IMBBA Judges hear this quite a bit.
Well I didn’t paint it… my painter did, or I
trusted him to make it right. Fundamentaly,
it’s your bike, project, custom or restoration
you’re the owner. Or your the builder. Many
times bikes are presented in competitions,
that have been undercoated, short cut to just
primer under painted. Or massive overspray
on the underside of the paint. Many times,
paint or clear coat sags on the lower part of
body rivets, hinges, and some contouring
edges. Especially the ends of front and rear
fenders. Or, the graphix you can feel as
bumps along the cut lines or decals. What is going on?
Many painters, especially when the air brush comes out, are fearful once the
graphics meet their strict satasfaction. Then it goes to be clear coated is when the final
impressions and scores on paint begin to swap paths. The painter will add three to four
coats of clear. For fear of wet sanding and breaking through a one or two coat clear into
the graphics. When heavy clear is used, IMBBA judges can tell. Verses when each coat of
clear is wet sanded and another coat applied till the finish meets the painters desires for
their customer. Often. Great graphics. Colors and combinations end up losing points
because of the heavy first clear coat. When buffing the clear when heavy clear coats are
applied stretches and distorts the clear coating. Then light from the human eye transmited
and receives the light that now is distorted taking away many of the luster and pigments
provided by the manufacturer in their design of those colors. In addition, many painters
stop on edges and use less color and are satasfied to add clear for protection. These are
evident and can take what would be a great paint job to the human eye and lose points to
the knowing professional judge. It is your responsibility to identify to the painter if it isn’t
you painting and educate them on completing the finish of the paint on all undersides and
edges equally and suffuicently. In addition, Painters often mask lines and graphics applied
as components submitted off the bike. Then when it comes time to bolt it all together is
when you stand back and see the lines and graphics don’t line up from front to back or left
tro right side. Besure to have the painter mask and mark refrences to the surfaces prior to
graphic painting or striping , then remove and paint. Points are taken from many beautiful
murals and graphics and paint technology applied that rivals the human eye, but, when

INTERNATIONAL MASTER BIKE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
judged it is all about longevity and proper application and finsh that scores the higher
points. In some cases, Best paint is not always the prettiest picture or bright color. But in
how the painter preserved the fit, form function and longiviety for their customer.
As we close the year and for some, store our bikes
for winter, I want to make a challenge of all our
tradesman of which share the passion to build, race,
customize, restore, or create from outside the box
to take the down time and become members of the
IMBBA. We have grown in our now eight years and
many of our industry are now taking the stand and
passing the word to their fellow builders. Friends
and associates, employee’s and the like. To seek out
third party certification for their education training
and validation rather than self proclamation. In
these days we can no longer afford to throw chance to the wind that our decreasing market budget to
get the word out will prevail. IMBBA’s global network of builders. And members can do that for you.
Many have been discouraged by IMBBA’s front door by in the privacy of their shops or home computer
have completed the IMBBA “certify me worksheet” on IMBBA website. And assumed that the points
generated by answering the questions regarding skills and education are the final score. Let me assure
you you are undermining your self. Once you submit the questionaire. IMBBA opens a portifilo and
begins to valadate your answers and confirms points. Based on requested documentation from you.
While this process is time consuming, The points then increase from your questionaire as verification of
your industry expereinces and skills become verified. So you may leave the computer dissapointed that
after filling out the “certify me worksheet” say you only scored 400 points. That you see yourself as a
Master rather than a Bike builder at one level or another. Once submitted and those answers verified
do your points get added to years of documented experience. You may find those points to be 500 when
all is said and done. Once verified, IMBBA can then increase the points respectivley. So while the season
slows for most in the North, now is the time to take advantage and become IMBBA members and
support the industry and obtain third party certification. Which helps you as well as the riding public
who will now see your certification by a third party, rather than self proculation.
IMBBA works hard to maintain the records, history and assures you that we are driven by facts and
points and not a good olde boys network that get you reconised. Have a safe and happy Holiday season!

Rick Fairless- was born and raised in a
suburb of Dallas, Texas in a
neighborhood where he started riding
bikes before the age of 10. He and his
brother and their friends rode around
the hills near their homes nearly every
day.
When Rick was just 10, he started
working as a stock boy for his uncle’s
chain of paint stores and worked his way
up to manager of the Irving store. He
built that store up to be the #1 store in the chain, then moved on to become an outside sales
rep. When Glidden purchased that company, Rick continued to work for them, eventually
becoming the #1 sales representative in the country.
But, Rick’s real love was customizing motorcycles. At that time, Easyriders custom bike shops
were opening around the country. In 1996 he opened what was then called “Easyriders Dallas.”
He opened the store in an old building from the 1930s and decorated it with “goofy stuff that
reflects my goofy life.” Rick wanted to put a bar next door and opened Strokers Ice House.
Rick’s Strokers “Empire” spans 2.5 acres close to downtown Dallas. In 2002, Easyriders decided
to drop the franchise plan, and Rick called the shop Strokers Dallas. The newest addition to the
Strokers compound is Strokers Ink Tattoo and Piercing Parlor.
Rick is a master bike builder who creates one-off custom motorcycles that have been featured
in motorcycle magazines around the world. Rick has also been featured on television on the
Discovery Channel’s Biker Build-Off, Storage Wars, and Auction Kings. He and Strokers Dallas
were featured in the Speed Channel series “Texas Hardtails” in 2005 and in “Ma’s Roadhouse”
on truTV in 2010.
Rick and his wife Susan have five children – all of whom have worked with them in the Strokers
Empire.
