HOBE SOUND
C OMMUNITY
CHEST
2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Dear Friends of the Hobe Sound Community Chest,
We did it again! Our 2014 fundraising campaign ended
with the largest total in the Chest’s history: $1,322,911, before
direct fundraising expenses of $18,643. Administrative costs
amounted to 11% of net funds raised. Financial year-end assets
stood at $2,716,842. In 2015, we were able to award grants totaling
$1,130,500.
OUR MISSION
The Hobe Sound Community Chest’s mission
is to raise funds to support qualifying nonprofit
social service agencies that improve the lives
of Hobe Sound residents in need.
Thanks to our volunteer directors’ effective oversight,
you may rest assured your contributions are spent wisely. These
directors frequently visit and thoroughly vet the agencies we fund,
applying rigorous standards. We have come a long way since our
modest beginning in 1949, when a few concerned citizens joined
forces to write checks for Hobe Sound neighbors in need. As we
have grown over the years, we remain a low-key organization that
keeps administrative costs to a minimum, so we can continue to be
the best way to guarantee your charitable donations directly benefit
Hobe Sound residents.
During my presidency, I hope to be as successful as my
predecessor, Peter S. Pauley. Under his leadership, the annual
campaigns increased funding to Chest-supported agencies
three years in a row. And his philosophy of “collaboration, not
competition” encouraged agencies to work together to benefit the
greater good. Also, his foresight to provide for Hobe Sound’s future
generations led to creation of the Banyan Society, offering donors an
opportunity to leave a legacy. Fortunately, Peter plans to continue
serving as a Chest director in the role of past president.
Of course, there would be no Chest without our donors’
generosity: you are the lifeblood of this organization. We thank
you, along with the professionals and volunteers who work for our
agencies. And we extend special thanks to our staff, Suellen Millroy
and Lori Vanhille, who work tirelessly throughout the year to make
the Chest’s mission a reality.
Sincerely yours,
Robert “Mac” McCormack

GRANTS COMMITTEE REPORT
The newly formed Finance Committee will oversee the allocation

each fall for the following year. When allocating funds, the Grants
Committee considers numerous factors in a selection process both
complex and challenging. Evaluation reports from Directors assigned
to visit each agency are especially important. Not every agency
qualifies for a grant, some receive less than requested and, in certain
situations when the Grants Committee approves a special request,
some receive more.

DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORT
Once again, we thank our donors who are the key to success for
this organization and the many agencies it supports. We are extremely
grateful for your contributions!
Also, we thank our hardworking Directors, the majority of whom
are Leadership Donors, for contacting current and prospective donors.
We are especially thankful to Development Committee members
from Jupiter Island, Loblolly and other Hobe Sound areas: Tom
Balling, John Colby, Bill Conner, Joe Frelinghuysen, Rick Fritz, Marc
Gaylord, Ray Gilmartin, Warren Hayford, Fred Kelleher, Sue Lester,
Harry MacArthur, Bob McCormack, Becky O’Neill, Nat Reed, Bob

In this Annual Report, we list our forty-one agencies/organizations
in six major categories. Please note the emphasis on educational
programs for children and assistance programs for families, the
homeless and elderly. As well as offering on-going support, the Chest
has helped many of these agencies expand their Hobe Sound activities
over the years.

ENDOWMENT INVESTMENT COMMITTEE REPORT
The Hobe Sound Community Chest Endowment is a pool of assets
segregated from HSCC operating funds and designated for conservative,
long-term investment. It was established in January, 2013.
BANYAN SOCIETY
FOUNDING MEMBERS
The primary goal of the endowment portfolio is to grow a
substantial capital fund through bequests, special gifts, memorials,
and asset appreciation. This fund will allow the Chest to respond to
unforeseen emergencies caused by hurricanes or other natural disasters,
cover fundraising shortfalls due to economic recessions, and provide
additional income for administrative costs. It may also give the Chest
the financial capacity to initiate and/or lead capital projects on behalf
of the agencies we support.

PLANNED GIVING COMMITTEE REPORT
Established in 2013, the Banyan Society is the planned giving
initiative for future annual grants or investment in our endowment.
Donors can leave a legacy by including the Chest in their estate plans
and naming it as a beneficiary of their will, trust, retirement account,
donor-advised fund or life insurance policy.
Other options are also available, such as a tax-advantaged, lifeincome gift. Also, donors may become founding members of the
Banyan Society, by making an additional donation of $5,000 or more
to the Endowment Fund.
Like our local Banyans, membership in the Banyan Society will
grow roots in the Hobe Sound community, assuring the Chest’s longterm growth and success.
For further information, please request a brochure by calling the
Chest office at 772-545-9072.

COMMUNICATION AND OUTREACH COMMITTEE
The newly formed Communication and Outreach Committee will
reach out to prospective donors from Jupiter Island, Loblolly and other
Hobe Sound areas, by organizing agency tours and special events. It
will also advise on the newsletter and the website.

PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT
The Publications Committee reduces communication costs by
writing and editing texts, as well as designing layouts in-house.
This year the committee released Volume 3 of the newsletter sent
to Chest donors, thanking them for their support and showing them
how their dollars were spent. Also, the committee updated the Chest
website, issued press releases to local media, and prepared this Annual
Report.

COMMITTEE ON DIRECTORS
The newly formed Committee on Directors supervises matters
related to the Board of Directors. It develops criteria for membership,
nominates candidates for election, oversees orientation of new
Directors, and monitors term expirations and renewal options. This
committee will also have authority to propose amendments to the
Bylaws.
For 2014-2015, we welcome new Directors: Nancy Auth, Frank
Bell, Mary Ann Casey, Rembert Cribb, Joyce Bullen Gay, Henry Heck,
Edgar Janotta, Bradley Krey, Linda McGillicuddy, William McKenna,
J. Geddes Parsons, Elizabeth Andrus Thompson, and Michelle Tucker.
Also, we recognize the dedicated service and commitment of our
retiring Directors: John Colby, Jennifer Ferrari, Kitty Goldsmith, Ruth
Mead, Becky O’Neill, and Joe Taddeo.
We thank our past and present Directors for their hard work and
dedication. The Chest’s success depends on them to visit, evaluate and
raise funds for the agencies we support.

HOBE SOUND
COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
From left, Hobe Sound Community Chest Past President Peter Pauley; 2015
Community Service Award Recipient Elizabeth Barbella, Chief Executive Officer of
House of Hope; Chest Treasurer Joseph Frelinghuysen and Chest Vice President Mali
Annibali.
An endowment from the Barra Foundation in 1996
established the annual Hobe Sound Community Service Award.
The recipient, selected from a list of individuals who have made
a significant social service contribution to our community, is
awarded a commemorative gift and a $5,000 contribution to a
charitable organization of the recipient’s choice.
The 2015 honoree is Elizabeth Barbella, CEO of House of
Hope, an organization that helped 3,600 people in Hobe Sound
last year overcome hunger and hardship. Since becoming CEO
in 2012, Barbella has tripled the size of Hobe Sound’s House of
Hope and expanded services, adding case management as a key
feature.
When presenting the award, Chest Director Joe Frelinghuysen
said, “What makes Elizabeth unique and special is her unbridled
enthusiasm for what she does, her optimism and vision for
what House of Hope can become by providing a broad scope
of services to its clients and her amazing ability to articulate her
vision and to enlist the support and enthusiasm of her staff, her
many volunteers, her funders and the many other agencies House
of Hope collaborates with.”
