greetings,
This Community Report acknowledges the
generosity of our donors and contributors,
members and patrons. With your help, we
are able to offer meaningful opportunities to
engage with art, and we are grateful.
Although the Nashville skyline changed in
2013 with the opening of the Music City Center,
there was an outpouring of civic pride in the
architectural splendor of the Frist Center, a
former U.S. post office repurposed as an art
center in 2001. Our historic 1934 building was
the perfect setting for the summer exhibition
Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, which
was attended by more than 114,000 visitors.
Also, Vik Muniz: Garbage Matters and Jack
Spencer: Beyond the Surface were on view
during the summer months. Many first-time
visitors and others had not been in the building
since it was a post office. All agreed that the
building was a work of art. Attendance for
the year was almost 250,000, confirming the
appreciation for the 2013 exhibitions.
Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age:
Highlights from the Detroit Institute of Arts
and Camille Utterback: Tracing Time/Marking
Movement opened in February. Exploring Art
of the Ancient Americas: The John Bourne
Collection (a promised gift to The Walters
Art Museum) opened in March. In the fall,
we opened 30 Americans, Ana Maria Tavares:
Deviating Utopias and American Chronicles:
The Art of Norman Rockwell. Outdoor sculptures
included Will Ryman’s Rose on 65th Street,
on view on the Broadway terrace, and Rachel
Owens’s Inveterate Composition for Clare, on
view outside the Turner Courtyard. Carrie Mae
Weems: Three Decades of Photography and
Video, which was organized by the Frist Center,
traveled to the Portland Art Museum, the
Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cantor
Center for the Visual Arts at Stanford University.
Our ongoing partnership with Nashville Public
Television, ArtQuest: Art Is All Around You,
broadcast fifteen new one-minute episodes.
Children and their families are encouraged
to visit www.fristkids.org for additional art
activities and online resources. Teacher lesson
plans are also available here. In this report you
will learn about many other programs offered
to visitors and the community.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to
thank each of you for being a part of our mission
and for your generous support for the Frist Center.
Sincerely,
Attendance for the

Friends,
In 2013, we saw the opening of the Music City
Center, an architectural achievement as
well as a civic investment. As the skyline of
downtown Nashville takes on new dimensions,
we paused this year to celebrate our beautiful
historic building and the architecture of the
twentieth century. The presentation of Sensuous
Steel: Art Deco Automobiles drew many
first-time visitors inside the Frist Center.
The responses to the building, especially
in the context of automobile design of the
same vintage, were overwhelmingly admiring.
In the summer, we hosted our first Art Deco
Affair, the proceeds of which support the
ongoing care and maintenance of the building,
which is the property of the Metropolitan
Development Housing Agency.
Within this report, you will see a synopsis of
the exhibitions, education programs, community
engagement initiatives, and our critical
successes as noted in the media. We hope
the offerings of the Frist have provided you,
our members and visitors, with unexpected
connections and stimulating conversations.
Thanks to the generosity of the donors
acknowledged in this report, the Frist Center
continues to flourish, sustained not only by
financial gifts but also by donated time and
talent. Our gratitude extends to trustees,
sponsors, foundations, government agencies,
members, volunteers, community partners,
visitors, and our hard-working, loyal staff.
In 2013, we must acknowledge in particular
those volunteers who chaired major fund-raising
events: Ashley Levi and Dallas Wilt, Gala Co-Chairs;
Kathy and Mike Dorr, Mollie Lehner and Jeff
Reed, and DeeDee Wade, Co-Chairs of the
Art Deco Affair. Their efforts on behalf of this
institution are appreciated beyond measure.
With each story of a path changed, an idea
revealed, or a window opened, we rededicate
ourselves to providing Middle Tennessee with
a place for visitors to see, learn, and interact
with art. We are grateful to our 2013 donors
for their generosity and for their affirmation
of our mission and vision.
...the Frist Center
I would like to take this opportunity to ask for
your continued support. We pledge responsible
stewardship and our full dedication to the
mission and vision of presenting exhibitions
and educational and community engagement
programming that will change the way people
see their world through art.
flourish,
We hope that when you visit the Frist, you
find the experience you seek. Please join us
as often as you can.

In 2013, a combination of
historical and contemporary
art, design, and illustration
enabled viewers to appreciate
the beauty and cultural
significance that can be found
threaded among the many types
of expressions that enliven our
daily experiences, within and
outside of art venues.
Exhibitions Overview
The year’s first exhibition, Rembrandt and the
Dutch Golden Age: Highlights from the Detroit
Institute of Arts, celebrated one of the most
fertile and accomplished periods in the history
of painting. While magnificent examples of still
lifes, portraits, genre scenes, and landscapes
convey the values and pleasures of seventeenthcentury life, they also inspire us to appreciate
the materials, people, and views of our own
time. The great art of the past thus links us
to history writ large, while establishing a
connection between viewer and maker that
is uniquely personal; we see through an
artist’s eyes.
Art’s existence as both artifact and intangible
expression was again in evidence in Exploring
Art of the Ancient Americas: The John Bourne
Collection. Objects for which the function is
familiar—vessels, for example—may also have a
Installation view of Carrie Mae Weems: Three

mystical meaning that is wholly beyond contemporary
frames of reference. While an expert may enrich
our understanding of this context, it is often an
inexplicable sense of potency or the achievement
of an otherworldly beauty that remains the most
memorable aspect of an artwork. This was also
the message of the exhibition Jack Spencer:
Beyond the Surface, which featured photographs
in which a dance between clarity and dissolution
emphasized the value of feeling over knowing,
becoming over being.
Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles married
intuitive form and effective function—design
and physics— to offer insight into the social,
aesthetic, and industrial aspirations of a pivotal
moment in our history. The exhibition featured
eighteen automobiles and two motorcycles
produced between the late 1920s and 1941, a
period that spanned the Roaring Twenties and
the Great Depression and ended with America’s
entrance into World War II. Astonished by the
cars’ exuberant lines, luxurious materials, and
ornamental details, many visitors came away
from the exhibition with a new appreciation for
great design, which today is often less concerned
with expressiveness than with practicality.
American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell
similarly inspired a consideration of the role of
functional art—in this case, illustration—in
creating and reflecting an aesthetic identity for
a broad swath of our society. Whether Rockwell
should be considered as an artist of the first
rank or simply as an extraordinary illustrator,
his consummate technique, ability to tell a story
in a gesture, pose, or glance, and overriding
optimism about American life have earned him
recognition as an important and influential image
maker of the twentieth century.
c o m m u n it y r e p o rt 2 013 | i n s p i r e
Exhibitions
On view concurrently with Norman Rockwell’s artwork, 30 Americans
gave a vibrant cross-section of the works of leading contemporary
artists. While all the artists in the exhibition are African American,
the exhibition was not only about race, but was also concerned with
personal identity and taste, sexuality and gender, issues of beauty
and fashion, and the role of history in defining present day beliefs.
10
The Frist Center continued to present the art of the twenty-first
century with exhibitions in the Gordon Contemporary Artists Project
Gallery of the works of Camille Utterback, Vik Muniz, and Ana
Maria Tavares. Each of these artists thoughtfully reflected on the
interaction of aesthetics with an increasingly global society.
Installations by Utterback and Tavares invited viewers to investigate
connections between their own bodies and new technologies,
while Muniz’s Garbage Matters established surprising links between
social classes in Brazil, the cycle of production and waste, and the
aesthetic and monetary values of art.
Finally, the retrospective Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades
of Photography and Video, organized by Frist Center Curator
Kathryn Delmez, traveled to the Portland Art Museum in Oregon,
the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cantor Center for the Visual
Arts at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. In 2014, the
exhibition concluded its tour at the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum in New York City.

Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age: Highlights
from the Detroit Institute of Arts
Ingram Gallery
February 1–May 19, 2013
11
This exhibition of Dutch Golden Age painting and decorative
arts came to the Frist Center from the Detroit Institute of Arts,
which has one of the finest collections of its kind outside the
Netherlands. Highlighted by masterpieces painted by such
well-known Dutch masters as Frans Hals and Rembrandt,
the exhibition featured an extraordinary selection of virtuosic
works, from insightful portraits and pastoral landscapes to
bawdy peasant scenes and magnificent still lifes.
This exhibition was organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Camille Utterback:
Tracing Time/Marking Movement
Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery
February 1–May 19, 2013
Since 1999, Camille Utterback has used video tracking
software and written computer code to create interactive
installations designed to question whether today’s advanced
technological interfaces diminish or expand such senses as
sight and touch. The works in this exhibition invited viewers
to project themselves into an arena in which they seemingly
altered time and space through physical gestures. Merging
drama and dance, participants individually and communally
brought expressions such as poetry, photography, and
abstract painting to life.
This exhibition was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
Rachel Owens:
Inveterate Composition for Clare
Sculpture, Demonbreun Street entrance
February 1, 2013–March 1, 2015
Inveterate Composition for Clare (2011) is composed of two
replica military Humvee shells, which have been dismantled
and reconstructed into a monumental, quasi-cubist form. The
rebuilt military vehicles suggest the fragmentation of war.
A stereo inside the angular, white sculpture plays songs of
humpback whales and crashes of glaciers. The installation
thus links human conflict and environmental vulnerability.
This exhibition was organized by the Frist Center for the
Visual Arts.
Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas:
The John Bourne Collection
Upper-Level Galleries
March 1–June 23, 2013
This exhibition featured 123 works made in Mesoamerica, Central
America, and Andean South America between 1200 BCE and
1530 CE. Included were extraordinary figural sculptures and
vessels from the Olmec, Aztec, Maya, and Moche cultures, as
well as Inca jewelry and textiles. The collection was compiled by
John Bourne, who in 1946 was among the first known non-Maya
to see the ruins of Bonampak, a mid-level Maya city in southern
Chiapas, Mexico. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Bourne
began collecting art from across the ancient Americas.
Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas: The John Bourne Collection
was organized by The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.

Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles
Ingram Gallery
June 14–September 15, 2013
Highlighting the Art Deco architecture of the Frist Center, Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles celebrated automobile design in France and the United States as it evolved from the
late 1920s until 1941. Featuring eighteen automobiles and two motorcycles, the exhibition conveyed the stunning beauty of the Art Deco style, seen in combinations of gentle curves
and angular edges which give the illusion of movement from repose to dramatic forward thrust. The cars’ classical lines were embellished by elegant features, from geometric grillwork
and plush interiors to the miniature statuary of hood ornaments.
This exhibition was organized by the Frist Center
for the Visual Arts with guest curator Ken Gross.

Vik Muniz: Garbage Matters
Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery
June 14–September 15, 2013

Abstractometry
Conte Community Arts Gallery
August 30, 2013–February 2, 2014
Brazilian artist Vik Muniz is renowned for his photographs of
everyday materials, arranged to reveal unexpected images
when viewed from a distance. This exhibition included
selections from the series’ Pictures of Junk (2005–09) and
Pictures of Garbage (2008), showing vast amounts of urban
detritus arrayed to mimic such masterpieces as Sandro
Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and Jacques-Louis David’s
The Death of Marat. By exploring the relationship between the timelessness of Western art and the
grim realities of poverty and waste, Muniz reminds us that beauty, humanistic values, and spiritual
aspiration can be found in the most abject of worlds.
This exhibition included eight Nashville-area artists—
Alex Blau, Patrick DeGuira, Warren Greene, Ronald Lambert,
James Perrin, Christopher Roberson, Terry Thacker, and
Amelia Winger-Bearskin—who explored the impact of
contemporary codes of technology, architecture, film, text,
and graphic design on our lives. The title merges the term
abstract—a synopsis of a larger idea—with the notion of
metrics; how we measure and are defined by our systems.
As with much abstract art, the works evince surprising
relationships between forms and sources of inspiration.
Vik Muniz: Garbage Matters was organized by the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
This exhibition was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
Jack Spencer: Beyond the Surface
Upper-Level Galleries
July 12–October 13, 2013
Nashville resident Jack Spencer alters the surfaces of his
photographs with techniques suggestive of painting: rich
tones and colors, softly-focused or veiled forms, and traces of
the artist’s hand—surface imperfections, marks, and painterly
textures. The exhibition was composed of seventy photographs,
from such series as Native Soil (1994–98), Apariciones (2000–06),
This Land (2002–07), and the recent Gestures & Portraits, that
conveyed Spencer’s interest in myth, mystery, and the ephemeral
nature of existence beyond and beneath the surface.
30 Americans
Ingram Gallery
October 11, 2013–January 12, 2014
30 Americans was a selection of works by many of the most
important African American artists of the last three decades.
Drawn from the Rubell Family Collection, the exhibition brought
together seminal figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kerry
James Marshall, and David Hammons as well as emerging artists
such as Hank Willis Thomas, Kehinde Wiley, and Mickalene
Thomas. Often provocative and challenging, 30 Americans focused
on issues of race, sexuality, and black identity in America. At the
same time, it highlighted artistic legacy and influence, tracing
subject matter and formal strategies across generations.
Jack Spencer: Beyond the Surface was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.

Ana Maria Tavares: Deviating Utopias
Gordon Contemporary Artists Project Gallery
October 11, 2013–January 12, 2014
14
Brazilian artist Ana Maria Tavares finds inspiration in the architecture of the modern city, particularly
the utopian modernist architects who have transformed urban Brazil in the post World War II years.
Airports and departure lounges—places that symbolize exit from everyday life—are recurrent themes
in her work, evoking feelings of floating and meditating, as well as the co-existence of the real and
virtual. The exhibition’s centerpiece was the four-sided immersive video, Airshaft (to Piranesi) (2008),
comprising sequences of elaborate interiors as seen from multiple perspectives in constant motion.
A sonic component was created for this installation by Nashville composer Brian Siskind.
Ana Maria Tavares: Deviating Utopias was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.
American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell
Upper-Level Galleries
November 1, 2013–February 9, 2014
For more than six decades, Norman Rockwell was the leading illustrator in the United States. He
depicted scenes of American life for advertisements, calendars, Christmas cards, and the covers and
pages of prominent publications, including Boy’s Life, Ladies’ Home Journal, and the Saturday Evening
Post. Rockwell portrayed scenes of human triumph and frailty with humor, dignity, and kindness,
while emphasizing the importance of tolerance and America’s democratic ideals. Established during
sixty-five years of painting, his artistic legacy constitutes a chronicle of twentieth-century American
life and aspirations that has profoundly influenced our own perceptions and ideals.
American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell was organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum
in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Interpretation and Public Programs
Participants of all ages were invited to find
deeper understanding and personal connections
with the works of art through diverse programs
and activities. Programs for Exploring Art of
the Ancient Americas: The John Bourne
Collection were offered in partnership with
the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS)
at Vanderbilt University. Highlights include a
lecture by Dr. Arthur Demarest, noted Maya
archaeologist from Vanderbilt University,
and a special five course dinner prepared by
the Frist Center staff with menu direction by
Marieke Sattler, linguistic anthropologist from
Vanderbilt University.
The Art of Beer programs connected the history
of beer with the exhibitions Rembrandt
and the Dutch Golden Age: Highlights from
the Detroit Institute of Arts and American

The program featured local breweries
including Fat Bottom, Jackalope, and Yazoo.
Programs related to Sensuous Steel: Art Deco
Automobiles attracted new audiences to the
Frist Center to learn about the art of Art Deco
cars and our building. The program “Curator
and Collectors’ Perspectives: Behind the
Headlights” brought over 260 visitors to hear
a panel that included guest curator Ken Gross,
Richard Adatto, automotive historian and
exhibition catalogue contributor, Peter Mullin
of the Mullin Collection, Mullin Automotive
Museum and Foundation and exhibition
lender and Jeff Lane, president of Lane Motor
Museum and exhibition lender. Another popular
program was the weekly Architecture Tour
that reached 548 guests during the year and
especially connected the exhibition with the
Frist Center’s Art Deco building.
In partnership with Vanderbilt University’s

American Artists and Norman Rockwell” was a new
three-part lecture series presented by Vanderbilt
professors and Frist Center staff that addressed
what it means to be an American today. This series
built challenging intellectual connections to the
exhibitions 30 Americans and American Chronicles.
17
Youth and family activities included the on-going
monthly storytelling program “Artful Tales” and two
free Family Days where visitors experienced hands-on
art making, group poetry, music, and dance; all inspired
by our exhibitions. Summer Art Camp finished at 99%
capacity with twenty students receiving free registration
through the support of the William N. Rollins Fund
for the Arts of The Community Foundation of Middle
Tennessee. A special family workshop, “A Norman
Rockwell Christmas,” was offered in December in
celebration of the holiday season and the Rockwell
exhibition. Families created traditional holiday
ornaments together and visited with Santa.
In addition, “MAQ Attack!” began in November
as a new monthly teen program. Youths were
invited to explore the exhibition-related art-making
activities in the Martin ArtQuest® Gallery and
through various artistic media, including poetry,
music, dance, and the visual arts. The program
also provided teens with a safe place for social
interaction with their peers.
New adult workshop: Drop-in Drawing began in October;
a workshop participant in the exhibition 30 Americans
In response to interest in adult art-making activities,
the new monthly program “Drop-in Drawing” began
in October. This in-gallery program facilitated by
educators inspired visitors to engage with the
artworks and our building through pencil and
paper. Adults were also offered a studio workshop,
“Capture Gesture: A Norman Rockwell Figure
Class.” Participants were guided through basic
drawing techniques and drew from both still-life
arrangements and live models in the studios and
the Upper-Level Galleries, with models posing
next to artwork.
Technology continued to be a means for visitors to
access exhibition interpretation. For the first time,
additional contextual material was offered through
QR codes in Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age.
The Frist Center app continues to reach visitors with
more information on the majority of the exhibitions.
Audio tours for adults were available for Rembrandt
and the Dutch Golden Age and Exploring Art of the
Ancient Americas; children’s and adults’ audio tours
were offered for Sensuous Steel and American
Chronicles. These audio resources were offered
onsite and online, and most were produced through
a continuing collaboration with Belmont University
and Ocean Way Recording Studios, Nashville.

ArtQuest: Art Is All Around You, created in
partnership with Nashville Public Television (NPT),
is now developing Season Two. Season One, with
fifteen one-minute episodes, began airing in early
2013. Children and their families are invited to visit
www.fristkids.org for related art activities and
suggested online resources. Teacher lesson plans
are also available here.
Community Engagement
Outreach and community engagement remain
cornerstones of the Frist Center’s mission. Staff
partnered with a diverse array of community partners
to engage new audiences and encourage an
understanding of art in all ages and abilities.
Frist Center educators continued working with
Middle Tennessee Down Syndrome Association
(DSAMT) summer camp. This year students created
Vik Muniz-inspired self-portraits which were
shown at the Frist Center. In addition, the Batten
Disease Support and Research Association invited
educators to include an art-making activity at their
national conference for the siblings of children
with the disease. Other community activities
ranged from the Alzheimer’s Program, offered
in collaboration with the Middle Tennessee
Alzheimer’s Association, and participation at a
variety of fairs and festivals that included Miss
Martha’s Ice Cream Crankin’, Endada Music and
Arts Festival at Montgomery Bell Academy,
Tennessee Arts and Crafts Association Fall Craft
Fair, Flatrock Music and Arts Festival, Dragon Boat
Festival with Chinese Arts Alliance, African Street
Festival, Celebrate Nashville with Metro Parks
and Recreation, Buddy Walk with Down Syndrome
Association of Middle Tennessee, and Hike for the
Homeless with Safe Haven Family Shelter.
Other initiatives included Project Access, an
ongoing program for adult English language
learners, held in partnership with the Tennessee
Foreign Language Institute. Refugees from Iran
and Myanmar developed art and English skills as
they learned about the elements of art, created
artwork, and wrote personal narratives.
The Art Trunk program reached over 1,300 participants
during the year. The Exploring Art of the Ancient
Americas trunk reached people of all ages at 20
community partner organizations. The combined
30 Americans and American Chronicles Art Trunk
reached participants at ten organizations by the
end of 2013 and will continue into January 2014.

Experiential Learning
Reaching educators and students, especially teens, continued
to be an important goal for the Frist Center. School system art
shows, with Metro Nashville Public Schools, Franklin Special
School Districts, Williamson County School, and Wilson
County Schools, continued to connect the Frist with students
and their families. In 2013, 3,873 families attended the five
exhibition receptions of students’ artwork on display in the
Upper-Level Education Corridor.
18
The Robert Churchwell Museum Magnet Elementary School
students participated in art programming during their Monday
Mix classes. Frist Center outreach educators field tested
activities and offered supplemental art programs for students.
Several new initiatives and partnerships were highlights of
the year. Two new programs targeted teens in support of
Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) intersession program.
“Nashville ArtWorks: Careers in the Cultural Arts” was a
collaboration with the Center for Nonprofit Management,
the Nashville Symphony, and the Country Music Hall of Fame
and Museum. MNPS high school students, from Nashville
School for the Arts, Hume-Fogg, Overton, Antioch, and
Cane Ridge High School, received an introduction to various
culturally-focused careers. Teens interested in exploring
art and technology worked with teaching artist Amelia
Winger-Bearskin in “ArtLab: Identity Project.” The fall ArtLab,
inspired by the exhibition 30 Americans, provided eighteen
students from across the region the opportunity to investigate
personal identity as it relates to gender, race, and history.
This program received grant support from the National
Endowment for the Arts and the Nissan Foundation.
Frist Center staff mentored students and teachers through
the Frist Antioch Community Exhibition (F.A.C.E) project.
Antioch students, as part of their project-based learning,
worked with different departments—exhibitions, education,
marketing, and design—to prepare and present their own
community art exhibition.

Stop. Take Notice! was an exhibition in the Conte Community
Arts Gallery that featured work by teens from four community
partners—the Nashville Public Library, Oasis Center, YMCA
Latino Achievers, and the Martha O’Bryan Center. Visitors to
the Frist Center were invited to respond and interact with these
works of art and share issues and concerns about their community
with other visitors. In addition, an international group of teens
participated in the Oasis Center Summer Program that focused
on creating a work of art in recognition of World Refugee Day
and in response to Vik Muniz: Garbage Matters. During a series
of six visits, the teens completed a service project and created
a work of art using trash and recyclable materials.
Special Event:

Conte Community Arts Gallery
April 26–August 25, 2013
Stop. Take Notice! was an exhibition of works inspired by contemporary
artist Carrie Mae Weems, who investigates complex topics such as history,
place, identity, race, and gender. Teen participants from the Martha O’ Bryan
Center, YMCA Latino Achievers, Main Library, and Oasis Center each worked
with teaching artists to create four interactive art pieces for the purpose of
engaging their neighbors and making them aware of issues relevant to their
communities. Each piece was re-created for the Conte Gallery and offered an
interactive experience for our visitors.

Social Media Engagement
...the Frist Center
Through a number of online outlets and social
media platforms, the Frist Center continued to
reach new audiences and foster a dialogue with
its current community members. In 2013, the Frist
Center reached 18,300 Facebook fans, 12,700
Twitter followers, and 825 followers on Pinterest.
This year, the Frist Center joined Instagram, a
continued to reach
photo sharing mobile application, and by year’s
end had 734 followers.
The Frist Center consistently used social media

Community Outreach
Community Relations
Programs
21
The goal of all community relations planning is to
engage diverse groups and make them feel welcome
at the Frist Center. This year, the Frist Center hosted
a number of performances to attract new audiences,
including Nashville in Harmony, a city chorus for LGBT
people and their friends and family members, and
Destellos Culturales de Nashville, an all-ages folkloric
ballet company, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Speakers Bureau
Affinity Days
The Frist Center Speakers Bureau has been active
since before the Frist Center opened. Members of
the staff and volunteers provide an array of interesting
programs for business, civic, church, senior, and
social organizations. In 2013, over 1,000 people
attended Frist Center Speakers Bureau presentations
to learn more about the institution and our
exhibitions and programs.
Affinity Days are days or periods of time that
organized groups are able to come to the Frist
Center free of charge. We work with civic and
social organizations, church groups, businesses,
and alumni groups to create these opportunities.
In 2013, approximately 200 visitors enjoyed free
admission through our Affinity Day program.
Senior Mondays
College Advisory
Committee
Each year, the Frist Center recruits enthusiastic students
to serve on the College Advisory Committee.
The 2013 College Advisory Committee members
represented eleven colleges and universities from
Middle Tennessee and beyond. Members of the
College Advisory Committee help shape activities
that appeal to college students as well as assist
in communicating information about exhibitions,
programs, and activities to their communities.
On Senior Mondays—the third Monday of each
month—the Frist Center offers half-price admission,
live music in the Grand Lobby, discounts in the Gift
Shop and special pricing in the Café to all willing to
claim their “senior” status. Working with FiftyForward
Senior Center, church groups, senior communities,
and assisted living facilities, the Frist Center is
proud to be a popular destination for seniors. In
2013, approximately 1,000 visitors attended our
eleven Senior Mondays. Although WAMB Radio
will no longer be a sponsor or broadcast live on
these days due to changes at the station, the Frist
Center is grateful for their years of support.
December’s holiday concert is a highlight
of the year’s Senior Mondays.
Gift Shop
Before and after visiting the galleries, the Frist
Center Gift Shop is often a “must-see” for Frist
Center guests. The exhibition-specific merchandise
changes weekly. Exhibition catalogues, reference
books, music, clothing, stationery, educational toys,
art-making supplies, and artisan-made jewelry
and crafts combine to create a unique shopping
environment. The Gift Shop staff works closely
with the exhibition staff and educators to enhance
the museum experience and offer patrons tangible
reminders of their visits.
Music at the Frist features a rich variety of performances.
Music at the Frist
Whether playing jazz, blues, classical, gospel,
bluegrass, Latin, Brazilian, Americana, Medieval,
or Renaissance music, Middle Tennessee’s
community of musicians continues to support the
Frist Center in meaningful ways. Throughout the
year (with the exception of the Frist Fridays concert
series), the Frist Center presents free live music
in the Frist Center Café each Thursday and Friday
evening with performances by generous local and
regional musicians and performance artists who
donate their time and talents. Visitors often stop
in to enjoy the music prior to attending films or
lectures. In 2013, the Frist Center recognized in-kind
donations from more than 100 artists from Middle
Tennessee and beyond. We are ever grateful to
the gifted newcomers, world renowned jazz artists,
spoken word performers, singer songwriters,
and critically acclaimed instrumentalists who
actively support and enhance the cultural
experience of the Frist Center.

2013 Frist Gala
38
The 2013 Frist Gala celebrated Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age: Highlights from the Detroit Institute of Arts on May 18.
Inspired by the exhibition, co-chairs Ashley Levi and Dallas Wilt, along with Gala designers Elizabeth James and Jeanette Whitson
created an experience of entering the seventeenth-century world depicted in the Dutch Master’s exquisite paintings. Guests enjoyed
cocktails, a seated dinner, and viewing of the exhibition followed by coffee and cordials in a “Motown Lounge”. This year’s attendees
also enjoyed surprise musical entertainment from Johnnyswim.
The 2013 Frist Gala raised funds for the Frist Center’s educational and outreach programming initiatives. We continue to extend our
thanks to Ashley Levi and Dallas Wilt, as well as the committee chairs and volunteers, for devoting their time and efforts to the Frist
Center. We also thank the generous patrons, members of the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Committees, Gala attendees, and all others
who contributed to this incredibly successful event.

An Art Deco Affair
46
An Art Deco Affair, held on Saturday, August 10, brought nearly 300 guests to the Frist Center for a night celebrating both the Art Deco
building in which the Frist Center is housed, as well as the exhibition Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles. Co-Chairs Kathy and Mike
Dorr, Mollie Lehner and Jeff Reed, and DeeDee Wade helped to plan this inaugural event that attracted many guests who had never
before visited the Frist Center. Guests were encouraged to dress as “flappers or dapper gents” to go along with the theme. Food was
provided by the Clean Plate Club and guests enjoyed live music from a jazz trio while they ate and danced. If guests chose to take a
break from the many festivities in the Grand Lobby, they could make their way into the Ingram Gallery for docent-led tours of Sensuous
Steel: Art Deco Automobiles. An Art Deco Affair will become an annual summer event at the Frist. Ticket sales from the event, along with
money raised from members of the Art Deco Society, will go toward the ongoing care of the historic building—the Frist Center’s only
permanent collection.
Special thanks to the following sponsors of An Art Deco Affair: Chubb Insurance, Nashville Lifestyles, NowPlayingNashville.com,
Olive & Sinclair Chocolate, Tennessee Brew Works, and The Bottle Shop.
Guests enjoy the galleries
during An Art Deco Affair.
