The WOW factor came to Pride In Print in more ways
than one this year. Not only is there innovation and
ingenuity in many of the entries, there is also a flavour
of the World of Wearable Art (WOW) that has become
iconic on the New Zealand fashion scene.
The WOW Awards have become synonymous with
the creation of dresses using outrageous materials, and
Pride In Print this year had exactly that – dresses made
from paper that actually made a successful catwalk
show.
The dresses were entered by Fuji Xerox and
were made by NZ Fashion Tech students as part of an
elaborate campaign to promote the launch of the Fuji
Xerox Versant 2100 digital printer, demonstrating the
versatility of its print abilities.
The campaign, inspired by advertising agency,
Republik, invented a fictional French fashion designer
who wanted to take print into the glamorous world of
high fashion. There was more… fiction had to become
reality – the “creations” had to become real dresses,
made of printed paper.
NZ Fashion Tech tutors Denise Ford and Janis
MacEwan were contacted, who got their students to
team up in pairs and create a collection of garments to
show at a real catwalk event – the Fashion Collection de
Papier Show.
This took place before 200 people at the Mercedes
Benz showroom in Auckland and it was a huge success.
Val Marshall-Smith, the Fashion Tech’s Academic
Director, says the approach to make the dresses was an
amazing opportunity for first year students to become
involved in a major design and marketing project.
“The brief was intriguing and exciting and we put the
idea forward to our first year students, who of course
jumped at the chance.”
Val says NZ Fashion Tech has worked in
collaboration with a number of partners over the years,
from Kimberley Clark to the Red Cross and Resene.
“These challenges are so valuable because this
not only requires excellent technical and design skills,
but also other skills such as communication, working to
a brief, time management etc – all skills that will help
our students in their future careers, and which we find
extremely difficult to replicate in the classroom.”
And as for the students? … “The learning they took
from this was immeasurable, and for us as an institution,
we loved every second of it. This was a match made in
heaven. We wish we could make this an annual event!”
says Val.
The Pride In Print judges agreed that the dresses
had the WOW factor in spades and one – a pink and
white creation called La Fleur, created by students
Natasha (Tash) McCaffrey and Zoe Reid – was a
particular favourite.
Judges complemented the entry as being not just
inventive, but fit for purpose as a real garment.
“It has been worn and still looks fresh and crisp”…
“an excellent use of paper. Very innovative and clever
detailing”… “no detail left unattended”… “the more you
look, the more you discover”, they said.
La Fleur was entered in the Specialty Products –
Finishing category and won gold for Fuji Xerox.
The brilliance of the dresses has had an
international spin off. Fuji Xerox Hong Kong has
commissioned two student pairs to recreate their
dresses for an international printing trade show in
November.

THE RUB OF
THE GREEN

The Industry Development category always showcases the avant
garde trends in New Zealand and this year, the industry’s “green”
credentials were to the fore.
The Industry Development Category winner was Live to
Print – Screeners Choice, natural plant-based inks which are
completely environmentally-friendly. For once, companies with a
commitment to environmental protection have the choice to opt
for screen printing as a means of furthering their cause.
In the same category the La Boca Loca cookbook not
only was printed on environmentally-credentialed paper, with
vegetable-based inks and citrus cleaners, printers Soar Printing
also purchased carbon credits to help fund New Zealand
renewable energy sources such as the Tararua Wind Farm and the
Christchurch Burwood Gas Landfill project.
In keeping with the green theme, judges noted a lot more
inkjet printing moving towards wood and other materials. Big
Colour Print’s entry, Tahi Estate Birds, printed on plywood, was a
good example of what judges found was a refreshing approach.
Innovation was captured by Huhtamaki Henderson Ltd which
produced a series of cardboard wrappers for ice blocks made by
boutique Paremoremo company Dr Feelgood. The inner coatings
in the cardboard sleeves keep the product fresh, and most
importantly, ice cold!
At the same time, printers are ever expanding their
technological boundaries.
A label for Streaky Bacon, entered by Labels and Litho,
featured an RFID tag as part of its design. Radio-frequency
identification is the wireless use of electromagnetic fields to
transfer data, for the purposes of automatically identifying and
tracking tags attached to products.
RFID can also be coupled with sensors to help detect
tampering with goods – something which, in these days of
terrorist scares against infant formula, is of huge appeal to
new parents who need the assurance they are buying “what is
supposed to be in the packet”.
And for the printing purist, there was another game-changer
to celebrate.
Stamps produced for Singapore by Southern Colour Print
were certified by Hong Kong analysts as having a print resolution
of 600 lines per inch – in layperson’s terms, an incredibly fine
detail that enhances the image to the eye.
Some judges said they had never heard of the like being
achieved in New Zealand before.
From wearable art to technological innovation, winning
entries into Pride In Print this year have it all.

REPORT – 2015

2015, another year when the Power of Print
succeeded against the difficulties of world
and domestic economic pressures.
Despite a backdrop of difficult trading
conditions for some in our industry, it was
great to hear of the many successes when
the Judging Panel reconvened. Different
judges commented on international
awards won and successful competition
against overseas print suppliers.
This is wonderful news. It shows how
Kiwi printers, designers and packaging
companies are honing their skills to not
just compete against the best of overseas
talent, but beat them.
Their confidence was reflected in an
approximate 20% increase in the number
of entries from that in 2014, indicative of
our industry’s support for Pride In Print.
This larger number of entries maintained
the high quality levels that have been
consistently lifting in recent years.
Given the continuing rise in Pride In Print
standards, this is very good news indeed.
For over 20 years now, the Pride
In Print Awards have been the key to
raising the bar in quality standards, of
showcasing the best that the New Zealand
print industry has to offer and in so doing,
demonstrating world-class quality.
Entries bore witness to a remarkable
attention to detail, with flexographic,
screen and newsprint in particular. Some
categories had fewer entries, others more,
only reflecting the ongoing changes in our
marketplace – a trend which Pride In Print
has captured through subtle tweaks to our
sub-categories.
This is heartening for our New
Zealand print industry in general. We have
fought through tough economic conditions
and we are now emerging with justifiable
pride in our print, at even higher quality
levels than ever before.
On behalf of the Judging Panel, I
congratulate all those who provided
entries. They had to stand some quite
remarkable scrutiny as we sought to
identify the very best amongst many
exceptional entries.
Thank you too, to the group of busy
print professionals who gave so much of
their time and expertise as the Pride In
Print panel of judges.
Pride In Print illustrates the power
of print – conveying the essence of craft
and skill in order to provide our clients
with superb print products, services and
complete satisfaction.

showcased in the Industry Development
Category. Industry Development
embraces four areas of print – selfpromotion (printers push boundaries of
design and technological development
to attract the print buyer), innovation
(highlighting where printers use new
concepts to help their customers
market their products successfully),
environmental, and export. Innovation
and quality attract overseas print buyers
to bring their work to New Zealand, and
the customer service standards they get
makes them keep it here.

conscience have had a new avenue of print
buying opened up to them by the Pride
In Print Industry Development Category
winner Live to Print.
The boutique Whangarei printery
which specialises in high-quality art
printing, fine art serigraphs and silk screen
print editions, came up with the concept of
a screen printing ink so environmentallyfriendly that screen printing is presented
in a new commercial light.
Its Screeners Choice selection of
vibrant colours blew away the Pride In
Print judges who said the concept was so
good “it should have been produced
years ago”.

Senior judge Angelique SparnaayMartin said the commercial flow-on
benefit of the inks was that they opened
up screen printing to companies who
previously had not considered it for their
products.
“The natural plant-based inks are so
completely environmentally-friendly, there
are no alcohols, no toxins, no odour and no
grease to deal with.
“Clean-up is easy, they are quick
drying and have a long life.
“The main users now are schools
of fine arts but many companies keen to
do screen printing have been put off in the
past. They are environmentally-friendly
firms and don’t want to use chemicals.
“Today, this product has given them
a new choice.”

–
The power of print is no better captured
than in the Tawharanui Waves limited
edition print that won the Specialty
Products category of the Awards.
Here is an example of artist and
printer working together, in harmony, to
produce fine art of a breathtaking quality.
Artist Matt Payne worked with
Artrite Screen Printing of Onehunga on
site to get the print colours just right, so
that he could faithfully recreate his original
painting in a limited run of prints on cotton
art paper that went for sale in the Matt
Payne Galleries.
The artistry and craftsmanship
combined, with colours being poured on to
the screen and blended by hand to get an
even gradation from dark to light.
In all, 27 colours were mixed under
the artist’s direction, with a single screen
print pass for each in turn, until the artist
was sure his original acrylic painting was
being perfectly reproduced.
Awards Manager Sue Archibald
said this represents a “fantastic use of
screen print and merges craftsmanship
with old and new technology.
“The printer and the artist worked
together. Three colours were hand-mixed
to create the various shades needed by the
artist to represent his original work, and
the calibration of these shades was made
with the naked eye. The end result was 100
fine art prints.
“Perhaps the best comment about
the quality of this work came from one of
the expert judges. He said: ‘It is work like
this that made me want to join the industry
when I was 13’. “
Tawharanui Waves also carried
off the Pride In Print process award for
screenprinting.

We want the artist to get the accolades, and from that we get
our reward in turn. Seeing our client get the plaudits gives us
so much satisfaction. We know then we have done a great job

Art meets print in the Specialty
Products category of Pride In Print.
Work covers a fusion of art and design in
limited edition prints, cleverly-designed
printed adornments or textiles, and fine
finishing such as bindings applied to
beautiful books and albums. Wedding
stationery, invitations, greeting cards
and specialist industrial products for
the factory production line also feature
in this category, as does printing on
to substances like glass, wood and
tiles. In each case, there is novelty and
something quite “out of the box”.

The famous World of Wearable Art (WOW)
fashion show got a boost from a series of
wine labels from Auckland’s Panprint that
in itself had a WOW! factor for Pride In
Print Judges. So much so they were rated
world-class.
The Brancott Estate World of
Wearable Art Campaign wine labels
carried off the Promotional Print category
of the Awards with their extraordinary and
classy finish – much like the garments that
grace the catwalk of the WOW event.
The sets of labels feature foiling
and “high build” embossing, giving them a
tactile feel to attract the eye and touch of
the wine buyer.
Judges praised the crisp and clean
approach to grab the buyer’s attention.

in order to have instant appeal to the
customer. It is what makes them stop in
the aisle, reach for the bottle and begin to
browse. It is the label that gives the wine
producer that competitive advantage in
the marketplace.”
Senior judge John Thorrat went

of the art. The care and attention to detail
is outstanding.
“Anyone who has had anything to
do with labels knows how hard they can be.

Instead of just taking a brief, we were working alongside someone to
identify how we could bring it to life – creating something together in a
design-led process. That’s our job and we did that well

A stunning 3D window display in which
a large plastic spider held a pair of Nike
running shoes as its pointed fangs has won
the Display Print Category of Pride In Print.
The Nike Magista Spider was
entered by Big Colour Imaging of Auckland
and also won the award for the best entry
using the Inkjet printing process.
The 3D spider was a multi-level
window display which replicated a spider’s
body, legs and web. The focal point was the
brightly-coloured Nike shoes, to which the
eye was drawn in the centre of the backlit
display.
It was used in shops in both
Australia and New Zealand.
Judges commended the entry as
“unique”… and a “very technical job to put
together”. Another commented: “This is a

use of print we would not have imagined
some years ago.”
Senior judge Symon Yendoll said:
“This is a really spectacular piece. A lot of
design has gone into creating a 3D look.
The designer had to construct a realistic
body and legs for the spider, while making
sure the model could be assembled
properly in store.
“At the end, the Nike shoes
completed the design by looking like the
spider’s fangs. Big Colour Imaging used
specially-made inks to complete the look
and produced three samples for window
display purposes, two for Sydney and one
for Auckland.
“The Nike Magista Spider is
an excellent example of point of sale
innovation.”

Labels are both the first point of
contact with the eye of the buyer and a
vital information source. Shelf appeal is
all-important. The label has to portray
the brand and the elements of quality
that the manufacturer wants to impart
through branding imagery. Special print
techniques include textures, varnishes,
foiling and embossing to give point-ofsale impact. Aesthetics have to mesh
with functionality. The label carries
the essential information on contents
that allows the consumer to make an
informed choice. The result is a fine
balance between design and purpose.

If you fish Taupo then you will recognise this decal. Fly fishers will stick
this on their boats and use it daily. It had to be waterproof and durable. It
is a real working tool

When the Department of Conservation
wanted to produce an easy-to-use
measuring guide for anglers fishing for
trout in the DOC Taupo Fishing District,
it turned to Mesh Print of Petone for a
solution.
And that solution – a screenprinted decal – was so clever on so many
fronts that it carried off the Labels
Category award in Pride In Print.
The label had to show the legal
minimum length of 40cm for the fish from
the tip of the nose to the V of the tail.
DOC had to be sure the finished
decal would not shrink, as any shrinkage
would mean it was not showing the correct
legal length, nor could the printing fade.
Mesh Print’s solution to these
challenges was to take a polyester selfadhesive label and use a screen print to

apply the image of a trout at full size, with
the legal length shown clearly. The decal
sticks on to an easy-to-assemble wooden
measuring block, for which assembly
instructions were included.
Screen printing was the only
process that would print successfully on to
the polyester surface.
Judges were impressed with the
high degree of quality.
Senior judge Richard Noakes
commented: “This work mirrors the skills
of the old school, brought into the modern
age.
“It is all done by hand – no machines
at all. To come out with a result like this,
is quite frankly staggering. The quality is
right up there. I would be proud to call it my
own.”

We had several meetings with the end client and to be honest
we were unsure we could achieve the amazing effect they
wanted. To know that we did manage to get that knock-out
effect, and that we have won Supreme, just blows me away

The Pride In Print Supreme Winner is a
food pouch that answered perfectly the
main role of food packaging – it gave its
contents “meal appeal” to the supermarket
shopper.
Farrah’s Multigrain wrap, printed by
the Branston Street, Christchurch, branch
of Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific, was voted
the “best of the best” because, in the
words of Awards Chairman Scott Porter,
it went straight to the taste buds of the
shopper.
“Many FMCG (fast-moving
consumer goods) decisions are made by
customers in a matter of seconds, and
these guys have not only met the brief,
they have knocked it for six!” he said.
The wrapper was designed in such
a way as to give the impression the printed
photograph of the food contents was
actually in front of the food pouch, sitting
on it. In turn the wrapper appears as if it is
sitting on a coloured table cloth.
Including a white plate in the print
furthered this effect.
Pride In Print judges commended
the wrap as demonstrating the real power
in print: “A good example of designers and
printers working together to create a great
package”… “Great images really make this
stand out”…
Scott Porter went further, and also
praised the calibre of the flexographic
print process used, and the ability of
Amcor Flexibles to compete on the
international stage with success.
“This job speaks to me on many
levels. Visually, it is very appealing. They
have successfully reproduced the colours
and made it look as if the product sits
outside the wrapper.
“There is extra tactile feel applied
over some areas such as the recipes, to
enhance the experience of the buyer.
These guys have found a way to stop work
of this calibre going offshore. It rocks!”
The wrapper won both the
Packaging Category prize and the award
as the best entry using a flexographic print
process.

Packaging is a combination of product
protection, brand awareness and
consumer appeal. In its various forms
– flexible, carton board, corrugated
board, metal or other materials – it has
to be fit for purpose in containing and
sealing its contents, protecting the
product from handling, sunlight, water
or contamination. At the same time it
must promote the brand image of the
client and scream “pick me” on the retail
shelves. Kiwi printers have been adept
at raising their quality bar to compete
with overseas companies, thinking
outside the square to provide quality
products and design. They are leading
the way in demonstrating the power
of print – keeping print work in New
Zealand and providing customers with
an edge.

(Wellington)-based Printlink was named the 2014
PrintNZ Apprentice of the Year at a well-attended
Pride In Print Awards Evening held at Wellington’s
TSB Arena on May 1.
In a very respectful acceptance speech, Mr
Lesa made a large roll-call of acknowledgements,
beginning with his fellow finalists and ending with
special tribute to his family and girlfriend for “all
of the positive advice you have given me on this
journey”.
“I really have to give it over to the other four
finalists – I have got to know them over the past
day or so, they are really lovely people and any one
of us could have won it,” he said.
In thanking his trainers and company
management, Mr Lesa noted: “They have taught me
so much and been so supportive, it made the whole
journey so much easier for me – I have enjoyed the
whole process.”
Reflecting on his thoughts prior to the
apprenticeship – which he has undertaken over the

past five of his 11-year career in the industry – Mr
Lesa noted: “Before, when I was an assistant, I knew
my capabilities could be better and that’s what
drove me to succeed.”
Printlink bindery manager Tom Jennings
said Mr Lesa had essentially followed in family
footsteps when joining the firm, which is a division
of Blue Star Group New Zealand.
“So he started off in that way and then I think
when he saw what other people could do he thought
‘I can do that better’.
“He is one of those special guys – he is lovely,
always willing to do what he is asked and never
moans. He attracts people, he is a leader and has a
lovely family.”
While acknowledging that Mr Lesa’s
achievement reflected positively on the training
systems that Printlink has in place, Mr Jennings
nonetheless shone the spotlight back on the
Apprentice of the Year himself.
“A guy still has to have the ability... it’s the
ability and mana that he has.”
Mr Jennings added that Printlink and all of its
staff will very much share in his success.
“You could hear by the noise when he received
it!”
Describing Mr Lesa as a “very worthy winner”,
PrintNZ chairperson Dan Blackbourn nonetheless
said this year’s decision was a “very close call” given
the extremely-high calibre of finalists.
PrintNZ general manager Ruth Cobb said
it was always a highlight of her role to work with
training partner Competenz and sponsor BJ Ball
Papers, to select the finalists and overall award
winner.
“Cheyne is a very worthy representative of
the title of Apprentice of the Year and we know he
will have a hugely successful career in our industry,
as will the other four finalists. It is fantastic to see
the calibre of people and the passion they have for
their training, for the businesses they work in and
for the industry.”
CELEBRATING THE
GRADUATES OF 2014
This year saw a new beginning for promoting and
celebrating the graduating apprentices of the
printing and packaging industries. Every training
graduate from 2014 had the opportunity to attend
a graduation ceremony in front of family, friends
and employers with ceremonies held in both
Christchurch and Auckland.
The purpose of the events was to provide a
memorable celebration for the graduates, their
employers, families and friends. They were a way to
publicly acknowledge the training undertaken and
showcase the broad range of programmes offered
by the industry.
Today’s training covers not only the traditional
print-based programmes but also includes
areas such as sales, business admin, first-line
management, lean manufacturing and the Diploma
in Print Management.
The trainees come from a wide variety of
backgrounds and for many it is their first formal
qualification. For all of them it is a very proud
moment. All graduates were presented with a
specially-designed medal that was colour-coded
to represent the level of the training programme
they had completed, with some graduates receiving
multiple medals where they had completed more
than one programme in the 12 months.
Certificates were presented to the 12
Apprentice of the Year semi-finalists, and the Top 5
finalists were announced (see separate article).
In addition prizes were presented to:
• Top Diploma in Print Management Student
– Galyna Masyk, CHH Specialty Boards and
Boxes
• Trainer of the Year – Phillip Ost, NZME Print
• Training Company of the Year – Permark

The graduation ceremonies will be held
each year to celebrate the graduating industry’s
trainees.

These five finalists have it. They were chosen
from more than 40 people that completed their
apprenticeship in 2014, through industry training
partner Competenz. They are representative
of the highly skilled workforce that enables the
printing industry to produce award winning, world
class work. Each of these finalists has shown an
outstanding commitment to learning and applying
those skills to their work on a daily basis.
Print is an effective, engaging communication
tool. It requires a broad skills base to provide
products that deliver results. The print industry
employs almost 10,000 people in nearly 1000
businesses around New Zealand and the career
options are vast, from design and production
to sales, marketing and management. On-job
training enables career progression and a way
for businesses to benefit from more confident
and capable staff that have their competence
recognised with a formal qualification.
To the customers of our industry – be assured
that you are dealing with an industry that is highly
skilled, committed and forward thinking.

After starting out as a casual worker,
Cheyne became passionate about
his role at Printlink. He approached
his manager about an apprenticeship
as he knew his work ethic and
skills were more than ready for the
challenge.
“I love the challenge of being
faced with different tasks everyday.
I never want to stop learning and in
this job, there’s always new things
to learn whether it’s from other
operators or skills you pick up along
the way.”
Cheyne is keen to learn more
about the management side of the
business and give back to those
starting out in their training. Outside
of work Cheyne enjoys spending
time with his family, keeping fit and
is a “huge basketball fan”.
Operations manager Katharine
Williams says Cheyne’s training
performance has been outstanding,
his attitude and work ethic is second
to none.
“The level of respect in which
Cheyne is held by both his peers and
the management team is enviable
and rare for one so young, especially
whilst still in training and recently
qualified.”
Studying graphics in his last year
of high school, Brent was tasked
with completing a design for a real
life client – a local print company.
This piqued his interest in the print
industry and a year on, he started
as a delivery driver and packaging
assistant at a print shop. He was
then offered an apprenticeship at
Gallagher Group.
“The three things I enjoy most
about the printing industry are the
people, variety and scope of work. It
fills me with great pride to produce
printed materials for customers
such as The Chiefs, Waikato Rugby
Union, Hospice Waikato and also the
Gallagher Group – a place I always
remember driving past as a kid
admiring the building, not knowing
what the Gallagher Group produced
or provided to the community.”
Brent is now focussed on
improving his leadership skills and
undertaking further training in
competitive manufacturing.
His employer says: “Since Brent
joined Gallagher we have found his
attitude and enthusiasm towards
training to be very positive. He
has put a lot of effort into his
apprenticeship. We are very happy
to have his trade knowledge within
our team.”
They say as one door closes another
opens. Wayne entered the print
industry after being offered a diecutting apprenticeship at Interpac
Packaging (now Huhtamaki).
“It sounded like a terrific
opportunity for me to learn about a
new industry and to achieve a trade
certificate.
“I have never felt like an
academic person so completing
my apprenticeship has been my
greatest achievement. This has
made me even prouder now I am
helping to train and mentor two of
my work colleagues through the
same apprenticeship.”
Wayne is keen to take on a
management role in the next five
years and is planning his next steps
to achieve this.
Outside of work Wayne enjoys
spending time with his young family
and is a keen distance runner.
Production manager Clinton
Sampson says Wayne consistently
pushed along his own training.
“He has a good focus on quality
and takes full responsibility for
the quality he produces. He will
regularly seek feedback if he has
concerns about any of the work he is
producing.”
Rachael became hooked on graphic
design at age 14 after spending an
afternoon with a family friend – a
graphic designer.
After leaving school she
completed a Diploma in Graphic
Design and took on a role at a large
format company and then at printing.
com in Wellington. After moving back
to Taranaki, Rachael undertook her
apprenticeship in Digital Processes
for Print.
“I love the diversity and problem
solving side of my job. I am a graphic
designer and print specialist, so I get
to be creative and technical.
“Anything that is printed at my
work comes to me first. It is my role
to be a final quality control check
point. I get to work on all types of
jobs and get to see nearly every step
of each order. Each day is different
which keeps me interested and
excited to go to work.”
Rachael is keen to keep learning
in order to achieve her long-term
goal of becoming a production
manager or art director.
Human resources manager
Christine Frey says Rachael is one
of those staff members one never
needs to worry about.
“She’s reliable and she works for
the benefit of the company.”
Currently overseas with his role at
EIL (Electronic Imaging) held open,
Drew completed his Screen Printing
apprenticeship in August 2014.
Throughout his training Drew was
keen to learn and showed his passion
for screen printing.
His employer says Drew has had
a great attitude towards his training
from the beginning.
“Drew has always been keen to
gain as much knowledge as possible.
He is being trained to become part of
our production team, spending two
hours a day in production planning –
a role he is likely to move into in the
near future.
“He is also team leader for lean
manufacturing initiatives in the
workplace.”
Competenz account manager
Steven Jack says Drew is a very
approachable young man.
“He has a great attitude – his
employer raves about him.”

Business Print covers a major part of our
everyday commercial print needs. From
business cards, letterheads, envelopes
and compliment slips through to high-end
glossy brochures, it embraces the basic
tasks such as producing job sheets, log
books, invoices and statements. The high
end of interaction with the consumer
includes business proposals, company
prospectuses and annual reports. Intricate
areas of security printing require the
ultimate in confidentiality and safeguards
against theft and forgery, such as cheques,
stamps and plastic cards. From basic to
advanced, Business Print provides the
bridge between the company and its
customers.
A job that looked simple, but had every
component done perfectly, has landed the
Business Print Category prize at Pride In
Print for Spectrum Print of Christchurch.
The Market Gardeners Ltd Annual
Review 2014 was a masterpiece of print
perfection, winning unstinting praise from
judges who commented: “An excellent
design and expertly-completed print job.”
The photographs were very well
produced throughout, and clever use
of print techniques was used to pick up
the names of workers and to highlight a
quotation.
Senior judge Fraser Gardyne
described it as “small but perfectly formed”.
“It is one of those jobs that look
simple – but it is simple because every little
thing has been done perfectly,” he said.

declared as “flawless” by Pride In Print
judges who assessed it as the Publications
Category Winner.
The combination of print quality,
good design and attention to detail marked
it as a leader in its class, demonstrating
the power of print to ensure the
photographer’s work is displayed to its
maximum potential to its readership.
Judges said the glossy cover set a
brilliant benchmark for customer appeal,
jumping off the magazine rack.
Senior judge Darren Gallot
summarised the outstanding feature of
the Pro Photographer Magazine as being
the intensity of the colour.
“This is as good as it gets,” he said.
“It’s the kind of thing that would catch the
eye of a consumer browsing in the airport
news stand.”
