From the Editor’s Desk
Dear Scholars,
Recently, on my
flight back from
London to Kuala Lumpur, I
was seated next
to a lady. She
was wearing a
blue polo-shirt
which had writing “A380 – A Pleasant Journey With Us” and a big logo
of Malaysia Airlines at the back. Instantly, I thought that she could be
one of the airline’s staff. I noticed
that she wore the shirt with much
pride and gratification.
Soon after the plane took-off, she
realized that her seat was experiencing some technical problems i.e. the
media player was not working at all.
To travel close to 13 hours without
having the access to media for music,
movie and games could be very
daunting, hence her call to one of
the flight attendants for assistance
i.e. to get the media fixed, to change
seat or any possible option. I couldn’t
help to hear their conversation. The
lady passenger was obviously concerned of her situation and hoping
for a fast solution. Her plight was not
fulfilled as it was a full flight and
they couldn’t change her seat or fix
the media player. From the tone of
her voice, I could sense that she was
extremely upset. As the exchanges
unfolded, I could not help but notice
how professional the crews were in
handling the situation – they were
polite, composed and genuinely emphatic in their communication. They
listened, they looked into her eyes
and even knelt down beside her to
explain and to comfort her.
Minutes passed, the crews left and
the lady passenger looking calmer
than before, reclined into her seat,
reached out to the in-Flight Shopping booklet, flipped through the
pages and made her purchase out of
the little compensation she got from
the airline for her malfunction seat.
She even told me that she had to fork
out twice of the amount received to
buy a nice dainty bracelet. Now,
that’s what I thought of as an excellent example of the ability to communicate and influence!!!
In this issue, we will be talking more
on the same topic of ‘Communicate
& Influence’ as it is also one of the
competencies in our YK Leadership
Model. It may sound rather trifling
here to talk on topic which is so general in nature but the ability to do
that is indeed very fundamental and
important. Having such skills would
definitely go a long way. It works,
every time.
To all our Hindu scholars, we wish
you a Happy Deepavali and to our
Form 5 scholars @ KYS, we wish you
good luck and all the best!!!

The Power of Communication
Words

Mastering the power of communication is an
important skill that must be recognised and
enriched by leaders. After all, the pen is
mightier than the sword. To humans, words are more than just a mean
of interaction. They can shape our belief, feelings, behaviors and ultimately, action. Actions may protect and coerce us, but words can
change opinions. Communication is not about what you say, but rather
what people hear. Communication is a two-way process in which
there is an exchange of thoughts, opinions or information towards a
mutually accepted outcome. Therefore, communication is the most
effective way to influence others towards achieving a better hope for
the future.
In my personal opinion, communication is the key to influence others.
Earlier this year, I had the chance to become the Project Manager for
KYS’ annual housecamp. It would not have been a success if I did not
receive cooperation from the others. In order to achieve such teamwork, I had to communicate with the others clearly and had to make
sure they were up for the task. If they weren’t, then I had to encouraged them to do it. If I had forced others to do their task involuntarily,
it would be a failure. Thus, I had to influence them into doing the tasks
given willingly. In order to do so, I made it clear that this was not my
project alone but it was our project altogether. At last, I was given full
assistance from everyone and it turned out to be a great experience.
Communication had always been important, especially for leaders.
Good communication leads to worthy impact. For example, a successful business man has to know how to communicate not only with his
customers but also his employees. This is to ensure the quality of product or service is constantly mounting. Communication plays a crucial
part in altering an individual’s attitude. That is why it is so important
to be great in communication. Not only can you change your selfconcept, but also others.
Sometimes, a quote that is barely ten-word
long may have the ability to leave you pondering for a long time. This reflects the power of words. Words can hurt,
words can heal. Words can give you strength but can also take it away.
Words influence people.
A fine line always exists between a desired and an undesired result. A
wrong word choice may come out as contemptuous but a better word
choice may be considered as persuasive. Words with similar meaning
may differ greatly when used in different contexts.
One has to understand the message one wants to convey and also the
meaning of the words of choice along with the tones and connotations
they may bring. The choice of words together with the way these words
are strung together impacts largely on the message one is trying to convey.
One has to take great care of one’s intonation and volume. One has to be
sure, to a certain degree, that the person one is communicating with will
be able to take it the way one intend to mean. More often than not, these
considerations are to be made within seconds.
To wrap this up, a proverb popularized through William Shakespeare’s
Hamlet:
“Brevity is the soul of wit.”

Besides that, communication is also the key to success. Communication
has the power to influence your thinking about yourself and others. To
become a potentially good leader, you must be good at communicating
with people because you are the one that must calm things down
when everything is on fire. Even if things are at its worst situation, you
have to ensure people’s mind are remained positive and you must impact their mindset and yours too.
By Qamarina Azman
In a nutshell, an individual with excellent communication skills is an
asset to every organisation. No matter what career you plan to pursue,
learning to express yourself professionally in speech and in writing
will help you get there. The first step in being good at communication
is by owning confidence. If you don’t have it, then fake it until you
actually gain it. To hold the future is to influence through communication. Ideas may be greater than people, but expressing an idea to
people is the best.

AOTrauma Course-Advanced Principles of
Fracture Management was held from 7th until 9th October, 2015 at
Eastin Hotel, Petaling Jaya.
The advance course comprised of two parts:
Firstly, there were lecture series from International and local senior
orthopaedic specialists about the latest classification, treatment, surgical approaches, and implant use in orthopaedic especially about fractures and trauma cases.
Second part was practical skill training
session, during which I was able to simulate the actual situation in terms of
examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and importantly operating on artificial bone.
Additionally, there were group discussions between seniors and juniors to
give an avenue in which case scenario
was discussed. Through that, I learned
details of case management and various
options of treatments and choices of
operative approaches and implants to
use. This will contribute immensely to
the improvement of the services offered
to our patients.

ABSRC 2015 Rome is an important international conference of business
and business-related science scholars and educators. Organised by GEA
College – Faculty of Entrepreneurship in Slovenia, this year’s ABSRC
took place in Rome, Italy, gathering academicians and researchers from
23 countries to engage in a three-day academic conference with extensive topic areas ranging from Business Strategy, Organisational Development, Human Resource and Career Development, Macroeconomics,
Management and Consulting, Managerial and Organizational Cognition
and Psychology, Marketing and Consumer Behavior, Management Education and Training and Development, and many others. Invited by the
committee to submit business-related academic paper, I had successfully presented a paper entitled “Factors Predicting Consumer Behavior
towards Fast Fashion”.
I presented my paper on the second day of the conference. It was surprising that all presenters for the entire event were professors and lecturers, and I was the only student presenter. The diversity of issues and
the uniqueness of research topics discussed at the conference were one
of the reasons I believe this biannual programme is highly acclaimed.
Not only that each scholar
came with unique businessrelated issues in their country
and presented them in an
impactful style, everybody
was able to create lively and
dynamic discussions in responding to the issues presented. The overall idea exchange and knowledge transfer was organised very well
by the committee, so people from different backgrounds were able to
speak what’s on their mind from their respective approach.
The issue I presented was focusing on Malaysian market. Scholars from
other countries saw the behavior of Malaysian fast fashion consumers as
unique and worth discussing. For instance, Malaysian consumers pay
attention to what people around them say when they make purchase
decisions; I have observed that many people send pictures to WhatsApp
groups and ask other people’s opinion on which fashion product they
should buy, such as: “The blue or the red shoes?”, “This sweater by H&M
or by Zara?”, “Should I buy the bag in
picture A or picture B?”. Apparently,
This behavior surprised scholars from
countries like European countries and
America as this is less or not likely to
be found in their country. Also, research findings showing that Malaysians with monthly income of RM2,000
to RM2,500 are able to purchase a
RM300 fast fashion product, was another surprise to them because they
considered it as an inadvisable buying
behavior.

As a presenter, I felt appreciated that my paper, which focused on
marketing and behavioral economics, received positive responses from
the audience, especially when other scholars responded with their
different perspective, such as finance and macroeconomics. In order to
fully maximize the opportunity, I also took active participation during
the discussions of other topics, enhancing my insight by asking questions and sharing past research findings I have studied. The overall
program was very satisfactory. I am also glad that I received support
from YK, particularly before I departed. This experience will open
more opportunities in the future and I do advice other YK scholars to
also engage in such programme, in order to get an international exposure that will surely benefit them in the future.
Khazanah called me up to ask if I would like to consider a position
in Yayasan Khazanah. And the rest is history ….. 
Q: What do you find most interesting and rewarding since becoming the Head of Corporate Services in YK?
A: The most rewarding is to have the opportunity to engaged with the

peak of their potential during their study life and thereafter. Especially when you see the positive changes in the scholars and how
they matured over the years. It’s a humbling experience during
the selection interview to listen to the achievements and things the
candidates do at that young age – comparing to what I’ve achieved
