On February 8, 2014, members and friends of the Alberta Iron Indians
Pontiac Club (Edmonton Chapter) visited the Bodnar Collection hosted
by Ron, Danin and Conrad Bodnar.
An entrance admission total of approximately $400 was taken and will
be turned over to our charity – STARS.
Ron and his family started the hobby of collecting back in 1976 which
includes articles such as cars, tractors, toys, music (juke) boxes, TV’s,
guns and all types and brands of soda pop machines. It has taken
them 5 years to set up the museum as it stands today.
Behind the wall on the main floor are a number of theme rooms – a
general store, barber shop and a soda shop with memorabilia for CocaCola, Orange Crush, 7-Up, Canada Dry and Pepsi Cola including an ice
cream parlor and café.
Also on the main floor Ron keeps some of his collection of 13 Franklins
with seven completed and the remainder are parts cars or restoration
projects. Ron also has a couple of 1955 completely restored Chevrolet
Bel Air cars – one convertible and the other a hard top. Mixed with his
collection of Thunderbirds and Ford pony cars is a North Star service
station, Rexall drug store, Red Indian/McColl-Frontenac service station
and various brands of gas pumps – too many to count.

Ron’s wife, Danin, who has a dress and hat shop, invited the ladies to see her extensive collection of early 20th century dresses/gowns/wedding dresses and christening outfits. Also of great
interest were shoes, purses and jewellery from the early 1900’s.
Upstairs, hundreds of cowboy toys are highlighted by walls full of toy guns and holsters. Next is
an extensive series of assembled Meccano sets. Also an overwhelming assortment of Canadian made Lincon and mini toys and pressed metal toy trucks.
Ron also has a room upstairs that has an exclusive collection of flint lock (black powder) rifles
and pistols dating back to the civil war. Also there is a Telegraph office display.
Back downstairs, Ron has expanded the east of the stage and added another room (which I
called the tractor room). Ron has a couple of reconditioned 2-wheel drive John Deere tractors
with a lot of metal oil signs hanging from the walls and rows of tin and glass oil containers along
with a selection of oil pumps. What a room!!!
This is the third time that Phyllis and I have been to the Bodnar`s Collection and it keeps growing every time.
What a great place for photo ops – also the facility is available for bookings around Christmas
with an all catered event.
I`m sure that all the members who attended the Bodnar Collection from the Alberta Iron Indians
Pontiac Club (Edmonton Chapter) would like to thank the Bodnar family for sharing their outstanding collection with us. Can`t wait until the next time,.

Pontiac Race News
With the long winter finally coming to an end, some members have been able to get our
cars out for a quick cruise after a 7 month hibernation. Members have been busy working
on their Pontiacs improving performance, new paint, accessories etc. This includes member John Damp and his 1970 GTO Race car.
As you know from last season, John had some issues with oil evacuation on his IAII engine during last years limited season. His Engine was pulled this winter and brought to
Pro Max Performance, AIIPC member Marty Cochrane’s business for inspection. It was
discovered that the engine had some sealing issues on the valley pan and timing cover
resulting on poor suction on the Engine Vacuum pump.
Marty went through the engine and buttoned everything up and resealed the Valley Pan,
Timing Cover, inspected bottom and top end of the engine and gave John two thumbs up.
With work commitments the installation of the 540 CI were slightly delayed and work installing the engine didn’t really start until April, after a couple of weekends working on installing the engine, all the major components were buttoned up. AIIPC member Jerry
Stanic offered his expertise a couple of Saturdays ago and Engine and Transmission fit
like a glove.

(the Master Jerry Stanic at work)
(John with the IAII ready to take to Pro-max Performance)
The Engine should be ready for firing by the end of May and off to Castrol Raceway for
testing.
John is looking forward to race in Medicine Hat in June for the NHRA Big Bucks Race as
a warm up to the IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals at Castrol Raceway July 4 th to 6th.
Also the NHRA will be having an event at the new race way in Rimbey in Sept. With 3
tracks in Alberta we should see more racing this summer.
I have often been asked how to get into Drag Racing. The easiest way is head to Castrol
with your Pontiac on a Friday Night, bring a helmet and attend the Street Legal Drags, it’s
a great time and the cost is minimal at 30 bucks for car and driver. Once you get the
racing bug it becomes an obsession.
Next month look forward to an article on AIIPC Members Susan and Charles Fourgere
and the 1968 Firebird, street race car.

March 3, 2012 we purchased our 1939 Pontiac
Chieftain at Edmonton Auto Show Classic Car Auction. The Auction was run by Electric Garage Auctions. It was an overcast day so we decided to go
check out the Auto Show for something to do.
While looking around we came across the auction
area. Bad idea!
Having been to many farm and cattle autions, I
never fail to get a bidding number. There were all
kinds of cars to look at, from restored 1920’s vehicles to hot rods, pickups and muscle cars.
As I was walking around looking at the auction vehicles, I came to the 1939 Pontiac Chieftan. At first I thought …‖hmmm nice car, but it’s a
four door‖. So I continued on. The next time around I took another look and was impressed
with the ―elegant‖ look of the car. This encouraged me to step behind the rope and take a
closer look. I came away thinking this custom car was a great mix of class and style.
Having recently sold a portion of our farm, we had a little money to spend and I always
wanted a bit of a car collection. So with that in mind we found a place to sit and watch the
auction.
Now, to be clear, we didn’t actually ―plan‖ on buying a car but when you have money available, and you’re at an auction, and you have a bidding number….things tend to happen. At
least where we’re concerned.
When the 39 rolled onto the platform, I was quite taken by how it looked in motion. At about
that time they announced that there was NO RESERVE on this lot. Big Shwag was the guy
catching bids in the stands where we
were sitting in, so I thought it would
be fun to throw a few bids in and see
what happens. The bids were also
stalling out at $15,000.

I said to Denise ―why don’t we chase this up a ways just for fun. It’s going to sell quite high
I bet‖. She said ―sure‖! When they dropped the hammer and said ―SOLD‖ I thought….‖OH
CRAP! We bought a car!‖ It went considerably cheaper than I expected!
We stuck around for a few more vehicles to go through the auction block. Well, at that point
we had Auction Fever and Big Shwag came and sat with us again….we ended up buying
our 1970 Duster. We figured it was time to leave the stands or we might end up with a third
car. We chose to leave the stands. We went to go find our purchases and look them over a
bit.
The next day we went and picked both cars up. It wasn’t until the Pontiac was safely in our
garage that we opened up the trunk and found a huge sub-woofer speaker in it. We looked
at each other and asked ―where’s the stereo?‖ A few minutes later we found it hidden in the
dash. The radio doesn’t work but the cd player sounds really sweet!
We were looking into fixing a few things on the car and found the previous owner’s information. We called him up and asked a few questions and he said he had a box of parts for the
car and if we wanted it he would sell them to us. We jumped on the offer and drove into
the city to meet the guy. He told us the story of the car. It was originally from Eastern Canada and was Red. He purchased it and brought it out here. He didn’t like the color so he
decided to change it. It took 6 samples of paint before they got the beautiful colors it is today.
We had to have the transmission and engine worked on. Sill plates were specially made for
it by Precision Manufacturing in Westlock. We drive it as much as possible and really enjoy
our purchase. We wish our driving season was longer!

Dear Editor: Since you will not answer to any complains until the second Tuesday of next
week, I am left with making up a complimentary notice here.
I’ve never been much of a ―joiner‖ of clubs and such, but too a chance on buying an
AIIPC Edmonton membership once —-on the belief that birds of a feather should fly together — and have, in fact, renewed it a couple of times.
Why, you ask? Sometimes I wonder myself. This group is rife with witty ones quick to
engage in banter that can border on the abusive. At the least, it can be bruising to one’s
ego. Fair warning: Arm yourselves with a quiver full of quips and zingers in order to stand
up to these wags! Otherwise, I have nothing to complain about.

President’s Corner
Hi Members,
I am looking forward to another great year full of lots of events and the endless quality camaraderie among AllPC Edmonton Members.
Our 2013 Christmas party was good and the gifts were interesting plaques with about 55
members attending!
Through the winter and spring we had two road trips; the Bodner Collect was well received.
Our tour of the Iron Garage was also very good. This type of outing is a nice way to break
up the winter boredom.
World of Wheels show in Calgary was great with the display coming in 3 rd place! All the
cars entered looked super! At the display, Calgary AllPC arranged to have an auction which
raised $1,757.00 for the veteran’s food bank. As well as the monies raised, Calgary and
Edmonton both added another $250.00 each. It is good that as clubs we can contribute to
these charities.
I am looking forward to another summer of cruising with club members!

World of wheels
February is called the sad month, with high rates of depression being reported. It has
been 5 months of winter already and even worse than that, it has been 5 months of not seeing hot rods and muscle cars, who wouldn't be in a depression, but there is an oasis in this
white desert called the World of Wheels.
Excited like two teenage boys and their first date, Dave and I take the trek down to Calgary to get a look of brightly painted muscle cars and an array of cars from North America.
The excitement just continues as we enter the BMO Centre and see the cars on display with
their commentaries and seeing old friends which we haven't seen for awhile.
There was the Alberta Iron Indians Club display. The theme this year was a Barrett Jackson Auction we named ours Poncho Jackson's, with cars on the block and an Auctioneer on
hand. The live auction consisted of donated items and the proceeds of $1,750.00 and an additional $250.00 donated by the Club was given to The Veterans Food Bank. The feature
item at the auction was a die cast of a 1966 GTO that was signed by Jim Wangers that
brought in $400.
The third day was award day and the Club received third place for its display. Every year
the Calgary Chapter comes up with a great theme, kudos to the group. The third day is bittersweet as it is time to load up the cars and go back home. Not to mention the weather was
-25 , but that did not stop us from loading 2 cars up and getting them back to Edmonton
safely.
If you looking for something to do to wash away those February blues in 2015, may I suggest a trip down to Calgary to the World of Wheels I know. I will be and maybe see you there.

The Iron Garage
PONTIAC IRONY UNCOVERED AT THE IRON GARAGE
To most people The Iron Garage isn’t any art gallery. But it surely was to the
dozen or 15 AIIPC members who toured the Stony Plain “hot rod shop” last March
29th.
The group was awe-struck. The normally boisterous bunch of car nuts behaved
more like pious monks in a monastery. To them, THIS WAS art. Most of the works of
art in the display were created by The Iron Garage’s build manager, Bart VanRootselaar, a Stony Plain home-grown whose name is, appropriately, no different from
that of a Dutch Master.
Among the collection were some of the sweetest, shiniest, brand-newish looking
hot rods you’ll see anywhere. Particular among them is an orange-painted ’32 roadster that was The Iron Garage’s first build project when the enterprise opened in
the summer of 2006. “As the project developed,” says Bart, “we were getting busier doing work for clients. But we’re expecting to show the car this summer.”
Other projects over the last 7 1/2-plus years also took priorities as Bart expanded his sales offering to clientele he developed. “We try to accommodate every
price range and style that people look for.”
The Iron Garage has built popular pick-up trucks that are offered for sale in the
$21,000 price range. Bart’s pitch is that one can probably buy one of his projects
for little more or even less money than it would take, these days, to restore any
classic car on their own.
Roadsters, pick-ups, coupes, hard-tops and convertibles, about 30 in all standing on parade for inspection. Conspicuous among them are some from the personal
collections of VanRootselaar’s car-crazy business partners, Wayne Battle and
Larry Thompson, both Stony Plain construction contracting entrepreneurs.
Thompson’s display cars include a 1969 Dodge Charger. Powered by a 426 Hemi
engine and 4-speed tranny, it is one of only 15 factory-builts coloured in bronzybrown exterior and brown interior.
Another is a 1961 Chevrolet Impala bought at a Barrett-Jackson sale from the
collection of “Mr. October” Reggie Jackson.
“It seems to me,” said AIIPC Edmonton founding president Dave Scragg to Bart,
“that you have a dream job. Do you?”
“Definitely. It’s definitely a dream job,” laughed VanRootselaar. “I just wish I
could pick the days you’re needed to do the job.”
Clearly, Bart has a gift for mechanics, but he’s worked hard to achieve his dream
job. As a kid, he’d amaze his mother by tearing things like a lawnmower apart, and
leaving her horrified that it’d never get back together again.
“I’d have it running perfectly a little later. But I learned real fast that it’s smarter
to take things apart and rebuild them in stages.”
I s s u e
1 6
P a g e
2 1
Bart rebuilt his first car, a street rod, when he was 13 years old. ―I was preparing for the
day I’d have my licence and could drive a cool car‖. And, when he got his driver’s licence, did
a little drag racing on the Golf Course Road. Now, his son Jordan 21, drag races his own ’82
S-10 (which Jordan built when he was 14 years old) in the Friday night Street Legal drags at
Castrol Raceway.
Jordan works with his Dad at The Iron Garage and next door at the Stealth tune-up specialty shop, which Bart has also set up with a car-enthusiast partner.
Right out of school, Bart VanRootselaar began a mechanic apprenticeship at Grove
Pontiac. Starting out on the wash rack, over the next 21 years Bart had worked himself up to
the top mechanics management job there. And he was building cars at home until he decided to make the big leap into setting up The Iron Garage and his ―dream job.‖
Photos by Denise Briggs
There is, however, something very ironic about Bart and his Iron Garage. Something
that some of our club members asked about. Where are the Pontiacs in The Iron Garage?
Bart’s first car he built at 13 was a ’73 Pontiac Lemans. While at Grove Pontiac, he built
two Lemans (’69 and ’70) plus a 1967 Firebird. Bart has made 14 complete builds at Iron
Garage; none – ironically - a Pontiac.
That neglect, he promises, will be corrected as soon as his current projects are caught
up. ―I’d love to build a ’68 Judge,‖ he confessed.
