While this report covers many of the milestones that might have helped us, and Roslindale Village, make headlines this past year, there were just as many smaller (but equally notable) moments that we all experienced just by being in this community together. I know what mine were: watching children share eggs at the Egg Hunt in Fallon Field—including one parent who scaled a fence to put two eggs into the basket of a crying kid who was convinced that they had missed the whole hunt, laughing with neighbors at the Summer Farmers Market in the MBTA parking lot while we desperately looked for shade, gossiping with beloved business owners about taboo subjects like politics and religion or about neighborhood on-goings, hearing residents say “Oh, I love your e-newsletter—I read the whole thing from top to bottom,” and standing with a business owner in front of his shop as he told me that “it means so much to business owners that RVMS can provide platforms for us to be able to speak to elected officials and raise concerns about our community.” STAFF Ground breakings, ribbon cuttings, grand openings—we’ve got that covered in the pages to follow. If you want more of the regular Roslindale moments like mine above, then join me in this great community and take advantage of all that RVMS and Roslindale Village has to offer. In doing so, you’ll get to know all the community leaders, residents, business owners, neighbors behind the great news in this report who are responsible for making 2014 the year it was. Executive Director: Christina DiLisio So get out there! I promise that you won’t be disappointed. Steve Gag Project Manager: Ben Sommer Project Assistant: Sarah Kugel Project Assistant: Maddie Siebert Share your own regular Roslindale moments on our Facebook page. We’ll be collecting these throughout the year ahead and will print them in next year’s Annual Report for 2015. ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 THE ARCHITECTURE Landmarks are being re-imagined and constructed all around us. Like the Cathedral and Market Square working in tandem in a medieval town, so too do the Substation and Adams Park complement and define each other as the twin centers of our community. ADAMS PARK GRAND OPENING After two years of planning and community meetings, over 3,000 people helped Mayor Walsh to re-open Adams Park to great fanfare on Saturday, October 18th. The new park features a flexible performance space, irrigation, more electrical outlets, more pathways, two new entrances from the street, and new benches. RVMS further contributed by partnering with Roslindale Green & Clean to purchase turf and plants for the park’s new green spaces. With these additions, Adams Park now officially takes its place as the heart of community life, a true village green and a welcoming space for all of Roslindale. SUBSTATION REDEVELOPMENT GROUNDBREAKING The Roslindale Substation project broke ground on Saturday, September 6th, with Mayor Marty Walsh performing the honors alongside our partners at Peregrine Group and Historic Boston, Inc. The redevelopment project, which RVMS has been instrumental in ushering to it’s present stage, will include a restaurant with complementary ground floor retail and 43 units of housing. HENDERSON FOUNDATION GRANT The Roslindale Village Substation has been awarded $40,000 from the George B. Henderson Foundation in order to restore a prominent feature of the building— the windows, including the large ones which face out onto Washington Street. In addition to the restoration of the windows, other restoration work will occur. Masonry will be repointed to match the original mortar in strength, composition, color, and texture. Any broken or cracked bricks will be replaced in-kind or repaired to match the original in size, color, and texture. Existing concrete elements will be repaired to match the original in size, color, and texture. The large copper clad wooden doors and door framing will be restored. The doors will be fixed in an open position with a large glass wall placed within the opening, allowing occupants to see out and pedestrians to see into the Substation. ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 THE STREET It’s from the street where we engage in the texture of our neighborhood; where impromptu conversations are had, signs are read, ice cream is dropped. The street is for small things; for fine-grained experiences, for the intimate and sometimes surprising details that give our neighborhood character. These are the small things of Roslindale that delighted us in 2014. PARKLET PILOT This past spring Fornax Bread Company approached us to see if there were opportunities to host a parklet. Luckily, the City of Boston Transportation Department was entering the second year of their new Parklet Pilot program and were eager to provide Roslindale with an installation of our own. The parklet was installed in early June and provided a welcome place to relax during the day, especially during the construction of Adams Park. “TRAFFIC” LIGHTING INSTALLED Thanks to your donations, we were able to install LED blasters to illuminate George Greenamyer’s “Traffic” Sculpture at the intersection of Belgrade Avenue and Corinth Street. MURALS Roslindale Village is special for a lot of reasons, including its active and engaged business owners who want Roslindale to shine. RVMS connected these business owners (YMAA Boston, A-Plus Realty Group, and Botanical Spirits) with the resources and artists they needed to create these wonderful murals and turn our streets into a public art corridor. ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 THE SHOPKEEPERS In our storefronts and in the faces of our shopkeepers you can read the history of Roslindale as well as the foundation and environment for new businesses to grow. Whether they’ve greeted customers for decades or are opening their doors for the first time, they are our extended family and homesaway-from-home for many in our community, offering an ear to listen, a wise word, as well as something from the shelf. Our shopkeepers are diverse and tight-knit, proud and welcoming. It is this collective character that makes Roslindale Village a neighborhood unlike any in Boston. 137 BUSINESSES 25 BUSINESSES given technical assistance from marketing and new signage to permitting 6 NEW BUSINESSES in 2014 Business Owners Group list-serv created with 140 members and 40 conversation threads started by business owners Our Economic Development Committee (EDC) kicked off a quarterly Merchants’ Meeting series, beginning with a session in March to release RVMS’ Market Study developed in partnership with technical consultant Peg Barringer of Fine Point Associates, which provides useful data on local demographics, spending habits and potential sales “leakage”from our district. More than 50 business owners, residents, and city officials came out to hear Peg’s presentation, which included helpful advice on how businesses could target new customers and increase sales. The Merchants’ Meeting series continued later in the year with a small group discussion of 12 business owners regarding the physical improvements that should be prioritized in the Village. As a result of this discussion, the EDC has made progress on three of the identified priorities: • Improving signage at the MBTA commuter lot advertising the Village as a shopping destination, in collaboration with the Design Committee • Advocating for the installation of BigBelly solar trash compactors throughout the Village, with the help of Councilor Tim McCarthy’s office • Update the City of Boston’s list of bike lanes needing improvement and repainting, in partnership with Rozzie Bikes ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 THE MARKET As the RVMS Farmers Market enters its third decade of operation, it’s fitting that 2014 honored where it all began. While we awaited the construction of the newly redesigned Adams Park, the home of the Farmers Market for many years to come, the market revisited the site where it was born, the parking lot of the Roslindale Village commuter rail. The market operated there for four months before finishing the season back in the park. RE-BRANDING While the iconic Farmers Market poster by artist Brad Harris is a beautiful work of art, the market has grown and needed a new logo that reflected the future of the market and the neighborhood. We worked with the design firm Pinkergreen to create a new logo both for the regular season farmers market and for the new winter farmers market, which celebrates the many features of our award winning market. $6,025 in Bounty Bucks and matching funds spent at Farmers Market. The Boston Bounty Bucks program is a city-wide program to match SNAP dollars up to $10 to help make shopping healthy more affordable. • Average of 35 vendors a day • Winner of the Boston A-List Competition for Best Farmers Market in Boston adams Park, Roslindale Village SAturdays 9AM-130 PM rain or shine! VEGGIE Rx $1,190 in Veggie Rx spent at Farmers Market by 7 local families. “The Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental Center and the RVMS Farmers Market partnered to promote fruits and vegetable consumption with selected families based on body mass index. The four month program included group and individual educational sessions; recipe and food samples; and coupons redeemable at the Roslindale Farmers Market each month. This innovative program resulted in participants gaining increased knowledge of the importance of fruits and vegetables and the existence and breadth of food selections at the Farmers Market.” —Barbara Lottero, Director of the Greater Roslindale Medical and Dental Center design: pinkergreen BOUNTY BUCKS ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 WINTER FARMERS MARKET The inaugural season of the long-awaited Winter Farmers Market kicked off on January 3rd! Thanks to the hard work of the RVMS Farmers Market Committee, the Winter Farmers Market has been a huge success, brightening the dreary winter months with a diverse variety of winter produce and other food products, music, activities, and even mulled cider! WINTER MARKET BY THE NUMBERS 80% almost 4,800 customers attended 30% Customers spent an average of of customers from come from outside of Roslindale During their time in the Village, Customers spent an average of 20% of customers discovered a Roslindale business they didn’t know of before of customers visit other Roslindale businesses either before or after coming to the Winter Market $28 at a Roslindale Village business during their outing, totaling over $134,000 $30 at the Winter Farmers Market, totalling over $144,000 Over 100 inches of snow, 0 cancellations ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 THE PEOPLE Roslindale is a cosmopolitan neighborhood, with people from many different backgrounds making their lives here and taking an active part in the community. There were many examples this year of our neighbors expressing their love for Roslindale, through protest and parade. PETCO CAMPAIGN Population by Age ROSLINDALE In the Fall of 2014, over 1,300 Roslindale residents and shop owners signed a petition in opposition to Petco opening a store in Roslindale Village. And at a special meeting hosted by RVMS on December 2, 2014 over 200 people voiced their displeasure with Petco’s plans. Residents and shop owners voiced their concerns about Petco driving the three nearby “mom and pop” pet shops out of business. In addition, many people said that large national chain stores don’t fit the character of the dozens of locally owned shops in Roslindale Village. A large organizing committee of over 30 people gathered the signatures on petitions, posted flyers in store windows and called, emailed and Facebooked their friends, neighbors and local elected officials about the proposed Petco store and the community meeting. RVMS Executive Director Christina DiLisio presented a draft Formula Business Ordinance at the meeting that would enable Roslindale Village and other Boston business districts to have more influence over chain stores entering their business districts. Councilor Tim McCarthy pledged to work with the Mayor’s Office, RVMS, and various city departments to develop a working group to research and outline the details of the ordinance, or like measures. In addition to the usual social reception that brings new residents together, several elements to this year’s event were added to showcase Roslindale’s unique business community. Former RVMS Board Member and Design Committee Co-Chair Darlene Donovan led the group on a fantastic tour of the Village to share details about Roslindale’s history and introduce new residents to our diverse community of local businesses. Attendees were also provided with goodie bags featuring samples, coupons and other goodies graciously donated by our local business owners. ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 SHOPPING LOCAL – EVENTS The Holiday Wander is a tradition that has been growing in popularity. This year not only did we have a record 30 business participate by staying open late and offering specials on Thursday evenings in December, but many residents and businesses used the structure and energy of the Holiday Wander to create or expand upon their own events, taking ownership of the Holiday Season and showing the true spirit of an active and engaged community. POSADA NAVIDEÑA POP UP OPERA “This year’s posada was one of the biggest we’ve ever had as we partnered with the The Friends of the Library and five other businesses to create a wonderful community event. The “Posada Navideña” is a true Mexican and now Roslindale tradition, that re-enacts the story of Joseph and Mary seeking lodging or “posada” the night baby Jesus was born. Approximately 75 carolers strolled and caroled through Roslindale Village accompanied by Mariachi Estrella and were greeted with special treats from the participating businesses.” —Lucy Galvan, Posada Organizer We had a new addition to the Holiday Wander with the inception of the first annual Pop-up Opera in the Village. The Popup Opera was a business-based initiative, paid for by Tony’s Market, Birch St. House & Garden, Fornax, the Leggett Group, Joanne Rossman, the Roslindale Board of Trade, Sophia’s Grotto, and Yang’s Martial Arts Association of Boston. Within hours of giving notice, many businesses expressed interest in participating. As many as 60 people caught the opera in action and many more ‘came along’ and traveled to several businesses to listen to the wonderful, moving entertainment. At least 300 to 400 people had a chance to ‘listen in’ that night and many other people saw the media coverage and Facebook posts. Organizers: Lucy Galvan and Alejandro Rodriguez former owners of El Chavo Mexican Products. Business Participants: El Chavo Mexican Products, Romano’s Taqueria & Pizzeria, Tony’s Market, Joanne Rossman, Birch St. House & Garden, Centre Cuts Salon & Spa, Roslindale Friends of the Library. LUMINARIA “Roslindale’s third Luminaria event was held on December 20th, 2014, the eve of solstice, the longest night of the year. Over 500 lanterns lit up Adams Park and the business district and were visited by approximately 150 to 200 people of all ages and cultures during the course of the evening. Songbooks were made available to participants and passers-by so that all could join in, learn new songs, and share a light-filled evening with new neighbors and friends in our beautiful Adams Park.” —Karen Kirchoff, Organizer Organizers: Karen Kirchoff, owner of Karen Kirchoff Acupuncture & Herbs, and Richard Chalfin, resident Business Participants: 39 Attendees at event: 150–200 Organizers: Deb and Tony Debenedictis, co-owners of Tony’s Market Business Participants: Tony’s Market, Fornax, Roslindale Board of Trade, YMAA Boston, Sophia’s Grotto, Joanne Rossman, Birch St. House & Garden, The Leggett Group, Roslindale Friends of the Library. ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 SHOPPING LOCAL – PROGRAMS MAIN & ME In January, at the start of the Winter Farmers Market, RVMS in partnership with The City of Boston Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, the Office of Business Development, and the technology company Main & Me helped to launch the shop local app Main & Me. Main & Me works by notifying shoppers of local products and deals from independently owned business in the Village through a virtual storefront on their iPhone. App users can scroll through or search the albums, essentially window shopping their favorite stores. Notifications of sales, specials, or events are geo-triggered by iBeacons placed throughout the Village so as folks walk, bike, or drive by their phones are likely to receive one. If a consumer decides to redeem the notification by heading into a business, data is collected to measure foot traffic and the overall success of the campaign. ROZZIE BUCKS SPENT $2020 in Local Businesses $2904 at Farmers Market 23 Participating Businesses ROSLINDALE VILLAGE MAIN STREET | ANNUAL REPORT 2014 MARKETING This past year was one in which the assets of Roslindale were trumpeted across the City. BOSTON GLOBE AD In advance of the Holiday Wander, RVMS designed a full page advertisement to run in the special shopping insert of the Thanksgiving edition of the Boston Globe. That edition has a circulation of 360,000 in the region.
