CELEBRATING THE LORD’S DAY
On Sunday, we gather as the Body of Christ to celebrate the Lord’s Day, the day of Christ’s Resurrection:
As “the first day of the week” (Mk 16:2) it recalls the first creation; and as the “eighth day,” which follows the Sabbath, it symbolizes the new
creation ushered in by the Resurrection of Christ. To us, it has become for Christians the first of all days and of all feasts. It is the day of the
Lord in which he with his Passover fulfilled the spiritual truth of the Jewish Sabbath and proclaimed man’s eternal rest in God. (Compendium
of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 452)
The Scriptures tell us that Jesus rose on the first day of the week - the day following the Jewish Sabbath. Shortly after daybreak, the
women found the tomb empty and Jesus risen from the dead. Jesus’ death and Resurrection opened for us the doors of salvation. Sharing in
Jesus’ death in Baptism, we hope to share in his Resurrection. We become a new creation in Christ. It is that new creation which we celebrate
on Sunday:
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad. (Ps 118:24)
Each Sunday is a “little Easter” -a celebration of the central mysteries of our faith.
THE SUNDAY EUCHARIST
The primary way in which we celebrate the Lord’s Day is with our participation in the Sunday Eucharist. What better way to celebrate
the Resurrection of the Lord than by celebration of the memorial of his Passion, death, and Resurrection?
This celebration is not a solitary, private event. Instead, we come together as the People of God, the Church, to worship with one
heart and one voice. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) teaches that “participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday
Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church” (CCC, no. 2182).
When members of our church community are absent from this gathering, they are missed. No member of the faithful should be
absent from the Sunday Eucharist without a serious reason. The Liturgy should be the first thing on Sunday’s schedule, not the last. We
should arrive on time, prepared in mind and heart to fully participate in the Mass. Those who cannot attend because of illness or the need to
care for infants or the sick deserve our prayers and special attention.
Often, people will suggest that going to Sunday Mass is not necessary. After all, they can pray at home just as well. This has clearly
been an issue in the Church for more than a millennium. In the fourth century, St. John Chrysostom addressed this problem directly:
You cannot pray at home as at church, where there is a great multitude, where exclamations are cried out to God as
from one great heart, and where there is something more: the union of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity, the prayers of the
priests. (CCC, no. 2179, quoting St. John Chrysostom, De incomprehensibili 3, 6: PG 48, 725)
Private prayer, though essential to the spiritual life, can never replace the celebration of the eucharistic Liturgy and the reception of
Holy Communion.
In some communities, the lack of priests makes it impossible to celebrate the Eucharist each Sunday. In such instances, the bishop
may make provision for these parish communities to gather and celebrate the Liturgy of the Word or the Liturgy of the Hours. These Sunday
celebrations in the absence of a priest may or may not include the reception of Holy Communion. Still, these celebrations allow the People of
God to gather and keep holy the Lord’s Day.
KEEPING SUNDAY - ALL DAY
Celebrating the Sunday Eucharist - though central and essential - does not complete our observance of Sunday. In addition to
attending Mass each Sunday, we should also refrain “from those activities which impede the worship of God and disturb the joy proper to the
day of the Lord or the necessary relaxation of mind and body” (Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 453).
Sunday has traditionally been a day of rest. However, the concept of a day of rest may seem odd in a world that runs 24/7, where
we are tethered to our jobs by a variety of electronic gadgets, where businesses run as normal no matter what the day of the week, and where
silence seems to be an endangered species. By taking a day each week to rest in the Lord, we provide a living example to the culture that all
time belongs to God and that people are more important than things.
As Pope John Paul II said in Dies Domini (The Day of the Lord), his apostolic letter on Sunday:
Through Sunday rest, daily concerns and tasks can find their proper perspective: the material things about which we
worry give way to spiritual values; in a moment of encounter and less pressured exchange, we see the true face of the people with whom we
live. Even the beauties of nature - too often marred by the desire to exploit, which turns against man himself - can be rediscovered and
enjoyed to the full. (Dies Domini, no. 67)
Not everyone has the freedom to take Sundays away from work. Some people, including medical professionals and public safety
workers, must work on Sundays to keep the rest of us safe and healthy. Others must work for economic reasons beyond their control.
Resting on Sunday does not mean that we are inactive. Instead,
Sunday is traditionally consecrated by Christian piety to good works and humble service of the sick, the infirm,
and the elderly. Christians will also sanctify Sunday by devoting time and care to their families and relatives, often difficult to do on other days
of the week. Sunday is a time for reflection, silence, cultivation of the mind, and meditation which furthers the growth of the Christian interior
life. (CCC, no. 2186)
To celebrate the Lord’s Day more fully, consider trying the following:
✠✠ Don’t use Sunday as your catch-all day for errands and household chores.
✠✠ Share a family dinner after Mass. Have the whole family join in the preparation and cleanup.
✠✠ Go for a walk or bike ride and give thanks to God for the beauty of nature.
✠✠ Spend time reading the Bible or a spiritual book.
✠✠ Pray the Rosary or the Liturgy of the Hours, alone or with others.
✠✠ Volunteer in a local food pantry.
✠✠ Visit parishioners and others who are homebound.
✠✠ Read Bible stories to your children.
✠✠ Turn off your gadgets and enjoy the silence.
As we take time each week to celebrate the Paschal Mystery in the Eucharist and to rest from the burdens of our daily lives, we
remind ourselves that we are made in the image and likeness of God who “rested on the seventh day from all the work he had
undertaken” (Gn 2:2). REFERENCES: Catechism of the Catholic Church (2nd ed.). Washington, DC: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2000. Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic

Msgr. Laserian Byrne
June 22, 1924 - May 20, 2011
Born and raised in Ireland, Msgr. Byrne attended all Hallows Seminary in Dublin and was
ordained a priest on June 20, 1948. From Ireland, he traveled to California to work for the Diocese of
Fresno.
He was assigned as Assistant Pastor to Our Lady of Mercy, Merced, Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Fresno, and St
Francis in Bakersfield. He first became a Pastor in 1960 at St. Francis Parish Mojave. While he was there he supervised
construction of a new mission church in Boron. Msgr. Byrne was Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Clovis from
1966-1970, where he supervised the completion of the parochial school. He was Pastor of St Helen’s for 11 years, during
which time an addition of the parish hall was constructed. He joined St Ann’s in Riverdale in 1981.
Msgr. was assigned to St. Anthony of Padua Parish in June 1991 until May 1998. He completed many major
building additions to the school and parish. Working with Parish Finance Committee, Msgr. was instrumental in
maintaining a sound economic financial plan, scholarships for Catholic Education at St. Anthony Elementary and San
Joaquin Memorial High School, as well and investment and capital campaigns. Msgr. made a tremendous difference to
our parish community, especially with his wit and warmth and spiritual guidance.
Msgr. Byrne mentioned that he was inspired to enter the priesthood because of his family background. “We
prayed the rosary and shared many other prayers. The leadership role of the priest in Ireland was very inspirational, and
it was a time of great missionary work.’ When asked about the highlights of his life, Mgr Byrne said there were many, but
he felt that seeing people come into the Church or returning to the Church was the most rewarding. “I enjoy being there
with the people, sharing the good and the bad.” He also expressed pride in the many construction projects he was
involved in, as prior mentioned, and those still in progress, most importantly, Msgr. Byrne stated “I would like to build a
strong community of faith and inspire everyone to live the Gospel.”
Prayer for the selection for our new Bishop
Almighty God, Send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of
the Diocese of Fresno.
May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and
most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus.
We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and that Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we
make through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Mary, Mother of Jesus
Mary, Mother of Jesus, give me your heart so beautiful, so pure,
so immaculate, that I may be able to receive Jesus in the Bread
of Life, love Him as you loved Him, and serve Him as you
served Him in the distressing disguise of the poorest of the poor.
Amen.
Banns of Marriage
The following couple will marry in the coming weeks:
Kyle Rodrigues and Brittany Ward
If you know of any canonical reason for them not to be married,
please contact the parish office.
“How can I ever express the happiness of a marriage
joined by the Church, strengthened by an offering, sealed
by a blessing, announced by angels, and ratified by the
Father?. . . How wonderful the bond between two
believers, now one in hope, one in desire, one in discipline,
one in the same service! They are both children of one
Father and servants of the same Master, undivided in
spirit and flesh, truly two in one flesh. Where the flesh is
one, one also is the spirit.”
NEWLY BAPTIZED INFANTS
We welcome the infants who were recently

Scripture
Then they laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. (Acts 8:17)
Say to God, "How tremendous are your deeds! (Psalm 66:3)
Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit. (1 Peter 3:18b)
...and he will give you an Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of
Truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows
him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you.
(John 14:6,7)
Reflection
How do you witness the gifts of the spirit in your life, family and parish
How is the “Advocate,” the “Spirit of Truth,” brought to life in you?
In John’s Gospel, why can’t the world accept the “Spirit of Truth?”
When are you dwelling in the Spirit or in the world? How do you know?
To come to possess all desire to possess nothing.
To arrive at being all desire to be nothing.
The soul that journeys to God
but does not shake off its cares
and quiet its appetites
is like one who drags a cart uphill. 1

After the angel Gabriel had announced to Mary that she was to
become the mother of Our Lord, Mary went from Galilee to Judea to visit
her kinswoman Elizabeth, soon to be the mother of John the Baptist.
This visit is recorded in Luke 1:39-56. Elizabeth greeted Mary with the
words, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your
womb." Mary burst forth with the song of praise which we call the
Magnificat, beginning, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord." We
are told that even John the Baptist, still unborn, leaped for joy in his
mother's womb. Thus we are shown, side by side, the two women, one
seemingly too old to have a child, but destined to bear the last prophet of
the Old Covenant, of the age that was passing away; and the other
woman, seemingly not ready to have a child, but destined to bear the
One Who was Himself the beginning of the New Covenant, the age that
would not pass away.

THE RIGHT
CONNECTION
In the days when most
people could not read or
write, storytellers kept the
community connected with tales that were
entertaining, thought provoking, and
informative. Nowadays public storytelling
is almost a forgotten art. Instead, we are
snowed under with information, news, and
commentary by everybody about
everything around the clock. Against this
background, many of us must “multitask”
in an attempt to be more productive and
efficient. We try to get as many things done
at one time as we possibly can in order to
make a little free time for ourselves. Every
parent knows how to multitask! But with
the rise of the Internet, blogs, texting, and
Twittering, something new is emerging,
which has been called “continuous partial
attention”: paying partial attention continuously - scanning for the best
opportunities, activities, and contacts at
any given moment. In general,
multitasking allows us to stay in face-toface connection with people, but
continuous partial attention can isolate us
in our own little bubble, simply watching a
screen, often with negative consequences.
The average American watches more than
four hours of TV each day. In a sixty-fiveyear life, that person will have spent nine
years glued to the tube and seen two
million commercials, with over 53 percent
of viewing time focused on crime, disaster,
and war. We know that Internet use is
growing rapidly, and recent studies show
that texting while driving makes people
eight times more likely to suffer a serious
car accident. Saint Peter, in today’s second
reading, says, “Sanctify Christ as Lord in
your hearts” (Peter 3:15). This is a clear
indication of what should be the single
most important thing in our lives, from
which everything else flows - how we
prioritize our daily life, how we spend our
time, our relationships with other people,
how we use our abilities, and how we use
our resources. Make the connection to a
Christ-centered life and live!

My Prayer to Our Mother Mary
Hail and praise be unto thee, Mary, whom God Almighty has exalted above all of his other servants!! God has entrusted us unto your
care and graciously grants any request that you make of Him on our behalf, if it is in accordance with His Divine Will. Our hearts
burn with zeal as we honor you, Our Mother. We love you as a child loves a mother and you love us as mother loves her children.
Please guide us, your little ones, to our Eternal and Almighty Father God through our prayers and through your love for us. Many in
this world may slander and degrade you while still claiming to exalt God, please forgive them and pray for them for they may
dishearten your devoted children. May we be made worthy of the promises of Christ through your prayers. You love us so freely and
we are so unworthy of it. You love us because God and Christ loved us first. Mary, Mother, I love you.

RELIGIOUS ITEMS FOR SALE JUNE 4 & 5 2011
In the Conference Room
Carmelites missionaries of St. Therese of The Child Jesus are called by a loving God to live and share the Gospel of Jesus.
We listen to the cry of the poor. We try to be united with them, making their hopes and aspirations our own, working
for justice and promoting respect for human dignity, being especially concerned for the people who are most needy and
unfortunate. We participate in evangelization by missionary presence, living and proclaiming the Gospel and working
with the poor and marginalized. In the spirit and apostolic zeal of St. Therese we are the love in the church and, we are
bonds of communion among diverse cultures, races and religions as reconcilers, healers and promoters of justice.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
This weekend our parish participates in the Venice diocesan Mission Cooperative Plan and we welcome
Douglas Campbell who helps in the missions in Haiti. The Missionary Cooperative plan assigns a mission group to
every parish to speak about the Catholic missions in other parts of the world and to remind us that our church is
fundamentally a Mission Church. Our diocesan mission office assigned the Diocese of Gonaives, Haiti – one of the
poorest diocese in Haiti serving 1 million Catholics - to share news of the Catholic Church in Haiti.
Memorare
(Remember O Most Gracious Virgin Mary)
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help or sought your intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.
Come and join the Knights of
Columbus every first Saturday of
the month directly after the 8:00am
Mass, reflecting on the Rosary for
Life. This Rosary is the Scriptural Rosary
selecting one of the mysteries each month. Each
mystery draws on exact bible passages
corresponding to each mystery. Come pray and
offer this rosary in union with our blessed
mother to battle abortion.
Copyright © 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
