A!Film!Comes!Together!

Much!has!been!written!about!the!manner!in!which!New!YorkRbased!
production!company!Borderline!Films!operates,!for!good!reason!–!few!independent!
film!companies!have!such!a!unique!structure.!Comprised!of!three!principals!–!
Antonio!Campos,!Sean!Durkin!and!Josh!Mond!–!the!company!functions!as!a!
collective!as!directing!and!producing!duties!rotate!–!Mond!and!Durkin!produced!for!
Campos!(Afterschool,!Simon!Killer),!Campos!and!Mond!produced!for!Durkin!(Martha!

personal!story!was!a!relationship!between!a!mother!and!her!son,!a!story!about!what!
it!was!like!dealing!with!my!mother’s!cancer.!James!White!isn’t!my!exact!story!R!it!
wouldn't!be!possible!to!tell!my!story!in!one!movie!R!but!it!definitely!came!from!a!
place!of!wanting!to!understand!things!that!I!was!dealing!with,!things!that!I!am!still!
dealing!with.”!!

For!Mond,!tackling!such!a!personal!story!enabled!him!to!achieve!a!certain!
kind!of!personal!catharsis.!While!the!film!isn’t!directly!autobiographical,!being!
forced!to!confront!themes!that!reverberated!from!his!personal!experiences!enabled!
him!to!approach!his!personal!history!from!a!new!perspective.!“Making!the!film!
allowed!me!to!explore!some!pretty!painful!stuff,!because!of!the!way!the!creative!
process!works.!To!paraphrase!the!playwright!John!Guare!‘going!into!your!
imagination!makes!selfRreflection!bearable.’!It!wasn't!easy!to!engage!in!that!
reflection,!though.”!Mond!explained!that!being!able!to!step!outside!his!personal!
memories!through!the!objectivity!of!film!enabled!him!to!work!through!his!pain,!in!a!
manner!that!proved!therapeutic.!“I!took!things!from!my!personal!experiences!that!
made!me!upset!as!I!was!writing!or!thinking!about!them,!and!I!tried!to!find!some!
beauty!in!them.!It!was!a!painful!process,!and!my!partners!who!worked!on!the!movie!
helped!push!me!to!the!other!side.!Who!wants!to!sit!down!and!think!about!the!worst!
things!that!have!ever!happened!to!them?!But!this!experience!has!been!very!
therapeutic.!The!artists!who!inspire!me!are!people!who!explore!themselves,!explore!
things!they!want!to!understand.!Sometimes!I!think!that's!what!making!a!movie!is!R!
trying!to!figure!something!out!as!a!way!to!make!it!bearable.”!

!As!Mond!began!crafting!James!White!–!a!story!of!the!titular!character,!a!bornR
andRbred!New!Yorker!who!parties!hard,!shirks!his!professional!responsibilities!and!
sticks!close!to!his!friends!as!he!attempts!to!deal!with!his!grief!over!his!mother!Gail’s!
worsening!cancer!–!he!relied!closely!on!his!own!friends!and!partners,!those!
individuals!who!helped!push!him!to!the!other!side,!as!he!puts!it.!Among!those!
individuals!are!Campos!and!Durkin,!who!are!among!the!most!esteemed!independent!
filmmakers!working!today.!“I!can't!imagine!having!made!this!movie!without!Antonio!
and!Sean,”!Mond!said.!“It's!very!rare!to!have!people!around!you!who!unquestionably!
have!your!best!intentions!in!mind,!where!it's!not!about!ego.!They!just!care.!Our!
connection!to!one!another,!the!way!that!we!work!together,!it!really!spreads!out!to!
our!actors!and!our!crew.!I!think!that's!pretty!rare,!in!the!film!industry,!to!be!
uncomplicated!by!motives!or!personal!agendas.!Every!decision!I!made,!I!was!
encouraged!to!do!what!was!best!for!the!film.!Additionally,!I!had!two!directors!I!
admire!who!I!could!lean!on!and!ask!for!help,!and!get!encouragement!from.”!!Both!
Campos!and!Durkin!were!closely!involved!in!Mond’s!writing!process.!“When!I!was!
writing!the!film,!Antonio!and!I!went!up!to!his!grandparents’s!farmhouse!upstate,!
where!we!shot!Martha.!He!would!help!me!organize!my!thoughts!and!talk!me!
through!things.!Sean!came!back!to!the!city!a!few!months!before!shooting!began!and!
he!worked!with!me!on!the!script,!trying!to!shorten!and!improve!it.!They!were!
fighting!for!me!all!the!way.”!For!Campos!and!Durkin,!advising!Mond!was!a!
straightforward!task.!“We!told!Josh!to!trust!his!gut,”!they!explained.!“Josh!has!always!
had!very!good!instincts!and!as!a!producer!is!able!to!use!them!quite!effortlessly.!We!
encouraged!him!to!direct!in!the!same!way.”!

Once!the!script!was!finished,!the!casting!process!began.!The!crucial!roles!to!
fill!were!those!of!James,!his!mother!Gail,!and!James’s!best!friend!Nick.!In!choosing!
Christopher!Abbott!(Girls)!to!play!James,!Mond!was!able!to!call!upon!the!talents!of!a!
longtime!friend.!“Susan!Shopmaker,!our!casting!director,!has,!over!the!years,!
introduced!us!to!a!lot!of!young!actors!who!are!really!talented,!who!have!become!our!
friends!R!Brady!Corbet,!Christopher!Abbott,!David!Call.!Christopher!was!in!Martha,!
and!he!was!incredible!in!that.!He's!a!sweet!guy,!extremely!talented,!and!since!we're!
so!close!I!told!him!that!I!felt!like!we!understood!each!other,!and!that!I!knew!the!only!
person!who!could!do!it!was!him.”!Abbott!also!felt!that!his!friendship!with!Mond!
proved!helpful!in!the!process!of!discovering!James’s!character.!“Because!Josh!and!I!
are!friends,!we!had!time!before!shooting!to!sit!down!while!he!worked!on!different!
drafts!of!the!script,!to!see!what!worked.!We!talked!about!anything!from!wardrobe!to!
the!way!James!talks!to!the!way!the!situations!in!the!story!are!unfolding.!We!have!a!
kind!of!shorthand!report!with!each!other.!By!the!time!we!were!making!the!film!all!
the!big!talking!points!had!already!been!discussed!so!we!could!try!as!many!different!
things!as!we!wanted!to.!All!of!the!homework!had!been!done!already.”!!

Working!with!Cynthia!Nixon!(Sex!and!the!City)!came!to!be!after!Nixon!
reached!out!to!Mond!after!reading!the!script,!and!the!two!ended!up!having!a!
conversation!in!which!they!bonded.!“I!had!lunch!with!Cynthia!and!we!shared!a!lot!of!
personal!experiences.!Like!me,!Cynthia's!from!New!York,!she!grew!up!on!the!Upper!
West!Side.!She!had!a!close!relationship!with!her!mother,!who!passed!away!from!
cancer.!Cynthia!had!cancer!herself.!My!personal!connections!with!her!were,!I!
identified!with!her!in!my!own!right,!but!she!also!reminded!me!of!many!women!in!
my!life.!She!seemed!like!she!would!have!been!really!good!friends!with!my!mom.”!For!
Nixon,!the!personal!connection!between!her!and!Mond!was!also!of!crucial!
importance.!“When,!I!read!the!script,!I!certainly!thought!the!portrait!of!what!it's!like!
to!care!for!a!parent!with!terminal!cancer!was!very!true,”!she!explained.!“I!also!
thought!that!meeting!with!Josh!was!really!the!thing!that!put!me!over!the!edge.!He's!
such!a!fascinating!person,!and!an!incredible!young!filmmaker.!I!was!very!honored!
that!he!would!entrust!me!to!portray!this!character!in!her!dying!weeks.”!

Scott!“Kid!Cudi”!Mescudi,!a!musician!as!well!as!an!actor,!entered!the!picture!
via!his!music,!which!was!influential!for!Mond.!“I!was!listening!to!Scott’s!music!while!
I!was!writing!the!script,!and!I!respected!what!he!explored!in!his!music.!A!friend!of!
ours!was!in!a!movie!with!him,!so!Antonio!asked!him!if!he!could!get!the!script!to!
Scott,!who!liked!it,!and!he!was!great.!He!reminded!me!of!a!culmination!of!all!my!
buddies!I!grew!up!with.”!With!Scott,!Mond!had!found!the!ideal!actor!to!play!Nick.!!

Inside!James*White*
!
When!we!meet!James,!he’s!partying!hard!in!a!New!York!nightclub.!Shortly!
thereafter,!he’s!at!a!shiva!call!his!mother!is!hosting!for!his!recently!deceased!father,!
despite!the!fact!that!he!and!Gail!had!been!divorced;!James!is!upset!by!his!loss,!but!
more!importantly!is!extremely!protective!of!his!mother.!When!he!suspects!his!
mother!might!feel!overwhelmed!by!all!of!the!mourners!in!her!home,!he!immediately!
–!and!loudly!–!kicks!everyone!out.!The!deep!emotional!connection!between!James!
and!Gail!is!clearly!the!focus!of!these!early!scenes.!As!Abbott!explained,!“The!crux!of!
their!relationship!is!that!they!love!each!other!and!depend!on!each!other!in!some!
healthy!and!some!unhealthy!ways.”!Mond!added:!“I!wanted!to!set!up!that!it's!been!
just!James!and!his!mom,!on!their!own,!for!a!while.!I!wanted!to!set!up!how!small!the!
world!was!for!James!and!Gail.!I!think!the!way!he!tells!everyone!at!the!shiva!call!to!
leave!is!partly!selfish!and!partly!selfless.!He's!protecting!his!mother,!but!there's!
more!to!it!than!that!R!he's!human,!he's!hung!over,!he!has!no!patience!anymore.!He's!
been!shitty.!Had!he!not!gone!out!and!been!selfRdestructive!the!night!before,!he!
probably!wouldn't!have!behaved!in!that!manner.”!!

James’s!selfRdestructive!behavior!–!drinking!excessively,!doing!various!drugs,!
partying!till!all!hours!–!is!established!early!on!in!the!film,!and!will!only!increase!as!
the!story!goes!on.!In!one!intense!sequence,!he!and!Nick!go!to!a!bar!and!initiate!a!
huge!brawl,!which!they!only!flee!from!after!James!manages!to!steal!a!bottle!of!
Jameson!from!behind!the!bar.!Mond!sees!James’s!behavior!as!closely!tied!to!his!
environment.!“I!think!some!of!James's!selfRdestructive!behavior!is!a!result!of!
growing!up!in!New!York.!As!much!as!I!love!the!New!York!and!all!it!has!to!offer!
growing!up!there,!you!don't!have!room!to!breathe,!everything's!moving!every!day.!
You!don't!have!much!time,!as!a!kid,!to!stop!and!reflect,!so!you're!just!used!to!
reacting.!It’s!also!due!to!the!fact!that!he's!been!dealing!with!Gail’s!cancer,!and!he's!
just!so!intolerant.!He!does!what!he!wants,!he's!frustrated!about!other!things,!and!
things!that!wouldn't!annoy!most!people!annoy!him.”!!

Seemingly!more!and!more!on!edge,!James!decides!that!what!he!needs!is!a!
change!of!scenery,!and!he!and!Nick!decide!to!head!to!Mexico!for!a!vacation.!
Temporarily,!James!seems!at!peace,!wading!in!the!ocean,!relaxing!for!the!first!time!
since!the!film!began.!His!charming!side!emerges!as!he!chats!up!a!young!girl,!Jayne!
(Makenzie!Leigh),!by!the!beach,!and!begins!dating!her.!(Only!later!does!James!realize!
Jayne!is!in!high!school.)!For!Abbott,!it!was!an!opportunity!to!show!James’s!skill!at!
talking!his!way!into!things,!regardless!of!whether!or!not!they’re!in!his!best!interest.!
“Josh!and!I!spoke!about!how!James!has!this!way!of!talking.!He!talks!his!way!in!and!
out!of!things.!He!has!a!certain!set!of!skills!in!that!realm,!a!way!of!picking!up!on!what!
people!want!to!hear.!But!I!think!his!relationship!with!Jayne!is!a!weird!thing.!Because!
of!the!big!problems!in!his!life,!he’s!not!in!the!right!mindset!to!dive!into!a!healthy!
relationship.!He’s!searching!for!attention!from!anything!or!anyone.!So!he!goes!headR
in!for!her.!He!almost!forces!her!in!a!way.!I!think!he!has!love!for!her!but!he!has!a!lot!of!
things!going!on!in!his!life!that!aren’t!necessarily!right,!and!winds!up!treating!her!

James!ends!up!returning!to!New!York,!with!Nick!and!Jayne!–!who!happens!to!
be!from!New!York!as!well!–!when!he!learns!that!Gail’s!health!is!failing.!In!fact,!he!
learns!that!his!mom!is!now!in!hospice!care,!and!has!been!for!some!time.!However,!
she!had!withheld!that!information!from!him,!as!she!didn’t!want!to!upset!James!any!
further.!Once!James!realizes!that!Gail!is!in!hospice!–!with!the!full!understanding!of!
what!that!designation!means!–!his!selfRdestructive!behavior!dramatically!increases.!
One!night,!in!a!hotel!room!with!Jayne!and!Nick,!James!has!something!of!an!emotional!
breakdown,!screaming!at!Nick!as!if!he’s!trying!to!initiate!a!fight!–!though!what!he!
seems!to!actually!be!seeking!is!some!emotional!comfort.!The!scene!is!one!of!the!
film’s!tensest!moments,!and!for!Mond,!it!also!served!as!a!key!turning!point!in!the!
story.!“The!movie!found!its!way!to!break!into!five!sections.!The!first!is!about!who!

Abbott!found!shooting!this!scene!to!be!particularly!memorable.!“James!is!
someone!who!bottles!things!up!and!whenever!he!needs!to!explode,!he!just!does.!
That!scene!is!about!someone!who!doesn’t!know!how!to!deal!with!his!emotions.!It’s!
one!of!those!scenes!you’re!excited!about!but!also!terrified!to!shoot.!On!the!day,!I!had!
made!a!request!to!have!it!be!the!last!thing!that!day,!so!we!were!a!bit!tired!and!
frustrated!by!the!time!we!started!it.!When!we!shot!it!we!did!it!in!one!continuous!
shot!where!the!camera!followed!everything!that!was!going!on,!and!we!did!it!over!
and!over!again.!So!by!the!fourth!to!tenth!time!you!kind!of!come!into!this!naturally!
high!state.!The!agreement!I!had!with!Josh!was!that!we!would!keep!doing!it,!lets!keep!
trying!things!and!some!things!are!going!to!be!wrong!and!some!are!going!to!be!right!
but!it!was!about!not!being!scared.”!!

After!James!manages!to!get!his!feelings!out!into!the!world,!he’s!further!prompted!to!
get!his!act!together!the!next!day,!when!he!shows!up!to!a!job!interview!at!New!York!
Magazine!with!Ben!(Ron!Livingston)!while!clearly!hung!over!and!unprepared.!Try!as!
he!might,!he!can’t!talk!his!way!into!the!job,!and!the!wakeRup!call!Ben!provides!leads!
James!to!take!a!more!active!role!in!caring!for!his!mother.!As!James!begins!to!face!his!

looks!like.!You!know,!people!are!animals.!There!are!certain!times!in!our!lives!where!
it!becomes!really!clear!that!we're!just!dressed!up!animals.!Childbirth!is!one,!dying!is!
another.!It's!wonderful!to!be!able!to!have!that!animal!experience!and!attachment!to!
your!son!who!you!love!and!who!is!caring!for!you,!but!all!you!can!focus!on!is!your!
raging!fever!and!dehydration!and!you!just!keep!living!moment!to!moment.”!

The!emotional!scene,!a!crucial!late!turning!point!in!the!film,!was!inspired!
directly!by!an!experience!Mond!had.!“The!scene!where!James!has!no!one!there!to!
help!him!with!Gail!that!evening,!so!all!he!can!do!is!give!her!Tylenol!and!a!wet!towel!–!
that!was!a!real!experience!I!had!with!my!mom.!It!was!a!scary!experience,!having!so!
few!tools!to!bring!her!fever!down.!No!one!was!coming!till!the!morning.!It!was!one!of!
the!scariest!things!I!have!ever!experienced,!but!the!following!day!my!sister!(who!
was!also!extremely!supportive!throughout!my!mother’s!illness)!told!me!that!I!would!
appreciate!that!night!I!shared!with!her!down!the!road,!as!a!beautiful!experience.!At!
the!time!I!couldn't!really!understand!that,!but!now!I!do!think!it's!one!of!the!most!
beautiful!experiences!of!my!life.!In!making!this!film,!I!was!able!to!explore!things!that!
made!me!really!angry,!and!I!worked!through!them!to!realize!how!lucky!I!was.”!!

The!Visual!Style!of!James*White*
!
In!addition!to!all!of!the!narrative!tensions!running!throughout!the!film,!James!
White!is!also!marked!by!a!highly!tense!visual!style.!For!a!significant!running!time!of!
the!film,!the!camera!finds!itself!consistently!framing!the!scenes!in!a!simple!closeRup!
of!James’s!face,!which!is!framed!dead!center!in!the!composition.!This!technique!
abates!at!times!–!such!as!when!James!travels!to!Mexico!–!to!reflect!James!being!able!
to!“breathe,”!but!for!much!of!his!time!in!New!York!the!camerawork!is!constructed!to!
convey!James’s!sense!of!claustrophobia.!Director!of!Photography!Matyas!Erdely!
explained!the!disparity!between!the!Mexico!sequence!and!the!rest!of!the!film!as!
such:!“The!Mexico!sequence!was!the!valve!that!lets!air!into!the!story.!James!needs!to!
get!away!from!his!situation!and!that!allows!the!film!to!get!away!R!the!whole!mood!
seems!to!change.!Because!of!that!we!decided!to!find!a!visual!approach!in!contrast!
with!all!the!New!York!scenes,!but!which!still!speaks!the!same!language!of!the!film.!
So!we!went!extremely!wide!in!Mexico!but!kept!the!symmetry!and!central!framing.”!!

As!with!so!much!of!James’s!character,!Mond!sees!the!visual!style!as!being!
distinctly!due!to!the!influence!of!the!New!York!environment!as!well.!“The!visual!
language!of!the!film!goes!back!to!New!York.!I!think!there's!a!sense!of!survival!to!New!
York,!and!anxiety!and!claustrophobia.!I!think,!on!its!own,!being!young!in!New!York!
can!feel!that!way,!but!also!being!lost!and!going!through!tragedy!can!feel!that!way.!
Matyas!and!I!discussed!for!a!month!how!to!construct!the!visual!language.!I!had!done!
an!experimental!short!before!where!I!was!really!obsessed!with!the!idea!of!being!
close.!It's!that!feeling!that!you!can!never!get!away!from!yourself,!you!can!never!
breathe,!you're!stuck,!you!have!to!deal!with!this.!The!whole!movie!is!subjective,!and!
that's!the!closest!I!could!get!to!replicating!how!James!feels.”!!

Josh Mond is a writer, director, producer, and co-founder of Borderline Films. Mond’s
breakthrough directorial debut, JAMES WHITE, which stars Christopher Abbott, Cynthia
Nixon and Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi, premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival to
rave reviews and took home the Sundance Next Audience Award. JAMES WHITE was
acquired for a fall theatrical release by The Film Arcade. Mond also produced the
critically acclaimed film, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, which premiered in the
US Dramatic Competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The film went on to
screen as part of Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival and was picked up by
Fox Searchlight. Mond was named one of Variety’s “Ten Producers to Watch” in 2011.
Josh Mond produced AFTERSHCOOL, directed by fellow Borderline member, Antonio
Campos, for which he was nominated for a 2009 Independent Spirit Award for Best First
Feature. AFTRSCHOOL premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and has gone on to
screen at many festivals around the world including New York Film Festival, Berlin,
London Film Festival, SXSW, Pusan Film Festival and AFI. The film was nominated for
two Gotham Awards and was released theatrically by IFC in October 2009. Josh also
produced Campos’ second feature, SIMON KILLER, as well as TWO GATES OF
SLEEP, both staring Brady Corbet. TWO GATES OF SLEEP premiered at 2010
Director’s Fortnight in Cannes.
Mond produced the short “Mary Last Seen,” which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film
Festival and had its European premiere at 2010 Director’s Fortnight in Cannes, where it
won the SFR Short Film Prize. Other short films include “The Last 15,” which in
competition at 2007 Cannes Film Festival and Official Selection 2007 New
Directors/New Films. Mond has also produced and directed several music videos and
commercials, including the acclaimed music video for Mayday Parade’s “Kids in Love,”
which was featured at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival and was named by MTV as one of
the top videos of the year. In 2006 Josh won a commendation award at NYU’s 1st Run
Film Festival for Achievement in Music Video.
Josh Mond is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Department of Film &
Television. Along with Sean Durkin, Mond is currently executive producing Antonio
Campos’ third feature as director, CHRISTINE, which recently wrapped shooting and
