PAW PRINTS Dedicated to the rescue, care, and adoption of homeless, abandoned, and neglected animals September 2014 Fall Safety Tips Kids are back in school which means Fall is just around the corner. For pets, every season has its dangers and Fall is no exception. So what are some of the things you need to look out for so your dogs and cats stay safe? Anti-Freeze- As winter approaches, many people add anti-freeze to their cars. Anti-freeze is very attractive to dogs especially because of the taste but it’s deadly. Make sure you clean up any spills and keep any antifreeze out of your dog’s reach. Halloween - If you have Halloween candy around, remember no candy is good for dogs, but chocolate in Rodents and Snakes - When the weather cools off, particular is toxic. rodents and snakes are on the move, looking for places Thanksgiving - When turkey day rolls around, it’s to keep warm. Aloft Hotel - A dog’s new best friend The Asheville Aloft Hotel is a contemporary dog friendly hotel that has chosen CAAR as their quarterly community service project. Their goal is to help find permanent homes for several CAAR dogs. Since the program’s inception, five dogs have already been adopted. David McCartney, Manager Whether it is a CAAR dog, or a hotel guest’s pet, life is full at Aloft. Guests and staff shower them with love and attention, and much time is spent at the hotel’s dog park. CAAR greatly appreciates the support of Aloft and hopes this partnership will continue to provide a source of loving homes and positive exposure in our rescue efforts. Aloft Hotel Asheville is located at 51 Biltmore Avenue. You can contact them at aloftashevilledowntown.com. Featured Pet Meet Sonny Sonny’s clipped ear is the calling card of a TNR feral cat. TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) is a program where all the feral cats in a colony are trapped, neutered and then returned to their territory, where caretakers provide them with regular food and shelter. The clipped ear serves as a visual indicator that a particular cat has been neutered. Charlie's Angels' TNR initiative is still in the infancy stage, but Sonny is a constant reminder of how rewarding the effort can be. Sonny was trapped as a young kitten and after his neuter, he was placed in foster care for socialization. He now lives in our cattery and is available for adoption. He has an amazing story to tell that begins with his ears. For more about Sonny drop us an email at [email protected] or visit us online CharliesAngelsAnimalRescue.com. PAGE 1 HAPPY TAILS Stories of love shared, families found, and second chances...all made possible through rescue and adoption. It was the worst of Heartworm disease is a death times for two young sentence for many dogs. It is mama kitties. Both expensive to treat, and left found themselves untreated, will most certainly with a litter of kittens kill your dog. LeRoy (now and no place to call Buddy) was one of the first home. A local CAAR dogs to undergo HW shelter informed us of treatment and the first to suffer Ginny and her sweet any side effects. The family of five. A concerned county resident reached out procedure left him blind and for help with Sable after she moved in underneath their very unsure of himself. In home to care for her two newborns. Wonderful foster stepped a long-term foster, who provided a stable home families stepped up in both cases to make saving these with the necessary accommodations to help him regain nine lives possible. his confidence. Without her, Buddy most assuredly would never have met his new mom. As it became time to wean each of the litters, there was an interesting development. Sable was quickly adopted, When Buddy met Alma Harper for the first time, he and her babies, Wilma and Betty moved into our Safe picked her out of a crowd, went straight to her, and put Haven's cattery along with Ginny. Now who do you his head near her leg. Buddy knew before Alma did think started mothering Wilma and Betty? You guessed that he was home. Buddy joins "lovebug" Foxy, also it! Ginny nurtured them just like they were her own, and newly adopted from CAAR and just finishing HW soon the three were inseparable. Their attachment for treatment. He has even regained some of his sight. "I each other proved irresistible, and all three were adopted can't find anything wrong except he is so unsure of what together! It was the best of times! (NOTE: Three of is going on with his life. I don't trade, exchange, or get Ginny's kittens remain available for adoption.) rid of my babies. This is home forever," said Alma. Shortly after CAAR rescued Crady from a local shelter, her foster noticed blood in her urine. Tests soon revealed a badder mass. Given her relatively young age, we remained hopeful that the mass was benign. Crady's foster parents took a step of faith. "We have fallen head over heels in love and want her to be with us for as long as she has...and hopefully that will be many years! I am so hopeful this doesn't end up being cancer, but if it is, we will see it out till the end." We are delighted to report that further testing revealed NO cancer. Crady is on the way to a full recovery and a happy ever after. Thanks to Sue and Casey for standing by this sweet girl! As a “foster parent” you provide a safe, loving place where the animal can stay until we have arranged transport to rescue or to their next home. CAAR pays all vet costs associated with animals in foster care, including immunizations, medications, and any needed vet visits. CAAR also provides for spay and neutering for all animals that are old enough prior to transport to rescue. If you do not have a crate for the animal, we are happy to lend you one. If you are able to provide dog/cat food, a collar and a leash, that’s great, but we can also provide food if requested. To learn more about becoming a CAAR Foster, visit our website at CharliesAngelsAnimalRescue.com and click on the Foster tab at the top.
