Please contact us at [email protected] REGULATORY AND EXTERNAL Recognition : Update The Academy is recognised in England and Northern Ireland by Ofqual, and in Wales by the Welsh Government, to offer qualifications on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The Academy is also recognised in England by Ofqual, in Wales by the Welsh Government, and in Northern Ireland by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA), to offer General Qualifications; however, the Academy does not currently offer any General Qualifications. Accordingly, the Academy has removed the CCEA logo from its QCF Certificates. The Academy currently delivers QCF qualifications in all countries worldwide, with the exception of Scotland, where it delivers SQCF qualifications. SECTION 1 Contact details Malta The Examinations Board is pleased to announce that the Malta Qualifications Council has confirmed formal recognition of the RAD’s QCF-accredited qualifications in Malta. Each policy is subject to an annual review; in addition, policies may be updated at other times due to the requirements of the examination regulators. This process is managed by the Examinations Quality Assurance Committee, chaired by the Director of Examinations, which reports to the Artistic and Examinations sub-Committee of the Board of Trustees. A revised suite of Specification documentation, dated 1 January 2013, was published at the beginning of the year. Since then, a few further amendments and changes have been made, mainly with respect to markschemes and assessment criteria. These new editions are dated 1 March and are the current official versions, except for ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’ and the Solo Seal Award, for which the 1 January editions remain valid. 1.3.3 Free Movement has now been subsumed within the definition of ‘Ballet’, in accordance with the current syllabus development programme 1.4 (and elsewhere as appropriate): text has been updated to reflect the fact that Presentation Classes are now only offered from Grade 4, while Class Awards are offered up to and including Grade 3, and Solo Performance Awards are offered at Grades 1-3 2.1.1 Statement of recognition amended to align with information given under ‘Recognition in the United Kingdom’ above Normally we will only alert you to the detail of changes when there is a substantial impact on your day-to-day involvement with the Examinations Board. The Specifications are the authoritative source for Examinations Board policy, procedural and administrative information, syllabus content and assessment criteria. As such, we recommend that all teachers acquaint themselves with these important documents, and use them as the first point of reference for queries related to examinations. 3.1.2 A new clause related to the registration of Schools associated with previous malpractice 3.3.18 The restrictions on entry for Demonstration Classes (including the requirement to also enter Examinations / Class Awards / Presentation Classes, and the ineligibility of Demonstration Classes as part of the minimum time requirement) have been removed 3.3.20 New guidelines related to teachers who ‘join together’ for one entry 3.3.14, 4.1.2 New cut-off dates for minimum age requirements It should be noted that there are two separate suites of documentation: one for examinations offered outside Scotland, and the other for examinations offered in Scotland. The full list of documents is as follows: 4.2 Pre-requisites section now applies to Solo Performance Awards as well as Vocational Graded Examinations 4.6.5 Minimum requirements for studio sizes for Intermediate Foundation / Intermediate Examinations in AECs are now recommended, not required 4.7.7 Where a mixture of live and recorded music is permitted, the pianist should operate the CD 4.7.9 A screen placed between CD operator and candidates is best practice 5.6 – 5.12 It should be noted that these guidelines deal primarily with the administration of these various classes and examinations. Information about the content is found in the relevant Specification 5.9 A number of amendments and clarifications have been made to the guidelines on the administration of Solo Performance Awards 5.16.4 Re-entries due to withdrawal may be for the same or higher level of examination, with any balance in fee payable 6.2.9 New clause indicating that the Academy reserves the right, in the interests of candidates, to release results to another person in exceptional circumstances, eg. in the event of a dispute between a School and a teacher Examinations Information, Rules and Regulations In recent months, changes and updates to policies have included: • Annual Examination Tour Planning Policy (February 2013) – no significant changes • Solo Seal Award Guidelines for Judges and Guidelines for Administrators (February 2013) ºº Change to note - organisers should be aware that the Guidelines for Judges should now be sent to the Examiner as well as the guest judge in advance of the Solo Seal Award taking place. • Teachers’ Guide to Examination Scheduling in AECs (March 2013) – changes made to the formatting of the document • Tour Scheduling Policy (March 2013) – no significant changes • Procedures for the recognition of centres to offer awards (February 2013) – no significant changes • Examinations Information, Rules and Regulations • ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’ Demonstration Classes • Pre-Primary in Dance and Primary in Dance • Grades 1-3 • Grades 4-5 • Grades 6-8 • Intermediate Foundation • Intermediate and Advanced Foundation • Advanced 1 & 2 • Solo Seal Award 2 Details Policies and guidelines A new Specification for Advanced Foundation, 1 and 2 will be published in time for the launch of the new Advanced Foundation (male/female), Advanced 1 & 2 (female) syllabi in September 2013. SECTION 2 SECTION 2 POLICY UPDATES AND REMINDERS Specifications various ALL New Specifications for ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’, Pre-Primary in Dance / Primary in Dance, and Solo Seal Award, bringing these documents in line with the formats developed for Grades 1-8 and Intermediate Foundation – Advanced 2, have been published A comprehensive review of markschemes, assessment criteria, and definitions of terminology has been carried out. All markschemes are now in line with those devised as part of recent syllabus developments, making the approach employed more unified, consistent, and straightforward. See the article on markschemes published in the June 2012 edition of Focus on Exams 3 Details ALL A statement on required skills, knowledge and understanding has been added to each Specification Pre-Primary in Dance / Primary in Dance 2.2.4 – Either Dance A or Dance B is to be performed Grades 1-3 A number of amendments and clarifications have been made to the guidelines on the content of Solo Performance Awards Vocational Graded Uniform requirements amended to reflect new policy on split sole shoes and full range of leotard colours Solo Seal Award 6.2.1 – information on provision of pianists 3.7.1 – reworded to clarify that candidates must achieve at least ‘occasionally’ in each component in order to be awarded a Medal 6.3 – unitard added to male uniform Incorrect Certificates During November 2012, owing to an administrative error, some Certificates issued by the RAD for qualifications regulated by Ofqual and the Welsh Government contained some errors. These errors related to the titling of the qualifications and the Regulators’ logos, as well as some minor errors in design and layout. It is important to note that, in the case of the errors of titling, these results are not considered by the regulators to be regulated qualifications. Accordingly, any candidate wishing to obtain independent verification of the legitimacy of their qualification may have this called into question. However, no incorrect results or grades were issued, and the RAD Examinations Board will accept and confirm all these Certificates as legitimate for its own purposes. Accordingly, the RAD is happy to re-issue a correct Certificate free of charge for any candidate who received an incorrect Certificate. However, these replacements will need to be issued in accordance with our Policy and procedures for processing and issuing results and certificates, available at: 4 www.rad.org.uk/certificates This includes requirements to return the incorrect Certificate before the replacement is issued, and ‘REPLACEMENT CERTIFICATE’ to be printed at the bottom of each replacement Certificate. Incorrect Certificates may be identified as follows: 1. Grades 1-5: the word ‘Award’ in the title has been incorrectly replaced by ‘Certificate’; eg. ‘Level 1 Certificate’ rather than ‘Level 1 Award’. 2. Grades 6-7: the word ‘Certificate’ in the title has been incorrectly replaced by ‘Award’; eg. ‘Level 3 Award’ rather than ‘Level 3 Certificate’. 3. The Ofqual logo does not include the ‘For more information...’ strapline, and the logo of the Welsh Assembly Government rather than that of the Welsh Government is used. 4. Intermediate, Advanced Foundation, and Advanced 1 & 2 Certificates: a small space between the ‘QCF Unit’ and ‘European...’ lines is missing. (This does NOT mean that the qualification is invalid, and is an error of design only). We will shortly be changing the appearance of Presentation Class and Demonstration Class Certificates. The new designs will incorporate a monochrome coat of arms (red for Demonstration Classes, blue for Presentation Classes), replacing the multicoloured coat of arms currently on the Presentation Class certificates, and the ‘star burst’ Demonstration Class Certificate. The Presentation class will appear similar; it will only be the colour of the coat of arms that is changing. The Demonstration Class certificate change is more significant: it will align more closely with the Presentation Class Certificate, and also offers children taking the Demonstration Classes a certificate that looks more professional and ‘grown up’, and which bears a clearer association with the RAD brand. New versions of the Progress reports for Grades 4-5 Presentation Classes are in production. These will no longer have Grades 1-3 listed on them, as the Grades 1-3 Presentation Classes have been replaced by Class Awards. Examination Entry When entering candidates for examinations, please ensure that the most up-to-date versions of the online AEC entry forms are used. Using previous versions of the form will mean that the fees are incorrect: SECTION 2 SECTION 2 Presentation and Demonstration Class Certificates and Progress Reports Reference www.rad.org.uk/article_green. asp?id=632&realCat=480 Please ensure that full addresses for examination studios (AECs), including building number or name, street, town and postal code, are provided, so that the Examiner has full information for travel to the correct location. After entry, any changes to an examination schedule should be sent to the organising RAD Office as soon as they are known, so that the Examiner can be informed, and prepare for the change. In accordance with paragraph 3.6.6 of Examinations Information, Rules & Regulations, such changes should only be made in exceptional circumstances, and an administration fee is normally payable. Examiners will not normally accept any changes to the agreed schedule on the day of the examinations. Study Choice Forms New study choice forms are now available from: www.rad.org.uk/article_green. asp?id=247&realCat=316 These include provision for the Solo Performance Awards as well as all Graded Examinations. The forms are now optional, and essentially for use where it is felt that there might be communication problems between the candidates and the Examiner. 5 Conditions in examination studios Music Marking When setting candidates for exams, teachers should refer to Examinations Information Rules and Regulations (Section 4.4) for information on the maximum number of candidates that can be examined in a set. There have been instances reported where studios are too cold for examinations. Please note paragraph 4.6.9 of Examination, Information Rules and Regulations which states that ‘the studio should be at a suitable working temperature, which should not normally fall below 18.3°C/65°F. It should be well ventilated and heated as appropriate and in extremely cold weather extra heating may need to be provided’. Where live music is used in examinations, it is strongly advised that candidates rehearse with the pianist prior to their examination. This gives them a chance to get used to the experience of dancing to live music, which can sound different to recordings made for rehearsal purposes. Please note that all Examiners, whether RAD Examiners (formerly Grades Examiners), Vocational Grades Examiners, or Dual Examiners, receive exactly the same training, and are subject to exactly the same monitoring and standardisation procedures, with respect to examining Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate Examinations. The approaches to assessment used in AECs and RAVs are exactly the same. Any concerns about this matter should be expressed in accordance with the Examinations Board’s policy on complaints, enquiries about results, and appeals, available on RAD websites. This information should be used to help ensure that sets are as full as possible, or if numbers will result in an incomplete set of candidates, to set them in a logical and efficient fashion. For example, 5 candidates taking Grade 5 should be set as 3 and 2, rather than 4 and 1. 10 candidates taking Primary in Dance should preferably be set as 4 – 4 − 2, although 3 – 3 – 4 is acceptable. Candidates should not be set in smaller numbers than necessary in order to make up the minimum time requirement. In sets of 3 candidates, where the Specification details exercises to be taken 2 x 2, exercises should be set 2 + 1. The single candidate can dance alone, or alternatively the teacher can arrange for a candidate in the first pair to dance again with the third candidate. Please be aware of the most logical, financially viable and candidate-friendly way to set candidates, and apply this knowledge when setting candidates. 6 Examiner training Examiner training programmes took place in October 2012 in Sydney, Australia, and in March 2013 at RAD headquarters, London. As has been standard practice for many years, the new Examiners have been shadowing established RAD Examiners as part of their training programme. It has been wonderful to have support from teachers who have found themselves hosting two Examiners for their examination session. ‘I think my little ones will be delighted to have, not just one, but two Examiners: I will tell them that they must dance twice as well as they normally do!’ was the comment from one teacher. Some Examiners have reported that recorded music is being played too loudly during examinations. This can affect candidates’ responses to the different dynamics of the music. Equally, of course, a volume level which is too soft can have a similar effect. Testing the playback equipment before the start of the examination will ensure that the music is played at an appropriate volume. Please note that where the syllabus indicates that live music must be used in examinations, this requirement MUST be followed, even if most other examinations in a session use recorded music only (see the article in the previous edition of Focus on Exams on this matter). Where a pianist is engaged for examinations and does not arrive on the Examination day, the examinations will normally need to be cancelled and rescheduled. In exceptional circumstances, alternative provision can be made; please contact your local RAD Office or RAD headquarters in such circumstances. SECTION 2 SECTION 2 Candidate sets As mentioned above in relation to Specifications, a comprehensive revision of examination markschemes has been undertaken. As part of this, Examiners will no longer award a mark of 0 where one or two exercises which relate to that component mark are not shown. Instead, the Examiner will scale the technique, music and performance marks appropriately, according to the proportion of exercises shown. A mark of 0 is only awarded for ‘no work shown’; i.e. no work at all related to that particular component mark. 7 ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’, the curriculum for children from 2½ to 5 years, was launched in 2004 and continues to be the essential resource for all who teach dance to young children. The market for activities for young children has never been greater. There is an increasing acceptance of the importance of early years education, and parents are keen to enrol their children in as many activities as possible, in order to provide them with a head start in life. These activities can greatly impact on children’s development, but, as in all aspects of education, this depends on the approach of the teacher and the curriculum taught. Dance continues to be one of the most popular of such activities. The heightened exposure of dance in the media has helped feed the current boom; classes such as ‘Baby Ballet’ and ‘Mighty Movers’ are in abundance. Never before has the quality of early years teaching and learning been so important to a child’s subsequent achievement. The provision of specialist teachers in all fields of early years education is essential: classes should be structured so that they have a real impact on development and learning, rather than just a way of entertaining children and keeping them occupied. 8 Royal Academy of Dance teachers have a significant advantage over their competitors: the Academy’s early years curriculum, ‘Dance To Your Own Tune’ was planned with a developmental perspective from the outset. Designed as the foundation to the Academy’s Pre-Primary in Dance syllabus, the curriculum helps children become skilful, expressive and confident movers in an environment that is developmentally and age-appropriate. Children dance for a fun-filled lesson, but in addition they come away with skills that will lead naturally into the Pre-Primary in Dance syllabus. Endorsing PrePrimary in Dance, David L Gallahue, Professor Emeritus of Kinesiology at Indiana University and a leading world expert on motor (movement) development, states: ‘The focus is on a wide variety of the fundamental locomotor, manipulative and stability skills of early childhood. These skills are important because they form the basis for the more complex and specialized movement, sport and dance skills of later childhood and beyond.’ The flexible nature of ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’ means that it can be easily integrated into any ‘Baby Ballet’ or ‘Mighty Movers’ class, marketed to parents as the necessary foundation for all future dance learning. The curriculum is designed for young children and is split into two levels: Level 1 aimed at 2 ½ - 3 ½ year olds and Level 2 for 3½ - 5 year olds. Following the recent change to the policy for minimum ages for entry to RAD examinations, teachers may find that ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’ fills a gap in their provision for this age range. SECTION 3 SECTION 2 FEATURE Parents can be reassured that the movement taught underpins all learning: ‘Movement is the door to learning’. Learning through movement is central to ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’, not only in the development of movement, dance and physical skills but also in promoting learning in key developmental areas: cognitive, motor, emotional and social. By experiencing movement, children can develop their bodies, minds, confidence and self-esteem, as well as their ability to communicate. The classes provide an outlet for the young child’s innate desire to move, and the opportunity to develop their ability to express themselves, safely, with co-ordination and control. The non-prescriptive ethos of the curriculum encourages both teacher and child to ‘Dance to Their Own Tune’, making decisions according to the child’s needs and the teacher’s preferred methodology. The pack currently comprises sample lessons (DVD), two CDs, and a Handbook with advice on class content, planning, management and resources for recording progress. From July 2013, teachers will notice a complete redesign of this package: it will be sold as a book (A4 sized, in line with the format for other RAD syllabus publications), accompanied by a wallet containing the DVD and CDs (the content of the book, DVD and CDs will remain unchanged). In addition, there will be a colouring book which can be purchased for children to further their enjoyment of the various themes as they progress through the curriculum. Demonstration Classes are an optional part of the curriculum; they allow the children to perform a selection of the material covered over the year to an invited audience of parents/carers of those participating, and an RAD Examiner. The Examiner will not assess the participants, but will watch and enjoy the demonstration, adding to the sense of occasion. 9 www.rad.org.uk/article_green. asp?id=369&realCat=381 Never before has ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’ been more relevant to the needs of the current market. Parents want quality activities and tuition, and Royal Academy of Dance teachers can provide them with that and more. Using the literature supporting the curriculum, teachers can advertise their early years classes to parents, who can be reassured that by following a Royal Academy of Dance curriculum their children can have the head start they were hoping for.
