The President’s Message
The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for January 2016
Happy New Year to everyone! 2016 is set to be a very eventful year for Dogs
Queensland. There is a great deal of work to be done on many fronts, and the
Board is committed to pushing our organisation forward even further over the
next year.
The members forum held last month at Durack was a very productive meeting,
where a number of important and relevant issues were brought forward and
discussed. The Board is committed to working with all members to achieve
what is best for our organisation and for the membership as a whole. I’d like to
thank all those, including the Directors, who attended our first forum and for
having their say. More forums will be scheduled for 2016, including sessions
in Zone 2 and Zone 3, and we look forward to even more members attending.
Availability of Directors to the membership
One key issue which was raised at the members forum was that Directors need
to be representing the membership, even though Dogs Queensland is now
a Company Limited by Guarantee and as Directors we have different legal
obligations to previous councillors of the Canine Control Council (QLD) Inc.
All Directors on the current Board of Dogs Queensland are committed to
working for and with the membership of our organisation. Simply because a
Director is unable to physically attend Shows or certain events, doesn’t make
them unavailable and doesn’t mean they aren’t performing their duties as a
Director. All Directors are contactable by phone or email, as well as directly
through physical meetings.
Puppy Farming Legislation
Another key issue discussed at the members forum was the proposed State
puppy farming legislation. Sadly we still do not have a lot of information at
hand from the Queensland Government to make available to members. As
information comes to hand, it will be shared with members, so that everyone
is kept up to speed with what is happening with this significant issue.
I can assure members that Dogs Queensland is doing its best to stay at the
forefront of this matter, and will continue to push the Queensland Government
for exemptions for our membership.

Dogs Queensland Office - Service Delivery Review
Early in 2016, we will commence a service delivery review of the administrative
functions of the Dogs Queensland office. The service delivery review will be
designed to identify potential service delivery improvements as well as looking
to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the office, and assist in determining
the need for internal operational changes. The delivery review will also look at
streamlining a number of services to online functions, such as litter registrations,
title applications, etc.
Here’s to a productive and prosperous 2016 for Dogs Queensland!

The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to
consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers
of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted
for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the
act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before
submitting advertising material.

Ronda Mary Bygraves
5/9/1930 - 31/10/2015
Acijay Kennels
It is with great sadness that the Cocker Spaniel Club of Queensland Inc
has said goodbye to another senior member and Patroness.
Ronda Mary Bygraves crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully on 31st
October 2015.
Ronda held many positions over the forty five years I knew her, and
was a tireless worker – from the smallest task to Patroness. She was a
wealth of information.
After two hip replacements slowed her down, you could find her ringside
marking a catalogue. If you needed to know anything – ask Ronda.
She will be missed. Play happily Ronda, with those gone before.

WHAT ARE
SIGHTHOUNDS?
Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Feature supplied by the Queensland
Sighthound Association
Sighthounds, also known as gazehounds, are breeds that
primarily hunt by speed and sight, instead of by scent. All
Sighthound breeds are an ancient type of dog dating back
to the great Egyptian, Middle Eastern, African and Southwest
Asian civilisations.
Sighthounds are independent dogs, as the breed was taught
to hunt and chase down game with little guidance from their
humans, whereas other sporting dog breeds were trained to
work alongside their masters and rely on cues or signals for
their actions.
Perhaps surprising to many people, is the sedate indoor
demeanor and behaviour of the sighthound dogs considering
they are the fastest canines on the planet. Some are capable of
reaching speeds of just over 45 kilometres per hour or faster,
and can be the calmest and most relaxed breeds of dogs in
the house, provided they are given adequate outside routine
exercise.
Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound was discovered by Westeners in Afghanistan
and surrounding regions and brought to the UK in the latter part of
the 19th century. There were two distinct types: the ones from the
Southern and Western desert regions were of a rangy build, were
light in color and sparse in outer coat. The dogs from the Northern
regions were more compact in structure, darker in color and more
heavily coated. The first Afghans in Australia were imported from
the United States in 1934.
The breed is primarily a coursing hound, pursuing its quarry by
sight. The Afghan Hound hunted singly, in dog and bitch pairs, in
packs, or combined with specially trained falcons. A tremendously
versatile breed, its quarry included hare, wolves, jackals, marmots
and snow leopards. Because of the variety of game hunted and
the diversity of the geography, the Afghan Hound's most desirable
traits were being sure-footed and agile to work the rugged terrain,
strength and speed to bring down prey, plus the stamina to
maintain a strenuous chase for a sustained length of time.
The gait of the Afghan Hound should be smooth and springy with
a style of high order. The whole appearance of the dog should
give the impression of strength and dignity combining speed and
power. The head must be held proudly, showing its arrogance,
with its signature ringed tail held aloft. The eastern or oriental
expression is typical of the breed. All colours are acceptable.
The typical Afghan Hound can be aloof and dignified with a
certain keen fierceness, but happy and clownish when playing.
The Afghan Hound's reasoning skills have made it a successful
competitor in dog agility trials as well as an intuitive therapy dog
and companion. Although seldom used today for hunting, Afghan
Hounds are frequent participants in lure coursing events and are
also popular in the conformation show ring.

Not terribly successful hunters on their own, they are not suited
to coursing, although they enjoy lure chasing.
Particularly high in the leg and elegant, the Azawakh sighthound
gives a general impression of great fineness. His bone structure
and musculature are transparent beneath fine and lean tissues
(skin). This sighthound presents itself as a racy dog whose body
fits into a rectangle with its longer sides in vertical position.
Covered by a short, thin coat that comes in shades of fawn, sand,
brindle, black, grey, blue, grizzle, and all shades of brown, including
chocolate. Some Azawakh have a black mask or white markings
on the legs, chest and tail tip.
The first Azawakh was imported to Australia by Jumadabey
Kennels in Melbourne.
Azawakh
The Azawakh is a sighthound from the Sahel region of Africa,
which encompasses parts of the West African nations of Mali
and Niger, including an area called Azawakh Valley. The dogs
have accompanied the wandering Touareg people for centuries
and were kept as camp guards and livestock guards as well as
valued companions. The Azawakh’s strongest character trait is as
a watch dog.
These dogs often can be seen sleeping on the low straw roofs of
the village homes of their Mali owners. As hyenas or other night
predators approach, the first Azawakh to see it jumps down and
is quickly joined by the others; they form a pack and chase away
or kill the intruder.
There is no doubt, however, that back in the mists of time they
share ancestors with the Saluki and Sloughi. In fact, another
name for the Azawakh is Touareg Sloughi. The Azawakh is a rare
sighthound; is aloof, with a complex personality, and has the
unusual characteristic of being protective. The Azawakh, quiet
to live with, is not suited to every home. Intelligent and loyal, the
Azawakh must live indoors with his family, never outside with
little attention.
The Azawakh has excellent running gear and is built for speed, but
this has evolved over millennia for the purpose of heat dissipation,
living in the harsh climate of the Sahel in West Africa. The Azawakh
was never developed for hunting large or small game.
To the extent that *all* dogs have some level of prey drive, so also
does an Azawakh, and the level of prey drive varies from average
to none. They need regular exercise to stay conditioned.

Borzoi
The Borzoi was bred for hundreds of years by Russian nobility. They
were developed by crossing the Eastern Asian Greyhound and a
northern hunting spitz type dog for coat. The dogs were called
Russian Wolfhounds in America up until 1936 when the name was
changed to ‘Borzoi,’ coming from the Russian word ‘borzii,’ which
means swift. The Borzoi Club of America and the Borzoi Club UK
both prefer ‘borzoi’ as the form for both singular and plural forms
(this is not the case in Russian, as the Russian plural is ‘borzýe’).
Fierce on the hunt, this sighthound was used for hundreds of
years to hunt wolves, fox and hare in the open plains of Russia.
As the breed became more popular it was used more and more
as a companion dog and its temperament became more docile.
The Borzoi’s talents include hunting, sighting and lure coursing.
In a few places around the globe, Borzoi are still used as working
hunters, and continue the breed’s traditional role as capturers of
large predatory game.

The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 15
Borzoi, on average, are the quietest dogs around. Many never bark
in their lives, believe it or not, but even the ones that are average
in that department, seldom bark at anything other than game (cat,
possum etc) on the other side of the fence.
Strangers are usually greeted with a grin or a nose shoved between
the legs (such a perfect height!) but rarely with suspicion. They are,
as a breed, worthless watchdogs.
The Borzoi was originally bred for the coursing of wild game on
more or less open terrain, relying on sight rather than scent. To
accomplish this purpose, the Borzoi needed particular structural
qualities to chase, catch and hold his quarry. Special emphasis is
placed on sound running gear, strong neck and jaws, courage and
agility, combined with proper condition.
The Borzoi should appear well balanced, graceful in motion or
repose, aristocratic, dignified and elegant. It is a coursing hound
which must be courageous, powerful, and show great speed with
a temperament that is sensitive, alert and aloof. The Borzoi should
always possess unmistakable elegance, with flowing lines. Males,
masculine without coarseness; bitches, feminine and refined.
Deerhound
The Deerhound’s antecedents will have existed back to a time
before recorded history. They would have been kept by the
Scots and Picts and used to help in providing part of their diet,
mainly hoofed game. The Deerhound was bred to hunt red deer
by ‘coursing’, and also ‘deer stalking’. In outward appearance,
the Scottish Deerhound is similar to the Greyhound, but larger
and more heavily boned. However, Deerhounds have a number
of characteristics that set them apart. While not as fast as a
Greyhound on a smooth, firm surface, once the going gets rough
or heavy they can outrun a Greyhound.
The environment in which they worked, the cool, often wet, and
hilly Scottish Highland glens, contributed to the larger, roughcoated appearance of the breed. The Deerhound is closely
related to the Irish wolfhound and was the main contributor to
the recovery of that breed when it was re-created at the end of
the 19th century.
The Scottish deerhound is mellow, low-key and easy going — a
gracious and well-mannered addition to the home. Outdoors, it
loves to run and chase anything that moves. Indoors, it needs
plenty of room to stretch on a soft surface. The deerhound is
independent but willing to please; it is extremely sensitive. It is
amiable toward, but often reserved with, strangers. This breed is
good with children, other dogs and usually other pets.
It is, however, a true sighthound which has been selected for
generations to pursue game; consequently, most Deerhounds will
be eager to chase. The sport of lure coursing is most enjoyable
to the Deerhound. In Australia, deerhounds have been used to
hunt the kangaroo and wild boar. In addition, according to Teddy
Roosevelt in ‘Hunting the Grisley and Other Sketches’, and some
Canadian and American wolf hunters used them.

The Greyhound is strongly built, upstanding, of generous
proportions, muscular power and symmetrical formation, with long
head and neck, clean well laid shoulders, deep chest, capacious
body, slightly arched loin, powerful quarters, sound legs and feet,
and a suppleness of limb, which emphasise in a marked degree
its distinctive type and quality. Possessing remarkable stamina,
endurance and intelligence, they are gentle, affectionate and
even tempered. They also participate in many other dog sports,
including lure coursing, conformation, agility, and obedience, and
beyond their grace and speed, people love them for their sweet,
mild nature.
Greyhound
The Greyhound is one of the most ancient breeds known to man,
and can be traced to almost every country on every continent
on the globe. The first evidence of the breed was discovered in
Egypt, with carvings in old tombs dating back to 2900 and 2751
B.C. depicting dogs of unmistakable Greyhound type attacking
deer and mountain goats. There is little doubt that the dog of
ancient times is the same as the one we know today. The unique
and highly prized abilities of these sighthounds help explain why
they have changed very little in 2,000 years.
Aristocracy and culture has always surrounded the Greyhound,
and in early times only royalty bred them. England has played
an important role in the development of the breed, with the
first illustrations dating back to the 9th century. It was used on
practically all kinds of game from deer, stags, foxes and such, but
the hare is the Greyhound’s natural quarry.
There are today three separate breeding lines that exist: they are
racing, coursing and show greyhounds. Racing greyhounds are
bred for speed, coursing greyhounds for a combination of speed,
endurance, and courage, and show greyhounds for appearance.
Greyhounds Arrive in Australia 1770
The botanist Joseph Banks who sailed to Australia with Captain
Cook on The Endeavour brought a male and female Greyhound
with him on the voyage. Banks was a keen hunter and his diary
entries often referred to the dog’s regular pursuit of the native
animals.
In 1788 when the First Fleet sailed into Botany Bay, on board were
Captain Arthur Phillip (who was to become the first Governor of
NSW) and his Greyhounds and ‘assorted puppies’.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Irish Wolfhound
The Irish Wolfhound’s name is derived not from its large stature,
but from the breed’s intended purpose: to hunt wolves. The wolf
and boar (which the dog was also used to hunt as early as the
first century) no longer exist in Ireland, in part to the presence
of these protective hounds. This is a very old breed with Roman
records dating as far back as 391 AD. They were used in wars, and
for guarding herds and property and for hunting Irish elk, deer,
boar and wolves.
They were held in such high esteem that battles were fought over
them. Irish Wolfhounds were often given as royal presents. When
the boar and wolf became extinct in Ireland the Irish Wolfhound as
a result declined in numbers. A British army officer by the name of
Captain George Graham bred them in the second half of the 19th
century. The breed was restored by the introduction of Great Dane
and Deerhound breeds. The Irish Wolfhound Club was founded in
1885 and it was recognised by the AKC in 1897. In 1902 a hound
was first presented to the Irish Guards as a mascot.
The Irish Wolfhound is not recommended for small yards it will
do better with a large yard. This is a giant breed that needs lots
of space to run, but they do not need any more exercise than
smaller breeds.

It needs to be part of the family and would be very unhappy in
a kennel.
Being a sighthound, it will chase and as such, needs a secure,
fenced area for exercise.
Irish Wolfhounds are sweet-tempered, patient, kind, thoughtful
and very intelligent. Their excellent nature can be trusted with
children. Willing and eager to please, they are unconditionally
loyal to their owner and family. They tend to greet everyone as a
friend, so do not count on them being a watchdog, but may be a
deterrent simply due to their size. This giant breed can be clumsy
and are slow to mature in both body and mind, taking about two
years before they are full grown.
However, they grow rapidly and high-quality food is essential.
While it is important to take a growing pup for daily walks for
their mental well-being, hard exercise should not be forced and
may be too taxing for this dog’s body when it is young. The health
and longevity of the Irish Wolfhound are also very important to
consider. Because of their size, these hounds often do not live as
long as other breeds.
This belief is based on the depiction of miniature greyhounds in the
early decorative arts of these countries and on the archaeological
discovery of small greyhound skeletons. By the Middle Ages, the
breed had become distributed throughout Southern Europe and
was later a favorite of the Italians of the sixteenth century, among
whom miniature dogs were in great demand. Sadly, though,
‘designer’ breeders tried, and failed, to make the breed even smaller
by crossbreeding it with other breeds of dogs. This only lead to
mutations with deformed skulls, bulging eyes and dental problems.
The original Italian Greyhound had almost disappeared when
groups of breeders got together and managed to return the breed
to normal. It is due to its popularity in Italy that the breed became
known as the ‘Italian Greyhound.’ From this period onward the
history of the breed can be fairly well traced as it spread through
Europe, arriving in England in the seventeenth century during
the reign of Charles 1.
The Italian Greyhound is elegant and graceful without being
weedy, they are extremely agile and fleet of foot. The description
‘A greyhound in miniature’ does not mean an exact small replica
of an English Greyhound, nor is a scaled down Whippet in type,
correct. The European Standard compares them to a Sloughi - a
hound with similar movement but the Italian Greyhound must be
more refined and not show any coarseness.
A sighthound in a small package, the Italian Greyhound shares
its larger relatives’ characteristics. It loves to run and chase. It
is extremely gentle and sensitive. Reserved, often timid, with
strangers, it is devoted to its family and is good with children,
and other dogs and pets. However, it can be easily injured by
boisterous children and larger dogs.
Italian Greyhound
Often the question is asked as to whether the Italian Greyhound
were bred for hunting or striclty as a pet? While historians debate
the origins of the breed it is most likely the early IGs were used for
practical purposes, i.e. hunting small game or controlling rodents
and other vermin and was also known as a hunter of rabbits. The
Italian Greyhound is the smallest of the family of gaze hounds.
The Italian Greyhound first appeared in the Mediterranean Basin
in what is now Greece or Turkey. The breed is an old one and is
believed to have originated more than 4,000 years ago in the
countries now known as Greece and Turkey.

nation of Malta. Its native name is Kelb tal-Fenek in Maltese,
which means ‘Rabbit Dog’ and is traditionally used for hunting.

Feature Breed
The Queensland Dog World
For many years, the Pharaoh Hound was considered one of the
oldest dog breeds, because it is thought by some to resemble
paintings of dogs featured on the walls of ancient Egyptian
pyramids and tombs. Recent DNA analysis reveals, however, that
this breed is actually a more recent construction, developed out of
different lines of European hunting dogs. This DNA data now puts
to rest the ‘Egyptian Myth’ and proves the breed did not originate
from Egypt. Another study ‘Mitochondrial DNA sequence variation
in Portuguese native dog breeds’ found no evidence of connection
between Iberian dogs and those of North Africa; showing again,
no connection between Mediterranean hounds and dogs of North
Africa. The Pharaoh Hound not only hunts by sight but by scent
and hearing as well. It is an exuberant chaser, but it is relaxed in
homes. They are known for being excited and happy dogs.
All Pharaohs may blush at times when they are excited. They
do not blush in their cheeks but in their ears and noses. It is an
independent-minded, highly intelligent, and occasionally stubborn
hound. Positive methods should be used when training. Pharaohs
were bred to hunt and think for themselves and they have retained
this trait. They are very adept jumpers and are well suited to many
dog sports such as agility and lure coursing. It has a very unusual
hunting style especially on its own. When its prey, either rabbit
or vermin, is in a mound it will bounce in the air on all 4 legs in
an attempt to have its prey come out in the open or move. The
Pharaoh Hound at first glance should appear both graceful and
elegant as well as powerful and athletic. It should show strength
without bulkiness or excessive musculature. They usually come in
tan or chestnut colours and a white tail tip is commonly admired,
white on chest (called ‘The Star’) white on toes. The ears on the
Pharaoh Hound medium high set; carried erect when alert, but
very mobile; broad at the base; fine and large.
Historically, Salukis were used by nomadic tribes for hunting. All
along the Silk Road the Salukis presence was known for almost as
long as the dog has been domesticated, a testimony to its function
as a hunter and his beauty as a companion. His image is found in
many cultures. There are petroglyphs and rock arts in Golpaygan and
Khomein in central Iran that shows saluki-like hounds and falcons
accompanying hunters chasing preys (ca. 8000-10,000 BC).Typical
quarry included gazelles, hares, foxes and jackals. An independent
and aloof breed, the Saluki may seem reserved with strangers. They
are gentle, affectionate, sensitive and intelligent they can be difficult
to train and any such training should be gentle and patient, harsh
methods should never be used. They can get bored easily, and
should not be left at home unattended for long periods.
Salukis come in two varieties - Smooth and Feathered. Although we
see mostly the feathered variety at shows, evidence shows that in
their countries of origin smooth and feathered were equally desired.
Some tribes only kept the smooth variety, but all the Salukis were
used for hunting, and were selected as breeding stock based on
hunting abilities and stamina.
The Saluki is a natural athlete that needs a lot of exercise, including
a daily, long, brisk walk or run as they are happiest when running,
This very independent dog should never be off-lead except in an
isolated, scouted area. These dogs hunt on sight and will pay no
attention to their handler’s calls if they are chasing something.
Salukis run at top speeds of 40 mph (55km/h) or more with their feet
barely touching the ground. These top speeds are reached in short
spurts, but they also have exceptional endurance. An excellent way
to exercise your Saluki is to let it trot alongside your bike. Incredibly
fast even over rough terrain they are excellent competitors on the
lure coursing field.

Sloughi
The Saluki, from the hot climate of the Arab Desert, is the swift,
galloping hound of the great nomadic, pastoral, Bedouin tribes
of the desert and has been used by them for hunting from time
immemorial.
The origin of the Sloughi is not known, but it is a very old breed. It
was mentioned in a book by the Moroccan writer Al Mansur which
was probably written in the 13th century.

Morocco holds the FCI standard, but the breed originated in the
area which today consists of Morocco, Libya, Tunisia and Algeria,
in the northern Saharan region of the Maghreb. The Sloughi is also
known as the Arabian Sighthound, which is actually incorrect as it
was the indigenous, nomadic Berbers (the Amazigh or ‘free people,‘
as they call themselves) who developed the breed long before the
invasion of the Arabs. The breed is locally known as the Sloughi
Moghrebi, meaning the ‘sighthound of the Maghreb.’ The Sloughis
held an elevated position in comparison to other dogs, and they
were greatly prized.
Only chiefs and kings were allowed to own them, and much effort
went into making sure that they were bred pure. An owner of a
fine hunting female would travel far to find just the right mate for
her. There were originally two types of Sloughi: the larger, more
substantial mountain Sloughi and the smaller, lither desert Sloughi.
In western countries there is less distinction between the two as
they have been mixed. The breed is not, as previously believed,
closely related to the Saluki DNA testing has shown that these two
breeds are only remotely related. The Sloughi’s closest relative is the
Azawakh which belongs to the Berber tribes of southern Sahara.
Still, the two breeds have been separated long enough that there
are obvious differences in conformity and temperament.
The Sloughi is a medium-sized, short-coated hunting sighthound
of the desert type. An African sighthound, it was used to hunt wild
game, such as desert hare, gazelles, foxes and jackals, often in
cooperation with hunting falcons. It also protected the house and
livestock of its owner. The breed is adapted to desert and semidesert life in the Maghreb region of northwest Africa. This dry, lean
and muscular hound gives an impression of rustic elegance as well
as strength, and it is an efficient hunter with great endurance as well
as speed. The Sloughis are affectionate, gentle, and very closely knit
to their owners. They are intelligent and independent, and curious
of their surroundings. They are quiet and calm indoors, and prefer to
lie on soft rugs and blankets. Strangers are met with aloofness and
caution, while friends are greeted with enthusiasm. Sloughis don’t
make great obedience dogs, but they respond to fair and gentle
training methods. Sloughis get along well with children and other
animals if they are raised with them. But as Sloughis are hunting
hounds with a strong chase instinct, caution is recommended when
the dog is outside with smaller animals.
Sloughis, and particularly young dogs, like to run daily. They make
excellent jogging partners, and need to go on daily walks or runs.
They will truly be happy when they are allowed to run off leash.
Colours are all shades of light to red sand with or without black
mask, black ears, brindle, black overlay and black mantle. The most
common color is sand with a black mask. The facial expression of
the Sloughi is gentle and melancholy, almost sad.

Whippet
The Whippet was developed during the latter part of the 19th
century from various sporting, coursing and running dogs,
including small greyhounds. Its name derives from the expression
‘whip it’, meaning ‘to move quickly.’ They were bred to hunt by sight,
coursing game in open areas at high speeds, and to race.
The Whippet’s ability to reach speeds of up to 60 kms (37 mph)
suited him to track racing. Coursing these dogs was an entertaining
form of gambling for the lower classes in England and the Whippet
was nicknamed ‘the poor man’s racehorse’. During this period of
time in English history, to make a living, the average citizen was
either a coal miner, a tenant farmer, or worked in the mills.
This breed was adopted by the miners of North-East England who
were keen dog racing enthusiasts but they also used the Whippet
for coursing, as it was capable of catching rabbits and hares. The
Whippet is an amazing athlete and its acceleration ability gives it
jack-rabbit starts, covering 200 metres in 10 seconds or less. The
Whippet gained the nickname of Snapdog from its ability to kill
rats and rabbits with a sharp snap. Although still used as a working
and racing dog and takes part in agility and obedience activities,
the main role is as a companion.
Whippets have been described as the perfect ‘all purpose dog.’
They make wonderful house dogs because of their very fine soft
coat and dog free odour. This, along with their gentle affectionate
nature makes them an ideal breed to bring up with small children.
The Whippet is quiet, easy to groom and is by no means as delicate
as they look. It is graceful in movement and rabbit fast on the lure
coursing field.

Brief History
Bred by the Tuareg, Fula and various other nomads of the Sahara
and sub-Saharan in the countries of Mali, Niger, Bukino Faso, and
southern Algeria. The primary function of the Azawakh in its native
land is that of protector and flock guard, to protect the animals
from the attack of jackals or hyenas during the night.
They are capable of reaching speeds between 60-70 km/hr. The
breed made its debut in Europe around 1970, first arriving in former
Yugoslavia and France. The official FCI standard was adopted in
1994. The breed was accepted in Australia in January 2012.
Brief Description
The Azawakh is particularly slender, elegant and showing great
refinement. Bone and muscle structure is visible under very fine,
dry skin. A rather narrow, long, fine head. Ears are set high. Neck
is long and muscular slightly arched. Topline straight rising to hips,
prominent withers, slightly arched loin and protruding hipbones.
The chest is narrow, well developed in depth but not reaching
elbows, high tuck up.
Long thighs, angulation not exaggerated, dry muscle. Feet
rounded, with tightly closed toes. Tail set is low, carried down
with slight curl at end with white tip or trace of white.

Health
Azawakhs are an incredibly sound coursing hound and very rarely
are there any serious coursing injuries.
Light, lissome movement which gives an impression of lightness
and elasticity. Very short fine coat. Colours are fawn with or
without brindling, with white patching limited to the extremities.
All shades are admitted, clear sand to dark fawn (mahogany).
Brindles should be black as exluding any other shade, the muzzle
can present a black mask. On the fore chest, white may be present
as white patched, confined to the base of the neck. The bib should
not extend past the point of the shoulder or go up on each side of
the neck. Each of the four limbs has a white stocking.
They are one of the most heat tolerant of all dog breeds and able
to work in temperatures of over 35 degrees, however, they are
intolerant of the cold as they have no natural protection. They get
cold easily and frequently shiver when temperatures begin to drop.
Azawakh are highly suspicious of strangers. The breed can be
extremely difficult to rehome. They are a highly intelligent breed.
Lifelong socialisation and firm but gentle handling are critical.
Like the Basenji the Azawakh bitch often has a single annual
season. Unassisted birth of healthy puppies is the norm. Litter
sizes are usually from four to six puppies.
22 - January 2016
Azawakh breeders have identified a number of problems that
appear in the breed with varying frequencies — Epilpesy,
Hypothyroidism, autoimmune disorders, wobblers disease, bloat
and cold intolerance.

The Azawakh is regarded as being among the most ancient breeds
of sighthounds. What is thought to be the first depictions of the
Azawakh appear on petroglyphs dating between 6,000 and 8,000
BC.
These depict sighthound-type dogs hunting wild beasts with
the tribes that roamed the Sahara, a time when the Sahara was
greener than it is today. They served as guardians, hunters and
companions.
The Sahara was bordered by oceans on the east and west coasts,
with fertile regions north and south. The fertile strip between
the Sahara and the Mediterranean is known as the Maghreb, the
wider strip between the Sahara and the Jungles became known
as the Sahel.
At the close of the wet phase in the four millennium BC, the Sahara
returned to desert and there became a formidable physical barrier
that saw the Azawakh almost totally isolated from the northern
dogs, but the ties to the pariah dogs to the south are close.
It is a theory that the saluki spread to the Maghreb, where due to
environment and breeding it developed into a similar type breed
called the Sloughi. The Taureg and Beja tribes who roamed the
great deserts of the Sahara brought their Sloughi dogs south. The
Sahelian tribes then bred the Sloughi into what is now known as
the Azawakh.
While this decent theory is feasible recent genetic testing has
shown that the Azawakh is closely related to the African Pariah
Dogs. These tests have also indicated that the Azawakh possesses
a unique variety of the glucose isomerase gene. The only other
canids known to have this gene are foxes, jackals, Italian wolves,
Sloughis and a few Japanese Breeds. This leads to speculation
that the Azawakh ancestors may have been occasionally crossed
with the Jackal.
If true the jackal may have introduced the survival traits to the
Azawakh that allows it to survive living in one of the worlds most
harshest and driest places.
The connection between the Pariah dogs of the Sahel and the
Azawakh is seen in the breeding practices of the Sahelian tribes
as they do not make a distinction between the Al hor (noble
breeds such as the Saluki, Afghan Hound, Sloughis) and the Kelb
(mongrels) Pariah Dog , allowing all their dogs to interbreed freely.
As a result of the environment the Azawahk lives in only the fittest
survive and this has brought out the hardiness and independence
that the breed is known for. They are pack hunters and they bump
down the quarry with their hindquarters after giving chase and
tiring it out.

Azawakh’s are typically a ‘one master’ dog and its territorial instinct
is highly developed. Suspicious and avoidant, even after thousands
of years of domestication, it continues to display feral behaviours
being highly independent and emotionally resilient. They have
been described as the ‘Warrior Class Dog’, very intelligent and
very protective of their home territory. When approached on
their home turf they can be very vocally intimidating and in total
contrast also be quite sensitive and very affectionate with those
it accepts. Their reactions to strangers can differ from friendly to
mildly curious to totally indifferent.
They are not an outgoing dog but should not appear to be panicky,
timid or aggressive to the point of attack. In the Sahel they are not
aggressive but have a tendency to prefer not be touched.
Like any sighthound the Azawakh needs lots of exercise and its
mind occupied. It is great for performance sports agility, lure
coursing, lure racing, obedience and the conformation ring.
Judging the Azawakh – Do’s and Dont’s
FCI judge and Azawakh breeder Dr Christian Vantu writes “if you
want to judge Azwakhs, first of all try to forget all other breeds,
shapes and proportions with which you are familiar, try to forget
also the classic dog temperament and behavior and be prepared
to accept something different.”

A Boy and
his Dogs
If you’ve wandered past the Group 4 ring, or General Special
ring, chances are you’ve seen them. Nobody can deny that
Kyall and Foodie the Pharaoh Hound make an excellent team.
With multiple Best in Show, Best in Group, Classes in Group
and Show, local and interstate Royal Group placements, and
Specialty wins, they’ve more than earned Foodie’s Supreme
Champion title.
Kyall has competed in Junior Handler competitions since 2008,
with some big wins to his name. First and Second places in age
group at the Sydney Royal 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, culminating
with winning the overall Sydney Royal Junior Handler competition
in 2014.
26 - January 2016
In 2014 and 2015, Kyall won back-to-back Melbourne Royal
Champion Showmanship competitions.
The new kids on the block are Foodie’s son, Alfred (Sleykh Suit N
Tie [AI]), who Kyall handled to Baby Puppy in Show at the 2015
Melbourne Royal, while Foodie was placed Group 4!
Arriving late last year is Roo (Ir Ch, Ir J C Hard Black Jack Cukker),
born in Hungary who went to Ireland for showing; where he very
quickly made up his points for his Junior and Irish Champion titles,
and even won a Group 2 in the very few months he was there.
While Foodie and Alfred are co-owned by Karen Lever and Annika
Oksa-Walker, and Roo owned by Karen Lever - it is clear that Kyall
has a very special place in each of the dogs’ hearts.
The next time you’re around the rings, keep an eye out for Kyall

The
Pharaoh Hound
The Pharaoh Hound is the oldest domesticated dog in
recorded history. There are Egyptian written references
dating back to 4000BC and a royal tomb of 2300BC contains
a wonderful illustration of a Pharaoh hound. It is thought
Phoenician traders took them to Malta where they were bred
unchanged for over 2000 years.
Average size, weight and lifespan:
Dogs: 56 - 63cms
Bitches: 53 - 61cms
Lifespan: About 12 - 14 years
Personality, characteristics and temperament:
Pharaohs are highly intelligent, affectionate, full of fun, and are
very good with children. Some are very outgoing at once with
strangers, others at first a little diffident.
Care requirements:
The short and glossy coat requires minimal upkeep, the occasional
grooming and bath will keep the Pharaoh looking and smelling
his best. Secure yard is a must.
Ideal owners:
Active people and families.
Compatibility with other pets:
Care with small animals. Not a problem with other dogs.
In conclusion:
Now you know a little about the Pharaoh Hound. If you have
decided this is the dog for you, or if you would like more
information, please contact either the relevant registered breeders
Club or Dogs Queensland.
Either will be able to give you information about available puppies
and also suggest dog shows where you can see the breed and
speak to a breeder.

European
Dog Show Holiday
Written by Rana Spencer
recently returned from a two month trip to France on a work
project and wanted to visit dog shows and some FCI lure
coursing to see the differences, and see some dogs in the flesh
that I had only seen via Facebook or the pedigree database
that saluki fanciers use.
After the World Dog Show in Milan (where I was fortunate to
handle a Peruvian Hairless, Huaco Huantuntupaq, from the famous
Huatuntupaq kennels in Peru), I went to a Lure Coursing event at
the Chateau Gerbevillers in Lorraine, France. The LC was unlike any
I had heard of, or experienced myself: simply amazing!
I met up with Daniela van der Lichte (Hadi El Basher salukis,
Belgium) and her four Salukis. I spoke with Daniela about future
dog events and she mentioned the FALAPA specialty event
(Afghan hound and Saluki club which has both a Show and LC
components), so we arranged that I would help her out, as two of
her smooth boys were entered in the same class.
I made time to visit and stay with Helen and Michael Williams
(Kasaque salukis) who bred my dog’s mother and paternal
grandfather, imported to Australia by Christine Stevens (Crister
salukis).
30 - January 2016
We had the traditional Kasaque garden party where I met eleven
year old smooth Lalique (Eng Ch Caspian’s L’aliq avec Kasaque) –
the last smooth to be titled in the UK. I have often been told by
judges that the smooth girl I show (Ch Crister Ameh) reminds them
very much of her grandmother Lalique and I agree. At the Windsor
Show the next day, there were so many smooths!
In fact, Helen told me that all of the smooths entered were either
her direct breeding, or had come down from her breeding. It was
a treat to see 66 salukis entered at an all-breeds show, judged by
specialist Marie Bryce-Smith, who judged the 2015 NSW Saluki
specialty show and gave our smooth girl Reserve Challenge.
About a week before the FALAPA specialty, Daniela had a bicycle
accident and cracked her ribs so I was to handle two of her salukis.
At the show, I met with Daniela and one of her oldest friends, Shera
Chuat of Al Firdous Salukis, formerly Tal Amal (Daniela’s foundation
bitch was one of Shera’s breeding). When Shera found out I was
handling Daniela’s boys and that I enjoyed showing, she added
one of her own smooth girls to my dance-card.
The FALAPA Afghan and Saluki show is run quite differently to
normal shows, and it is an experience!

All dogs are shown and critiqued in classes as normal, then a
‘Judge’s Selection’ is made to reduce the numbers. After class
judging is completed, the rings are combined and the classes are
judged again with placings given up to 6th, and always switching
between breeds and their respective judges.
In the Working Class (open to those dogs who are proven LC
competitors), I showed the effervescent smooth black grizzle,
Lupulus Hadi El Basher. Lupo showed perfectly and was rewarded
with 1st in Class, with his twin brother, LironPili Hadi El Basher
placing 2nd –both with Excellent gradings.
All three dogs I showed made it through to Judge’s Selection,
and when it came to Placings, Shera gave me another dog of her
breeding to show: a Junior bitch (Jaanaan-Vasari al Firdous) – yet
another smooth!
After winning the CAC, the judge told me she ordinarily wasn’t
taken with smooths.
This was my first experience in the placement ring and the girl
showed very well and was rewarded with 1st place and went on
to win BIS Junior! The young smooth girl is owned by Christine du
Rot Hazard (Arab Bahari’s salukis, France) and she reminded me of
the smooth girl I show in Australia – with good reason, they share
a very famous smooth relative – Arab Bahari’s Shaahin Tali. I spoke
later with Mme du Rot Hazard about our smooth girl in Australia
doing very well and she was pleased to hear it.
Finally we came to the pointy end of the competition: and this
Super-Smooth was chosen as Best in Show Saluki. Because it was
all spoken in French, I wasn’t really following it, just listening for the
dog’s number, which fortunately was 100 (‘cent’ in French – easy!).
On the podium for the last time, the judge (Clair Chryssolor,
Anasazi salukis), expressed that this boy’s condition, movement,
and style won it for him.
In the Open Class, I showed the classically handsome LahatPar Hadi
El Basher (who has been likened to the very famous Samoem’s
Sodom), who placed 2nd to Shera’s boy, both receiving Excellent
gradings; I also showed Shera’s smooth girl, Ghadiya-Razuna al
Firdous who placed 4th out of 13 present.
Lupo’s movement so reminded me of his brother, Lenoapayaz
Hadi El Basher (owned by Anita Langford, Al Shira salukis), who
I handled at the 2015 Sydney Royal, so it was nice to know the
movement is very typical among the entire litter – as are their
amazing temperaments!
The next day, the LC event was held on the same grounds as the
first ever LC competition! Though I preferred the LC at the Chateau,
this event gave me an opportunity to learn by comparison. The
chateau coursing was held without fences, yet this day’s coursing
was in a fenced field; some of the dogs from the Chateau coursing
were actually cutting the course because they know that the lure
will never go through fences so then are able to work out where
the lure would go.
At the end of the day, LironPili Hadi el Basher won the male saluki
CAC, with Shera’s young boy Ilias-Ushas al Firdous taking the
Reserve (with the two boys I showed the day before making up
the top few placings!).

While I enjoyed my time competing in the shows, I enjoyed far
more meeting the names behind a lot of these famous long-time
kennels, and having quality conversations to learn more about
the breed that chose me.
It was also a thrill seeing so many smooth Salukis, and that they
were placed well against their feathered counterparts. In one
conversation with a long-time Saluki breeder and judge, I was
told “if you don’t like smooths, then you shouldn’t judge Salukis”.
In Europe, there are a lot of dogs who are bred for either showing
or lure coursing/track racing BUT the ones who really caught my
eye were the ones who are bred for both beauty and performance.
To me, it is these dogs who most closely fit the standard, as they
are not exaggerated either way, and not only look like they can
perform their original function, they can also prove it on the
coursing field. Now that lure coursing is a recognised sport in
Australia, I can’t wait to see more Salukis and other Sighthounds
who will also be bred specifically to excel in both fields.

Rarer Sighthounds
FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Dogs Queensland Exclusive
Written by Rana Spencer
As a generalisation, the sighthound is known for its speed,
which forms its physique: slender, long-limbed, doliocephalic
head, and streamlined body. Regional variances affect how
the individual breeds look, act, their method of hunting, and
their prey.
The Sighthound breeds recognised by the ANKC are the Afghan
Hound, Azawakh, Borzoi, Deerhound, Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound,
Ibizan Hound, Italian Greyhound, Pharaoh Hound, Saluki, Sloughi,
and Whippet. While we are all familiar with these breeds, they are
only a fraction of the breeds that make up the Sighthound family.
In Europe, there are the numerous regional greyhound varieties:
Magyar Agar (Hungarian Greyhound), Chart Polski (Polish
Greyhound), Galgo Espanol (Spanish Greyhound), Hortaya Borzaya
(Eastern Greyhound), and Hrti (Old Croatian Sighthound) - though
not all are recognised as FCI breeds, they are distinctive in type.
The group called Oriental Sighthounds contain such breeds as
the Bakhmull Tazi, Luchak Tazi, and Khalagh Tazi (resembling the
Afghan, Sloughi, and Saluki respectively), and the Taigan. The
Xigou is a Chinese breed, most similar to a saluki, but typically with
roman nose and a few other differences – though interestingly,
not all puppies in a litter are born with the roman profile!
The Indian breeds, such as Mudhol Hound, Caravan Hound, Kanni,
Chippiparai, Rampur Hound, Rajapalayam (Poligar hound), and
Mahratta Greyhound are mostly province-based, and there are
reports of dedicated groups becoming involved with the Indian
Kennel Club to promote and preserve the breeds and work
towards recognition and creating breed standards, while some
breeds are already recognised and shown.
The Oriental Sighthounds are presumed to be variants of a
landrace/product of the Silk Road trading routes. Currently, there
are DNA collections, and other projects being undertaken to
establish origins and relationships between these dogs.
Facebook has become a fabulous tool for the sharing of
information and resources on some of these rare breeds, and to
allow people from outside their regions to learn about them. There
are many groups that feature one breed, or a variety of similar
breeds to compare and discuss.

Zone 2 Dog World Column January 2016
The most recent item I viewed was about an exhibitor wearing a
jacket that had their breeding prefix on it. This is not in line with
the conditions of entry (Rule 148e).
Not much to report in Zone 2 for the month of January. I trust
that all members enjoyed their Christmas and New Year break
and are ready for another busy year.
There was much discussion that the steward or another official
should have detected this and dealt with it.
We will be in for another big year in the Zone 2 region with a heavy
schedule commencing from February / March.

Please support the Drought Fundraiser shows in Gladstone in

the effects of drought.
Show Workers Training
Following training in Bundaberg, Rockhampton and Mackay in
December 2015 we hopefully have some new accredited workers
for 2016.
Members who wish to access show workers training can contact
me to register for an upcoming session.
I would like to extend a huge thank you from Dogs Queensland and
all exhibitors to those who worked so hard in 2015 to make shows
possible and those who are putting their hand up for the future.
Maryborough Show - a bit of a fright…
We need to consider that at our shows the stewards and other
workers are generally extremely busy so will not be specifically
monitoring the finer points such as what logos may or may not
be on clothing.
I would stress to all members that the officials are volunteers who
are doing the best they can in the circumstances and they will not
always be able to detect every little thing that happens.
As a participant however, if we observe something that doesn’t
appear correct we should bring it to the attention of an official,
and in cases like this, it would be best to locate the Show Manager
and advise them so it can be dealt with as the steward is already
engaged with ensuring exhibits get into the ring.
If we have seen an issue and don’t say something about it, we
can’t justifiably complain about the situation as we have had the
opportunity to take responsibility to do something about it and
have elected not to.
So the moral of this type of situation is that where a possible issue
is identified, the Show Manager should be approached and the
matter discussed. There is no value and no benefit in creating a
social media storm after the fact.
Submissions
Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome.
Please feel free to send to me at [email protected]
Until next time.
At the Maryborough Show on 31st October, members and their
dogs were invited to participate in a Halloween parade. This event
was lots of fun with several members doing a terrific job and really
getting into the spirit of it.
Unfortunately, the night-time photos didn’t turn out so well so
I don’t have any to show you, but it was a great bit of fun for
members and well done to the club for running with it.
Incidents at Shows
Not so much limited to Zone 2, but there are increasing anecdotes
appearing on Facebook and other social media maligning
exhibitors breaking rules at shows.

In the October 2015 issue of The Queensland Dog World I was
so disheartened by the Presidents message. Two thirds of the
message was taken up addressing rumours, Dogs Queensland
‘politics’ and people being horrid on Facebook. The final third I
was interested to note that progress is being made sorting out
the camping schemozzle at Durack and information on Puppy
and Dog of the Year.
I don’t know about you, but I’d much prefer to read about the
progress that’s being made, than our President having to address
pathetic gossip. For every serial complainer, gossip monger and
troublemaker in the dog world, it is my genuine belief that there
are fifty more of us that love showing dogs, are willing to embrace
changes for the better and who are grateful to the hard working
people that make this crazy world of ours spin.
I remember being at dog shows as a kid in the 90s, under those
gaudy red and yellow Pal umbrellas (where on earth did they
come from?).
34 - January 2016
I’m going to support my competitors, even when they beat me.
Even if I secretly think I deserved the win instead (let’s face it, we all
think that). I’m going to actually get involved in my clubs and help
out. I will actively encourage new exhibitors and welcome them
to our sport. I will do my best to make my contribution to the Dog
World a positive one. For those of us who I so genuinely believe
are in the majority, who are currently sitting by and watching as
drama unfolds and threatens the sport we love, I ask you to do the
same. Choose sportsmanship. Choose encouragement. Choose
to contribute.
To kick it off, let’s talk about losing.
We’ve all seen firsthand another exhibitor lose it when the judging
doesn’t go their way. I will be the first to admit that there have
been a couple of occasions where I have gotten back to the gazebo
and muttered a few choice words about getting buried myself.
I have also seen the fallout when, in the heat of the moment,
someone has had a total brain-fart and had a go at the judge, or
very nearly gotten into fisticuffs with someone else ringside. Woah
mama. That’s a fast way to get everybody talking about you! It’s
moments like these that remind me that dog-showing is just like
any other sport, except in this sport, your favourite players also
happen to be the very creatures you share your heart and home
with.
Like any other sport though, if you behave atrociously when you
lose, eventually you will find yourself in a world of trouble. That
trouble might be from your state canine control body, but more
likely, the trouble will be when you’re standing ringside with knots
in your stomach, feeling increasingly defensive and ready to blow
your stack at any moment. Let’s be honest, we all know people
like that and there’s a high chance we’ve all felt like that at one
point or another.
I’ve had the privilege of growing up surrounded by some amazing
role models in the dog show world, so let me share some tips that
I learned from them over the years.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Club Interest
The Queensland Dog World
Look for the positives in your competitors’ dogs before getting
your knickers in a twist about their faults. Most of the judges I
know judge this way.
They first look at all the things about a dog that clearly reflect the
standard, then they review how severely any faults deviate from
that standard. If you can clearly see something that a judge really
likes in another dog, it can make it easier to smile and shake your
competitors hand when they beat you.
Smile. Even if you’re seething, fake a smile. It’s a sad reality that
in this day and age, judges and stewards expect bad attitudes
from many of the exhibitors. Just as they will remember you (and
probably look you up online after the show) if you have a temper
tanty, they will also remember the handler who is happy, warm
and professional in the ring. Being thoughtful of the steward
and respectful to the judge won’t help you win if your dog isn’t
deserving, but it certainly can’t hurt.
If there’s a drama ringside, abort! Don’t be that guy that rushes
in to a volatile situation and fans the flames. Don’t start throwing
shade at whoever you think is in the wrong so that you can have
a big old gossip about it later. The safest way to put out a fire is to
deprive it of oxygen, so stand back, let the person make a wally of
himself or herself and avoid making the situation worse. If you’re
genuinely concerned about the person, check in with them later
when they’ve cooled off.
In any competition, there is a winner and a lot of disappointed
not-winners. You can be Best in Show at the morning show and
get beaten in Class in the afternoon (I’ve had THAT happen!). At
the end of the day, the only person who can control how you feel
about having a loss is you. You can choose to be a ‘loser’ about it
and let it ruin your day, or you can choose to look for the positives,
smile and support your fellow exhibitor. That choice effects only
you, so for me personally, I choose to have a glass of wine, cuddle
my dogs and enjoy my day regardless.
Over the coming months, check your catalogue for Mexicatl or
Ashblanc Chihuahuas (North Queensland I will do my best to
come visit) and if I’m entered, come on down to group one and
say hi. Let’s acknowledge that the Dog World on a national level
has a culture problem and let us Queenslanders lead the way in
addressing it, one disgusting bright green cocktail onion at a time.
Until February my friends.

I moved to USA in 2009 leaving behind my two whippets with
Mum. I had decided that I wasn’t going to take them with me
and I would live without a dog for my time in Texas.
Well that lasted 6 weeks!
I got in contact with the Whippet network and put it out there that
I was after a young Whippet and in a matter of 10 days I was in
contact with Dwight and Paula Caffee from Oklahoma (Wildhare
Whippets). They had a young male looking for an understanding
home. Badger and I became a team on Thanksgiving weekend. It
was a tough road in the beginning to say the least but we made
it out the other side.
I competed in agility in Australia so it seemed only natural that
we pursue that avenue.
36 - January 2016
Badger figured out the agility game quite quickly (much to
my surprise!) and we were working on our CGC title as well. I
established friendships with so many Whippet people in Austin
- they suggested Badger try lure coursing and the rest they say
is history!
It took Badger a little while to figure out that it was ok to leave my
side (we all know how special he is) but when he did it was magical
to watch - he was flying.
We spent most weekends in the car driving for hours and hours to
attend various lure coursing meets all through Texas, Oklahoma,
Louisiana, Colorado just to name a few. Thank goodness for the
relaxed laws regarding dogs staying in motels - it made traveling
so much easier.

At his peak he made it to number 17 lure coursing whippet in USA
which was no mean feat given the lack of trials available within a
reasonable driving distance from Austin. At his fastest - a friend
used a speed gun and clocked him at 38mph!
I withdrew him from the rest of the coursing season when I knew
I was returning to Australia as I couldn’t risk an injury.
We both arrived in Australia and within 10 days I had to return to
Townsville where my substantive teaching position was based.
Naturally Badger and Ceilidh (Kaylee) came with me. They both
got very used to our Sunday morning walks on the beach.
When Lure Coursing became a recognised sport in January of this
year, Badger was given dispensation to start in the Open Stakes at
Lure Coursing as he was the only Sighthound in Australia at that
stage that held an official Lure Coursing title and who could qualify
other sighthounds to compete in the Open Stakes.
In the beginning when Lure Coursing became official, he
would sometimes do up to five runs in a morning, equating to
approximately between 2 to 3 kms.
He is now well on his way to gaining his Australian Lure Coursing
Title and the winner of the 2015 Queensland Sighthound
Association Crister Perpetual Trophy for highest scoring
Sighthound in the Open Stakes class. He is loved by everyone
and is a very special whippet who has contributed immensely to
the sport of lure coursing here in Australia.

Upon returning to Brisbane - not quite sure how it all came
about but I was asked to be on the working party to establish a
Sighthound Club to promote our dual purpose hounds. Naturally
this was something I was very excited to be a part of and the rest
is history. Here we all are today celebrating the end of our first
year of competition.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the club to get where
we are today.

I am a retired public school teacher. My husband and I live in the
country side close to Niagara Falls, Ontario. In 1974, I acquired my first
Giant Schnauzer. It has been a love affair with dogs ever since. In the
beginning, I delved into obedience training, conformation showing,
tracking, schutzhund and everything else the dog world had to offer.
A few years later, breeding came into the scene. Under the Bluechip
prefix, I have bred numerous Canadian and American Champions.
Many of my Giant Schnauzers have had major specialty wins, Best in
Shows wins. Best Puppy in Show wins, and top rankings in the breed in
Canada. In 1988, my Giant was #1 Working Dog in Canada. He was also
#5 Working the Dog the previous year and was the top Giant Schnauzer
in Canada for 5 consecutive years. This dog was an influential stud
dog in both Canada and the US and he paved the way for making the
breed a serious competitor in the group. In 1995, my daughter and I,
purchased a Papillon. This led to showing, and trialing in obedience
and in agility. It was a whole new world from a toy dog perspective. We
now have a conscientious successful breeding program going on with
Papillons also!
Dogs have been a constant in Fred’s life. While the American Cocker
Spaniel was his first breed, it was the Doberman that really started his
commitment to the world of showing and breeding purebred dogs.
His first dobe, which was acquired in 1990 became the top winning
and a top-producing bitch during her time and was behind all the
Dobermans that carry the Aegis prefix. Many of her progeny became
multi- Best In Show and Best in Specialty Show Winners, in the process
earning for themselves the Philippine Champion, Grand Champion
and Hall of Fame titles.
First Afghan Hound in 1973. First Litter produced AKC and GKC
CH group winners and BIS, SBIS winner. Our dogs now featured
prominently in the pedigrees of some of the top Afghan Kennels in
UK, Canada, USA and Scandinavia. We bred a SIRE OF SIGNIFICANCE
which produced top winners and producers in USA and CANADA.
Several of our Afghans became multi BIS and SBIS winners. BREEDER
OWNER HANDLED.
As well as being actively involved in showing and breeding, I am an
involved member, holding various executive positions, in many clubs.
Currently, I am President of Giant Schnauzer Canada and Director of
Papillon Canada. I’m also a long standing member of both breed clubs
in the United States. I also work in the administrative end of planning
dog events for a few all breed clubs in my area. I am approved as
an all breed judge by the Canadian Kennel Club. As well, as judging
throughout Canada, I have judged in the US, Colombia, Ecuador, Korea
and China. I have been honoured to judge the National Specialties
of both the Giant Schnauzer and the Papillon in Canada. I have
also judged the American Giant Schnauzer National Specialty, and
numerous American Regional Specialties for the Papillon.
He has also shown and bred a number of Champion Whippets
including the very first local born to attain the Philippine Hall of
Fame title for this breed. He was a past president of the Philippine
Doberman Federation, was the founding president of the Cavite
Canine Club Inc, and has been a member of the Board of Directors
of the Philippine Canine Club, Inc. (PCCI) since 2008. Since 2009,
he has held various positions for the PCCI including Vice President,
Treasurer and Corporate Secretary, Currently, he Is the Chairman of
the Registration Committee and Corporate Planning Committee.
He Judged his first breed in 2000 and was first allowed to judge
All-Breeds in 2010. He has judged in various parts of the Philippines,
as well as in Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka,
India and South Africa.
Ana Beatrix Knoll
We also had Chinese Cresteds for 15 years, starting with an ENG/AM/
CDN Champion of superb type. We are no longer involved in the breed.
We also owned and showed Bouviers, Bearded Collies and Smooth Fox
terriers. l started judging in 1991 and became ALL BREED JUDGE in
2003 I have been honoured to have judged ALL BREED and SPECIALTY
SHOWS in Canada, USA, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand,
Colombia, Hong Kong, Mexico, Japan and China.
We have been invited speakers at TWO Afghan Hound World
Congresses and been interviewed by 5 International Afghan Hound
magazines and Three Canadian All Breed Magazines. We also present
a judges study group SEMINAR on the AFGHAN HOUND. We produced
several NUMBER 1 ’ BREEDER OWNER HANDLED’ Afghans in Canada
(Top MALE and FEMALE) and have had several dogs in USA Top twenty.
We bred the SIRE of the Afghan Hound Club of America Futurity
winner, and same dog sired AHCA BOS National winner. He was top
AFGHAN in Canada twice. I enjoy judging and consider it a serious
responsibility to evaluate breeding stock which is the future of our sport.
I’ve started my dog’s interest in 1980, when I owned an English
Cocker. My first show as visitor was in August 1980 and in
October the same year I was showing the first dog in the ring.
An Afghanhound, my first show dog. My husband Mario Knoll
began his Lhasa breeding about the same year, and that time
he was very involved with dobermanns too. For many years we
have worked both breeds, Lhasas and Afghans, and we had made
several champions in Brazil and abroad. Our Kennel called Excalibur
Quest worked with Pugs from 1996 till 2003, and from this year till
now we’ve been very involved with Pomeranians, as breeder and
exhibitors.
We will continue to breed and show our own Afghan hounds.
We were founding members of the following dubs.
Wentworth County Kennel dub, Erie Shores Kennel Club, Ontario Afghan
Hound Association, and Southern Counties Hound Breech Association.
Current Member of Southern Counties Hound Breeds Assoc. Southern
Ontario Sight hound Association JJFE Member of CKC, Canadian Dog
Judges Assoc. And in USA, Member of Pasco Florida Kennel club,
Hernando County Kennel dub and the Florida Judges Study Group.
Actually, we are not showing our dogs very often but we still have

as the first Asian Judge to officiate at the German Shepherd Dog
Specialty held in Sydney Australia, he was again sort after for the same
event in the year 2000 and again for the GSD Specialty held in Brisbane
Australia in 2001.
Carol Gunn
In his youth he was raised with Rough Collies, Schipperkes and
Pekingese. The Rough Collies were used for herding Jersey Milk
Cows which required special patience as the cows were not allowed
to run due to being heavy milk bearing Schipperkes guarding the
stables and the Pekingese were the ‘guard dogs’ of the home. In 1963
he obtained his first non registered Boston Terrier and has never
been without one till 1999, During his student years in England and
Canada (1965 to 1968) his parents looked after his Bostons. In 1969
he obtained his first registered Boston. Further studies (1972 and
1973) in Canada again required his parents to keep a ‘very careful
eye’ on his precious stock. He has bred 50 plus Boston Terrier and
French Bulldog champions. Since then the ownership of Bostons has
included importing from Canada, England, New Zealand and the
USA and exporting to Zimbabwe, Portugal and Israel.
I am looking forward to my trip to Australia to judge! It is wonderful to
meet new people and see dogs all over the world. We have a common
bond. No matter who we are, or where we are from, the love is the same!
Tan Oo Hock
In addition, he has officiated at specialty events for Boxer, Doberman,
Golden Retriever, Miniature Pincer, Pomeranian, Pug and Rottweiler
breeds. In a twenty year span of service to the Malaysian Kennel
Association, Mr. Tan Oo Hock has served as President, Vice President and
for various Sub-committees. As a former Director of the Asian Kennel
Union, he was elected as a standing committee member in 2002.

I started in the dog world with my husband Mark in 1985, with
Newfoundlands, which we successfully showed for a number of years.
I have also owned and showed PMD and Samoyeds and owned a mini
schnauzer, I currently own an American Cocker. I now don’t show but
am on 5 committees and work at shows stewarding and ticket writing. I

My involvement in the Dog World began in the earfy 1970s helping
my Uncle with his English Springer Spaniels, but It was not until the
mid 1980s that I began to actively breed, and handle my own dogs.
I have always been drawn to the Gundog Group and have exhibited
Cocker Spaniels, English Setters, Irish Setters and my beloved Pointers.
I entered Judges Training In 1999 and now hold six groups at
Championship Level and hope to complete my final Group in 2016. I
have judged in most states of Australia and also in New Zealand. I am
currently the Assistant Coordinator for Group 3 Judges Training, serve
on the Breaches Panel and on the Committee of the Ladies Kennel
Association of Qld. I consider it an honour each time I am asked to
Judge and hope I can give something back to the sport I love.
Garfield Franklin Van Der Spuy
His judging ‘career’ started in 1968 but only really took off in 1976
when studies were completed. Presently he is an all breeds, and Best
in Show judge since 1984. He has judged more than 25 specialist
breed club shows. He has judged at home (South Africa) and
internationally, Namibia, Zimbabwe, England, Australia, New Zealand,
America, Russia, Canada and Brazil. Franklin served as a councillor
of Kennel Union of South Africa representing Orange Free State and
Namibia for six years. He presently owns and shows Staffordshire Bull
Terriers and Boston Terriers and is very involved as a Kennel Union
of Southern Africa moderator for aspirant judges’ reports. He is a
life member of the Pietermaritzburg Kennel Club. In his retirement
he is a keen collector of stamps - thematically ‘dogs on stamps. He
loves growing and showing roses and is still involved in growing and
breeding Clivias.
