LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello Alumni,
Dear Alumni and Friends,
th
Santa Barbara High School’s 140 school
year has just begun with a flurry of activities for incoming Freshmen and returning Dons. Talk in the
hallways is about classes, where to meet for lunch,
the game on Friday night and the after-game dance—
some things don’t ever change! Please feel free to
visit campus any time. We are in the Olive and Gold
Alumni Room in the Main Hall Fridays 11-1, and our
wonderful students will happily give you a tour.
We send a happy hello to all of you once again from Santa
Barbara High School! What a lucky group of people we are
to have such an interested and engaged alumni association
that demonstrates year after year that Santa Barbara High
School matters. On behalf of the current students, staff, and
parents I would simply say, “we appreciate you!”
Your alumni association worked right up until
the end of school when we sponsored a BBQ in
Peabody Stadium for seniors after graduation
practice. We hope this will become a traditional way
to welcome our newest alumni into the fold. In June,
the traditional walk down the hill and graduation were
lovely. At the beginning of the ceremony our
Principal, John Becchio, invited all SBHS alumni to
stand. It was moving to see how many generations of
Dons were present to celebrate the next generation of
alumni Dons walk down the hill to commencement.
This school year began with about 100 extra students
showing up that we did not expect would be here. Our
enrollment is at about 2250 students. Another interesting
fact to share with all of you is that 45% of our staff are
either in their first or second year at SBHS. In fact, 15% of
our staff is in their first year at SBHS. We certainly
congratulate those teachers who have finished their career
and recently went into that wonderful place called
“retirement.” Their service to SBHS was exceptional. Now
we have the excitement of having a new, and relatively
large, group of new teachers who are learning what it means
to be a Don. That is exciting for us and for them.
We are a school with much history and
tradition. This year marks the centennial of The Forge
and of the SBHS PTA. The Forge has continued as a
print newspaper for students since its first edition
October 14, 1914. We hope you will join us as we
celebrate this milestone and invite all past Forge
Editors and Staff members back to reminisce and
share their experiences. Many of our Forge staffers
got their start in the field of journalism and writing at
SBHS. We can even boast a Pulitzer Prize winner,
Leon Litwack ’47 who is a past Forge Editor and who
th
will be joining us! Please join us too on October 17
th
and 18 .
Please know that we are here 180 days during the year, and
then some. We welcome you any time to come back to your
alma mater and say hello and tell us one of your high school
stories. Please take the time to attend one of our athletic
events, a music concert, or play production, volunteer at a
dance, or be a guest speaker in a classroom. Your presence
is important to us because we, as do you, very much believe
that “Once a Don, Always a Don.”
Congratulations to our 35 scholarship
recipients. We wish them well as they journey into
college. We are extremely grateful for two very
generous bequests this year and we hope we will be
able to grant more scholarships in the near future. Our
students are remarkable young adults.
Again, thank so much for continuing to stay in touch with
what is happening at SBHS and for supporting the programs
and people that make SBHS great.
On a personal note, Bruce Belfiore, my
husband, and I are extremely proud to share with you
that our son, William Belfiore, Class of 2015 and a
third generation Don is this year’s ASB President.
Olive and Gold flow through our household!
Go Dons!
Gloria Cavallero ’72, SBHSAA President
Your Principal,
John Becchio

PRESENTING THE 2014 SBHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Each year the Scholarship Committee interviews every applicant—this year there were 91 interviews. The applicants are rated on their
goals and achievements; their academic preparation to achieve those goals; non-weighted GPA; their service to SBHS and the community;
financial need; and an essay on three topics. We award The Olive and Gold Award certificate to the student who received the highest overall
score. This year that award certificate was awarded to Sandy Campbell.
These 35 students embody the qualities which we Dons honor. Many of our recipients are students who have excelled throughout their
academic careers, while others have “upped their game” and demonstrated their ability to set and reach higher goals. Some have been faced
with life changing events and/or learning differences, but they have met those challenges and have proven that they are ready to achieve their
goals. Over half are the first in their family to go to college and, as a group, these 35 students have spent over 12,500 hours volunteering in
our community!

CONTINUOUS SERVICE
The PTA Legacy Award for a “century of continuous

in the state with the distinction of 100 years of longevity.

some of the programs PTA offers are free healthy snacks
on standardized test days, parent education forums
throughout the school year, fulfillment of teacher “wish
lists”, sponsorship of the National PTA ”Reflections” Art
Program, collection of caps and gowns for needy graduates
and a safe After Prom Party and senior activities. Our

PEARL CHASE HANGS IN THE LIBRARY
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY GENEALOGICAL
SOCIETY AND THE FORGE
Our SBHS library is also an art gallery. Not only
is the former Earthling Bookstore Author's Mural by
Barnaby Conrad in residence, but we now have a lovely
portrait of Pearl Chase `04 watching over our studying
students. This is quite appropriate as she was not only a
Don but also a faculty member at SBHS.
We are embarking on a long-term scanning project with the
assistance of the volunteers at the Sahyun Genealogical
Library in Santa Barbara. After the project is completed, both
the Alumni Association and the SBCGS will have a complete
digital archive of The Forge and it will be searchable. The
early Forges are especially rich in local Santa Barbara news as
well as California school news in general. For quite a few
years of the early years, The Forge had a “college editor” who
reported on alumni doings so this will be a wonderful resource
for local genealogical research.
Last Fall, the Pearl Chase Society honored their
namesake with a 100th Birthday Bash at which Hannah
Jaffe ‘14, presented a portrait of Pearl Chase to the Society.
Hannah was a student in the SBHS Visual Arts and Design
Academy (VADA) at the time. The portrait is lovely and
the Alumni Association was thrilled to receive it from the
Pearl Chase Society for our students to enjoy.
Of special interest, to many of you with deep Hispanic roots
in Santa Barbara, Alex Grzywacki ([email protected]) has
an in-depth genealogy project on the soldiers who served in the
American Civil War in the Santa Barbara Company C of the
First Battalion of the Native California Cavalry formed in 1864
by Antonio María de la Guerra in support of the Union. Mr.
Grzywacki would be pleased to share his information on your
ancestors and to get you started on a genealogical treasure hunt
of your own. Please contact him directly at his email address.
Reminder: The Forge always welcomes
donations to continue their work for SBHS.
We are still offering electronic access to the newsletter.
Look at http://sbhs.tierranet.com to see if that mode
works for you.
Contact us at [email protected] if you want
us to take you off our regular mailing list. We will save
money, and you will receive the letter faster via email.
The Sahyun Genealogical Library is located at 316 Castillo
Street and is a tremendous community resource. They already
have a very fine collection of Olive and Gold Yearbooks which
we are doing our best to complete for them. Your Alumni
Association is thrilled to be participating in this long-term and
very important archival project.

MINI-REUNIONS AT GIRLS’ BASKETBALL FINALS
IN SACRAMENTO
2014 CLASS REUNIONS
The following classes have planned reunions as of
press time.
Alumni from all corners of California gathered to
cheer on the 2013-2014 Girls Basketball team as they vied
for Division 3 CIF State Finals against Modesto Christian
School last spring at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.
The girls’ team advanced to the finals after winning
Channel League and the CIF Southern Section. This is the
first Southern Section Title and State Final for Girls’
Basketball since Title IX was adopted in 1972. Despite the
valiant effort and the very spirited multi-generational
cheering section, our Lady Dons lost 64-55. Amber
Melgoza, Class of ’16, tied the division record with 30
points in a state title game. Spirited and boisterous alumni,
student and faculty support, bolstered by waving bright
gold rally towels did not go unnoticed! The Los Angeles
Times, covering the game, noted our spirit in a Twitter
feed. Students and alums from all eras, made the trek to
Sacramento during what for students was their Spring
Break. The game served as a mini reunion for alums from
all eras. Among alums present were Lorraine ’52 and Ray

South Pacific during WWII but serves as the entrance to the
WWII Corsair memorial which is dedicated to the memory
of the pilots and air crews of the United States Marine
Corps trained at that station and who gave their lives to
their country, including several other SBHS alumni.

History Teacher, Lawrence Gamble, spotted a box of
freebie books. Nearby was a 1913 Olive and Gold

found a treasure and we are extremely grateful for his keen
eye and donation to our archives. Adriane, class of 2000
and Ian, class of 2009 both graduated from Stanford
University.
Then, PLEASE let us know. Thank you. Use the

Kallman ’43, mother of 3 Dons, Kristopher ’67, Tina ’69
and Carol ’73 passed away in August. She and her
husband were longtime community leaders who co-founded

served on the SB Zoo Auxiliary, the board of directors of
the zoo, Arthritis Foundation and the Mesa Improvement
Association. She planned and worked on her SBHS reunion
committee every 5 years. Ruth’s classmates fondly
remember Ruth as the person who arranged for classmate,
Michito Fukuzawa, to walk down the hill in 2008-- 65
years after their class had made that walk as seniors. Mr.
Fukuzawa finished high school in a Japanese internment
camp and through correspondence with Ruth had shared
that he was sorry he had missed the thrill of walking down
the hill. Ruth righted a piece of the wrong.
