"THE LORD WILL BE PASSING BY": In the first book of Kings chapter 19 today's first reading, Elijah
is to be found in the depths of despair, his mission from God having so often met with
frustration, he finally returns to the source of his faith; Mt Sinai where the great Moses before
him met God in the burning bush. But God does not come to Elijah in fire as he did Moses or
strong wind or earthquake for that matter. The Lord comes to Elijah in a gentle breeze,
"a whispering sound" a "still small voice".
I love this story of Elijah. It provides insight into what to do when we are overcome with what
appears to be rejection, failure, grief, in spite of all our efforts to live our faith. With all Gods
prophets killed and Elijah himself being hunted down he withdraws into the wilderness in great
poverty of spirit, where he lies down to die. But God did not give him permission to do so,
instead God asks him what does he think he is doing? The Lord sends him back renewed,
reinvigorated for the final stage of his mission.
God appeared to Elijah in a whispering breeze of the night, to St Paul in and through his
conscience (Romans 9), and to the apostles so fearful as if they have seen a ghost, (Matthew 14).
He is present in the ordinary lives of people. Jesus is no ghost. He is real, alive. Faith is not fearful,
but rather it is responsive, on the look out, watching, waiting, trusting, courageous, believing He
will come to us and be present in the lives of those around us and the circumstances we find
ourselves because we seek his presence first of all in prayer, at Mass. We have so easily become
accustomed to the removal or absence of God in all the political and economical posturing we
take, so often to the disadvantage of many, opening the way into sin. Personal interest and abuse
are common place even in the Church which has been tossed about in the storm, yet the Lord is
present amongst us. His love is never ending without measure.
In the words of Pope Francis: "the Lord has entrusted his message of salvation to human beings,
to all of us, as witnesses; and it is in our brothers and sisters with their gifts and their limits, that
it comes towards us and is revealed to us. And this is what belonging to the Church means.
Remember: being Christian means belonging to the Church".

WITH GRATITUDE: Having reunited with you after two month leave, I am pleasantly surprised by the remarkable effort
made by parishioners in spite of your busy lives, to keep the doors open in my absence. Whilst it is a common practice
to find a replacement priest when taking leave, we have not done so primarily because we have such a valued resource
in our Parish Secretary and Catechist for whom we are all most grateful. A good supply of priests availed themselves in
order that Mass could be offered weekends and even on one occasion during the week. I am extremely grateful to
those priests: Monsignor Aitken who celebrated Vigil Mass and to Fr Welling, Fr Thoroughgood, Fr Small who came to
St Anthony's for Sunday Mass. Wednesday Benediction was served by both Fr Macaffery and Fr Wee from St Peter Clavier Dulwich. Monsignor Egar kindly offered Requiem Mass for Mrs Deidre Burt
Nothing amazing happened during my leave, unless you count the behaviour of Lucy our pound Beagle who has been
with us these past few years. I discovered upon returning after just a few days away, that she had somehow opened
the door of the freezer in the shed and ate a whole leg of lamb. Quite apart from the fact it was frozen solid, the freezer door is always temperamental and usually a requires a firm hand to open it. How Lucy was so successful is beyond
belief. I had bought this particular leg of lamb on special only the week before and thought it would go down well at a
family gathering upon our return. Next time away I won't bother with special arrangements for feeding her, instead
l'll simply point out where the water bowl is located and suggest she just help herself to the fridge!
NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK 2014
This week the Catholic Church here in Australia celebrates “National Vocations Awareness
Week” in which we give thanks to God for those serving in our Parishes and Church as priests,
deacons and religious Sisters and Brothers. It also gives us the opportunity to pray for more
vocations to the priesthood and religious life. I ask that you continue to pray for vocations, as
it is vital in our church. Join us in praying for vocations,
Jesus, you are the Good Shepherd who is always mindful of your Church. Watch over those who are baptised in
your name, and grant peace and harmony to all families. We ask you to choose from the families of our parish
many priests, sisters and brothers who will gladly spend their lives in making you known and loved. Amen .
The disciples cry out to Jesus in their distress, Lord save me.
