Fall Studio Notes
From Barbara Bartleson:
My summer began with a trip to Chicago for the
international meeting of the Suzuki Association of the
Americas. The "hot topic" was ensemble playing. With
new music and the inspiration of excellent performances
and presentations. 1 am eager to begin a new year.
Ryan Witzig, K. C. Beed. Rachael Click. Elliott
Snyder and Jessica Chute have completed graduation
recitals. Piano students will meet at Haugens for piano
groups lessons. This year we will emphasize performance
skills.
From Nancy Kampmeier:
Most of my students had lessons throughout the
summer. Now we are working with new notebooks to
record assignments and practice. We will put dots on a
chart in the studio to show practice and listening. Our
recital on Sunday, September 29. at Peace United Church
of Christ, will be small groups playing their latest polished
pieces. We will have solo recitals in January and May and
participate in SEMSA activities.
From Marlyn Schroeder:
Before moving to Mantorville two years ago. I
taught Suzuki violin and viola in Blooming Prairie.
Minnesota, for over ten years. My students come from
Hayfield, Austin, Owatonna. Zumbrota and Kasson. We
have monthly group lessons and other activities. Some
students also participate in SEMSA activities. Studio
performances include Christmas at the Hubbell House,
Fiddlers Jamboree at Hayfield and the Fiddlers Jamboree
at the Pony Express in Mantorville. We have performed
as wandering musicians in Swiss costumes at the Swissfest
in Berne. Minnesota. Many students enjoy playing for
their church. We keep in touch through a monthly
newsletter.
From Linda Thompson:
This fall students will be encouraged to listen
every day with a 100% Listening Chart. Studio group
lessons will include reading duets for those with fluent
reading skills. We will rehearse independently for 20
minutes and then perform for each other. Our first recital
is planned for Sunday, November 1.

Students Attend 1st Institute
To encourage our members attend institutes or
summer music programs, a small stipend is available to all
families when they enroll for the first time. Families are
asked to write a short article for "Notes" to tell about their
experience.
From Cayla Schroeder (violin student-age 9):
(written in beautifully colored script!) Thank
you, SEMSA, for giving me a scholarship to the 1996
Suzuki Camp in Steven's Point, Wisconsin. I really
enjoyed it. I am trying to practice for 100 days in a row.
Craig Timmerman is a very good teacher. I learned a lot
in those classes. For example, I learned that playing fast
is fun and playing slow is smart!
From Amalie Frankel (mother of Tommy, piano, age 6,
and Andrew, violin, age 8):
Cur first Suzuki institute was a success. Five
classes each day for six and eight year olds seemed like a
lot but the boys got used to it and enjoyed the five days
very much.
Tommy enjoyed his private lesson and movement
class. He loves singing "Phantom of the Opera,"
complete with gestures. Andrew memorized and proudly
performs the two pieces he learned in his Jazz and
Improvisation class. He was thrilled to play in an
orchestra.
The staff was talented, enthusiastic and diverse.
The Trinity College campus is small and manageable.
The students were predominantly cellists and sounded
great at the final cello concert!
From Brendan Milliner (violin student-age 9):
7/22
This morning I had Fiddling class. I realized all
the other students had previous fiddling experience but I
had not. It felt like this class would be no fun.
7/23
Today in Fiddling I started picking up songs by
ear and I caught up with the rest of the class. It was a lot
of fun.
7/25
Today was the last day of camp. I realized that
Fiddling has become my favorite class!
My camp experience was the most fun I have
ever had with my violin. I hope to go to many Suzuki
camps.
From Kelvin MiJJiner(cello student-age 6):
7/22
Dalcroze was fun. It's about the man. Dalcroze,
and the beat. Move your body to the beat.
7/24
My master class teacher and I created a club
today. It was called the Picture Perfect Posture Club,
PPPC, for short. To be in the club, you had to have
perfect posture, keep your arm up(fully inflated water
wing), a tall back, a good bow hold and feet flat on the
floor. It was fun!
7/25
My classes were fun. We all gave a recital.
Bow, bow, bow. The end.
From Sabrena Laack (piano student-age 9):
.. .In John Reglin's class we played piano in
groups of four and learned about the four parts of rhythm:
beats, pulses, long notes and rests. Mrs. Wang played lots
of games to teach us about musical words, notes names
and counting. I was tired at the end of the day but I
learned a lot and made new friends. Everyone should go
to Institute as often as they can.
From Joshua Laack(violin student, age 11):
.. .My favorite class was a reading class with
Carla Phillips. She had a rule that we were not to practice
the music. She said everything in a way that made us
laugh but we liked her so much that we worked hard for
her.
One night there was a talent show. The funniest
act was the Sawzuki Saw Class where they pretended to
do some of the things we do in a real violin class only
with saws.
I hope I can go again next year.
