NEVERLAND PRIDE 2016 will take place Friday, June 24th through Sunday, June 26th with three spectacular events including the main event, Saturday night’s “The Lost Boys” at Metro. “Our parties are always a tribute to big imagination,” says Anthony DiFiore, Neverland’s founder and Creative Director. “So for this year’s Chicago Pride, our production team is building extravagant Peter Pan and Hook elements to the main stage. Instead of traditional sets, we’re producing the night as more of a storyline with dancers and 6 GRAB Magazine performers dressed as the famous characters.” Barcelona-based DJ Ivan Gomez mans the decks of the main event alongside Chicago’s own Alexis-R. Superstar DJ Paulo spins the Sunday Closing Party at The Mid. Anthony DiFiore explains more. David Ernst: How did you come up with the idea for Neverland? Anthony DiFiore: Neverland actually evolved from house parties! Over 4 years ago I used to host a lot of parties at my home, and one day a manager from Hydrate told me I should try it out at his club. Back then the music scene in Boystown wasn’t as fresh May 31, 2016 as it is now. We now have DJs traveling into Chicago almost every weekend from all over the world. When we started, it was a lot of the same music on rotation every month. DE: What is your ultimate goal when planning a new event? AD: To surprise people. DE: How did you choose this year’s theme, “The Lost Boys”? AD: It’s basically Neverland presents “Neverland”. We’ve always wanted to do a Peter Pan theme, but were saving it for the right moment. We’ve been working for several years now on building up Chicago Pride weekend, and felt Photo By Jennifer Catherine like the Pride main event would be the perfect setting for this theme. floor) to the balcony (where we sometimes put our own lighting technician). There’s non-stop performances and preparation from 11pm-4am, and then I usually get about 30 minutes to go out on the dance floor and relax before last call. Photographer Adam Ouahmane Graphic Artist Kyle Krueger DE: Will you be one of the boys getting lost on the dance floor? AD: I wish! I get my leg and ass workout at Metro events because I’m constantly running up and down the stairs that connect the green room (first floor) to the stage (2nd 8 GRAB Magazine May 31, 2016 DE: What’s your emotional state the weekend of the event? AD: Depends on ticket sales! If we have really great pre-sales then my biggest focus is making sure the show operates seamlessly. If ticket sales are just modest then I have that extra anxiety of wondering how many people are going to show up. I will add: I feel very fortunate that Neverland has come so far to the point that we can have a party on a Wednesday (our last Purity Ball) and it was still packed. DE: How do you balance your parties to attract the new young gay boys and still appease the crowds who have attending Neverland since the beginning? AD: I think it’s one of those scenarios where crowds beget crowds. People show up because they know a lot of others are going to show up, and they bring new friends or boyfriends. I’ve met a lot of young guys who have said Neverland was their first big gay Photographer Adam Ouahmane Graphic Artist Kyle Krueger DE: How will you bring “The Lost Boys” to life? AD: We’ll bring it to life with the characters. Everyone knows Pan, Hook, Tinkerbell, Wendy, and everyone will be able to instantly recognize the characters we bring to life on-stage. It will be more nostalgic than just seeing gogo dancers in matching costumes. There’s a change for an actual story to unfold on our stage. dance party, and that they found out through word-ofmouth or a post on Facebook. We do so much social media marketing, and everyone in their 20’s/30’s is on Facebook/ Instagram. DE: Would you call it a diverse crowd? AD: Definitely. We’ve been nurturing talented transgender and drag performers (of all shapes and races) since Neverland was founded. We’re fortunate enough to have a lot of drag queens and club kids come dressed for the theme. I love that. It adds flavor to the events. DE: What would you say to someone who is on the fence about venturing to Neverland? AD: You need to experience it. There’s a diverse team of some of the most talented artists in Chicago who pour their soul into everything from set design to costume design to music, sound, lighting, special effects, performances; to the Photographer Adam Ouahmane Graphic Artist Kyle Krueger nuances that don’t matter to anyone else other than an obsessive event production team. And all of this so you can have a great time with your friends, your lover; so you can get laid, so you can meet new people, so you can have a night you’ll never forget. Pre-sale tickets, including $95 weekend passes to all three events (a $35 savings), are available now at www.neverlandpride.com. May 31, 2016 GRAB Magazine 9 GRAB BETINA PRIDE Northalsted Business Alliance Pride Person Betina Gozo CrossTown Fitness Q: How long have you been with CrossTown Fitness? Betina Gozo: I have been working with CTF since May 2013, one week after the opening of our first location in the West Loop! I was excited to hear we were expanding into Boystown last year, and couldn’t be happier to work in both locations. Q: How long as CrossTown Fitness been a part of the Northalsted Business Alliance? BG: We actually became part of the Northalsted Business Alliance before we opened our doors in 2015. The Alliance has been there from day one with our Grand Opening, to hosting member classes throughout the year, and helping us connect with the community to promote strong and healthy lifestyles. Q: What made you decide to pursue a career in personal training? BG: When I stared taking working out more seriously, I loved discovering more about my body and learning so much about the different styles of training. Watching changes happen for myself was something I wanted to make happen for other people I loved the feeling of getting stronger and feeling happier, and I wanted everyone else to feel the same! Q: What is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a personal trainer? BG: I love watching people making lifestyle changes, not only by training and working out, but in their every day lives and choices. Exercising truly does make people have better lives! CrossTown loves to be the vehicle for people to be successful in every part of their life, not just the time they spend in the gym. Q: When you are not at work, what other businesses in Boystown do you frequent? BG: We are right next door to Whole Foods where I grab lunch from their healthy salad bar. During the evening though, I am sucker for Musical Mondays at Sidetrack- it is such a blast! Q: How do you exude pride everyday? BG: I strive to stay true to who I am every day I walk with confidence, yet 14 GRAB Magazine May 31, 2016 still love and respect everything and everyone around me. Q: What is something people would never guess about you? BG: I played bass in a cover band for five years as my full time job. The lead singer and myself frequented sparkle bras, high waisted shiny booty shorts, and leather boots. I also own 2 mopeds, not scooters, 50CC old-school mopeds. There is a very big difference! McCaffrey-Boss, Esq. Q: I just bought my first condominium and one week after I moved in, the association sent me a notice that there would be a special assessment to fix the back porch and stairs and that my share was $5,000 of the cost. Do I have to pay this? At closing, I also had to pay a large transfer tax to the City of Chicago. What are my options? A: Before you buy any condominium, you should be prepared to examine a fair amount of paperwork. It is better to work hard before the closing than to wake up to a nightmare of problems afterward. When you buy into a condo building, you have to pay the assessments; you are bound to pay the assessments. And if you don’t, they will put a lien on your property or evict you. That’s why it’s important to be diligent before buying a condo unit, looking into the financials of the governing association before closing on a deal. Before buying, find out if special assessments are anticipated, get a statement of the reserves and find out how they compare to the most recent reserve study. 24 GRAB Magazine May 31, 2016 A reserve study will analyze the financial state of the association’s reserves and anticipate expenditures that will be needed down the line. If a study hasn’t been done, step back and think about what you’re getting into: An association that may not be adequately prepared for future expenses. When you buy, make sure your sales contract is subject to your review and approval of the following condominium documents: • Declaration, bylaws, rules and regulations You must be satisfied that you can live within the guidelines that each building imposes. The bylaws can cover pets, leasing your condominium and requirements that the apartment floors must always be carpeted to reduce noise. • Statement of any large expenditures by the association This information will let you know if the association is planning a major building repair or improvement that could cause your assessment to increase. • Statement of the amount of the reserve or replacement fund This information will tell you how well the board of managers is running the building and providing for future unforeseen repairs. As for transfer taxes, if you will be making an offer to purchase, have your realtor submit your offer with a provision that the city transfer tax and all other transfer taxes, including State of Illinois and Cook County (they total a combined $1.50 per thousand of sales price), be split 50/50 by the Seller and Purchaser. This way, some of the pain can be shared with the Seller. If you are 65 or over, you can obtain a refund if you purchase property valued at $250,000 or less and live in the premises for at least one year. Know that if you are purchasing a new condominium, the Illinois Condominium Property Act provides that a “detailed accounting” is to be provided by every developer within 60 days after election of the first unit owner board of managers. The issue that comes up is whether the developer has properly paid assessments. The law requires that the developer pay assessments on unsold units beginning with the first conveyance and to collect assessments from owners of sold units during the period from the first sale until turnover to the unit-owner controlled board. Also, be aware of the Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act, 815 ILCS 513/1. This law requires every contractor who performs home repair, improvement or remodeling on residential real estate for a sum in excess of $1,000, to obtain a written contract signed by the homeowner, and a give them a copy of the pamphlet “Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights,” prior to the beginning of the work. Roger McCaffrey-Boss is a gradute of Hamline University School of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota, and is a member of the Chicago Bar Association. You can email him at [email protected]. He suggests that you consult your own lawyer for any specific questions regarding the issues raised in this column. May 31, 2016 GRAB Magazine 27 TRANSGENDER GRAB HOLLY Will You Sit Next to Me Here at the Lunch Counter? By Holly Maholm Are you old enough – or, if you are younger, did you ever read about – the earliest days of the Civil Rights struggle in this country? Back on February 1, 1960, in Greensboro, North Carolina, four young black men staged a “sit-in” at the lunch counter of a Woolworth store. Of course, that lunch counter was for “Whites Only” but those brave young men came in and sat on the stools and tried to order a simple Coca-Cola (which they never got). And there were plenty of white folks in that city who said, “Well, let them go someplace else to buy a Coke. There’s other places that serve their kind.” But in time, as we know, justice prevailed. One aspect of that injustice – perhaps, at the time, a rather subtle consideration – was this: That Woolworth store was protected by a police force and a fire department and a city ambulance service and a public works department (the roads and sidewalks) and a court system (to deal with anyone who robbed the place), all of which were paid for by city taxes. And those city taxes were paid, in part, by all the black families who lived in that town. So, even though a significant part of that town was “off limits” to black folk, nevertheless black citizens were compelled to pay taxes to support all those businesses and government buildings they couldn’t use. Now, this would be merely a shameful incident from our nation’s past … except it is happening all over again, and it promises to get worse. It started with bakeries refusing to bake wedding cakes for same-sex couples, but it’s not stopping there. No, the legislatures of several states are busy passing laws permitting business owners to refuse service 28 GRAB Magazine to LGBT folks. Their thinking is simple: They want to turn North Carolina and Texas into one big “lunch counter” where we LGBT folks can be turned away. If they get their wish, there will be bars and restaurants and stores and gas stations and government offices that are “Straight Only,” but you – LGBT taxpayer that you are – will still be expected to pay your full share of taxes to support and protect all those places where you are excluded. So when you get fired from a job (for being LGBT) or refused a chance to rent an apartment (for the same reason) and you are made homeless and destitute, the cause will be discrimination that is fully legal under the laws of that state. And you will get no discount on your taxes for being a second-class citizen. What I have said so far is only half the injustice. There is also this. So ask yourself: As to all those citizens who voted for the politicians who allow us to be refused service … where will you find them on a Sunday morning? You will find them attending the Full-Gospel, Baptized-in-Bigotry Church of the Bible-Thumpers, that’s where. And standing up in front of all those True Believers – and delivering a sermon that condemns us LGBT folk – is a pastor whose salary is paid by his church. And that pastor’s salary is bigger and richer than it would otherwise be, because that church (like all other churches) is exempt from paying local real estate taxes (and federal taxes, too). So, you … currently-out-ofwork-and-homeless-LGBT-person that you are (who got lawfully fired from your job and evicted from your apartment) have to pay extra taxes in order to make up for the May 31, 2016 taxes not paid by that pastor who slanders you. Does that seem fair? No, of course not. If that church gets the benefit of police and fire and roads and snow plowing, then they should pay local taxes just like the pizza shop and the Starbucks and the movie theater in that town. Nobody should have to subsidize the salary of that hateful preacher, least of all us LGBT-folk who suffer so much because of his bigotry. We pay the same taxes as everybody else, and we deserve – we have purchased! – the same right to patronize all those “opento-the-public” businesses supported and protected by local taxes. And most important, it’s time for churches – especially those churches that pretend to share a message of love and brotherhood – to pay the same taxes that everybody else pays. Every little diner and coffee shop and seamstress in my town pays those taxes, and no one is asking any church to pay any more than what everyone else pays. Yes, let the churches pay the same taxes that the lunch counters pay. It’s only just. Holly Maholm is a transgender woman living in Cleveland, Ohio. He offered opportunity for a diverse community of musicians and composers to contribute their immense talents to one of the finest and most creative orchestras in the world." Under the direction of Music Director Maestro Mei-Ann Chen and Executive Director Jim Hirsch, Chicago Sinfonietta has continued Maestro Freeman's mission of 38 GRAB Magazine providing exciting opportunities for minority musicians while showcasing the range of musical expression that is present in the many symphonic musical traditions of the world. Though that visibility has continued the rise, so too has Trans-related violence and discrimination, including a hotbed of political fear-mongering and hateful legislation from several U.S. States. With these elevated attacks, both in the civil and legislative spheres, it is undeniable that more work remains to be done in breaking down barriers. Susan is grieving the loss of her teenage daughter. Two lives collide in a seaside cafe and are forever changed. Deidre Kinahan, playwright of the acclaimed Irish drama Moment, masterfully unspools a gripping contemporary tale over three distinct timelines in this U.S. premiere. "I’m thrilled to be back in Chicago and working with Irish Theatre and my friend Joanie Schultz,” comments playwright Deirdre Kinahan. “Chicago embraced my play Moment several years ago at Steep Theatre. Spinning is favorite piece of mine, and I'm delighted for the opportunity to once again share my work with Chicago audiences.” “The emotional life of Spinning is viscerally truthful and relatable,” comments Director Joanie Schultz. “Deirdre Kinahan throws us head first into the colliding lives of two parents desperately trying to hang on to their children. The play weaves together an emotional landscape of loss and regret in which devastation and confusion spiral out of control in action and in memory. As we jump in time through past and present, the play keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, trying madly to understand the events that got us to this present moment. The cast, mostly made up of ITC company members, bring a fearlessly vulnerable energy to the play that breathes the best kind of life into this thrilling piece.” Tickets now on sale at www.irishtheatreofchicago. by Emma Stanton is fused with interwoven narratives of movement, music, group choreography and funerary rites that investigate the fatigue of hope in the face of profound grief. A group of doctors, patients and figures from mythology are pulled from different moments in history into the shelter of its glass walls by a common search – they are all seeking a cure for their condition, something that will transcend certain fate and immobilize death. In this magical purgatory, haunted by mythic figures, snake-oil salesmen and angels, time is frozen and a bargain can be struck. The seekers must confront their own desire to stay stuck. How can we risk hope when a cure is nowhere to be found? What do we sacrifice when we fight to keep things the same? How much loss must we endure? Following the ancient rhythms of Greek and Hindu mythology, set to a Viennese Waltz and pulling from the canon of 1980's heartbreak power ballads, and spinning through original movement and dance inspired by the orbit of the planetary realms and the laws from Kepler and Newton, THE CURE looks at how we plant the seeds of hope in an uncertain future and where we can find the strength to continue searching for a cure. The data finds that more Americans now die as a result of hepatitis C infection than from 60 other infectious diseases reported to the CDC – including HIV, tuberculosis, and pneumococcal disease – combined. In response, Dr. Magda Houlberg, Chief Clinical Officer for Howard Brown Health, release the following statement: “Howard Brown Health has been working to increase the numbers of patients screened for hepatitis C (HCV) and to use the most up-to-date treatment approaches for the people we serve. The numbers released by the CDC are very concerning, especially considering risk factors prevalent in the LGBTQ and other communities. Howard Brown uses a unique, multidisciplinary approach to HCV screening and treatment, which includes screening in primary care and sexual health walk-in settings, nurse education, case management, and pharmacy support. With aggressive screening and a robust approach to treatment, we can decrease these numbers in the future.” In 2015, Howard Brown Health screened 5,743 unique patients for HCV, with a positivity rate of 2.5%. Also in 2015, an HCV project team was formed, meeting weekly to review patients on treatment, or in queue for, treatment. All Howard Brown physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants participate in a training for community-based medical providers in effectively treating HCV in the primary care setting. In 2015 Howard Brown’s HCV team served 192 patients living with active HCV, and cured 44 patients. Factors that contribute to the spread of HCV include lack of access to healthcare, stigma, lack of availability of sterile needles and syringes for hormone treatment, outdated views, lack of available sterile needles and syringes for people who inject drugs, barriers to education and screening, sexual transmission, and poor insurance coverage. Dr. Houlberg added, "We 42 GRAB Magazine encourage people concerned about possible HCV infection or who need guidance exploring treatment options to consult medical experts." Howard Brown's Walk-in Clinic offers access to screening on a sliding-scale fee structure six-days a week. Hours and other information are posted at howardbrown.org. Well seeing Bruno Bernal under water warming up to Sebastian Kross is a nice start, it also helps when Bernal goes down on Sebastian's big ol' cock! Now both of these guys have juicy asses, but Kross (one really good ass eater) is the first to put a tongue up it (lucky Kross). When it's time to sit on a dick we all know it's Bernal doing the sitting (time to give it up Kross) and you are going to love the way Bernal sits on it! Next up we have Jacob Peterson and JJ Knight, and I have to give props to Peterson because not only does he go down on Knight's big Grabby nominated dick, he then bounces on it! Only the cocky Killian James would be erect swimming around a pool looking for someone to play with, and his victim will be the innocent looking Addison Graham. But I am a bit confused... humping and bumping is all that was done. After a swim, Chris Bines and Bruno Bernal are back in the house and Bines is first to lose his swim suit with Bernal on his knees. After the guys take turns sucking on each other it's the tan line free Bernal with a dick up his bum. Now it's time for bathroom sex with the very passionate Dorian Ferro and the innocent looking Gabriel Cross who have some hot kissing. We then find out Cross has a big one and after he starts munching on Ferro's ass we know where he is going to put that big dick... all I can say is Cross just isn't that innocent! This is a good movie, I just expected more. 3.75 Stars! I love a movie that starts in a pool, and two men like Chris Bines and Scott Riley kissing on each other makes it better! Once on land it's Riley dropping his suit so Bines can put his tongue up Riley's ass. Ass eating leads to Bines fucking Riley every which way and Sunday. Next we find Jack Hunter and Addison Graham sharing a shower (okay it's gay porn so we know there's going to be some touching going on)! After the guys take turns sucking and licking, they have a very hot JO scene. Pool time with Sean Zevran and Gabriel Cross and I think Zevran is hot for Cross (in real life I have heard Zevran likes a hot pocket gay). After some major ass eating on Zevran's part, it's Zevran giving Cross' ass a major pounding! Sebastian Kross and Jack Hunter find each other and in no time Hunter is bouncing on Kross' dick (this scene could've been better if Hunter's big dick found a home up Kross' ass)! Now it's time for Bruno Bernal and Gabriel Cross to celebrate with some bubbly, and guys we know drinking leads to kissing, and kissing leads to sucking, and sucking leads to Cross' big dick up Bernal's ass. The movie has hot sex, but I thought it would've been better with a 3 way or two. 3.75 Stars! 2015. At that time, gay bar raids had become common in cities throughout the country. That night, patrons of the bar battled the police, and street demonstrations continued for several days. During that week, gay liberation organizations were formed, thus giving birth to the modern day LGBT rights movement. In the four decades since Stonewall, the world has changed dramatically. The accomplishments, as well as some setbacks since that time are many. Currently, there are still several LGBT issues on the front burner including passing federal legislation forbidding discrimination in jobs, housing and public accommodations. Although a lot has been accomplished during the past 47 years, there is still a long way to go. Every year, Pride is commemorated and celebrated around the world in many different ways. Events include parades, marches, festivals, athletic events, choral concerts, workshops, etc. The bottom line is that these events bring together millions of people worldwide. Chicago commemorates and celebrates Pride with dozens of events during June Pride Month. It culminates with the annual Pride Parade coordinated by the PRIDEChicago group which attracts hundreds of thousands of people. This year, the Chicago 47th Annual Pride Parade is scheduled for Sunday June 26 at 12 Noon stepping off from the corner of Montrose and Broadway. From the Broadway/Montrose corner, the parade will proceed south on Broadway; then south on Halsted; then east on Belmont; then south on Broadway; then east on Diversey to Cannon Drive in Lincoln Park. Each year, parade entries, as well as groups sponsoring Pride Month events, have the option of using an international theme or a theme or slogan of their own choice. This year’s international theme is “Solidarity Through Pride” For safety sake, as spectators increased, the parade route was lengthened by several blocks a few years ago, thus adding more space for people to view the parade. The longer route has also added more elevated train stations for potential spectators to reach the parade route. Parade attendees are advised to consider making use of the red line’s stations at Wilson Avenue, Sheridan Road or Addison Street rather than the overcrowded Belmont Avenue station. There will also be six pedestrian cross-over streets on the parade route staffed by Chicago Police officers, to allow spectators to cross from one side of the parade route to another, to balance out the crowd. They include: Montrose Avenue, Irving Park Road, Addison Street, Grace Street, Roscoe Street and Wellington Avenue. There are also several sites where cooling busses will be located and also an area for the physically challenged/ wheelchairs, seniors and for people who need or want more space. The parade web site: ChicagoPrideCalendar.org will have updated information about these areas, as well as a list of street closures/no parking/tow zone streets. Like last year, the parade will have more security and a tighter rein on public alcohol consumption. The consumption of alcoholic beverages by spectators on the sidewalks or streets is prohibited by city ordinance. So the police department can issue costly tickets whose fines have dramatically increased to $1000. They can also require the immediate disposal of open containers of alcoholic beverages into trash receptacles. In addition to the large number of police officers who staff the event, PRIDEChicago (parade organizers) are providing 160 off-duty police officers (up from 90 last year), to assist the police presence. Spectators are urged to bring water and use sunscreen since parade day is often hot and sunny. Capping off parade day for the thirteenth year in a row, ABC 7 Chicago is planning to air a one hour taped presentation of the first hour of the parade later that night. Check local television listings or ABC7Chicago.com for air time.
