“
A Word from Our Leaders
While we’ve had more successes this year than we can share in our calendar, we’ve chosen to highlight some
of the very best with you here. Looking over them, I’d say they all have one thing in common. Each plan, each
event, each partnership, each enhancement … everything we’ve done and will continue to do on our campus
is singularly focused on a successful future for our students and the communities we serve.
— Mary Rittling, DCCC President
“
I can’t think of a better time to be affiliated with DCCC. Every challenge faced by our region is being met
head-on by the leadership, staff and faculty on DCCC’s campus — whether it’s developing relevant and
rewarding programs for students or working collaboratively to ensure economic growth and services
for the region, this College is always future-focused. I couldn’t be prouder of its success.
— Beth Parrott, Chair of DCCC Board of Trustees
“
”
”
When my father, Felix Gee, was working to start an industrial education center in 1963, we could not have
imagined the DCCC of today — its legacy is inextricably connected to the communities it serves. As the College
celebrates its upcoming 50th anniversary, I know it will continue to exceed our expectations ... for today’s
students and the young children who will someday cross its threshold seeking brighter futures.
— M. Elizabeth Gee, President of DCCC Foundation Board of Directors

The agenda was robust and included a series of presentations that made
it obvious to everyone here how important it is that DCCC collaborate with
North Carolina’s other community colleges. We all enjoyed having the
presidents visit DCCC.

With a Visit from
Community College Leaders
In October 2011, DCCC bustled with activity
as it hosted the state’s community college
leadership. The N.C. Association of Community
College Presidents held its fall conference in
DCCC’s Conference Center for two days.
Presidents from North Carolina’s 58
community colleges joined DCCC President
Mary E. Rittling, who had served as the
association’s vice president during the 201112 academic year. Joining the community
college presidents on campus was Scott Ralls,
president of the North Carolina Community
College System, and members of his staff.
Rittling, who is now serving as the association’s
2012–2013 president, provided an update
on the many recent changes that had taken
place at DCCC. Since the presidents’ last visit,
DCCC had opened its new conference center,
Transportation Technology Center, Bookstore,
Student Union space, Advanced Manufacturing
Machining Lab, new Welding Lab and a
Learning Commons. A land gift of 183 acres,
named the Link Campus (across Business 85
from the current Davidson Campus), had also
been given to the DCCC Foundation since it last
hosted the college officials.

With a Record-setting Gift
Last fall, the DCCC Foundation announced that
it had received a gift of more than $7.5 million
from the late Christine Harris of Lexington.
The donation was by far the largest gift to the
College and is one of the largest gifts in North
Carolina community college history.
Harris’ interest in the College began during her
son’s time as a DCCC student. He graduated
with honors in 1975 with an associate in
science degree and then also completed
additional coursework at DCCC before pursuing
a four-year degree.
Harris was grateful to DCCC for providing her
son the opportunity to achieve educational
goals while he struggled with health issues that
required him to stay close to home. The extent
of her interest in DCCC, however, was not known
until her death.
The Harris name has been synonymous with
the telephone industry in Lexington for more
than 100 years. Lexcom Communications
was founded in 1896 as Lexington Telephone
Company by a group of local business leaders
and was one of the city’s oldest independent
companies when it was acquired by
Windstream in 2010. William F. Harris, Christine
Harris’ father-in-law, assumed leadership of the
company in 1905.
The Harris family and the telephone company
have been longtime supporters of DCCC through
scholarship funds and other contributions.

We have redefined our educational philosophy. In the past, teachers would
lecture on topics, then students would attend labs to apply what they
learned. Now, we have taken lecture material and made it mobile, thereby
saving the classroom for more personal instruction.

With Advanced Manufacturing
DCCC has jump-started the careers of many
students enrolled in advanced manufacturing
programs with the use of iPads and some of the
latest equipment available. The new technology
is possible thanks to a $2.67 million grant from
the United States Department of Labor — which
is DCCC’s portion of an $18.83 million grant
awarded in 2011 and shared by a consortium of
10 community colleges in North Carolina.

The new technology helps cut down on class time
and allows students to move through programs
more swiftly — enabling them to return to the
workforce at a faster pace, thereby filling area
advanced manufacturing jobs.
The redesigned curriculum also has students
working in renovated manufacturing labs with the
latest equipment available and includes training
on “soft skills” such as learning to be a valuable
team member; the program is designed to take a
holistic approach.
The grant also focused on sustaining the workforce
by building up one of its high school programs at
the Yadkin Valley Regional Career Academy, where
advanced manufacturing is one area of study. The
joint effort will sustain a viable workforce for this
booming industry.

Mary jump-started her future with a 2-year degree from DCCC. She transferred those credits toward a
bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Winston-Salem State University. Mary says she may even pursue a
higher degree in physical therapy sometime in the future.
“
I saw so many doors of opportunity, but I realized that having a degree was
the key to unlocking them. DCCC provided that key to me.
”
Mary will tell you if she can do it, so can you.
Ryann jump-started his future with a great job after just one year in the heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) program at DCCC. After studying business at another college, Ryann wanted a quickturnaround career where he could begin making a good living.
“
It was clear to us that Ryann had a solid technical foundation for us to build upon.
The DCCC program has certainly prepared Ryann well for the HVAC industry.
”
— Ryann’s manager at Johnson Controls in Greensboro

Asia jump-started her future with an associate of arts degree at DCCC. The 2010 graduate of Davie County
High School plans to transfer her credits to UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem and continue preparing
for a professional acting and singing career.
“
I really like that I can take all my classes on the Davie Campus in
Mocksville. I feel like I’m part of the big DCCC family. I would definitely
recommend the College to others. It’s great!

With New Communications
Strategies
DCCC adopted a new strategic brand identity in
early spring 2012.
The DCCC brand committee began its work in
August 2011 comprised of a cross-section of the
College’s internal audiences, including staff, faculty,
current students, alumni and trustees. After a great
deal of research and surveying under the tutelage
of an outside agency, the committee unveiled a
new brand look and feel for marketing efforts. More
than 550 stakeholders weighed in on the process.
Included in the portfolio of changes was a move
toward identifying and highlighting student photos
and success stories, which serve as mirrors
for prospective students. A new tagline – Our
Dedication, Your Journey – embodies the defining
attributes uncovered by the committee, and it was
adopted for use in April 2012.
The entire effort has culminated in a marketing
and communications strategy that identifies
and defines DCCC’s strengths, including a strong
student focus, a dedicated and caring faculty and
staff, and a breadth of programs that allow for
options in careers and majors.
“
It is important that
our marketing efforts
really reach our target
audiences. We want to
communicate with our
students and prospective
students in ways that
make sense to them.

Inspiration
DCCC’s new zoo and aquarium science program
hosted Emmy-winning wildlife biologist and
conservationist Jeff Corwin last spring. “Life on
earth is under a serious threat,” Corwin told a
capacity crowd in the DCCC Conference Center.
“By the middle of this century, more than one
million species could vanish forever.”
The internationally known television personality,
naturalist, conservationist, author and exotic
animal expert gave a private lecture to DCCC’s
zoo and aquarium science students prior to his
public address.
Focusing on species extinction and the need
for conservation and preservation of the
natural world, Corwin said the five elements
creating a “perfect extinction storm” are the
loss of habitats, pollution, the unsustainable
exploitation of species, climate change and
human population growth.
Corwin was introduced to tropical rain forests
in 1984 while on an expedition to Belize. The
experience fueled his interest in the study and
conservation of these ecological marvels and in
1993 he addressed the General Assembly of the
United Nations regarding the need to conserve
rain forests.
“We will lose three species during our
conversation tonight,” Corwin said. “We lose
something every 20 minutes on our planet.”
When a species is lost, it could mean that crucial
ways to fight and possibly cure human diseases
are also lost.

With an ECU Dental Clinic
In June 2012, DCCC had plenty to smile about,
thanks to plans announcing an East Carolina
University community service learning center
coming to the campus. The center will bring
dental care to low-income, underserved citizens
and will provide educational opportunities to
ECU’s dental students.
The $3 million, 8,000-square-foot facility — with
building construction planned for spring 2013
— will serve fourth-year dental students and
dental residents from ECU. There, ECU students
will have the opportunity to hone their patientcare techniques and learn the ins-and-outs of
operating a community practice under the eyes
of experienced faculty members.
The center is set to have 16 dental chairs
and will employ a variety of faculty and staff
positions, as well as four to five students who
will be at the center for nine-week rotations.
Once open, the center will provide a variety
of services, including general, preventive
and emergency dental care and will include
services such as crowns, root canals
and bridges.
The center is modeled for a community setting
— providing students and dental residents
an opportunity to practice in a real-world
atmosphere. The center at DCCC is one of up to
10 centers that ECU plans to build across
the state.

With an Award-Winning
President
The North Carolina Community College system
named Mary Rittling the 2012 President of
the Year in April 2012. The State Board of
Community Colleges established the award
in 2001 to encourage, identify, and reward
outstanding leadership and commitment to the
community college’s mission. The Wells Fargo
Foundation sponsors the award.
Rittling was honored at the annual “Great Within
the 58” Excellence Event for community colleges
on April 19 at the Raleigh Convention Center.
The award also provided the DCCC Foundation
with a cash prize of $2,000.
In her eight-and-a-half years as DCCC’s president,
Rittling has overseen major campus expansions
on both the Davidson and Davie campuses and
established new learning centers in Lexington,
Thomasville and Advance. In addition, she has
fostered and strengthened local, state, regional
and national relationships that benefit DCCC and
this community over and over.
Under her guidance, DCCC was noted for its
work as one of three N.C. community colleges
chosen for the national “Achieving the Dream”
initiative. Collaborating with 130 other colleges
across the U.S., DCCC is sharing data, research
and strategies to increase student success, close
achievement gaps and boost completion rates.

With Summer Camps
After experimenting with soda-propelled rocket
cars, testing LEGO robots and concocting
glowing tonic water, students and staff felt that
the first-ever “Big Brain Camp,” held in June
2012, was a smashing success.
The camp, held over the summer for first-,
second- and third-graders took part in fun and
interactive science, technology, engineering and
math (STEM) activities, including “Sparks in the
Dark,” “Bubbling Lava Lamp,” “Glowing Tonic
Water” and more.
“I was delighted to see such a positive reaction
from the children as they learned through
hands-on STEM activities,” said Andrea Packer,
Big Brain Camp teacher. “It was just as much
a learning experience for us as teachers and
volunteers as it was for the children. I loved
every minute of the experience.”
Not only was the camp a fun event for the
students, it was also an excellent learning
experience. Brenda Phillips, a Davidson County
middle school teacher and DCCC alumna, said
the camp was meant to be an entertaining and
engaging way for students to learn.
“As the children explored each activity, it was
amazing to watch them scaffold from their prior
knowledge to the new level of achievement they
had acquired by the end of the camp,”
Phillips said.

With a Student Success
Center
The B.E. Mendenhall Building on the main DCCC
campus looks a little different on the inside
these days — namely, the building went through
major renovations recently to help give students
an edge when they arrive on campus for the
first time. DCCC calls the new space the Student
Success Center.
The center is a one-stop shop that takes care of
many students’ needs, incorporating admissions,
financial aid, advising, student records,
counseling and career services. The space is
meant to help students become more successful
during their academic pursuits at DCCC.
When a student now comes in, they have direct
access to enrollment counselors, financial aid,
advising, everything.
“We wanted to make a connection with students
when they first arrive — when they’re coming to
college for the first time,” said Kim Sepich, vice
president of student affairs. “The new center
comprehensively addresses student needs in
one spot. It reduces the runaround and really
integrates the services.”
The renovated space, which previously housed
classrooms, is now an open space that includes
a centralized desk staffed with enrollment
counselors, as well as a presentation space
where students are able to perform group work
and more.
