KENWOOD CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2012 Sonoma County, California 990440 (XD) 750 mL $23.95 2 This crowd-pleaser consistently offers the purity of cassis and depth of ripe black fruit that most readily define Californian Cabernet. Add to this the delectable toast and spice aromas, not to mention the structure, balance and firm tannin, and it’s easy to see why this is considered such a great value. Will shine alongside lamb. Smooth and mouth-filling on the palate with black fruit and smoke on a long finish. The Corvina and Rondinella grapes for this Italian red wine are vinified at harvest time while the rest are sent to drying rooms where the grapes slowly become raisined until they are pressed in January. Equipped with such innovations as the appassimento method of winemaking with dried grapes, Veneto’s vintners have created wines to suit every occasion and every palate. In modern-day Veneto, the innovation continues, with producers seeking new sites outside the more traditional appellations and making outstanding and unconventional wines under the IGT/IGP banner to add even more depth and nuance to the region’s stable of wines. With all this to choose from, it’s no wonder foodies turn to Veneto for wines to complement a fantastic range of dishes, from Asiago cheese to zucchini risotto. Here’s an alphabetizer to get you started learning the language of Veneto and its wines. Racks of grapes for Amarone in a drying loft at Masi. A AMARONE Made from partially raisinated grapes, this rich, decadent, dry red style is Veneto’s most famous wine. LE BERTAROLE PODERE CARIANO AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2009 DOC TASTING NOTE: The 2009 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Podere Cariano shows tight lines and an inner elegance that you don’t always see with air-dried fruit. Crisp contours of berry fruit, cassis and caramelized brown sugar give it direction and purpose. Fresh accents of cherry and purple fruit add playful accents on the close. Drink 2015-2022. DONATONI MASSENÀ APPASSIMENTO 2011 Uve Leggermente Appassite, IGT Rosso Veneto The 2014 Gambero Rosso guide awarded this wine BBM, denoting a rating of Very Good to Excellent. TASTING NOTE: Made with partially dried grapes, this massively generous, flavour-drenched wine offers complex notions of plum sauce, dark cherry, espresso, chili-infused dark chocolate and a hint of caramelized sugar. The long, coffee-and-chocolate finish is spicy and dynamic. Absolutely superb value. (V INTAGES panel, Feb. 2015) Full-bodied & Smooth 332403 (D) EUDICOTS FORMAGGIO GARGANEGA The clade of flowering plants that includes olive trees and sunflowers, eudicots also include radicchio, that leafy purple-andwhite vegetable that is native to Veneto and perhaps the secondmost-famous produce grown there (after wine grapes, of course). Veneto is home to world-renowned cheeses such as Asiago and Monte Veronese, which are spectacular partners for the local wines. The grape that forms the spine of Soave, the region’s signature dry white wine, is known for its lemony and nutty characteristics. 750 mL $16.95 2 HISTOIRE DE MA VIE Although he wrote his infamously scandalous memoirs in French, the 18th century’s most rakish adventurer, Giacomo Casanova, was in fact Venetian. The cornucopia that is IGT/IGP includes wines that explore such techniques as appassimento and ripasso with international grapes, and, similarly to what the now-famous Super Tuscans did for Tuscany, offers Venetian winemakers a wide-open canvas on which to create brilliant new strokes of genius. When you think of Italy you tend to think pasta. In Veneto, however, rice (for risotto) and corn (for polenta) are the region’s staple kernels. 6 VINTAGES 23366_02 to 11_EN_Layout 1 15-03-06 1:15 AM Page 7 MOUNTAINS Like much of northern Italy, Veneto is rippled with mountains. Nearly a third of its surface area is mountainous, with the Carnic Alps, eastern Dolomites and Venetian Prealps all contributing to that figure. NATURE Veneto is rich with forests and ocean shorelines, and even has naturalist beaches – as opposed to naturist beaches, which it does also offer at Lido di Venezia – such as Alberoni Beach, which is situated within a nature reserve. ORTO BOTANICO LAKE GARDA The world’s oldest academic botanical garden, Orto Botanico di Padova dates back to 1545 and is a meeting place of stunning natural and architectural beauty. The largest lake in Italy, the picturesque, mountainencircled Lake Garda is known for its stunning views in addition to its moderating effect on the nearby Venetian vineyards. LA JARA BRUT PROSECCO P DOC PROSECCO Italy’s most famous sparkling wine, Prosecco, and the signature grape that shares its name call Veneto home. R RECIOTO The original appassimento wine, Recioto is made entirely with grapes raisinated by air drying. It can range from moderately to lusciously sweet and, depending on where it falls on the sweetness spectrum, pair beautifully with richly spiced cuisine, rich or blue cheeses, or desserts. MONTE FAUSTINO RECIOTO DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2008 DOCG TASTING NOTE: Lightly sweet, yet creamy and light on its feet, this offers fine balance and a pleasing array of dried plum, coffee, almond and ground spice notes. MONTRESOR SOAVE CLASSICO 2013 DOP TASTING NOTE: This is Soave Classico – which is grown in the hilly heart of the region – in fine form. Hazelnut and a hint of hay bale join ripe apple and pear fruit aromas here. Melon and citrus make appearances, too. A brilliant rush of acidity shapes the palate all the way to the nutty finish. Valpolicella, Valpolicella Classico and Valpolicella Valpantena are appellations for dry red wines made from fresh grapes; Amarone della Valpolicella and Recioto della Valpolicella are appellations for red wines that use dried grapes. FEUDI SAN PIO RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE 2012 DOC WHITE ASPARAGUS The white asparagus of Cimadolmo has been recognized with its own PGI (protected geographical indication) as an important agricultural product of Veneto. It’s a popular ingredient in the local risotto and a fine pairing with the local white wines. 10 VINTAGES Ripassos have become exponentially more popular in the last few decades, in tandem with the meteoric rise of Amarone. Expect this example to deliver a rich and complex nose with layers of dried berries, toast, coffee, chocolate and vanilla. A great value, and a big wine for the price. Enjoy this with marinara pasta. STEFANO ACCORDINI ACINATICO RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE 2012 DOC The ‘Classico’ in the name here means the grapes were grown in the historic heart of the Valpolicella region, while ‘Superiore’ signifies the wine has been aged at least a year before release. Look for aromas and flavours of rich cherry and spice, and pair it with flavourful meats and cheeses. It’s lively in the mouth with plenty of red fruit – cherry, raspberry, pomegranate – gently accentuated by spices. Enjoy it with cured meats or a mushroom risotto. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2015) Medium-bodied & Fruity 991984 (D) $21.95 2 750 mL 21347 Vin.Apr4_Veneto_Layout 1 15-03-03 3:23 AM Page 11 X-MEN? YESTERDAY’S AMARONE Alright, so there are no X-men in Veneto (that we know of). There is, however, talk about mutations as concerns the Corvina grape and its relative Corvinone. It was once thought the latter was a clone of the former, though genetic testing has disproved that notion. In making Ripasso, winemakers take the pressed grape skins from the process of making Amarone and use them to kick-start a second fermentation in their dry red Valpolicella wine, thereby adding layers of richness and complexity. Z ZENATO The Zenatos are one of Veneto’s most famed winemaking families. Their red wines from Valpolicella are incredibly popular, and they are also among the leaders in bringing the robust white wines of the neighbouring Lugana appellation to prominence. ZENATO VALPOLICELLA SUPERIORE 2012 ZENATO SAN BENEDETTO LUGANA 2013 DOC DOC TASTING NOTE: Here’s a big, robust take on Valpolicella. The rich, plummy nose offers layers of dark cherry, fig and cocoa powder. The palate is gushing with ripe fruit, with accents of cocoa spice and leather adding intrigue. Tangy acidity gives lift on the finish. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2015) TASTING NOTE: Seductively demure aromas of orchard blossoms, freshly cut hay, and apple-peach cobbler. There’s a suggestion of sweetness and plenty of flavour on the palate, with applesauce on the outset leading to crunchy, crisp apple riding the knife-edge acidity of the tangy finish. Aromatic & Flavourful 413617 (S) 500 mL $15.95 1 New at V INTAGES smoked HAM LAMB SALMON ROSÉ – The sweet edge to the fruit in rosé acts as the perfect counterpoint to the ham’s saltiness. VIOGNIER – Has the softness and rich texture to deliciously play off ham’s saltiness. SYRAH – Syrah’s rich fruit enhances the more subtle flavours of the ham, while the spice accentuates the smoky tones. SYRAH – The subtle element of game in lamb’s flavour matches exquisitely with the meaty and leathery notes often found in Syrah. MERLOT – Merlot’s spice and mocha notes are a natural complement to the savoury flavours of lamb. PINOT GRIS – The lively acidity in Pinot Gris cuts through the salmon’s richness, while the fruit layers additional complexity onto the fish’s flavour. ROSÉ – Freshness and expressive fruit are fundamental to rosé’s food-friendly reputation, and the slightly sweet edge is a nice foil to salmon’s salty tones. VIOGNIER – Richness, weight, texture and vibrancy combine to keep pace with turkey with all the trimmings. roast TURKEY ROSÉ – Rosé is exceptionally versatile with food, in part as the bright fruit flavours offer a nice contrast to a meal’s more flavourful components. MERLOT – Pleasing acidity, soft tannins, ripe fruit and touches of mocha and spice match well with dark and white meat as well as root vegetables. roast BEEF DESSERT SYRAH – Big fruit flavours call for bigflavoured food, so roast beef is an ideal partner for Syrah. MERLOT – Gives you the structure and depth of dark berry flavour to stand up to the heft of the beef, while the smoky undertones accentuate the broader flavours of the meat. LATE HARVEST VIDAL – This wine’s natural sweetness and notably high acidity make it an ideal match for sweeter desserts, from cheesecakes to fruit tarts to panna cotta. 23366_One_16 to 44_EN_ENGLISH 15-03-06 4:29 AM Page 16 LOCAL FIND I love it because... An insider’s guide to great Ontario wines. Astrid Brummer, Ontario Wine Buyer Gold in Them Hills One of the great things about Chardonnay is that it’s so adaptable to a spectrum of styles – from lean and crisp to sunny and round – depending on where it’s grown. This wine is grown in the limestonedotted heavy clay soils of Short Hills Bench, one of the warmest spots in cool-climate Niagara, and it’s got that perfect combination of refreshment and richness that I just adore in Chardonnay. If you like to serve turkey dinner at Easter, pour a glass of this wine with it and you’ll be golden. (La Madriere was one among several Fleurie sources in the earlier history of PotelAviron.) Blueberry tinged with mint, buddleia and freesia inform a high-toned nose and infectiously juicy, sleek palate, with underlying suggestions of wet stone serving to set off the pure fruit and evocative floral notes while a streak of salinity serves for saliva and next-sip inducement. The 2008 stands out for its impeccable balance and layered, highly expressive personality. A translucent, mid-weight, silky finish is totally striking. A firm backbone of tannin lends support as the 2011 opens up in the glass. Sweet red cherry, raspberry, spice and floral notes emerge, but only with great reluctance. For a vintage that yielded so many open, radiant wines, the 2011 Ser Lapo is quite reticent at this stage. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2011 for at least another 2-3 years. This is a pretty solid Arinto. The winery in fact has been consistently doing a nice job with them. It usually is my favorite of their selections – or at least tied for first. So, too, this year. It is not a big boy, perhaps, but a wine that nonetheless feels substantial in the mouth for this region and well-focused.
