WE NEED FOSTER HOMES!
Because Homeward Bound Pug
Rescue does not have a shelter, we
rely solely on our foster homes to
provide a safe and stable temporary
home to get our pugs ready for
adoption.
Because many of our dogs cannot be
immediately adopted the only way
that we can save these animals is
with the help of foster homes. Some
pets will need to be in a foster home
until they can be spayed or neutered,
at which time they are ready for adoption. Pugs who are ill or
injured may need to stay in foster care until they are well
enough for adoption. In some cases, a foster home is needed to
help an animal transition from the stress of a bad situation, such
as a puppy mill, abuse, etc.
The number of animals we can save depends entirely on the
number of people who open their homes and hearts to foster
them. Please consider fostering a pug.

DON’T THINK HEARTWORM
PREVENTATIVE IS NECESSARY?
Many people think that heartworms will not affect
their animals because their animals are kept inside
and aren’t around “strange” animals. Did you know
that this is a major misconception? One in five of
the pugs taken into rescue annually with
Homeward Bound Pug Rescue are heartworm
positive. Some of the heart worm positive pugs are
even owner surrenders where they have been kept
in the house all the time.
Heartworms are transmitted from infected
HEARTWORMS
mosquitoes. Pesky mosquitoes can easily enter
your home when you open your door to let your pet
out to do its business or when you go on a walk in the evenings. How many times have
you been in your house, but still received a mosquito bite?
Heartworms, if left untreated, can be fatal to animals. However, heartworms are
preventable! With a simple heartworm pill once a month, you can protect your pet from
this horrible disease. Heartworm preventative is also very inexpensive (only about
$5 per month) especially considering the treatment cost involved should your pet
develop heartworm disease ($350 to $600).
Heartworm preventative also protects your animal from several other internal parasites
as well. Treating heartworms can also be very long and painful for your pet too. So,
PLEASE, do your pet a favor – keep them on heartworm preventative year-round!
See your vet today and talk to them about heartworm preventative.
Homeward Bound Pug Rescue would like to thank Rockwell Pet Clinic for taking
such great care of our heartworm positive pugs over the last several years.

CHECK OUT THE ADOPTABLE PUGS
Most of our adoptable pugs are here for you to meet.
Not sure who is who?
The adoptable pugs are wearing scrunchies with a
fireworks starburst design and their name on a ribbon.
Several of our wonderful pugs are
featured on the next few pages.
ADOPT ME!
MICK
Mick may not be the
most handsome pug on
the planet but he might
be the sweetest one.
Mick was picked up as
a stray in a small town
in OK. He spent three
weeks at the shelter but
no one came looking for
him. When we picked
him up he was covered
in ticks and very thin.
It was obvious the ticks had been feeding on him for quite some time
and they covered his head and were in his ears.
He is now in foster care and doing great. He has gained weight and
his coat is jet black and shiny. He has a snaggle tooth and his tongue
hangs out all the time but he makes up for his lack of beauty with his
personality. He is a very happy, playful, loving guy. He is good with
other dogs and loves people. He will follow you everywhere.
He has a few medical issues such as dry eye, and he needs knee
surgery but nothing that keeps him from getting around just fine. We
think he is between four and five years old and it appears he hasn’t
had a very good life until now. Mick is making up for lost time and will
make some lucky family a great addition.
Puggerfest 2011 9
GIRARD
Girard was in a local shelter and he
didn’t know why. We don’t either as
he is the sweetest guy.
ADOPT ME!
He gets along with his foster fur
siblings and even loves the cat. He
is such a sweetheart and follows his
foster mom around everywhere. He
doesn’t have to be in your lap but
always has to be close by. He likes
to sleep on a bed on the floor next
to you when you go to bed. He is
just so grateful to be out of the
shelter and get love.
Girard is eager to start his new life. Girard tested positive for
heartworms but has undergone his heartworm treatment and is
good to go. Please consider giving this wonderful boy a home he
can call his own. He just wants love. Do you have in your heart
to give this precious boy a forever home?

DAISY
Daisy is one of the cutest, prettiest
little pugs you have ever seen. She
was surrendered by her previous
family. Her daddy could no longer
keep her and she was sent to his
sister’s home. Daisy had a problem
with the baby tugging on her ears
and tail.
Daisy is about four years old and
just as sweet as can be. She loves
to be on your lap and cuddle with
you at bedtime. She is a very small
girl and if not over fed, will remain that
way. She gets along great with her fur
foster brothers and sisters. Daisy did
test positive for heartworms but has gone through treatment and is ready for
her forever home. Daisy is waiting! Please give this precious girl a new
home for the Holidays!

MY NAME IS MEKA
Remember me?
When I came to Homeward
Bound I was very sick. I had
pretty much given up hope
that I would ever get better.
Most of my beautiful fur was
gone due to infected skin,
my body was constantly in pain and I was kept in a crate most of
the time. I was so embarrassed as I knew I smelled bad. It was
painful for me to walk because my toenails had grown into the
pads on my feet and my eyes and
ears were infected.
But thanks to all the wonderful and
generous people that support
Homeward Bound I was able to get
well and now I must admit I am quite
beautiful, as I am sure you will all
agree. I feel so good now that I will
even play and act silly at times.
Momma Gail says I will soon be
ready to meet my forever
family. I can’t wait!! I just wanted
to say thank you everyone for
continuing to keep me in your
prayers and for helping with all
my expenses so I could get
better. I will never forget your
kindness.
Love, Meka

WHY SHOULD
YOU SPAY AND
NEUTER?
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Because you love your pet!
No unwanted or “oops” litters (or no more “free to
good home” ads on Craigslist!)
No medical expenses for raising kittens or puppies.
Reduce the risk of mammary tumors in females.
No risk of uterine or testicular cancer.
It’s part of nature that animals want to mate.
Having them “fixed” eliminates this desire and
allows them to be more devoted pets.
Know that YOU are helping control pet
overpopulation.
Reduce the risk of male dogs and cats marking and
roaming (twice as many males as females are
injured or killed by automobiles.)
• Longer lifespan, healthier pet.

P-Nutt
(Formerly known as Evan)
P-Nutt, you came into our lives 3 years ago as a temporary foster.
You were heartworm positive, your fur was rough and coarse and
you had a big gaping sore on your neck from a bite wound. You
didn’t know how to play and you sure didn’t know how to accept
love. I told myself that I didn’t want to love you as you were only
“temporary”. However each and every day I grew to love you
more than I could imagine. You so badly wanted affection, but
just weren’t sure how to accept it or show it.
We saw you through the horrible heartworm treatment and slowly
watched you come around and begin to be the pug you were
always meant to be. Over the last 3 years you have blossomed
into a wonderful, happy, healthy playful, snuggly pug.
You make our family complete. I cannot think what life would
be without you. Thank you Homeward Bound for placing this
wonderful boy in our home! He has given our family more joy
than we can ever imagine.

“pug in a bag”,
“pug in a tub”,
and mostly
“pug in our hearts”.
We shall always remember you.

MAKAYLA
Our precious Makayla was
destined to be with us because
she had so much to teach us.
One day in early June 2005, I
was strolling through the kennels
of our local humane society when
I laid eyes on her. She was one
scraggly looking little girl, but all I
saw was how beautiful she was inside and out. She was scared
and uncomfortable but she
promptly walked over and kissed
my hand.
Kayla easily settled into our family
and bonded deeply with our other pug,
Diesel. When we adopted her, I
promised Makayla she’d never again go
without anything, that she’d never again
know pain or sadness. She was one
pampered princess, just as she was born
to be. Kayla blossomed with us - and my
husband still talks about how she was the
most perfect dog and she was.
Makayla was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy in early 2010. After her
diagnosis, we knew her time with us
would be limited and after getting over
the initial shock of her diagnosis, we
promised her that we’d only do what was
best for her and when she was ready,
we’d let her go.
We also committed to living in the
moment with her - to cherish every single
day we had with her. And wow, what
an amazing way to live life! Makayla
was a blessing to us - she taught us to
slow down and live in the moment, to
be thankful for what we have (not cry
for what we don’t have), to keep going
despite the obstacles life gives us. She
also taught us that “handicapped” wasn’t
in her vocabulary.
When she’d wake up and find her leg
strength had deteriorated a little since the
day before, she’d just get up and go on
about her day the best she could with the
limitations she had that day. She never
once laid down and felt sorry for herself.
Never once cried because she was no
longer able to run around the yard like
she used to. Never once whimpered
because she could no longer walk up the
steps on her own. She simply held her
head high while she limped around the
yard and waited patiently for mommy to
carry her up the steps.
When we said goodbye to Makayla on
February 12, 2011, she was surrounded
by love and we were comforted
knowing that she was our angel who
would watch over us. I’m just always in
awe of how much my little 20 pound pug
taught me about life. And I’m thankful
every single day that I was blessed to
have my Kayla to teach me these life
lessons.

M
OSEY’S EXCELLENT
ADVENTURE
This is the story of Mosey the
Apricot Pug, a fragile little man who
we dearly miss. Mosey started life
as a stud dog in an OK puppy mill.
When he was no longer useful, the
owner turned him over to Homeward
Bound Pug Rescue. But years
living in a crate had made Mosey shy,
withdrawn, and blind in one eye. He
didn’t know how to relate to the other
pugs in the rescue and didn’t know
how to play, or even what a toy was.
Gail named him Moses because of
his quiet, calm demeanor.
Gail wanted Moses to be in a foster
home with fewer pugs and where
he could get more attention, so she
asked Kathe and I to foster him. He
soon made himself at home with
our two female pugs and us and we
quickly grew fond of him. We started
calling him Mosey – a “happier” name
than Moses.
Mosey was fitting into our pack so
well (and stealing our hearts), that
we actually thought about adopting
him. But after he was with us for two
weeks or so, Gail told us Mosey was
going to be adopted. We were sad,
but at the same time, we were trying
hard to not be “foster failures”.
So our dear Mosey then began his
“excellent adventure”. Off he went
to Green Bay to stay with Aunt Mary
for a few weeks. Then a young lady
(with two young sons) picked him
up at Mary’s on her way to her new
home in a small town in eastern
Oregon.
20 Puggerfest 2011
We missed our Mosey, but continued
to foster HWB pugs. Then one night
Gail called with big news! The lady in
Oregon wanted to give Mosey back
to HWB! It seems her two young
boys were just too much for gentle,
shy Mosey. But how to get him
back? Kathe and I told Gail we would
call her right back, and then began
hatching a plan. Mosey was going to
come home where he belonged! We
had been given a second chance!
“Foster failures” we would be!
Kathe and I came up with a plan to fly
Mosey and his “owner” to OK, then
fly the young lady back to Oregon.
There were more than a few
dollars involved, but we called Gail
and outlined our plans to her. Gail
agreed that HWB could help us with
part of the expenses.
We got our dear, sweet Mosey back
to live out the rest of his life in our
loving home with our two females
and assorted HWB fosters. We lost
our precious Mosey last Nov. We
miss him dearly, but have many fond
memories of our gentle little man.
