MONTHLY NEWSLETTER GRACE AND PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH SEPTEMBER 2016 VOLUME 9 Linda Diane Craven Heidorn Linda was born in Fountainhead Tennessee. At the age of four her father moved the family to Evansville in order to take a job with Faultless Castor. Her mother got a job at WJPS, which was to influence Linda in her future jobs. She attended Henry Reis Elementary School and North High School (now referred to as “old North”), and was a member of the class of 1967. Linda has two brothers, Charles who was older and is now deceased, and Stephen, who was younger. Linda has one daughter Gail, one stepson Neil, and three grandkids, Alec, Allison and Abbey. During Linda’s senior year in high school she was a work/study student. After four hours of school, she spent the rest of the day at work. Her work was with Spiegel Catalog, which was to play a big part in her future. She married a soldier and got to live is in a bunch of places: Ft Carson, Ft Benning, Ft Lewis, Ft Jackson and Ft Hood. It was in the Ft Hood Army Hospital that Gail was born. At all these places she was able to work and Spiegel. Thank You North. Church Events September 5th - Labor Day - Office Closed September 14th - Council Meeting September 20th - Mission of Grace Meal Linda Diane Craven Heidorn Linda divorced her soldier and returned to Evansville. For the next 27 years Linda worked for WGBF/KC103/WING radio. She sorta retired, but came back to Media Mix and is now working advertising part time. Her expertise in the business makes her a valued employee, even if just part time. In 1987 Linda married Ron Heidorn (a blind date), the love of her life. They were best friends and husband and wife. They traveled a lot, and seemed to migrate to Las Vegas or French Lick or any place with gambling. Ron was a huge fan and paid for a few vacations from his winnings. Ron was an expert carpenter and made countless things to enhance their home. He also made crafts that Linda finished. She is an expert in toll painting. Linda is also an expert in counter cross stitch. Just look around her house to see many examples of beautiful work. Some she frames, and some probably find their way under the Christmas tree. Some 20 years ago Linda was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This is a particularly invasion and rare cancer with only a 40% chance of survival. But she and Ron beat the odds! She happened to be in the right place at the right time. Her doctor had just learned of new treatment for the disease. A 20 year survivor is indeed a blessing for her and for us. Linda was a long time member of Emanuel Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school and Bible school to kids for many years. Linda has become a Grace and Peace member and we are certainly blessed by her addition. Since joining Grace and Peace she has become the Fellowship chair and doing a dynamite job. She also is a member of the “cleaning ladies” group who are slowly working their way through the church and “deep cleaning.” Those who know Linda might think about her as an earthly angel. Her compassion and caring for people is well known. Linda stood by her husband Ron during his long battle with cancer. She cared for him in their home making him as comfortable as possible during some very trying times. While Ron is gone, he is by no means forgotten. Linda had cared for her aunt Elsie for some time. She took care of her, bringing her to church at Emanuel for many years. Not long after Ron’s death, Elsie’s health deteriorated quickly. She passed away this past winter. Not long after that Linda started helping Vicki Young through her journey with breast cancer. She is always there for you. A rare trait and blessing for those she knows. Linda was also a 13 year volunteer at the Dream Center for high risk kids. She headed the back to school programs and the Christmas programs. She taught kids in the after school program and often picked them up and dropped them off. We need to find a way to use that valuable expertise at Grace and Peace. Isn’t earthly angel a good title? Welcome to Grace and Peace! Worship and Food and Fun at Burdette The first annual Grace and Peace Picnic in the Park was a success! We started with a worship time with some good hymns, God’s Word, and prayer. Next there was a devotional/mixer activity where we divided into groups to put puzzles together. Each puzzle had scripture on it. We discussed the verses in our small groups and reported to the whole group what each verse was about and how it spoke to us at Grace and Peace. The food was great and everyone had fun with all kinds of games after we ate. The beautiful part was seeing all ages praying, eating, and playing together. Worship and Food and Fun at Burdette Cont. Fall Festival Sign Up Brothers and Sisters, Greetings and peace in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thank you all for being a part of our Grace and Peace family. It’s Fall Festival time again. If you were here last year you know that Grace and Peace has a booth at the Fall Festival every year. This year we only have one product to sell, our city wide famous, Donut Bank Burgers. This is the most important fund raiser of the year because the funds we receive from this event keeps the lights on and the doors of this church open to continue God’s work. We are always in need of helpers to man the booth. All it takes is just 4 hours out of the week for one shift. You can come as a couple, or a family. You can have friends, relatives, or co-workers to join you if you like. Everyone is welcome! Your participation is needed and greatly appreciated! There is a sign up form on a bulletin board in the Narthex. Please, prayerfully consider signing up for at least 1 shift, and join us in fellowship and fun as we continue to use our hands for God’s work. Thank you and God Bless You, Larry Johnson Thank You! It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly four years! Time sure does fly! I have enjoyed working at Grace and Peace and the opportunity to get to know all of you! You have been a blessing to me and my family. I know that God placed me here at just the right time in my life. I often chuckle when I think about “my plans” for life and then see how God’s plans are so amazing and perfect! My husband, Dan, and I did not plan for our family to triple in size. Ha, ha, ha! God certainly knew what he was doing, because I couldn’t have chosen a more perfect place to work while still being able to have my babies with me! Thank you very much for allowing it to happen. However, after prayerful consideration, my time at Grace and Peace must come to an end. Dan and I have decided it would be best for our family if I stay home full time with our little ones. I will also continue to work my Premier Designs Jewelry business from home. I am so excited to be home with them to be able to watch them learn and grow everyday! Lacey and I have already started working on “homework” like her big brother, Hunter! She loves to learn and already knows most of her shapes and colors and can count to 10! Levi is growing up so fast, he’s probably not far behind! I will miss seeing and talking to all of you everyday. However, I will still be around now and then, as I plan to continue to attend Wednesday Morning Bible Study and I’ll be on Facebook! My last day will be September 16th. It really has been a pleasure and I want you to know how much I appreciate everything that you have done for me. I pray that God blesses you abundantly for your generosity and love. Mary Kunce Star Gazing God brought Abram outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then God said to Abram, “So shall your descendants be.” And Abram believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:5-6 On these summer nights I have enjoyed going outside and looking at the stars, so many, so different, so far away. One Sunday in August, our Old Testament lesson was the story about God and Abram, how God took Abram outside to star gaze. “Look at all those stars! I bet you can’t count them. But if you could, just think, I am promising that you will have that many descendants.” That was an impossible promise because Abram and his wife were too old to have children. “Couldn’t happen!” But Abram believed God’s promise and guess what? It did happen. “Nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:31 That Sunday I gave each youth a paper with stars on it with the following instructions: “ In each star write or draw a way we can do the impossible when we believe God’s promises to us” I was blown away at their responses. Here are some of them. Our youth get it! I wonder what we adults would write in our stars????????? Peace, Pastor Roberta Be the first kid in space. Go in a scary cave. Try to be friends with a bully.
