THE HADLEY WAY
Sixth Form Lord Rosser visit
On the 28th of January, Oasis Academy Hadley had a special visit
from Lord Rosser, Defence Spokesperson in the House of Lords.
Lord Rosser visited to speak to the A level Government and Politics
students to help them gain some insight into his work in politics and
career in the House of Lords.
Lord Rosser spoke about a number of issues, including Defence, the
Economy, the European Union and the Environment. There was even
an opportunity for the students to ask questions relating to a variety of
political issues, both domestically and globally. It was an eventful
morning and a great opportunity for the students to gain a professional
perspective on the political climate here in the UK and abroad.
Richard Rosser is Labour’s
Defence spokesperson in the
House of Lords and also
speaks from the front bench on
Home Affairs and Transport
matters. Richard joined the
Lords as a life Peer in 2004.
Richard has a long and
distinguished career in the
trade union movement, working
to represent the interests of
workers in the transport sector.
He began his career at London
Transport where he joined the
transport union (the Transport
Salaried Staffs Association
(TSSA)). In this union, he
proved himself as a persuasive
and highly adept negotiator
and in 1989 was elected
General Secretary of the TSSA.
Richard remained General
Secretary for 15 years before
joining the House of Lords.
Richard has a strong sense of
community service and is an
active magistrate in his local
community. He was a
non-executive director on the
Prison and Probation Service
Management Board
(2000-2009) and chairman of
the Audit Committee
(2004-2009).
Richard is an enthusiastic
football follower and has spent
years collecting programmes
from football matches all over
the country. Since 2009 he
has been an Honorary
Vice-President of the Ryman
Isthmian Football League.
Richard keeps his colleagues
on their toes with his sharp and
dry sense of humour.

Day 10 Trip
Wembley Trip
Wembley stadium is an historic sporting venue
and home to the English football association. The
year 8s visited the stadium on day 10 and were
taken on a behind the scenes tour. They were able
to see the players’ changing rooms, the
physiotherapy facilities, where the Queen and
other VIPs have their pre match lunch and the
royal box where they watch the match from.
The students had the opportunity to walk up the
steps to lift the most famous cup in world club
football: the FA cup. They also got to sit it in the
seats where the England manager Roy Hodgson
gets interviewed by the world’s Media.
On the 10th January 2014, Year 7 at
Oasis Academy Hadley used
independent enquiry skills to
develop their understanding of
African patterns and Kente cloth to
create a background. The students
worked as a team to create colourful
pieces of artwork based on the
Kente cloth and Matisse’s collage.
The students really revelled in lining
up in their classes and walking down
the Wembley tunnel and out on to
the pitch.
The Year 7 students were
challenged to work in groups to
create a paper weave inspired
by the Kente cloth using at
least three colours to
complete the background.
They completed the Kente
and Matisse piece by cutting
out and adding their
selected images to emulate
Matisse’s work, on top of their Kente backgrounds.
During this challenge, they learnt that the colours of
the Kente cloth symbolised different things and that
they all have different meanings.
They also discovered that every
pattern in the Kente cloths told
its own story through the colours
used, the pattern woven and
the symbols, and that they
were both traditional cloths as
well as contemporary ones.
The Year 7s worked really hard on Friday Day 10,
and created some beautiful work. They used their
PLTs skills to manage their time, plan and practise
working as a team successfully. Well done!

Once again the year 8s had a great
time visiting the most famous
football venue in the world.
Phase 1:
Chatty Readers
Come and join us every morning at 8.30am for our
new group called Chatty Readers. This group is an
opportunity for you and your child to come into the
Academy and read with a member of staff. We have
already begun building a large collection of dual
language books and so you will
have the opportunity to read in
English or in your Home Language.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to improve your
child’s reading skills, which is ever so important in
their development at
this stage. For more
information, please
see the members of
staff in Phase 1.

Staying Safe
As the nights and mornings
are darker now, here is
some advice for students
on staying safe.
Stick to routes that are busy
and well-lit, avoid alleyways,
subways and isolated car
parks.
Consider carrying a personal
safety alarm.
Avoid wearing earphones or
chatting / texting on your
phone whilst out and about,
this could distract you and
prevent you from hearing
danger approaching.
If you see potential danger,
take action immediately. Head
for a safe place such as a shop
/ friend’s house or anywhere
there are other people.
WW1:
100yearanniversary
In I-global we have just
finished studying World War
One. We learned all about
how the assassination of an
Austrian Prince helped to
start the war, how British
soldiers coped by living in
the trenches, some of the
key battles of the war and
how the war ended.
We discovered lots of
interesting facts such as
rats in the trenches
sometimes growing to the
size of a cat with soldiers
then catching terrible
diseases from them.
One of the areas we
looked at closely was the
way in which propaganda
posters were used to
persuade and pressure
men into joining the
British Army to go and
fight in the war.
Walk facing oncoming traffic to
avoid kerb crawlers. If a vehicle
pulls up alongside you, turn
and move quickly in the other
direction.
The risk of becoming a victim of
crime is generally very low;
however it’s advisable to take a
few precautions when out and about.
PC Gazzard
Safer Schools Officer
At the end of the unit we
carried out an
assessment to show how
much knowledge we had
gained. My assessment
involved designing a World War One museum and
displaying each area of World War One that we studied.
We really enjoyed studying WW1 and felt sad that our
work had come to an end. Since then I have been to
the library to find some books on World War One as I
would like to know more.

New Academy Uniform
We are considering adopting some new items of Academy uniform from
September for the next academic year, following consultation with parents,
carers and students. The proposed changes to the Academy uniform are:
• The introduction of an Oasis Academy Hadley
cardigan. This will be a black cardigan with
Academy logo which can be worn in place of
the current black jumper. Students will still
wear their blazers over a cardigan or jumper.
• In Phase 1, students from Year 3 will wear a
white shirt, blue jumper or cardigan and an
Academy tie instead of the sweat shirt and
polo. The polo and sweat shirt will still be
worn for PE.
• In Nursery children will wear the Academy jogging bottoms and sweatshirts.
If you have a view on these uniform changes please let the Academy know by Monday 24th February.
Options Time!
This half term students from years
8, 9 and 10 have been making
their GCSE options choices. This
is a very important time for all
involved, who have made choices
based on their preferred subjects
and their career aspirations.
The Academy hosted a course
choice open evening on 16th
January which was very well
attended. At the evening, the
different options subjects set up
stalls promoting their subjects
and were on hand to answer any
questions from students, parents
and carers.
Any student who has not yet
handed their options form in, or
would like to ask any further
questions about their options
choices, should speak to Mr
Rowley, the new Deputy Principal
in charge of curriculum.
