T
he Milton District Hospital Foundation’s (MDHF)
recent CT Scanner and Diagnostic Imaging Renewal
Campaign was pushed to new heights last year by the
matching gift challenge issued by Orlando Corporation. The
challenge offered to match each dollar raised above the
$3.5 million goal up to $750,000. This investment made a
huge impact on the campaign by increasing the goal to $5
million. The additional funds raised were used to revitalize
and renew Milton District Hospital’s (MDH) Diagnostic
Imaging Department.
“When Orlando Corporation presented this opportunity to our
community, the residents of Milton met the challenge and
maximized the generous support that was offered by Orlando
Corporation,” explained Brian Penman, MDHF Board Member
and Capital Campaign Team member.
“We are excited about our new relationship with the Milton
District Hospital Foundation and are pleased that this gift,
along with those of others, has helped the hospital continue
to provide excellent patient care to the community of Milton,”
said Phil King, President of Orlando Corporation.

Orlando Corporation, Canada’s largest private industrial
developer, has made it a priority to focus their giving solely on
healthcare.

RUTH’S LEGACY
R
uth Chater Anderson's legacy is ensuring a brighter future for Milton District
Hospital.
She made the ultimate gift in 2007 through her will, providing much needed funds to help
the hospital keep pace with ever-changing technology and the need for medical
equipment updates.
The Milton District Hospital Foundation would like to acknowledge Ruth's legacy gift and
her long-standing contributions to Milton District Hospital. Ruth was a brilliant example of
the goodwill of which she spoke. She inspired others as a long time volunteer at MDH,
also serving as President of the Hospital Auxiliary. In addition, Ruth served the
community as a member of the Hospital’s Foundation Board. Her contributions to Milton
District Hospital are numerous, spanning over several decades of loyal support and
commitment. One of her many contributions included the transformation of Jim and
Barbara Snow’s barn into a beautiful venue for the Foundation’s first Blazing Saddles
event.
We are truly grateful to Ruth for recognizing the value in making this gift of a bequest to
the Milton District Hospital Foundation. Thank you Ruth for your generous contribution!
FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS
T
he Deumer’s have been
long time supporters of the
Milton District Hospital Foundation.
In 2000, their $100,000 donation
was instrumental in helping the
Foundation reach its goal of
$250,000 to fund a Mammography
unit for MDH. Their continued
philanthropic support was once again
recognized with their leadership gift
of $100,000 towards the MDH
Foundation’s CT Scanner Campaign.
Boyke passed away in June 2008 and
we wish to acknowledge his and
Dicky’s loyalty and commitment to

Auxiliary has lent us their generous

BOARD
AND THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I
t was a record-breaking year for
the Milton District Hospital Foundation.
Our fundraising efforts focused primarily on
the CT Scanner and Diagnostic Imaging
Renewal Campaign and thanks to the
support and generosity of our caring
community, we have exceeded our $5
million goal.
On January 7, 2008, the hospital and
community celebrated as the first patient
was brought into the CT Scanner Suite at
Milton District Hospital. On that day, the CT
Scanner saw a total of nine patients.
FINANCIAL
SUMMARY
This very successful campaign was
brought to a close in the Spring with the
official opening of the newly renovated
Diagnostic Imaging Department and the
unveiling of the Donor wall. We would like to
recognize the incredible work and support of
Campaign Co-chairs, Kim Mason and Brent
Richardson, the Campaign Cabinet and

On behalf of the Foundation, we would like to take a moment to recognize Donna
McLaughlin for her leadership throughout the recent Capital Campaign and for her 27
years with the Foundation. Donna retired this past December and we are grateful for her
many years of service, support and hard work.
As Monty Kuntz’s term as Chair of the Board of Directors draws to a close, we look forward
to welcoming our new Chair in the fall. Monty will continue his work with the Foundation
as Past Chair. We would also like to extend a thank you to all members of our Foundation
Board, past and present for your dedicated service.
Looking ahead, the Foundation is excited to welcome Helen Vatistas as its new Executive
Director. Helen brings with her over 20 years of fundraising experience and together with
the Foundation staff is moving forward with an action plan to address the growing
demands for care from the community by helping to improve Milton District Hospital’s
capacity through technology, equipment and innovation.
This is a very exciting time for the Milton District Hospital Foundation. Having just
concluded our capital campaign we are now taking a look at our short and long-term plans
for fundraising to support the hospital. The staff and physicians at the MDH are highly
skilled and devoted healthcare professionals and we need to support them with the best
equipment available so they can continue to provide quality care to the people who need
it. We are encouraged by the momentum and support the recent campaign has generated
and we look forward to working with the hospital and our community partners to enhance
the services at MDH.
In 2009, MDH will be celebrating 50 years of serving the Milton community. Our hospital
has been an integral part of the Milton community and will carry on in that role. The Milton
District Hospital Foundation will continue to work hard to support the hospital as it
prepares to meet the needs of our growing community now and into the future. On behalf
of Milton District Hospital Foundation, our patients, staff, physicians and volunteers, thank
you for all your support, past and present.

will is the easiest and most effective means to ensure
that you fully provide for your family and that your
assets are distributed as you wish. Gifts by will, or bequest,
have become an important source of revenue for MDHF,
helping to support patient care and services.
Estate planning is a lifelong process that should not end the
moment you sign your will. An up-to-date will can provide
financial protection for your spouse, children, grandchildren
and your charitable interests, like MDHF.
If you have not developed an estate plan or if you think your
will might be outdated, take a moment to review it. For
example:

If there are changes in your family such as the birth of a
child or grandchild; the death of a loved one; an
adoption; a new marriage and or a divorce.
MEMORIAL DONOR LIST 2007-2008
The Foundation has a program to honour those
in whose memory family and friends donated
$500 or more during the fiscal year from
April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008.
If there are changes in your choice of executor or the
guardian for minor children.
•
If there are changes in the way in which you own property
(joint tenancy/tenancy in common).
•
If you have started a business or sold a business interest.
•
If there has been a change in tax laws.
Ensure that your loved ones and your favourite charity
receive the legacy you want. It is highly recommended that
donors consult their own tax or legal counsel when making
planned gifts or updating their wills.

2008-09 FUNDRAISING PRIORITIES
FOR MILTON DISTRICT HOSPITAL!!

et me begin by extending
our appreciation for the
support you have provided to
Milton District Hospital (MDH) over
the past year. The tremendous
success of the CT Scanner and
Diagnostic Imaging Renewal
Campaign will be recorded in our
history book as one that truly made
a difference to the health of our
community.
This has been a very exciting year
for Milton District Hospital and the
MDH Foundation. It has been a
year of successes, challenges and
change at the hospital. To each and
every one of you I would like to
thank you for your generosity,
your patience and your support.

people in our community with the best equipment
and facility as the goal. Your support allows the hospital to
sustain its ability to better serve you, your family and the
community when you need it most.

MDH has a critical and urgent need to expand its facilities to
respond to significant changes within the health care
environment and growing community need. In recent years
Milton has experienced unprecedented population growth, a
pattern that is projected to continue. We have excellent
nurses, physicians and support staff but without the
appropriate space there is no doubt we will be facing a
critical situation in the not too distant future. Planning for the
redevelopment of MDH must begin now to minimize the
number of years during which we will be overwhelmingly
challenged to meet the needs of our community.
We are encouraged that in 2007 the Ministry of Health and
Long-Term Care announced a $1.5 million Proposal
Development Grant for Milton District Hospital, and work is
now well underway on the Master Plan and Business Case in
support of this much needed redevelopment project.
Realistically, even with prompt approvals from the Ministry,
this expansion will take a number of years to implement and
complete which is why we have also submitted a Coping
Strategies document to the Ministry for their approval. This
document outlines a strategic and focused approach to
bridge the increasing gap between patient care requirements
and organizational capacity – both human and facility – for
the next seven years.
HHS is committed to working collaboratively with all our
stakeholders to ensure these projects continue to move
forward. Time is of the essence and community support of
our proposals will be essential to our future success.
Once again, a special thanks to each and every one of you
for your time, energy and commitment to the patients and
staff at Milton District Hospital. I look forward to working
with you in the years ahead.

As you can imagine, hospitals are expensive places to
operate and equip. In addition to the CT Scanner and the
Diagnostic Imaging upgrades, MDH was able to purchase a
number of important equipment upgrades during the past
few years including: a colonoscope for the operating room;
an electronic fetal monitor and a transport isolette for
obstetrics; and an endocleaner for our sterilization
department.
We are excited about celebrating with you 50 years of
embracing the health of our community. Our top priorities
for 2008-09 are focused on equipment to improve patient
care with the addition of the following:

f you own publically traded securities or mutual funds
that have increased in value, you may want to consider
donating the securities directly to Milton District Hospital
Foundation. As of May 2006, the capital gains tax has been
eliminated on gifts of appreciated securities to charities,
resulting in considerable tax savings for donors.
The benefit of this plan is two-fold; fulfil your wish of making
that important contribution to your local community hospital
and then reward yourself by maximizing your tax benefits.
It is a win-win scenario.
It’s simple. Decide which appreciated securities or mutual

transfer shares electronically to MDHF. You will receive a tax
receipt for the closing price of the securities on the date they
