A LETTER FROM OUR MEDICAL DIRECTOR
As the Medical Director of Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS), I have precious
little time for reflection. The days—and nights—can be very long and the work
incredibly challenging.
But every day I witness countless examples of the significant impact we have on
patients’ lives. By “we,” I mean not only the capable staff members of HAS, but
also you, our donors and partners, whose support makes possible everything
that we do.
Day in and day out, thanks to your generous support, I see mothers and infants
survive high-risk pregnancies, children recover from malnutrition, and people
afflicted with serious injuries or illness return to productive lives.
Families who never thought their loved one would survive have shed tears of
joy as they thank us for performing life-saving surgery, for providing essential
medication, or for diagnosing and treating an illness that no one else within their
reach could.
In the community, there are also many healthy people who do not need hospital
care, thanks to HAS.

In 2013, supporters of HAS made it possible for us to save thousands of lives
while effectively addressing some of the most serious public health crises facing
Haiti in recent memory.
We saw more patients in the hospital than in any year since 2010, when a
massive earthquake struck Haiti. And we saw more serious injuries than we have
since then, including many caused by road traffic accidents. Such accidents are
occurring much more frequently here—an unintended consequence of postearthquake road improvements.
We also addressed another outbreak of cholera, and succeeded in curtailing
the spread of this infectious disease with effective preventive measures, which
continue today.
And we dealt with a significantly greater incidence of non-communicable
diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, that are traditionally found in
wealthier parts of the world. As in the rest of the developing world, these
diseases are creeping into Haiti while still-prevalent diseases of poverty, such as
tuberculosis and HIV, must continue to be addressed. This “double burden” of
disease is among the greatest challenges we have ever faced – and one that will
unfortunately persist for some time.
Your support in 2013 made it possible for HAS to meet these challenges.
I wish you could experience firsthand the gratitude of our patients for your
kindness and generosity. It is gratifying to be able to help so many in such
significant ways. On behalf of our patients and all of us on the HAS team, I offer
