This week I would like to pay tribute to some of the priests who have served our Parish in the past. Father Michael Hunt served the parishioners of our Parish during the 1960’s and 1970’s. He was a moderator for the Rosary Society and was involved in many of the card parties and dinner dances. Personally, as a child I liked his friendly smile and his homilies were always so interesting to me. He was transferred to Saint Francis deChantel where he celebrated his 50th anniversary Mass. He passed away on November 4, 2000. Do you remember our Parish during the 1960’s? If you do, you would also remember Father Victor Boyle. Father Boyle was part of our Parish family and was Director of the CCD program from 1960-1970. The program consisted of 800 public school children. Father Boyle was very involved in his work so he visited classrooms, gave homework and follow-up testing. I am told that he tested the teachers as well! Father Boyle also saw the youth growing and drifting away from the Church. Therefore, in 1964 he founded the Teenage Club or TAC and expanded the youth program. It was a multifaceted program which featured an annual play, held dances and also provided spiritual guidance. Father Boyle was also the sports moderator. He along with a group of parishioners secured the lease for the ball field on 53rd street. Father Boyle came back to visit Saint Athanasius a couple of years ago, and greeted people after the Mass. Father John Wilson succeeded Father Boyle as Director of CCD. Father Wilson became known for meeting and greeting each and every bus as it arrived with children for release-time instruction. Also, on rainy days he would supply umbrellas for them as well. The children loved and appreciated his gentle ways. He was also the moderator for the Rosarians and he was well liked by many because of his warm nature. He was transferred to the Holy Family Parish. Our Parish grew and prospered because all these men dedicated their lives to teaching parishioners both young and old, that God loves us all! Jackie Mazzola-Santulli If you have any memories you’d like to share, please feel free to contact me at (347) 554-0831 or leave them at the rectory. OGGI, DOMENICA, 21 APRILE - G.I.S.A. Come sempre sara’ servito caffe’ e rinfreschi.
