New Lower School Opens!
With the Grand Opening of the new
Lower School on Tuesday, August 18,
2009, Episcopal Collegiate welcomed
212 new Lower School students to
the family.

On September 2 and 3, the Episcopal
Collegiate Lower School hosted parties for
our donors and the community to celebrate
the first school year. With the help of the new
Lower School students, the Upper School
Broadcast Journalism class created a video
to thank donors and the community for their
support. The Capital Campaign donors were
recognized on September 2 by Harriet and
Warren Stephens, Foundation Board of
Directors President, and Board of Trustees
President Jeanne Joyner. The Capital
Campaign was chaired by Jeanne Joyner
and Harriet Stephens.

This year, Episcopal Collegiate recognized seven students as
National Merit Semi-Finalists, and one student as National
Merit Commended. CONGRATULATIONS!
National Honor Society Holiday
Cookie Decorating Contest...Sweet!

Academics
The National Honor Society Holiday Cookie Decorating Contest
for Lower School students was held in the Lower School cafeteria
on Thursday, Dec. 10. Sixth grade volunteers assisted with judging.
The winners were: Second Grade, Adrian Rogers; Third grade, Mary
Claire Briggs; Fourth Grade, Tie – Catherine Edwards and Jacob
Howard; Fifth Grade, Mallory Whitehead. The overall greatest
creative artistry was judged to be Catherine Edwards’ submission.
This year’s officers of the National Honor Society are Rachel
Garrett, President; Tim Dinehart, Peter Ketch and Michael Smith.
The faculty sponsor is Stan Whittlesey.
Quiz Bowl Update
The Quiz Bowl team competed against teams from all divisions
at two tournaments this past fall and brought home two trophies.
At West Memphis on October 31, the team won a third-place trophy
and on November 14 at Centerpoint High School in Amity we won
a fourth-place trophy. The team recently celebrated first-place and
second-place wins at a tournament in Pine Bluff, and is preparing
for tournaments in Mount Vernon-Enola,
Batesville, Morrilton, Fort Smith and the
Regional Tournament at England. This year’s
captain is senior Bess Rystrom. The sponsors
are Stan Whittlesey and Bruce Hall.
Our new Middle School Quiz Bowl team was
launched this past semester under the guidance
of sponsors Bobbie Waters and Ellen Waldon.
Their inaugural match was held at Mount
Vernon-Enola High School on January 16.
Episcopal
Collegiate
is now home
to a steel
drum band.
Their first full
performance
was in October.
Six students
from Middle
School made the
Junior High AllRegion Choir:
Alex Fletcher,
Therese Janosky,
Madison Lewis,
Jameson Miller,
Katie Mowery
and Dara Rowell.
Five students from Upper School made
All-Region Choir: Katie Cousins, Alex Geiger,
Charlie Gonzalez, Kelly Singer and Molly Anne Turner.
The Theatre Department
presented Agatha Christie’s
And Then There Were None
this past fall. Over thirty
students acted, constructed
the set or worked on
sound and lighting for
the production.
The Foundations of Art class
revived the old art form of
paper quilling and explored
using recycled boxes and
materials to create a 3-D
structure to demonstrate
their knowledge about an
artist they researched.
The Lower School
Wildcat Chorale, under
the direction of Karen
Clark and accompanied
by parent Libby Davis,
performed with Lawrence
Hamilton for the Garden
Club at the Country Club
of Little Rock.
Golf
Athletics
Volleyball
The Varsity Boys Golf Team won the Class
3A State Championship at The Course at Three
Oaks with a tournament score of 232. From left

Tennis
The Varsity Volleyball team finished their season
as Conference Champions. Emily Miros, Meghan
Miros, Erica Rogers, Nicole Soulsby and Melissa
Winter received All-Conference honors.
Football
For the second year in a row, our girls’ and boys’
Varsity Tennis teams were named Class 3A State
Champions. Senior Tim Dinehart and sophomore
Maggie Beetstra captured the boys’ and girls’
singles champion titles. Seniors Rachel Garrett
and Erica Rogers brought home their second
doubles championship as well.
The Wildcat football team enjoyed many successes
this season, including qualifying for the State 3A
playoffs. Congratulations on a great season!

Halloween Parade
Other Activities
Record Breaking Kickball!
Ghosts, cowpokes, princesses and witches,
even a Thing One and Thing Two prowled the halls of
the Lower School at our first annual Halloween Parade.
Kindergarten Buddies
For 36 straight hours over the weekend of August 1 – 2,
dedicated students played kickball in a world-record-breaking
tournament organized
by seniors Tim Dinehart,
Spencer Gregory and
Peter Ketch. The
participating students
received an official
Guinness World Record
certificate at a Chapel
ceremony on January 5.
Homecoming Tailgate Party
With the opening of the new Lower School
comes one of many new traditions: each senior has
“adopted” a Kindergarten student for the duration of
the school year. The adoption ceremony took place at
the Lower School and was followed by an ice cream
social in the courtyard.
Fall Festival
Lower School teacher Brannon Aaron

games and even a dunking booth!
On a chilly Friday evening
in October, over three
hundred students, families
and alumni attended a
Homecoming Celebration
and Tailgate party before
winning the game against
Brinkley. Homecoming
Court members, each
escorted by a parent, were
presented crowns and roses
by Head of School Steve
Hickman. Recent graduates
enjoyed the opportunity to
reconnect with friends and to
cheer for the home team.

Teachers have

and other forms
of technology
throughout the
curriculum in
the Middle and
Upper Schools.

Paxton Flesher is living
in Charlotte, NC as an
investment banker. He
graduated from the University
of Virginia in 2008 with an
engineering and economics double major and a
math minor. In June 2009 he received a Masters
Degree from UVA in finance.
Miles Stephens graduated from Dartmouth College
and joined the investment firm Hotchkis–Wiley in
Los Angeles.
Class of 2005
Stephanie Maxwell graduated from Millsaps
College with a BA in English and a minor in Greek.
She recently began the MBA program at Regent’s
College in London.
Justin Warren was recently
hired as the new Director
of Youth Ministries at First
United Methodist Church of
Little Rock. He graduated from
Hendrix in May of 2009 and
recently released his second album entitled
“Every Which Way.” You can view his website

Class of 2006
Chandler Blank spent the summer living in New
York City with Jane Anne Murphy ’06 while interning
at Lindsey Coral Harper Designs. She is an interior
design major at the University of Georgia
in Athens.
Elise Davis is a senior at
the University of Arkansas at
Fayetteville. She is working
on her fourth album, to be
released in January, and plans
to tour with her band after
she graduates. You can view her website

Class of 2007
Becca Fullen is a junior at the University of
Arkansas at Fayetteville majoring in pre-nursing.
While she is not studying, she works at the
University in the Office of Community Standards
and Student Ethics. Next year she plans to enter
nursing school to pursue a nursing degree.
David Liem is a student at
the United States Military
Academy at West Point.
He majors in defense and
strategic studies and
unconventional warfare.
His minor is environmental engineering. He joined
the Army in August and plans to become an infantry
platoon leader when he graduates in 2011.
Class of 2008
Clayton Erwin is a sophomore at Yale University in
New Haven, CT. This past summer he participated
in an eight-week program at Yale with four weeks
in Paris. He lived with a French family and attended
classes. His academic area of interest is
English literature.
Natalie Meadors is a
sophomore at Loyola
Marymount University in
Los Angeles. She majors in art
history and minors in studio
art. Some of her photographs
are on display at Stephano’s Art Gallery in Little
Rock. She also plays in a band, Mojo Stone.
Class of 2009
Blaiq Charles attends
the University of Central
Arkansas and plays in the
Conway Symphony Orchestra.
His major is music
performance and, when he
is not studying, he plays in the jazz band and has
created other bands with his peers.
Perry Waters attends Southern Methodist
University’s Lyle School of Engineering.
He majors in mechanical engineering and is
on a pre-med track. He also plans to minor in
math and business.

NEW! Alumni Parents
Association
A new group has formed! The Alumni Parents
Association is a fun group of Alumni parents who will
get together a few times each year to reconnect, to
stay in touch with Episcopal Collegiate, and to share
memories of the school and their children.
The first event was held on December 10, 2009.
A wonderful group of Alumni Parents gathered for
a Holiday Coffee in the Lower School Simpson
Commons. Jeanne Joyner led many of the group
on a tour of the Lower School, and a great time was
had by all. To join the Alumni Parents Association,
