Spring 2014 - Illiana Christian High School
PUB L I SHE D P ER I O D I C A L LY BY THE S C H O O L B O A RD What do you get when you mix red hair, dog treats, an
antique wheelchair, and FDR asking his cabinet to sing in
harmony? You get this year’s spring musical, Annie! The ICHS
drama department produced this classic story of the orphan girl
Annie (played by senior Maddy Beezie) who makes her way into
the heart of millionaire Oliver Warbucks (junior Jonathan Boer)
despite the scheming of Miss Hannigan (senior Mackenzie
Chapman), Rooster Hannigan (senior Luke Meekma), and Lily
St. Regis (junior Lauren Winn) to get her…er, the money…
back. Annie is more than a story of optimism amid the Great
Depression. It is a story which reminds us that just as Annie
was adopted into Warbucks’ family and goes from rags to riches,
we, too, get a fuller life by being adopted into God’s family even
though we are still sinners.
Led by co-directors Mrs. Mary Lagerwey and Mrs. Kristin
Bolkema, music directors Mrs. Kathy Sliekers and Mrs. Patricia
Menninga, and crew directors Mr. Jim Kamphuis and Miss
Emily Van Stee, 107 students worked together to put this
show on stage as actors, painters, set construction workers, pit
orchestra musicians, techies and sets and props runners. That
means almost 20% of our student body was involved!
“I liked the musical because we get people from all different
S PR I NG 2 0 1 4
places – athletes, artists, tech people – and we all work together.
I’m a senior, and I met people I had never talked to before –
and now I still talk to them,” said student director Kenyé Askew.
“I had an amazing time with the cast. They made working hard
to memorize lines and blocking fun,” senior Coty Miller said.
Maddy Beezie added, “The performances were a lot of fun, and
I liked working with the dog.”
The most popular member of the cast was Daisy, Mike and
Sherry Tempelman’s white lab, who played Annie’s dog, Sandy.
Having a live animal on stage is always an adventure, but student
director Kelley Walsh was ready to take it on. “I liked being
Daisy’s keeper for two weeks. We went for walks every night in
the school’s front lawn, and Kenye’ learned what it’s like to have
a dog. I had so much fun, and I’m glad that was my last musical
at Illiana,” Walsh commented.
With every spring production, Illiana says goodbye to many
seniors who have been an integral part of our drama department
for the last 4 years. Senior props crew leader Hannah TerHaar
said, “I was sad to hang up my headset for the last time.”
Thank you to the huge crowds who came out to see our
show, and we hope to see you for the fall play in November!

ANNUAL ASSOCIATION MEETING
Continued from front page
Retiring from the Board this summer are Doug Allen,
Bill Hromada, Valerie Miller, and Carl Toren. As a result, eight
nominees are necessary for Association consideration. Current
members Kathy Huizenga and Paul Lindemulder have consented
to serve a second three-year term and are therefore subject only
to a yes or novote at the meeting. We thank the four members
who are retiring and urge you to thank them personally for
the many hours of service they have provided Illiana. We
also thank the following nominees for their willingness to
serve on Illiana’s Board of Trustees for a three-year term
beginning this August. As previously approved by the
Association, nominees are no longer grouped solely by church
locale. The nominating committee takes several other factors into
consideration for grouping the candidates: church affiliation,
former leadership experience, and profession. This maintains
a continued representative balance on the board. One
nominee from each pairing will be elected at the April 21
Association meeting.

Notes to the 2014-15 Budget: General Fund
The following notes refer to specific lines
for the recommended budget on the opposite page. Our Board Treasurer, Bill Vree,
will be presenting this budget for approval
at the Association Meeting on Monday,
April 21, 2014.
EXPENSES:
Payroll and Benefits: Personnel salary and benefits comprise 81% of the
total general fund budget. The faculty
pay scale has incorporated a 2.5% increase; non-faculty salaries will also
increase by 2.5%. In addition, we have
added an additional experience step in
the faculty salaries budget. Our current
salary schedule has a maximum experience level of 15 years. Starting with the
2014-15 school year, teachers who have
20 or more years of experience will
receive an additional salary increment.
We are also planning to increase faculty
staffing levels by 1½ full-time equivalent.
We continue to contribute 12% to the
CSI pension plan, which is a definedbenefit retirement plan for faculty and
staff.
The medical insurance costs are expected
to increase this year with the continued
implementation of the Affordable Care
Act. We are budgeting $471,449 for
the coming year, which is a 15% increase
over the projected costs for 2013-14.
Employees will be contributing 15% of
the cost of their individual coverage and
25% of the cost for dependent coverage.
Operational Expenses: Operational expenses comprise 19% of the general fund
budget. Selected line items have been
adjusted to keep in line with historical
averages and current year projections.
Continuing Education – With several of
our teachers working toward advanced
degrees, we are anticipating higher
continuing education expenses. Consequently, we raised this expense from
$15,000 to $20,000 for 2014-15.
Telephone Expense – This line item has
increased over the past year due to increased bandwidth required for our computer technology. We are raising this
item by $9,000 to $21,000 which is in
line with projected 2013-14 actual costs.
Instructional Supplies – This line item
continues to grow each year. We are increasing the budget for this expense to
$68,000 which is more in line with prior
year actual expenses.
Technology – This line item is based
on an annual replacement schedule
which allows Illiana to keep the school’s
extensive technology infrastructure
up-to-date. The technology budget
plan with accompanying replacement
schedule was updated this year, resulting in a 2014-15 technology budget of
$135,000, which includes the purchase
of 52 computers, 1 server, software
licensing fees and maintenance.
Custodial Supplies/Maintenance – This
line item was hit hard in 2013-14 due to
the excessive snow and frigid temperatures, resulting in large expenditures for
snow removal and related building repairs; it is impossible to know what will
happen in the coming year. For 2014-15,
we are raising this category by $6,500 to
$114,000.
Busing – This account includes charter
busing for field trips and athletic events
as well as fuel and maintenance of Illiana
vans. Since we have purchased our own
big yellow bus, we see a continued drop
in the need for charter busing but are
raising our budgeted amount to $50,000
to match prior year actual costs.
Public Relations – It takes more time,
energy and resources to attract students
today. This means that we need to spend
more money on advertising and marketing to these potential students. Consequently, we are raising this line item to
$40,000, which is more in line with prior
year actual costs and anticipated expenditures for 2014-15.
RECEIPTS:
Tuition: We are projecting an enrollment of 556 students for the coming
year, which is an increase of 35 students
from the 2013-14 budget and an increase
of 10 students from the actual student
count for 2013-14. The Board recommends a tuition increase of 2.0%, setting
the tuition rate at $8,076. A discount
of $620 will be available to members of
supporting churches. All families will
be offered an Illiana Foundation Tuition Grant but the amount has not been
determined yet.
Church Offerings: Each of our 30+
supporting churches has committed to
supporting the school financially. For
the 2014-15 year, we are asking churches
to contribute $580 per student, with the
discount to supporting church families
remaining at $620 per student. Illiana
has always been very grateful for this
generous support and is looking forward to a continued partnership with
these churches. Because several of our
churches have been struggling to achieve
this level of support, we are reducing
the budgeted amount for church
offerings by $10,000 to $165,000. This
figure does not include funds raised
through the annual Illiana Drive.
Illiana Fund: A very generous constituency supported the annual Illiana Fund
drive in a big way once again in 201314, resulting in total receipts of nearly
$175,000. Consequently, we are raising the budgeted amount $10,000 to
$170,000 for 2014-15.

WINTER SPORTS WRAP UP
The winter season has officially ended, and once again, Illiana had a lot of
success both on and off the court.
Girls’ Basketball – Although the varsity struggled with wins and losses, the
team character was great. All three levels had wonderful, Christian young women who
grew as basketball players and as Christians. All conference was awarded to freshman
Gabriel Kreykes. Kat Witting also went downstate in the 3-point shooting contest. The
JV team finished 2nd in the Metro Conference and had a great year. The freshmen girls
also had a very strong season. We want to thank Dave Bosman for his years of coaching
at the Varsity level. Dave has decided to step down from coaching to spend more time
with his family. We want to thank Dave for all of the time and passion he dedicated to
girls’ basketball.
Boys’ Basketball – The boys had another good season and finished with winning
records on all levels. The Varsity Boys finished 4th in the Metro Suburban Conference
and lost in Regional Finals to Carver Military Academy. All conference was awarded
to Caleb Jonkman. Brandon Galambos and Zach Pruim went downstate to compete in
the 3-point shooting contest. The Frosh-Soph and freshmen teams also had winning
records and had very successful seasons.
Wrestling – The wrestling program continues its strong program under the
leadership of Dean Bosman. The team performed well in Regionals with the following
wrestlers placing in their respective weight classes: Josh Kostelyk, Lucas Miedema,
Benjamin DeYoung, Austin Brummel, Martin Jansma, Tyler Bosman, Daniel Lyzenga,
Collin Templeman, Charles Hayes, and Alex DeYoung. Great job, guys!!
Cheerleading – The cheerleaders had another solid season. They did not have
the opportunity to participate in the State competition this year because bad weather
resulted in the movement of the tournament to Sunday. However, they performed well
in other tournaments and were always the leaders of the “Loud Crowd” at every home
game. We want to thank Amber Beezhold and Ashley Lockwood for their years of
coaching. Both have decided to move on to other things, and we want to thank them
for their leadership.
Thanks to all athletes, parents, coaches, fans, and businesses who have and

young men and women to be servants of Christ.
Right To Life March
On January 21, forty-five students accompanied by
Miss Mesman and Mr. White set out for a 13 hour bus (and
major winter snowstorm) ride to Washington D.C. for the annual
Right to Life March. Their trip featured attending the March,
but the students were also challenged by hearing speeches about
the sanctity of life and the need to honor Biblical principles of
sexuality. The group also visited the Right to Life Convention
Headquarters where they were able to purchase books and various
materials centered on the Pro-Life theme.
The second day in Washington was a day for sight-seeing. Keeping with our theme of “life,” we visited the Holocaust
Museum and the Supreme Court, two places that definitely made
us think about pro-life issues. Jada Allen commented, “The
Holocaust Museum emotionally touched me by making me
greatful for everything in my life.” Hanna Wegner remarked,
“The March was a great experience. It was awesome to see so
many people who share the same passion for saving babies.”
