Summer 2014
The Saint
From the Principal’s Office
Dear Parents
We are now at the end of our first year. I’m so proud of all of the scholars and
staff for such a successful inaugural year. We really are a family. In September we
welcome 120 new members to our family, and I know all of our current scholars
will be fantastic role models for them.
We have had a lot of incredible enrichment opportunities over the last two terms,
and we are already planning a lot for next year! Our showcase event was the ARK
Schools Music Gala, which you can read about in the centre pages of this newsletter, where our choir was lucky enough to perform in front of over 2000 invited
guests at the Barbican. We have also performed in front of other ARK schools at
the ARK Poetry Slam. In both of these events we had the youngest team out of all
the ARK secondary schools, and our scholars have done us proud. We have been
able to stand as equals amongst the other academies in our chain.
Our final assessments went well, and you should now have your child’s final report.
I wish you a wonderful and relaxing summer, and I look forward to seeing you all
in September.

Sports Day 2014
On Wednesday 9th July 2014, we had our first ever Academy Sports Day. We were lucky enough to be able to use
another Church of England school’s playing fields for the
event, and we had absolutely perfect weather (despite Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of that week being complete washouts). The whole school got coaches to the fields,
and after sitting down in our houses and settling in, the
sports began.
Every scholar took part in some capacity, whether that was
competing or helping with the time keeping.
With this being our first year, we set all of our Academy
records for the first time, and now have something to aim for
in future years.
Hawa Olabanji races across the
finish line into first place in the
200m run
Raheem James and Natasha Nelson were early favourites to
win the running races, and they didn’t disappoint, with some incredibly fast running creating records that will be tough for future Year 7s
to beat.
Team Ramabai gets ready for the Staff-Scholar Relay
We would like to thank St Saviour’s and St
Olave’s school for kindly allowing us to use their playing fields for Sports Day; we hope
to be back for many years to come!
On Friday 11th June 2014, we had an extended Shout Out assembly, where we gave out
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, as well as awarding both the Participation Cup and the
Sports Cup.
The house with the most wins on the day was Barnardo, who were awarded the Sports
Cup. Tutu won the Participation Cup for being awarded the most non-sporting house points on the day.

tour
After much
The 11 scholars who entered the competition wrote such strong letters that we wanted to reward
their hard work and effort. On Thursday 17th July they were taken out to lunch in central London and then on to the Churchill War Rooms, an underground museum that was once the
home and cabinet office of Winston Churchill and his government during WWII. Scholars saw

that the winners of the Battlefield
Trip competition are Mert Tok and
Niyasia Owens-Watts. Mert and
Niyasia will represent AASA on a 4
day trip to the battlefields of northern France in September. The tour
is part of a national centenary commemoration and will include students from secondary schools all
across England. Mert and Niyasia
will take part in workshops, discussions, memorial services and tours.
Music at ARK All Saints Academy
On Thursday 17th July, the 31 scholars that performed in the ARK Annual Music Gala at the Barbican (see next page) were invited to perform at the
ARK Teacher training graduation ceremony, held at
our very own academy. The scholars were asked to
close the event and performed their solo item from
the Gala – Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth’s
“Skyfall”. The scholars thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to perform again in front of another appreciative audience and their performance was well received by all in attendance.
On Friday 18th July, the 31 scholars that performed
in the ARK Annual Music Gala at the Barbican were
involved in performing for a final time this term as
part of the ARK All Saints end of year service. The
service was held in the Church and included the item
the scholars sang at the Gala plus the hymn
“Morning has broken” and a rendition of the school
song “Oh When the Saints”. The choir led the congregation in the group singing and performed their
solo item excellently.

DevArt trip
On Tuesday 15th July, 30 scholars travelled to the Barbican to experience a workshop
called ‘DevArt Young Creators’ which was run in association with Google and the Barbican. The workshop was aimed at inspiring young computer scientists to understand how to
use computer coding to create art. During the workshop, scholars were shown an installation which used code to turn spoken wishes into digitally coded butterflies which would
then remain as part of the installation. The scholars were then treated to an opportunity to
create and develop code for their own butterflies where they could change the colour, wing
pattern, flutter speed, size and visual angle of the butterflies on their own computers. On
hand to help with this were a team of knowledgeable Google young engineers and the
scholars were all thoroughly engrossed learning
about the different possibilities of coding. At the
end of the workshop, the scholars were given free
USB bracelets on which to save their butterfly designs as a gift from Google.
The scholars also received a tour of the current
‘Digital Revolution’ exhibition where they were able
to witness different types of technology throughout
the ages. These included a ‘Will.I.Am’ room which
showcased a digitally produced image of the popular singer Will.I.Am, an installation involving different birds and an opportunity to play different video
games from throughout the years. The scholars all
thoroughly enjoyed themselves and certainly returned to school full of inspiration for their future
Computer Science lessons.
ARK Music Gala 2014
Preparation for this event began in January with 31 All Saints scholars
attending regular weekly rehearsals. The song, chosen by Miss Atalar,
was agreed with scholars and work began to prepare the well-known
theme song “Skyfall” written by
Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth.
After many after-school rehearsals, the scholars eventually took
part in a Saturday rehearsal on
14th June, co-led by Miss Atalar
and Bryan Welton (Director of
Music at ARK schools). The Saturday rehearsal was a huge success, particularly as the scholars
were joined for the first time by
their Walworth accompanists to
have a final run through before the day drew to a close.
This then led to two performances, one at ARK All Saints Academy
and one at Walworth Academy’s Summer Concert. The All Saints
performance took place as part of a musical showcase within the
school on Wednesday 18th June. The choir then went on to perform
at Walworth Academy’s Summer concert to an audience of around
100 people on 26th June 2014. Both performances were fantastic and
were an excellent warm-up before the main event.
Finally July 7th came around and it was off to the Barbican at Midday
for a technical rehearsal slot and then a quick rehearsal with the huge
massed choir, made up of all other performing pupils from other ARK
schools. The technical rehearsal went without a hitch and six of our scholars were
chosen to be flag bearers for the opening
procession. All Saints were lucky enough to
have (arguably) the best costumes of the
evening, tuxedo T-shirts in the style of
James Bond, which looked fantastic up on
the huge Barbican stage.
Throughout the day, the scholars did themselves proud, behaving beautifully and
showing
enthusiastic support to other academies who
were also performing on the day. At
7pm the show began and after a long
and nervous wait, All Saints were
finally called to perform at around
8:30pm (the closing act!). The scholars performed like professional musicians, following Miss Atalar’s cues
“Our first ARK gala was an amazing experience. We are already looking forward to
next year!” – Junior
eagerly and singing their
hearts out. Special mention must go to Paris
Allen who sang the closing solo so beautifully
that it moved members of
the audience to tears.
The performance ended
to a huge round of applause and the scholars
took a well-deserved bow.
The All Saints scholars
then joined all of the other
students from various ARK
schools for a final massedchoir number “Happy” by
Pharrell Williams. The All
Saints pupils had learnt the choreography to this item just hours before but, ever the professionals, they
executed the moves brilliantly.
The whole occasion was fantastic and the scholars all commented on how incredible it was to have been
part of such an auspicious event. It was a wonderful way to make our musical debut as one of the newest
ARK schools and the Music Department is extremely grateful to Bryan Welton, Jennifer Raven, staff at
Walworth Academy and the parents of all of the All Saints scholars for making such an outstanding performance possible. Here’s looking to next year!
On Monday 7th July, 31
scholars from ARK All
Saints Academy travelled to
the Barbican to perform as
part of the Annual ARK
Schools Music Gala event.
This event is open to all
schools in the ARK network
which is made up of 27 Primary and Secondary schools.
The idea behind the Gala is
that it is a chance to celebrate music from across the
network. It’s an opportunity
for students of all ages and
abilities to perform on stage
in front of a select audience
of parents, teachers and invited guests. In light of this
fact, All Saints were lucky
enough to secure a soughtafter slot in the performance
schedule, being supported
by a band from a fellow
ARK school, Walworth
Academy.
The Tempest
On Tuesday 17th June 2014,
all of Year 7 saw a performance of The Tempest, which
they have been studying in
English, by the Globe Players
in the Commons. This was to
help them get a better understanding of the text; Shakespeare plays were written to be
performed, so this really
helped boost their understanding of key parts of the text.
ARK Poetry Slam
Paris Allen, Patrick Lameed and Brenda
Bernardo took part in the first ARK Poetry Slam at the prestigious Roundhouse in
Camden and were a credit to the Academy. These talented and dedicated scholars had been developing their craft at
workshops and in their own time in preparation for the final competition on 15th
July. They wrote about their identities in a
very profound and moving way, using a
range of advanced poetic techniques, and
they used words a lot of adults hadn’t even
heard of! The judges were so impressed
with Paris’s poem that she won first prize
in the freestyle category – well done, Paris! The performance of the group poem
was also very impressive as the scholars
worked so well as a team to make it lively
and entertaining.
I was very proud to witness such stunning
performances, and I am sure that Paris,
Patrick and Brenda have inspired our year
7 and 8 scholars to take part in an even
more successful poetry slam next year.

COLA Maths Challenge
On Friday the 11th July, four scholars attended the Annual
problem solving Maths competition Maths competition at
The City of London Academy. The challenge was to gain as
many points as possible across five rounds of Maths questions. Working under a time limit, teams had to work together to complete questions on problem solving, Numbers,
Algebra, Shape Space and Measure and Data Handling. In
the last round, students completed a timed task and subsequently presented their work to other contestants. Six teams
participated in the competition. Although our team was at a
slight disadvantage because our team consisted of only year
7 scholars we but did incredibly well against teams of year
7,8 & 9 students. Although we came fourth, our scholars
found it a very educational experience.
“I really enjoyed putting my maths skills to the test against other ARK schools, and
hope we can come back and improve on our position next year!”
Vauxhall City Farm trip
On Wednesday 21st May 2014, Ms Whitewick, Mr
Darteh and tutor group AT11 took a visit to Vauxhall
City farm. We all travelled on the bus and had a short
walk through Vauxhall park to the farm. We were all very
excited to see the animals, especially to see if there would
be any Spring time babies.
At the farm we saw lots of different animals including
horses, sheep, lambs, pigs, ducks, a Shetland pony, a very
ugly turkey and two boisterous goats! We all really enjoyed our visit and would love to go back.
Abeer said ‘I loved the ducks, especially the white ducks’
Sheldon liked the pigs and Toki liked the pony the most.
Ms Whitewick and Mr Darteh loved the giant rabbits and
we all wished we could take them home.
Bus Project trips
On Wednesday 14th May 2014, Ms
Loveday, Ms Whitewick and Miss Bertrand took a group of scholars on an
Independent Bus Project Trip. We also
took another group of scholars on
Wednesday 4th June 2014.
The trip was organised by Southwark
Council in conjunction with Transport
for London, the police and trained mentors to act out the scenarios.
On the trip the scholars where presented
with various scenarios which were acted
out by trained police officers and were
asked what they would do in that situation.
Bus Inspectors came on the bus and
explained to the scholars how important
it is to have a Zip Card
and good behaviour on
the bus. Especially if you
want to keep your card
until you finish school.
The scholars were also
shown how important it
is to cross the road safely,
how to keep yourself safe
at the bus stop and how
to read the timings of the bus.
The scholars enjoyed the acting by the
mentors and police officers and gained
new knowledge in how to help them
keep safe when travelling on the bus and
waiting for a bus at the bus stop.
On both days the weather was wonderful,
so we decided that we would walk
through Burgess Park and have a picnic,
then make our way to the Independent
Bus Project Trip.
As the both of the trips were successful,
we will be looking to take out a group of
year 7 scholars next academic year.
MyBnk
Workshops
On Tuesday 20th May 2014, all
scholars took part in a morning of
Financial Literacy Workshops run
by MyBnk. These were designed to
equip our scholars with real life
money skills and knowledge that
will help them both now and in
future. The scholars loved it and
learnt a lot, and even the teachers
were learning things they didn’t
know before!
Ask your child what the six security
features on a bank note are; you
might be surprised!
Southwark Primary/Secondary
Collaborative Project
This July nearly 200 Year 5 pupils
have been to the Academy to attend a Science session on Elements. The pupils were allowed to
use the bunsen burners;
work with acids and also
hold fire in their hands –
looks more dramatic
than it really is. The pupils also went to St Saviour’s and St Olave’s for
the Art part of the project. The project ended
with a celebration of all
the schools together in
our Sports Hall. The
Department really enjoyed the
project and they are sure that they
met future Scientists.
Scholar Voice
Our inaugural group of Scholar Voice representatives have worked
hard this year to establish their role within the new school. Since
January they have met every Tuesday morning from 7.50am8.20am. A core group of 8 have remained dedicated throughout
this year and will continue into at least the first term of next year:
Jaydon, Rasheed, Paris, Patrick, Luca, Andreas, Johana and
Fatiah. They have met and impressed three distinguished visitors:
Harriet Harman, Peter Martin, and Michael Farmer.
They have sought the opinion of scholars to redesign
the passport for next year, found out where scholars
feel unsafe outside of school and what AASA can do
to help. They have also created questionnaires to
find out what scholars enjoy about the school menu
and suggestions for the future of the academy. Next
year they are looking forward to meeting the new
Year 7 cohort and increasing the Scholar Voice
body.
Welcome to our new scholars!
