On behalf of the Owen County Chamber of Commerce and Economic
Development Corporation, I would like to welcome you! We are
pleased that you have shown interest in joining as a Member.
As a Chamber Member, you are joining us in our commitment to
provide a positive, proactive business environment within our community. We value your experience, knowledge and opinions to help
us become the best organization that we can be.
It is our hope that you will become familiar with the OCCC and all
our activities. Our monthly board meetings are the first Wednesday
of each month. In addition to our meetings, we have Owen After
Hours events throughout the year, as well as fundraising events. Our
annual Member Awards Banquet is held in October. Look for our
Chamber eUpdate Email to be sent out each month with local community events. These events will give you an opportunity to build
relationships with other fellow Chamber members.

The Owen County Chamber of Commerce is an alliance of businesses

Credibility – A study conducted by the Schapiro Group found Chamber Membership to have
positive and powerful benefits for small business members:
Consumers are 80% more likely to purchase goods or services from a company that is a Chamber
member.
Consumers show an increase in awareness of small businesses that are Chamber members by 73%.
Businesses enjoy a 68% increase in their reputation when consumers know they are a Chamber


Advocacy – The Chamber is your community voice. We are an advocate on important local,
state and federal issues that affect businesses and the quality of life in Owen County. Legislative
breakfasts are a great opportunity to network with elected officials and let your views be heard.

Networking – There are numerous networking opportunities for you to promote your business,
such as the Owen After Hours. This is a great way to make connections with other businesses in
your area.

Exposure – As a member of the Chamber, we publish your information in many ways to bring
the exposure you need to your businesses. You can expand your potential customers through
our internet and business directory listings, and low-cost advertising opportunities through our
annual directory, county map projects and sponsorships. Business referrals to Chamber
members are given top priority in response to potential customer inquiries. If you have an
event that is important to you, we will help you celebrate! Ground breakings, ribbon cuttings
and grand openings are included in your membership.

Business Mentoring – There are many resources and classes available for your entrepreneurial
endeavors. We can connect you with our trusted advisors through SCORE and SBDC to assist you
with your business plan, funding, marketing tips and to offer valuable business advice. These are
free, confidential, one-on-one meetings at the Chamber office.

Stay Informed – The Chamber offers a monthly e-Update through various forms of marketing,
social media support and email notification.

Annual Awards Banquet – This event allows members to reflect on the past year’s achievements, recognize award
winners for their service, introduce the goals and initiatives for the upcoming year and welcomes incoming leadership.
We offer a relaxed, casual atmosphere, with a catered meal, event themes, games and our Silent Auction.

Showcase Owen County - The Chamber of
Commerce partners with the Purdue Extension
Office to hold an event that will showcase the businesses of Owen County. Last
year we had over 50+ vendors who set up and were able to meet and greet with people from all over the County.
Booth space is available with electric on a first come first serve basis.

$15 for civic or nonprofit organizations
Back to School Expo – New in 2015, this event offers educational, recreational and informational resources to the
families of Owen County. Businesses will have the opportunity to promote their services and products that appeal to
parents with children. Financial institutions, health care providers, day care/camp providers, sport leagues, youth
groups and many more are invited to participate.

Chamber of Commerce Week – The Indiana Chamber of Commerce recognizes the first week of May to celebrate the
individual Chambers of Commerce in Indiana. We offer an ice cream social, coloring contest, giveaways and more
during this event.

Legislative Breakfast – Public forum designed to learn about our Legislator’s key issues, ask questions and discuss

SMALL BUSINESS
SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives)
For over 50 years, SCORE has been a premier source of free and confidential small business advice for
entrepreneurs and small businesses. SCORE mentors provide general business advice on every aspect of business
planning, start-up, management, growth, even selling and exiting. Volunteers also offer low-cost workshops to
provide aspiring entrepreneurs with additional training on specific business topics. SCORE’s Simple Steps for
Starting Your Business and Simple Steps for Growing Your Business educational programs are available and help
entrepreneurs determine the viability of their idea or assist in the growth process of existing businesses.
All SCORE mentors honor the client’s right to proprietary and confidential information. All discussions and
documents remain confidential.
SCORE’s Veterans Fast Launch program (www.vetsfastlaunch.org) is a combined package of training
scholarships, free software and services combined with SCORE’s mentoring program in order to help accelerate
the ability of veterans and their families to start and succeed as small business owners.
How does one become a SCORE mentor?
The Owen County SCORE office currently has 6, experienced business mentors on staff. If you are interested in
becoming one of our volunteer business mentors, visit www.score.org/volunteer and complete the application.
Your local SCORE leader will contact you for an interview. If you are a good fit, you will be asked to complete the
SCORE training and onboarding process. This includes a 3-month probationary period where you’ll complete 2-3
online training modules, review and agree to the SCORE standard operating manual and code of ethics, shadow
experienced mentors, and participate in team mentoring. In addition to mentoring, there are roles for which you
may volunteer, including workshop facilitator, community outreach, marketing and administrative roles.

Appointments are preferred on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 10:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Consideration will be
given to alternate dates and times as needed.
ISBDC (Indiana Small Business Development Center)
The Indiana Small Business Development Center is a government agency that helps grow the economy of Indiana
by providing entrepreneurs with education, information and tools necessary to build successful businesses. Examples include free demographic business reports to help estimate a company’s target market, industry marketing reports to help identify macro national trends and financial analysis reports that compare a firm’s performance to other businesses in their industry. You can meet an ISBDC business advisor for FREE to discuss your
new business idea or obtain assistance with your existing business.
