Message from the Director
I thank all of our foster homes
who have opened their homes in
2012 to care for the 125 Bassets
we saved. Without you, we would
not have been able to save that
many! Foster homes are like
GOLD as you know.
I thank all the volunteers for everything they do. We have people
who transport constantly to get
these dogs out of the shelters to
the vets or to foster homes.
Thanks to everybody involved! We
have transporters, donors, adopters, Angela the webmaster, Holly
with microchipping, Sandy in the
gift shop, and all the coordinators
that help keep this rescue going.
Kathie and Sandi with adoption
applications, Pat Overmyer the
transport coordinator, Cathy Rice,
and Martha Moore who helps with
fundraising. Again, thanks to everybody who has volunteered,
adopted and/or donated to OBHR
in 2012.
Our goal in 2013 is to get more
fundraisers together to provide a
more steady stream of revenue to
be used to rescue the Bassets.
The most recent vet/kennel bill
received was $3,000 and we are
out of funds and foster homes to
take in dogs at this time. However, we continue to assist with
Bassets that come to our atten-
tion by networking with other rescue groups. We've got our new
website up and running, it's easier to keep up to date so we can
advertise the adoptable dogs better than ever and we also try to
always have a fundraiser or auction going on. We also have a
very active Facebook group.
We're trying to get more inventory
for our gift shop to keep things
interesting. We already have the
date and location picked out for
BassetFest, hopefully that event is
better than ever in 2013, and I
will see you all there so I can
thank you in person for your contribution to Ohio Basset Hound
Rescue.

Emily came into the rescue from a hoarding situation where 13 other dogs and over 30 cats were placed. Emily is
a low key girl who likes to chase the occasional squirrel or come by for a pat on the head. She can be a typical
―bossy‖ Basset hound so an experienced hound owner is preferred. We believe she may have been harassed by
the other dogs in the home. Emily has her own bed she sleeps in and will not attempt to get on the sofa or chair.
Name Bella
Age 4-5 yrs old
Location Blacklick, OH

Looking for a laid back snuggle bug? Bella is your girl. Bella is a 4-5
year old tri color female. She loves to spend her time hanging out with
her humans and getting belly and neck rubs and snuggles. Bella would
thrive in a quieter home either as an only child or as a companion for
mature children or pets. She is currently being fostered with another
Basset and other small dogs and is doing great with them. Bella loves
walks and car rides and is an absolute pleasure to have around.
Name Bonnie

Bonnie is a red and white female rescued from a shelter in Sandusky with her sidekick Clyde. Bonnie is a sweet girl and seems
to remember her house-training after 6+ months of being in a
kennel. She will follow you around and loves whatever attention
you give her. She's been almost nonstop motion since coming to
her foster home...checking everything! She is getting along great
with the other dogs in the house and enjoys raiding the toy box.
Bonnie is a sweet, cuddly girl and enjoys spending hours every
day playing with toys and wrestling with Clyde. Overall she is a
very quiet Basset, only barking when squirrels attempt to invade
her turf. Please consider giving Bonnie that loving home that she
deserves!
Name Sweetie
Age 6 years
Sex Female
Location Akron, OH
Foster Contact [email protected]
Adoption Do$200

Sweetie loves people, doesn't mind other dogs, never met a treat
she didn't like, and happily flops over for a belly rub after just a
few minutes after getting acquainted with a new person. She
weighs in at 53 pounds and was originally found as a stray and
pulled from a county shelter. She rides well in a car and is a wiggly, jiggly, happy Basset girl. Sweetie is also very good with cats.
Name Boss
Age 8-10 years old
Sex Male
Location Ann Arbor, MI
Foster Contact [email protected]
Adoption Do$100
nation
Boss is an 8-10 year old tri colored Basset hound. When he first arrived
at the kennel, he was skin and bones and was very shy, scared, and was
not sure how to take in all this newfound TLC. After a few short weeks of
some hearty meals, several baths, and vet care, Boss became the life of
Doggie Daycare. He has put on weight and his personality is bursting at
the seams. Now he gets super excited to greet everyone he meets each
day. He will be great in a home with another dog or as an only child.
Name Clyde
Age 7-8 years old
Sex Male
Location Huber Heights
Foster Contact [email protected]
Adoption Do$200
nation
Clyde was rescued from a shelter in the Sandusky area with his friend
Bonnie. Clyde is a very curious boy and will follow you around everywhere to see what you're doing...especially if you're in the kitchen
cooking! He loves tossing around plush toys and barks and dances
around them. He follows Bonnie everywhere and occasionally shows
interest in the other dogs. He's a small guy...around 30 pounds and
seems youthful for his age. Clyde loves getting brushed. He and Bonnie
spend hours every day playing with toys and wrestling.

Letter from the Editor
One Saturday, I had a meeting
scheduled with Eva and Sandy
Hickman, who runs our gift
shop. We needed to get the gift
shop up and running again - due
to website incompatibility, we had
to recreate the gift shop from
scratch. We are always in the position of needing money, so we
needed to get that gift shop online
again.
The night before the meeting,
emails started flying around
about a 17 year old dog who
needed rehomed immediately. Seventeen years old! That
dog should be lounging on orthopedic pillows and eating warm
gruel somewhere, not facing the
need to adjust to a new home! The
owner was a hospitalized hoarder
and the doctors would not release
the owner until his dog was
gone. Family and friends of the
hoarder were poised to euthanize. I figured our meeting would
be cancelled. Dogs needing rescue trump the rescue needing
revenue and on such short notice,
I figured Eva herself would be
forced to do the transport.
I talked to Eva a few times that
morning, in between her frantic
phone calls to transporters and
fosters. She managed to get the
dog from the hoarding situation
and into a foster home. Without
even really being involved, I
breathed a sigh of relief. Dog rescued, check. Gift shop back in
place, check.
It‘s so easy to operate on the periphery like that. To not see the
bigger picture. The transporters
scrambled. Eva logged hours on
the phone arranging everything. But none of those inconv eniences r eally meant a
Page 8
thing. Minor stress and hassle
experienced by a handful of people to get one dog into a better
situation.
The name of that
‗better situation‘ was Bobbie
Strong, who sent out the following
message once she came up for air
after a night with this poor dog:
Prayers please for our new 17
year old foster Daisy who arrived
in neglected condition, very frightened, and very needy. She cried
ALL night, even with a ThunderShirt. Her vet visit on Monday will
tell us many things. We’re not
sure if she is just frightened or in
pain. She is finally sleeping at
6am while my Prince & I sit with
eyelids drooping.
Bobbie made it through the weekend with Daisy. Monday rolled
around and she dutifully reported
to the vet to receive the verdict.
A sad day at the Strong household. Not good news for our new
foster, 17 year old Daisy, so she
was released to The Bridge.
We could wash away caked-on
grime from her ears, clip her curled
toenails, provide a warm bed near
the fireplace, and feed her a warm
meal of eggs & toast. We could not
erase the years of neglect, nor relieve the pain brought on by old
age and disease. She received
more TLC in the last few days
than her owner, who professed to
love her, had given her in a lifetime. I told her how wonderful she
was as she made her journey, and
I will spread her ashes at the dog
park. Thank you to Eva for crying
with me - I guess we should worry
when we DON'T cry. Funny how
some just touch your heart - I
found myself smelling the sweater
she had on before I tossed it in the
washer. At least in the end, someone cried for Daisy.
And this, again, is what I love so
much about Ohio Basset Hound
Rescue. A Director who says yes
to a dog with little hope of adoption, a transport team who give
away their Saturday on a moment‘s notice to save a dog, a foster home who welcomed the dog
and cared for her as if Daisy were
her own personal pet of 17 years
rather than a brand new rescue
intake. I‘m proud to be a part of
this rescue group and humbled by
the good qualities demonstrated
by all parties involved.
