This crowd-pleaser consistently offers the purity
of cassis and depth of ripe black fruit that most
readily define Californian Cabernet. Add to this
the delectable toast and spice aromas, not to
mention the structure, balance and firm tannin,
and it’s easy to see why this is considered
such a great value. Will shine alongside lamb.

NORTHERN ITALY’s revered
region is home to everything to
delight the aesthete, not least
its amazing array of wines.
irthplace of beloved artists, architecture and cuisine,
Veneto is also home to classic wine grapes, styles and
techniques. Equipped with such innovations as the
appassimento method of winemaking with dried grapes,
Veneto’s vintners have created wines to suit every occasion and every palate. In modern-day Veneto, the innovation continues, with producers seeking new sites outside
the more traditional appellations and making outstanding
and unconventional wines under the IGT/IGP banner to
add even more depth and nuance to the region’s stable of wines. With all this to choose
from, it’s no wonder foodies turn to Veneto for wines to complement a fantastic range
of dishes, from Asiago cheese to zucchini risotto. Here’s an alphabetizer to get you
started learning the language of Veneto and its wines.

TASTING NOTE: The 2009 Amarone

Cariano shows tight lines and an inner
elegance that you don’t always see
with air-dried fruit. Crisp contours of
berry fruit, cassis and caramelized
brown sugar give it direction and purpose. Fresh accents of cherry and
purple fruit add playful accents on the
close. Drink 2015-2022. Score: 91

DRYING GRAPES
Called ‘appassimento’ or ‘passito,’
the technique of drying grapes
in open air is used to create such
classic Venetian wine styles as
Amarone and Recioto.
DONATONI MASSENÀ APPASSIMENTO 2011
Uve Leggermente Appassite, IGT Rosso Veneto
The 2014 Gambero Rosso guide awarded this wine
BBM, denoting a rating of Very Good to Excellent.
TASTING NOTE: Made with partially dried grapes,
this massively generous, flavour-drenched wine
offers complex notions of plum sauce, dark cherry,
espresso, chili-infused dark chocolate and a hint
of caramelized sugar. The long, coffee-and-chocolate
finish is spicy and dynamic. Absolutely superb
value. (V INTAGES panel, Feb. 2015)

IGT/IGP
Exciting things are happening in Veneto
under the label of IGT and IGP (Indicazione
geografica tipica/protetta, respectively),
classifications that allow intrepid vintners to
mix things up outside the firmly established
boundaries of traditional wine styles and
vineyards. The cornucopia that is IGT/IGP
includes wines that explore such techniques
as appassimento and ripasso with international grapes, and, similarly to what the
now-famous Super Tuscans did for Tuscany,
offers Venetian winemakers a wide-open
canvas on which to create brilliant new
strokes of genius.

JESOLO
KERNELS
One of the most famous seaside resort towns in Italy, Jesolo,
with its super-popular sandy
beaches, draws tourists from
around the globe.
When you think of Italy you
tend to think pasta. In Veneto,
however, rice (for risotto)
and corn (for polenta) are the
region’s staple kernels.

MOUNTAINS
Like much of northern Italy,
Veneto is rippled with mountains. Nearly a third of its
surface area is mountainous,
with the Carnic Alps, eastern
Dolomites and Venetian
Prealps all contributing to
that figure.
NATURE
Veneto is rich with forests
and ocean shorelines, and even
has naturalist beaches – as
opposed to naturist beaches,
which it does also offer at Lido
di Venezia – such as Alberoni
Beach, which is situated within a nature reserve.
ORTO BOTANICO
LAKE GARDA
The world’s oldest academic
botanical garden, Orto
Botanico di Padova dates
back to 1545 and is a meeting place of stunning natural
and architectural beauty.
The largest lake in Italy, the picturesque, mountainencircled Lake Garda is known for its stunning views
in addition to its moderating effect on the nearby
Venetian vineyards.

VALPOLICELLA
Veneto’s most ubiquitous
red wine, Valpolicella, is
made primarily from Corvina
with other regional grapes
in support. Valpolicella,
Valpolicella Classico and
Valpolicella Valpantena
are appellations for dry red
wines made from fresh
grapes; Amarone della
Valpolicella and Recioto
della Valpolicella are appellations for red wines that
use dried grapes.

X-MEN?
YESTERDAY’S AMARONE
Alright, so there are no X-men in Veneto (that
we know of). There is, however, talk about
mutations as concerns the Corvina grape and
its relative Corvinone. It was once thought
the latter was a clone of the former, though
genetic testing has disproved that notion.
In making Ripasso, winemakers take the
pressed grape skins from the process of
making Amarone and use them to kick-start
a second fermentation in their dry red
Valpolicella wine, thereby adding layers of
richness and complexity.
Z
ZENATO
The Zenatos are one
of Veneto’s most famed
winemaking families.
Their red wines from
Valpolicella are incredibly
popular, and they are also
among the leaders in
bringing the robust white
wines of the neighbouring Lugana appellation
to prominence.

intrigue. Tangy acidity gives lift

freshly cut hay, and apple-peach

HAM
LAMB
SALMON
ROSÉ – The sweet edge to the fruit in
rosé acts as the perfect counterpoint to the
ham’s saltiness.
VIOGNIER – Has the softness and rich
texture to deliciously play off ham’s saltiness.
SYRAH – Syrah’s rich fruit enhances
the more subtle flavours of the ham, while
the spice accentuates the smoky tones.
SYRAH – The subtle element of game
in lamb’s flavour matches exquisitely with
the meaty and leathery notes often found
in Syrah.
MERLOT – Merlot’s spice and mocha
notes are a natural complement to the
savoury flavours of lamb.
PINOT GRIS – The lively acidity in Pinot
Gris cuts through the salmon’s richness,
while the fruit layers additional complexity
onto the fish’s flavour.
ROSÉ – Freshness and expressive fruit
are fundamental to rosé’s food-friendly
reputation, and the slightly sweet edge is a
nice foil to salmon’s salty tones.
VIOGNIER – Richness, weight, texture
and vibrancy combine to keep pace with
turkey with all the trimmings.
roast
TURKEY
ROSÉ – Rosé is exceptionally versatile with
food, in part as the bright fruit flavours offer
a nice contrast to a meal’s more flavourful
components.
MERLOT – Pleasing acidity, soft tannins,
ripe fruit and touches of mocha and spice
match well with dark and white meat as
well as root vegetables.
roast
BEEF
DESSERT
SYRAH – Big fruit flavours call for bigflavoured food, so roast beef is an ideal
partner for Syrah.
MERLOT – Gives you the structure and
depth of dark berry flavour to stand up to the
heft of the beef, while the smoky undertones
accentuate the broader flavours of the meat.
LATE HARVEST VIDAL – This wine’s
natural sweetness and notably high
acidity make it an ideal match for sweeter
desserts, from cheesecakes to fruit tarts
to panna cotta.

several other white grape varieties and offers up
a cornucopia of orchard and tropical fruits, floral
and grassy notes and garden veggies. Lightly
chill (the wine, that is – though come to think of
it, you’re quite likely to feel relaxed while sipping
this little beauty) and pair with seafood, turkey
breast or green salads.

well, which affects the way the vines develop.

GRAY MONK UNWOODED
CHARDONNAY 2013
BC VQA Okanagan Valley
TASTING NOTE: Sunlight is the key to this ripe
Chardonnay, snatched from vines that grow on the
most easterly of the Niagara Escarpment’s subappellation. Here Henry of Pelham calmly puts
its hegemony over Short Hills Bench Chardonnay
on display. The fruit layering is very impressive,
compressed even, with just a spiced spirit injection
from the barrel. The Estate Chardonnay is in a midrange class of its own, this gatherer of heat days,
hoarder in spring water retention, cleanser in sand
and gravel drainage. The vintage just seems perfect
for this niche bottling, balanced, primed to finespun
texture, stretched for length and good to age at
least five years. Tasted December 2014. Score: 90

From one of the oldest estate wineries in BC, this
unwooded Chard offers up sunny orchard fruit,

TASTING NOTE: The prototypical Marlborough
Sauvignon Blanc hitting all the classic numbers
is right here in the Dog Point 2014. Low pH, high
acidity, minuscule residual sugar and elevated
aromatics. It’s ripe but ripped by citrus juice and
zest. Like cubes of honeydew, bitter winter melon
and dried lemongrass soaking in and flavouring a
dish of briny scallop carpaccio with coarse sea salt
and capers. The sapidity is palpable, the excesses
vivid. I would avoid too much variegated gastronomy when sipping this wine. Opt for simpler fare

level is so low with so much flavour here, but yay!
Try this with fresh seafood or shellfish to keep the

grapes that went into this New Zealand white wine
were grown in vineyards with excellent drainage
along the Wairau River where gravel soils dominate.

TASTING NOTE: The 2011 Chianti Classico
Riserva Ser Lapo is dark, fleshy and expressive. A
firm backbone of tannin lends support as the 2011
opens up in the glass. Sweet red cherry, raspberry,
spice and floral notes emerge, but only with great
reluctance. For a vintage that yielded so many
open, radiant wines, the 2011 Ser Lapo is quite
reticent at this stage. Readers should plan on
cellaring the 2011 for at least another 2-3 years. It
will be interesting to see what time brings. Drinking

TASTING NOTE: The 2013 Arinto Colheita
Seleccionada comes in at 12.5% alcohol, with
4.5 grams per liter of residual sugar, just a touch
over legally dry – you won’t notice – and drier
than last year. This is a pretty solid Arinto. The
winery in fact has been consistently doing a nice
job with them. It usually is my favorite of their
selections – or at least tied for first. So, too, this
year. It is not a big boy, perhaps, but a wine that
nonetheless feels substantial in the mouth for this
region and well-focused. This resolves into a
pretty typical table wine, as opposed to very fizzy
Vinho Verde, that should drink well and make
everyone happy, from casual picnic drinkers to
geeks. It may well last longer, but drink it fresh

DO Ribera Del Duero
TASTING NOTE: This is smooth and ripe, with
its tannins rounded within the black fruit flavor.
Having aged in French oak, it has a vanilla
essence that details the ripe blackberry note. Best
Buy. Score: 90 (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast,
Oct. 2012)
TASTING NOTE: … from a vineyard situated
adjacent to one of the famous vineyards utilized
to produce Spain’s greatest red wine, Vega Sicilia
… the 2012 Pruno is a sexy, opulent, voluptuously
textured effort that spent 12 months in two-yearold French oak barrels. Reminiscent of a baby
Vega Sicilia, it possesses a dense ruby/purple
color as well as notes of high-class, unsmoked
cigar tobacco, creme de cassis, licorice, graphite
and spice box. Full-bodied, deep, velvety textured,
lush and heady, at [USD] $20 a bottle, it is
another sensational bargain from Eric Solomon.
Enjoy it over the next 5-6 years. Score: 93 (Robert
Parker Jr., erobertparker.com, June 2014)

ROMANIA – WHITE WINE
LIVIA SARBA 2013
DOC-CMD Cotesti
(Crama Girboiu)
MASPERLA 2009
DOCa Priorat
TASTING NOTE: Made from 100% Sarba, a cross
between Romania’s Tămâioasă Românească and
Riesling that was created in the 1970s, this has
intensely aromatic notes of peach, orange and
spice with a mineral frame. The complexity of the
nose is taken up nicely by the palate. Dry, lovely,
crisp and mineral-edged, with good length and
an impressive finish. (VINTAGES panel, June 2014)
Aromatic & Flavourful
396424 (D)
750 mL $14.95
2
TASTING NOTE: … 47% Garnacha and 30%
Carinena, augmented by Bordeaux varieties …
vinified by oenologist Gilles Pauquet, one of the
most respected consultants of the Right Bank …
It has a well-defined, very pure bouquet with
red cherries, lavender and violets that is very
delineated and controlled. The palate is balanced
with the new oak subsumed into the fabric of
ripe blackberry, bilberry and cocoa. Rich, but not
overpowering, this should age with style over the
next decade. Drink now-2025. Score: 90 (Neal
Martin, erobertparker.com, April 2012)
Medium-bodied & Fruity

750 mL $25.95
SPAIN – WHITE WINE
TASTING NOTE: Floral aromas with citrus and
peach tones and a nicely defined mineral note.
Refreshing, with pear standing out mid-palate
and a citrus peel note emerging on the finish.
This will be great with crab, or give it a try with
butternut squash and feta salad. (VINTAGES panel,
June 2014)
1
TASTING NOTE: … this evolved, balanced wine
was aged two years in oak and held three years
in bottle prior to release. It’s opaque, with spicy
fruit aromas, notes of vanilla and a whiff of
leather. There’s great depth of ripe fruit flavour,
notions of sweet baking spice and a remarkably
fresh texture to this dry, full-bodied red. It
retains good structure, flavour and depth of fruit
flavour through the long dry finish. Enjoy with
paella. Score: HHHHJ (Susan Desjardins,
winecurrent.com, Feb. 11, 2014)

with the Best in Show
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s champion breed;
the grape that captured the attention of the wine world’s most
demanding judges and catapulted Kiwi wines to the fore. This fine
pedigree shows through in every facet of this 90-point winner.
Intensely aromatic, perfectly poised, rich and lively, with distinguished
citrus and tropical fruit flavours, it’s a mouth-watering and
authentic thoroughbred.
