,
could become regular placegetters at local carnivals.
Overall, competitors need to set realistic goals and then
train to achieve those goals if they want to be serious
about competition next year. Some seemed content to put
in half training efforts, combined with regular drinking
sessions and then wonder why they weren’t competitive
at an elite level. Improved dedication, commitment, some
heart and consistency is something that needs to be
worked on. It isn’t about just turning up and making up
the numbers. This type of attitude affects the younger
competitors and what they should be trying to achieve. In
saying that, well done to the majority who gave 100%.
Warren Peters & Zayne Hamill
Masters
The 2007/2008 season saw us compete in four
carnivals – Brunswick, Branch, State and Aussies with
the World’s still to come in late July. The Brunswick
carnival was easily the standout with a big surf and
excellent post carnival activities. This is likely to
become an annual event. The State titles provided
us with our best team performance with many good
results, particularly in team events. With only 7
competitors we finished a very credible 8th with 106
points.
A few niggling injuries did not allow for a full strength
team at any carnival, and based on prior years this
trend is likely to continue as our weary bodies start to
show signs of fatigue.
Surfer’s Masters are mainly about team events. There
is great camaraderie amongst the competitors which
flows onto extra-curricular activities and this hat makes
the competition an enjoyable experience. If you would
like to become involved in this part of the club, please
contact the managers, Brad Edwards or Craig Chapman.
We may not be the best managers in the world, having
missed marking off for the surf teams at the Aussies,
but we are not bad at the extra-curricular activities.
Bring on the Worlds and 2008/2009.

December Surf Camp Boys
February Bronzies
Chief Training
Officer
It seems each year it’s getting harder and harder to write
this piece as each year I go on about the massive changes
that have occurred in the previous season and how well
we did to work with those changes and also how well we
did in terms of the number of awards we put through and
the number of new members. Guess what – this season
has been no different!
We started the season with a bunch of IRB Crew and
Driver awards in July, again thanks to Shane Lawler
and the guys at Northcliffe. This was followed by what
many will remember as their coldest ever proficiency!
I’ve never seen our members swim as fast as they did
that day! At one stage, I thought we would have to treat
a real hypothermia case rather than continue with our
assessment scenarios.
The season is a blur from then on! We again completed
two surf camps, one in October and one in December,
two Bronze and SRC courses, a few ATVs, a few 4WDs, a
few Advanced Resuscitation, a bunch of Operational First
Aid for our own members, plus a number of people from
various Clubs who are members of Operations Support and
a whole lot more. Big seas and the ‘Curse of the Bronzies’
lived up to its name.
Our membership collectively gained 320 awards, with 242
of those being trained and assessed here at Surfers which
again, is an increasing trend on previous years. Add to
these 156 junior competencies and 304 proficiencies.
I think you’ll agree it’s a very impressive effort.

Looking at the raw numbers, I’d like to issue the following
challenge to our members. By the end of the season,
I would love to see these new awards - 20 ARC, 30
15
ATV, 15 Defib, 10 IRB Crew, 10 IRB Drivers, 5 Basic Beach
Management (Patrol Captain) and 2 new trainers. Are you up
to the challenge? All these awards continue to strengthen
the level of service and professionalism that Surfers Paradise
SLSC can provide to our community.
neighbours will put through this many on a single day. We
ended up with four days and still didn’t catch everyone.
Please, make sure you get them out of the way early next
season – it will save you, Admin, Surf Sports, Coaches and the
Training crew a whole bunch of hassle.
As you can imagine, it’s been really busy for the small, yet
dedicated group of volunteer training officers, and despite
getting a few more people on board over the past few
seasons, sadly it was really on Breanna, Bart and myself for
most of it, but a big thank you to Pete, Cameron, Kellie, Ben,
Mitch, and Roxy.
At the end of every course in our debrief we tell you there’s
no better way to keep up your skills (and gain some new
ones) than getting out there and practicing. Two of our young
members Maddy and Mitchell are great examples of what this
means. They are out on the water every chance they can get
on patrol and both achieved very convincing rescues towards
the end of the season. Well done guys, you’ve made us all
very, very proud demonstrating your skill, vigilance, service
and dedication.
It has been our pleasure to have had the opportunity to work
with so many of our Club members. I don’t know of any better
way to get in there and amongst it all and really discover just
how many very cool and diverse members we have. Please,
see me if you’re interested in helping out, even for a session
or two.
Our assessors again did us proud, helping out at all our
proficiencies and most of our Junior awards and Bronze
assessments. Thanks to Ron, Pete and Bart. Without these
guys you’d be stuck with me assessing you and as Breanna
will tell you, I’m always toughest on the ones I love…
Despite the proficiency process being much easier than
previous, it was a little worrying to see the number of people
who didn’t complete them before Dec 31. We only have
about 150 people to get through whereas some of our larger
October Bronzies
The biggest change next season sees the introduction of the
Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management as a compulsory
award for all Patrol Captains, and some changes, hopefully to
make it easier to become a trainer with the introduction of the
TAA Skills Trainer module.
For now, enjoy your short break and we’ll catch you back on
the beach in a few months! Take Care.
Illius me paenitet, dux

Summer
Surf Girl
What a fantastic end to another successful season at
Surfers Paradise SLSC! On 10th May at the Gala Ball, I
was crowned the WINNER of the 2008 Conrad Jupiters
Summer Surf Girl and ambassador for SLSQ. I also raised
over $82,000 for our Club.
The win was a result of a lot of hard work and dedication
of members and supporters of our club and I would like to
make a special mention to a few incredible people who
helped me every step of the way through my journey.
Mandy Hurst, Cindy Board, Shane Laker, Stu Vial’l, Lynda
and Warren Peters, Sue Sellings, Craig Thornton, Breanna
Thompson and Scott Andrews. Thank you for all you work
and support!!
Andrew Worling, Megan & Shane Lawler
I also received an overwhelming amount of support from
business around the Gold Coast. To all you – Thank You.
Over the last ten months we undertook many fundraising
and surf awareness activities. We did BBQs at the Club,
Bunnings and BayStar Express Carwash; we collected
money at Indy, the Xbox Indy Party and O’Malley’s; we did
raffles at MBA Annual Dinner and the Millinery Collection
Lunch; and we threw a fabulous New Year’s Eve party. I
also had a ball helping out our Nippers with their Junior
Age Awards.
The final week of judging at Conrad Jupiters is a week I
will never forget. Over the four days we had interviews
with the media and the panel of judges. We did beach
activities at Northcliffe, community education with
the gorgeous kids from Coomera School and had the
opportunity to take time out at White Water World. The
week was very tiring, but I met some amazing people who
I know I will be friends with for life.
As I sign off as Summer Surf Girl for the final time (and
I have tears in my eyes as I do this) I would like to say
what an absolute honour it has been to represent Surfers
Paradise Club and thank you for giving me the opportunity
to achieve what I have! I now look forward to another
exciting year as a member of the most amazing Club in the
world and as ambassador for SLSQ.

2008
Sportsman’s Lunch
Our Sportsman’s Lunch was held at the Holiday Inn this year
as the demand for seats continues to grow for this marvelous
function. This is the major fundraiser for the Club each year
and we would like to thank everyone for their attendance and
contribution.
The auction items both public and silent were of the usual
high quality and mix of sporting and celebrity memorabilia.
Work has already begun on next year’s Lunch and promises to
be even better as we strive to make it ‘the’ Sportsman’s Lunch
not to miss.
David Fordham was the MC for the afternoon and the 300
attendees were entertained by AFL legend Ron Barassi and
former rugby union international and author Peter Fitzsimons.
Johnny Garfield kept the crowd laughing with his humour and wit.
The Lunch has become a calendar must thanks to the
enormous efforts of Greg and Andrew Bell and the team at
Ray White Surfers Paradise and we look forward to their
continued support.
There was plenty of feedback on the high quality of the meal
and beverage package complemented by good service which
all contributed to a very enjoyable afternoon.
Put 27th February 2009 in your diary now as next year’s event
will sell out quickly!

Building
Committee
This year has seen a few changes around the club that
have improved both the safety and looks of the club from
inside and out. These include:
Glass balustrade and side gate replacing the old
unsafe one
redevelop the foreshore and what impact this will have on
us. The time frame that all the redevelopment will happen
will also have a bearing on what we do and when.
The Committee would like to thank the many helping
hands that have done a stellar job in their respective
fields. Because of people like Richard Leal, Shane Carson,
Mongo, Khan and Zayne Hamill we get a top job done as
well as saving the club literally thousands of dollars.
Shane Laker CHAIRMAN
External roof over the gym replaced
Main door frames and windows repaired and painted
Balcony floor resurfaced (no more pooling water)
Gym now owned and operated by the Club
Audio visual system fitted to new gym including
digital TV
Main room and bar painted
Antenna replaced and relocated to provide better
signal to gym and Supporters Club
New reception desk in Supporters Club
Remove old barbeque area
Old signage removed
There are also plans to move the upstairs bar to the
southern end of the clubroom and fit new carpet, tiles and
airconditioning. This would open the room up and make it
more appealing to hire out.
These plans of course will be dependent on what is
happening to the area when Soul, Iluka and the GCCC

Gear &
Equipment
This season has seen the arrival of three new fibreglass
rescue boards and five new foam boards. The foam boards
have proved a hit with the bronze courses, especially with the
younger and female members since they are lighter and softer
than the fibreglass boards. They are also great for water
safety and surveillance in the water, however, they are slower
than the fibreglass rescue boards which is why they haven’t
been used as the primary rescue boards on patrol. Next
season, we will start bringing the soft boards down to patrol
to encourage more members to paddle the boards.
We have had a few occasions where boards have been
damaged while being transported to and from the
beach. Please take extra care and use two people where
necessary to try to remedy this problem. Boards will not
fit downstairs on the roof of the ATVs or 4WDs so please
make sure that all boards are taken off the vehicles and
left upstairs in the racks after patrol. If you find a rescue
board that is damaged, please mark it as damaged and let
me know so it can be taken out of service and repaired.
When damaged boards are used, they take on water which
adds to the weight of the board and decreases its life
expectancy. New rescue boards for the new season will
eliminate the need to use damaged ones.
Please make sure the equipment is washed at the end
of the day (especially the ATVs and 4WDs) to increase
their useful life. In the new season we will have new
flags and new flag poles, which will make our beach
look a lot smarter. When putting in the yellow flag bases
(pineapples) it is a lot easier to get them into the ground
by removing the flag and using the spaces at the base
of the sides. The Flag Linerupperer Officer has noticed a
difference in the alignment of the flags (they are becoming
a lot straighter), which many members have agreed makes
our beach look a lot more professional.
If you have any ideas or suggestions for new equipment or
better ways of doing things, please let me know. Keep up
the good work and see you all on the beach next season.
Finley Taylor GEAR & EQUIPMENT OFFICER
Radio
Congratulations all patrol members on another great
season patrolling Surfers Paradise Beach. Remember that
all radios should be on Channel 4 whilst on patrol unless
told otherwise by Surfcom. On some occasions there were
reports of our transmissions dropping out or not being
heard. To fix this problem please make sure the PTT (Press
To Talk) button is pressed for one to two seconds before
speaking, especially with the smaller Icom radios. Try to
keep radio transmissions short and sweet to minimize the
amount of air time. This will ensure that when another
station needs assistance, they will be able to call in
straight away and not have to wait for long, unnecessary
transmissions to finish. When using the radios, always
use correct call signs and terminology and try not to use
personal names unless absolutely necessary.
Due to recent confusion with call signs, when there are
Shannon & Fin
Peter flying out of the boat
more than one type of the same vehicle on the beach (i.e.
when there are two 4WDs on the beach), the call signs for
patrol vehicles will be as follows:
Toyota (Rotary) 4WD = “Surfers 4 Wheel Drive Hilux”
Mitsubishi 4WD = “Surfers 4 Wheel Drive Triton”
Older ATV with PA, yellow board racks
and shade = “Surfers ATV 1”
Newer ATV with no shade = “Surfers ATV 2”
When there is just one 4WD on the beach,
call the vehicle “Surfers 4 wheel drive”
When there is just one ATV on the beach,
call the ATV “Surfers ATV”
Congratulations to all those members who gained
their Radio Operators Certificate. The best way to gain
confidence in using the radio is to practice doing the
morning and afternoon status reports (start off with the
IRB radio checks and then progress to the actual status
report) where what you have to say is pre-determined.
Thanks to Scott Andrews for conducting Radio Operator
courses and installing and maintaining the PAs, radios and
flashing lights in the vehicles.
Finley Taylor COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER
First Aid
Congratulations to everyone on another good season.
We had nearly 74,000 visitors to our beach this year and
only 142 first aid incidents. This figure was made up of 1
fracture, 102 Minor Marine Stings, 1 Major Marine Sting,
33 Minor First Aid Cases and 5 Major First Aid Cases.
Twelve of these incidents required oxygen therapy and
none required resuscitation.
We had a lot of problems with the first aid room flooding
due to poor drainage and heavy rain. Apparently electrical
appliances and Oxy Vivas don’t react well to being
submerged in water! The Club had to purchase a new
freezer and send two of our three hard case Oxy-Vivas in
for servicing. I would like to offer a big thank you to Scott
Andrews and Janelle McMahon for their assistance in
mopping up the water on several occasions and to anyone
else who may have assisted at any other time. I do ask
everyone to remember that checking the first aid room
is part of every patrols responsibility and any problems
that can’t be fixed immediately should be brought to the
attention of the Club and the First Aid Officer. Hopefully we
can rectify the flooding problem before next season.
The maintenance bill for this year was kept to a minimum.
The total spend was $1,519.48 ($1069.11 for medical
oxygen and $450.37 for general supplies).
Thank you to all the members who carried out the checks
of the first aid room and Oxy Vivas during the season.
Due to your hard work and despite our hurdles, Surfers
Paradise SLSC has scored perfect results in the South
Coast Branch First Aid Room Inspection Competition and
will be accepting first place at the Branch Annual Dinner.
I hope you all have a safe off-season and I look forward to
working with you all next season.

Ray White Surfers Paradise
Fellow members, it gives me great pleasure to give you a
glimpse of the performance of our licensed club during these
very difficult trading times and some of our plans for the
future.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the tremendous
support that the ‘Bell Boys’, Andrew and Greg, through their
company Ray White Surfers Paradise have given to the Club
once again. Whilst we didn’t achieve the very high target
we set for ourselves, the Sportsmans Lunch at the new
Holiday Inn was an outstanding success in every other way
and we have only had very positive comments from patrons,
particularly about the quality of the food and service. I must
thank Jimmy Raptis for intervening on our behalf to make sure
we received a fantastic food and beverage deal on the day.
Tough Trading Times
Adding to the Licensed Area
As you would be aware the Christmas New Year holiday
period was beset by extremely bad weather and this affects
trading dramatically, however, a strong performance by our
caterer and his contribution to the bottom line enabled us
to improve slightly on our net profit for the third quarter. Our
bar staff have to be congratulated on their work performance
which has led to increased sales whilst containing costs and
improving service.
As this goes to print we are well advanced in adding the
upstairs area onto the Licensed Area of the Supporters
Club. This will have little impact on the normal day-to-day
operations in the short term but we will need to make sure
it has minimal disruption to Surf Club operations particularly
with our Nippers. It has been necessary as we need to expand
our operation and become more flexible, this will allow us to
have more functions and increase our bottom line returns.
Times are going to get tougher over the next few months
as far as tourism is concerned with the center of town
resembling a bomb site and the Illuka due to be demolished
shortly so we all need to support the Club as much as
possible. I believe building workers from these sites have had
a positive impact on trade and I hope we can maintain the
momentum.
The next part of the project is moving the bar to the southern
end and upgrading the kitchen to restaurant standard. We are
definitely a Club on the move.
Supporters Club
Management Team
My thanks to our Management Team from Nerang RSL but
particularly President Terry McDonald and General Manager
Andrew McInnes whose support has been and is key to our
future growth and ultimately managing the property ourselves.
My thanks to my fellow Supporters Club Board Members
for their contribution during the year and look forward to
continuous good results. Remember, good people make
difficult tasks look easy, whether it’s in business or sport or
life skills.

Junior Activities Committee
Introduction
The season witnessed a different approach to the nipper
program than that of years gone by. Essentially the
program was previously competitive based, with most
Sundays spent undertaking competitive events in the
water and on the beach. The program had its advantages
in that it rapidly prepared nippers for the rigors of
competition and fostered a highly competitive attitude
amongst members. Unfortunately we had lost a number
of nippers for various reasons and the Junior Activities
Committee (JAC) encountered the reoccurring complaint by
parents of these nippers, who sought more of a skill based
program.
For the number of nippers who did not complete regular
swimming training, the competitive nature of the program
appeared overwhelming to them, causing a substantially
high dropout rate. In today’s environment, there is also
a necessary high level of duty of care expected when in
charge of children. The situation presented also required
a different approach to funding the costs of a more
substantial training program.
Objectives
The JAC resolved early in the season to seek sponsorship
and appropriate a high level of funding to its training
program. In this regard, we were immediately and
generously supported and sponsored by Gold Coast
Developer Dudley Quinlivan, who provided the nippers
with the sum of $24,000 in sponsorship (Thank you and
well done Dudley!).
With this level of support, and a firm base from last season,
we were able to attract the services of high level coaching
staff in Damien Gulliver and Steve Brown. These guys were
previously part of the Club and have a great reputation for
the care and coaching of kids. Initial discussions developed
around building a skills based program that would
encourage and eventually lead juniors into the competitive
arena. The Coaches and Committee were all united in an
approach that would see a dramatic change to the Sunday
and midweek training program. The program was changed
to skill based and groups were organised around their level
of ability, not age. The Committee worked very closely
with coaching staff, to provide all necessary support and
program requirements. Our goal was firmly based around
equipping our young people with skills in an enjoyable
environment and keeping them in the sport.
Program Execution & Result
Training started on Sunday mornings in Winter 07 and
steadily increased. As the season progressed the level
of training was increased during the weekdays and on
Saturday mornings. Evandale was utilised weekly for
stillwater board training during the week and on the first
Sunday of each month. A strong emphasis was also placed
upon parents to get their children swimming regularly to
build strength, stamina and technique.
Over the season we witnessed many children’s skills
levels and proficiency dramatically increase. Children who
were initially intimidated by the surf, were swimming out
through the break and down to that Club south of here,
before running back and doing it again!
25
At season’s end the Committee and Coaching staff believe
the program produced 30-40 children who, with continued
development and training, will be competing at State level
in the next 12 to 24 months. This was a great result; a
result which has now set some good foundations for the
future of the Club competition base.
There are a substantial number of nippers who have
continued training into winter. This is a reflection of the
success of the program and furthermore, the reflective
of the overwhelming majority of parents and nippers
who were highly supportive of the program with limited
complaints. Our assessment in this regard, is the retention
rate of nippers will be high as a result.
Competition
In a rebuilding program, competition was not the focus
or priority. Senior ranks were generally depleted from
a number of years of members leaving the Club and it
was difficult to amass teams in the U13 and U14 ranks.
Many of our younger members were also not up to the
appropriate level to compete. Nevertheless there were
some outstanding results:
Our U14s won the Male Cameron Relay at the North
Burleigh Teams carnival;
U13 Zach Featherstone, made the Qld Cyclones Team after
winning the Branch Iron and Surf Race and went on to win
the Surf Race and get second in the Iron, Surf Teams and
Board Rescue at the 100 Years of Life Saving Interstate
Challenge held at Bondi 1st & 2nd December. He later won
the Queensland Iron at the State Champs.
Club Captains & Long Service
Recognition
Male Club Captain was awarded to Zac Orchard. There
could be no dispute this young man was the most obvious
choice and a very worthy recipient of the position. Zac also
received a long service award for his membership to the
Club which commenced as a green cap. Zac hits the surf
most days and is a top level board paddler. Throughout the
season he trained regularly with the senior competitive
group and represented the Club in junior and senior events.
He made the final of the Board Race at both Junior and
Senior State Champs and has been a regular on patrol
since gaining his SRC.
Madeline Zantiotis was appointed Female Club Captain
after an extensive investigation and analysis by the JAC.
Her dedication to the Club, competition results and respect
amongst her peers, was noted and rewarded with this
appointment. Madeline also performed water safety during
training and does patrols.
Congratulations Zac and Maddy.
Of special note was the outstanding member of our U14
females, Somer Bressan. Somer was presented with a
long service award for her commitment to the Club, joining
as a green cap. Somer is extremely highly regarded by all
concerned including parents and other members. She has
competed for the Club continuously for many years, giving
her best and has been a great role model and mentor for
other younger members. Somer always displays an affable
personality and is an example an excellent member. Well
done Somer.
Jaeden Sasaki won a number of places in various carnivals
including Branch, making the State Final in Swim and Iron.

Wagsaff) designed new look nipper swimwear receiving
great feedback from members and other clubs.
This year saw a greater level of involvement by parents
who assumed a number of important workforce positions,
resulting in a more efficient program. Many parents
completed their bronze and/ or SRC. Water safety was
highly organised and committed to each part of the
program. I believe our water safety was the envy of other
clubs. Thanks to all volunteers, including long time club
member, Keith Lutz.
There was an improved attendance at training sessions
where all who participated made good progress.
Senior Club members with appropriate skill levels joined and
assisted our training program. Thank you Shona, Shannon
and Travis, for your valuable efforts and assistance.
Thank you to McDonalds Surfers Paradise, who generously
donated a tent valued at $3000.
Committee Members
My thanks go to members of the Committee who saw out
the entire season. Team Manager Mick Zygadlo spent
a number of full weekends organising competitors at
carnivals. Rebecca Chambers and Sarah Wagstaff worked
tirelessly all season to ensure many thankless tasks were
undertaken behind the scenes. Their organisation of this
year’s Christmas function and Presentation Day produced
outstanding and unforgettable days. Thanks ladies for your
great efforts!
Thank you to Cold Rock Ice Cream Surfers Paradise who
generously donated food vouchers as good performance
awards.
Finally, thanks to all members and parents for your
participation throughout the season. The Club is now a
stronger place, as a result of your commitment and I wish
you all the best in the future.

Troops,
So here we are at the completion of another season (wipes tear
from eye). I don’t know about all of you. But I and most had a top
time even if we did spend a good chunk of it huddled in the trucks
with closed beaches. As I am new to this appointment “Youth
Development Officer” I do not have a great deal to report currently.
Aside from the excellent representation that Surfers had in the
form of Maddy Z and Jarrod W at the “Youth Excellence Camp”.
So I will move on to a brief outline of two new ideas I hope
implement in the 2008/09 season:
A buddy/ mentor system to help retain and vitalize the ever
diminishing 14-22 category
And with support from the Chief Training Officer and Committee,
upon completion of bronze training, a payback to the Club with
four weeks per person worth of nipper water safety
Looking forward to a top 08/09

Kaike LSC
- Japan
Our strong relationship with our Sister Club Kaike LSC
continued with a visit to them in 2007.
Friday 17th August
Fifteen members ranging from U11 through to masters
gathered at the Club for the flight from Brisbane to Osaka,
via Singapore.
Saturday 18th August
After a 6½ hour flight we arrived in Singapore. While we
were feeling a bit shabby everyone sparked up after a quick
refresh and a wander through Changi Airport admiring the
sheer size of the place. After a couple hours it was time
to board our next flight to Osaka. We arrived in Osaka late
in the afternoon where we were greeted by the Kaike LSC
President, Isao Nojima, holding a huge banner welcoming
us. Surfers Paradise member Kei Katayama was also there
to greet us and joined us for the rest of our Japan stay. I
might add at this point that both Kei and Jaeden being able
to speak Japanese made our stay a richer experience and
certainly made life easy for us as our interpreters.
Nojima led us to a bus waiting outside and we were off on
another four hour journey to Mount Daisen where we would
be staying for the first two nights. At 11pm we arrived at
our traditional hotel and found our rooms with rice paper
walls where we were to all remove our shoes and sleep on
the floor. But before sleep everyone was hanging out for a
shower as we had been travelling for 28 hours at that stage.
Most people were ready to collapse at this stage except for
a couple of hardy stalwarts in Norm and Stu who stayed up
and had a couple of beers with the hotel owners.
Sunday 19th August
It was down to a traditional Japanese breakfast with a
vast array of dishes containing some most interesting food.
After breakfast we gathered outside and walked to a local
500 year old monastery where we took part in a prayer
session and were “back slapped” by the monk with a piece
of wood. The idea of this was to take your mind off your
aching legs and back (sitting upright and crossed legged)
to enable you to focus on why you were.
The walk continued around the hills near the monastery
where we took in more sights of Buddha’s large and small
and other interesting buildings including one where we all
sat and had a go at tracing a picture of a monk using a very
fine brush. The monk then led us to where they live and we
were treated to their traditional vegetarian lunch.
Back at our accommodation we got ourselves ready for a
half hour bus trip to the beach to see the Kaike club, meet
some of their members, have a swim and generally relax.
It was an interesting beach with no surf and protected by
large concrete walls to protect against tsunamis.
Late that afternoon we walked along the beachfront to
a park where a BBQ beach party had been organised for
us. There would have been 150 people there including
the Mayor and other influential town people and Kaike
club members and friends. It was a fantastic night and the
Kaike club were tremendous hosts.
33
Monday 20th August
Cars had been arranged to take our cases to the next hotel
and we boarded the bus for some sightseeing. We drove
about 40-50 km around the peninsula where we took in some
great views from the lighthouse lookout. After this we drove
back along the coastline to the “Temple of the Sea and the
God of The Sea” These buildings were 1300 years old.
For lunch we went to a Japanese style buffet restaurant
which suited everyone as they could pick what they wanted
and cook it at their table (floor level). Then shopping! When
everyone was shopped out we went to our new hotel which
was first rate and prepared the kids for their home stay with
Kaike LSC families for the next two nights. The adults headed
to meet our friends at an unknown but agreed destination,
which turned out to be a karaoke bar. What a night!
Tuesday 21st August
We met the kids after their first night homestay and visited
the planetarium and Tottori Castle Ruin Park. We walked up
many steps to a lookout where the then governor had a castle
over looking Yonago. Little remains of the castle now but the
view was fantastic.
Back to the hotel and the kids were off for their second night
of home stay while the adults went for a walk and found a
small traditional restaurant for dinner and just let Kei order for
us all. What a great feed and so inexpensive!
Wednesday 22nd August
Met the kids at 8am and headed off to the beach for the Life
Saving Seminar. This was the big day and what we were
there for. Once at the beach we all pitched in and help set
up. After some formalities and many greetings we got down
to business. The large group of Kaike members and our team
were split up into three groups, one for competition coaching,
one for lifesaving skills and one for beach events. There are
some very talented members in Kaike club that would easily
hold their own here!
Everyone on our team helped out on the day and the seminar
was a great success. After the serious part of the day we
enjoyed lunch and had fun in the water being towed. We
finished up and exchanged more gifts and all pitched in and
packed up. As our bus departed we left a huge farewell from
everyone behind, it was quite a moving experience.
Our accommodation that night was at Kikunoya Hotel which
was owned by a friend of Nojima. We had a short time to relax
and have a beautiful hot springs bath before our traditional
dinner where President Stu made our presentation to President
Nojima. The entrance to the hotel, the dining room and inside
the dining room all had banners or posters welcoming the
Surfers Paradise Surf Club and we felt very welcome.
Thursday 23rd August
We headed for Yonago Bus Station and everyone was there
to see us off. There were plenty of photos then we boarded
the bus for an emotional farewell as this was the last time we
would be seeing them.
The bus trip to Osaka took 3 ½ hours and we had to catch
a train from the bus depot to where we were going to be
staying at the Royal Pines Hotel for the next two nights.
Friday 24th August
All to Universal Studios except for Norm who chose to catch
the bullet train to Hiroshima. Universal Studios is an amazing
place with its own train station and the walk to the studios
was just as impressive as Universal itself. That evening
we had dinner at a local Japanese restaurant. Kei did the
ordering for us and we had a great feed, a few drinks, lots
of laughs and reminiscing went on throughout the night.
Saturday 25th August
Osaka to Singapore. Dinner and shopping.
Sunday 26th August
We caught the bus into the city to have a look around and
do some shopping for Play Stations, Nintendo’s, cameras,
mobile phones, etc. After shopping we headed to Sentosa
Island, lunch and more shopping. Some of us made the
journey over to the Island on the massive chair (cabin?) lift.
The view was fantastic. We had a look around the island,
held massive snakes, cooled our feet in a fountain and
made the return trip back on the lift.
fantastic trip and was invaluable for the relationship with
our sister club Kaike and for the experience the juniors
had. The hospitality shown to us by our Japanese friends
was second to none. We can only hope to reciprocate to
the same level when they visit. To Nojima, Mori and all
the members and their friends - thank you very much. Also,
special thanks to Chinatsu Chapman for helping get us
organised.

We arrived back at the hotel earlier than expected and
decided to catch maxi taxis to the airport rather than wait
for two hours in the foyer. After a few small dramas with
Scott’s monkey and Stu’s larger that 100ml fluid containers,
we were in the airport proper ready for our flight back to
Oz. Some went to do some last minute shopping, some had
a massage, the kids were playing with their new toys and
some decided to spend their last few Singapore dollars.

By the time we were on the plane it was late and we were
all pretty weary and settled back for some sleep.

Congratulations…
Peter Anderson was awarded Lifesaver of the Year, Scott
Andrews was awarded Trainer of the Year and Finley Taylor
Open Male Champion Lifesaver at the Branch Annual Dinner
last July.
Our Club won the Gold Coast Magazine’s People’s Choice
Restaurant Award for Best Surf Club in October.
Shane Laker was one of 20 Presidents or Vice Presidents
from around Australia selected to attend the inaugural SLSA
Leaders Conference in Sydney last November.
Cameron Bain was one of 28 young leaders from around
Australia selected to attend the SLSA Leadership
Development Conference in Sydney in January.
Madeline Zantiotis and Jarrod Walsh were selected to
represent the Club at the Pelerman State Youth Excellence
Program in May.
David Clarke and Mitchell Lewis were recipients of the
Commendation for Individual Excellence in Lifesaving at the
2008 SLSQ Awards of Excellence.
The new look team did a great job to make the semis but
could go no further competing against some red hot “B”
grade teams boasting many Aust. and State rep players.
Russell Whitmore (Burleigh) and I were the old brigade
whilst there were three keen and fit youngsters around the
15 years young mark. Rounding the team off were a couple
of 20 year youngs and two very keen females.
A couple of Nippers and their parents are eager to have a
go next season in September, and any other players, male or
female are very welcome to come along.
The 30 year anniversary of Gold Coast Water Polo was held
at North Burleigh SLSC and it was a great night with old
members coming from far and wide. Surfers Slugs were the
inaugural winners of the “A” Grade comp in the grand finals
in 1978. Three of those original members were there to
celebrate – David Orchard, Jon Neilsen and myself.
Long live the SLUGS! Trivia info - In the 80’s and 90’s Surfers
Paradise SLSC had another unofficial SLUG pastime with
many of the members, both seniors and juniors, doing a
Sunday trip to Cook Island to indulge in a spot of spearfishing
and having fun with the Wobbeygongs, the Blowhole
and the sharp barnacles all along the front of the island.
Unfortunately Cook Island now is off limits. SLUG stood for
Surfers Lifesavers Underwater Group.

Thomas Mee
Tommy or “Jimpy”, as he was affectionately known, joined
the Club from West End in 1939. He received his Bronze
Medallion in the same year and after serving his country
in World War 2 doing Corvette Duty, went on to become a
very valuable member of the Club. During his time with the
Club he was a long-term Vice-Captain and Gear Steward.
He held the position of Deputy President to Charlie Walsh
from 1958-1960 and was an elected Vice President from
1961-1965. He was elected a Life Member of the Club in
1963. After retirement Tommy moved to the Gold Coast
and lived on Chevron Is. He was a very regular visitor and
supporter of the Club and was well liked by all who knew
him. Tommy passed away 9th August 2007 aged 86 years.
He will be sadly missed by all his old friends.
Sophie
Robertson
Nipper member Sophie
passed away 9th April
2008 after being ill
for some time. Our
thoughts go to her
family Leanne, Clara,
Stacey and Luke. Sophie
was highly regarded
amongst members who
were in awe of her
commitment. May she
rest in peace.
Barry Galton
On 29th February 2008, Barry Galton, the chronicler of
the sporting history of Surf Life Saving competition in
Australia, passed away. Surf Life Saving lost a great
supporter and the community has lost the expertise and
insight of a wonderful journalist and author. Barry was
the author of the three definitive books on the history of
Surf Sports in Australia; “Gladiators of The Surf”, “Gold
Silver Bronze” and his final one “Gold Silver Bronze at
The Aussies” to celebrate 100 years of Australian Surf
Life Saving. His contribution to the raised profile of Surf
Life Saving will stand as testament to this humble and
respected man who was a giant among his peers. Thanks
for the memories.

Financial Report 2008
NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
f. Economic Dependence
Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc is dependent on the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Supporters Club
Inc for funds used to meet it's financial commitments. At the date of this report the committee of management has
no reason to believe the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Supporters Club Inc will not continue to support Surfers
Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc.
g. Property, Plant and Equipment
Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair values less, where applicable, accumulated
depreciation and impairment losses.
Plant and equipment
Plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis less depreciation and impairment losses.
The carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually by directors to ensure it is not in excess of the
recoverable amount from these assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net
cash flows that will be received from the assets employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash
flows have been discounted to their present values in determining recoverable amounts.
NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
The financial report is a general purpose financial report that has been prepared in accordance with Australian
Accounting Standards and Interpretations made by the Australian Accounting Standards Board, and the
requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 1981, Queensland. Because the company is a not-for-profit
entity, some requirements of Australian Accounting Standards differ from International Financial Reporting
Standards and in those respects this report does not apply those international accounting standards.
The financial report is for Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc as an individual entity, incorporated and
domiciled in Australia. Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc is an association incorporated in Queensland
under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981.
The following is a summary of the material accounting policies adopted by the entity in the preparation of the
financial report. The accounting policies have been consistently applied, unless otherwise stated.
Basis of Preparation
Reporting Basis and Conventions
The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs. It does not take into
account changing money values or, except where stated, current valuations of non current assets. Cost is based
on the fair values of the consideration given in exchange for assets.
e. Critical accounting estimates and judgments
The committee of management evaluate estimates and judgments in the financial report based on historical
knowledge and best available information. Estimates assume a reasonable expectation of future events and are
based on current trends and economic data, obtained both externally and within the entity.
h. Comparative figures
When required by Accounting Standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform with changes in
presentation for the current financial year.
Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains or
losses are included in the income statement. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation
reserve relating to that asset are transferred to retained earnings.
An asset’s carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset’s carrying amount is
greater than its estimated recoverable amount.
All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).
d. Inventories
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and current replacement cost. Inventories acquired at no cost, or for
nominal consideration are valued at the current replacement cost as at the date of acquisition.
The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at each balance sheet date.
Depreciation
The depreciable amount of all fixed assets including building and capitalised lease assets, but excluding freehold
land, is depreciated on a straight line basis over their useful lives to the entity commencing from the time the asset
is held ready for use. Leasehold improvements are depreciated over the shorter of either the unexpired period of
the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements. The depreciation rates used for each class of
depreciable assets are:
Depreciation Rate
Class of Fixed Asset
Leasehold Improvements
8.33% (2007: 2.5%)
Senior Club Plant & Equipment
20.0%
Senior Club Motor Vehicles
20.0% - 33.0%
Junior Club Plant & Equipment
20.0%
Revenue from the rendering of a service is recognised upon the delivery of the service to the customers.
Interest revenue and distribution income from investments is recognised on a proportional basis taking into
account the interest rates applicable to the financial assets.
Donations and bequests are recognised as revenue when received unless they are designated for a specific
purpose, where they are carried forward as prepaid income on the balance sheet.
Grant revenue is recognised in the income statement when it is controlled. When there are conditions attached to
grant revenue relating to the use of those grants for specific purposes it is recognised in the balance sheet as a
liability until such conditions are met or services provided.
c. Revenue
Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised upon the delivery of goods to customers.
b. Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks, other short-term highly liquid
investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts.
Revaluations
Increases in the carrying amount arising on revaluation of property, plant and equipment are credited to a
revaluation reserve in members’ equity. Decreases that offset previous increases of the same asset are charged
against fair value reserves directly in equity; all other decreases are charged to the income statement. Each year
the difference between depreciation based on the revalued carrying amount of the asset charged to the income
statement and depreciation based on the asset’s original cost is transferred from the revaluation reserve to
retained earnings.
Plant and equipment that have been contributed at no cost, or for nominal cost are valued at the fair value of the
asset at the date it is acquired.

a. Income Tax
No provision for income tax has been raised as the entity is exempt from income tax under Section 50-45 of the

n. Contributions
Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc receives non-reciprocal contributions from the government or other
parties for nothing or a nominal value. These contributions are recognised at the fair value on the date of
acquisition upon which time an asset is taken up in the Balance Sheet and revenue in the Income Statement
Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an assets class, the entity estimates the
recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which the class of assets belong.
Where the future economic benefits of the asset are not primarily dependent upon on the assets ability to generate
net cash inflows and when the entity would, if deprived of the asset, replace its remaining future economic
benefits, value in use is depreciated replacement cost of an asset.
m. Impairment of Assets
At each reporting date, the entity reviews the carrying values of its tangible and intangible assets to determine
whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, the recoverable
amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use, is compared to
the asset’s carrying value. Any excess of the asset’s carrying value over its recoverable amount is expensed to the
Income Statement.
l. Financial Instruments
Financial instruments are initially measured at cost on trade date, which includes transaction costs, when the
related contractual rights or obligations exist. Subsequent to initial recognition these instruments are measured as
set out below.
Loans and receivables
Loans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not
quoted in an active market and are stated at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method.
Financial liabilities
Non-derivative financial liabilities are recognised at amortised cost, comprising original debt less principal
payments and amortisation.
k. Leases
Lease payments for operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are
charged as expenses in the period in which they are incurred.
Cash flows are presented in the Cash Flow Statement on a gross basis, except for the GST component of
investing and financing activities, which are disclosed as operating cash flows.
j. Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST
incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office. In these circumstances, the GST is recognised as
part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the
balance sheet are shown inclusive of GST.
Contributions are made by the entity to an employee superannuation fund and are charged as expenses when
incurred.

In conducting our audit, we have complied with the independence requirements of Australian

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We
conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards

The committee of the association is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the
