International Friendship Gardens Celebrates 80th Anniversary by William Halliar “The earth laughs in flowers.” So said poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, and who could deny the joy a beautiful garden brings to a soul open to wonder? Michigan City’s International Friendship Gardens is, indeed, a wonder, and a gift to the people of Michigan City, the state and the world, dedicated as a celebration of peace through natural beauty and the arts. The butterfly garden remains a popular attraction at International Friendship Gardens. THE May 21, 2015 The gardens began with a dream 80 years ago, and now, because of talented and dedicated volunteers who’ve donated heart and soul, sweat and treasure, it is as beautiful and fresh as ever. This year, the gardens has a new board of directors, all of whom are excited about the possibilities of the next 80 years. As they frame their plans, they envision their work as a legacy, and a gift, to future generations. The story of the gardens begins in 1933 at Chicago’s World’s Fair. “A Century of Progress,” it was called, and it celebrated 100 years of history in the “City of Big Shoulders.” Three brothers, Virgil, Joe and Clarence Stauffer, owners of a nursery in Hammond, Ind., were commissioned to build what was called “An Old Clarence Stauffer, one of three Mill Garden” for the fair brothers who helped create the but, ever dreamers, they gardens, founded the International Friendship Gardens Music Festi- expanded the concept and vals Inc. in 1946. They met the Stauffers and were inspired by their vision of a permanent garden after the fair, one dedicated to peace and friendship. Embracing the brothers’ dream, the Warrens invited them to Michigan City and leased to them a portion of their land holdings along Trail Creek for 99 years for the sum of $1 a year so the brothers could build their dream. Page 3 THE Page 4 May 21, 2015 Botanical Beauty Continued from Page 3 The Stauffer brothers were an unusual and talented family that grew up on an Indiana farm. Virgil was an opera singer, Joe an engineer and Clarence a banker, developer and inventor. The land they received to build their garden had a storied history. It was here the Potawatomi Indians fished, hunted and danced to the rhythm of their hide drums. Here also, Father Pierre Marquette blessed a spring that still exists in the gardens, while Chicago’s first resident, Jean Baptiste Du Sable, once called the land his home. royal gardener. The King of Persia sent plants for the first rose garden. Many other governments lent support with seeds, plants and statuary. While the world struggled to throw off a global depression and Europe was enveloped in war, this small piece of land celebrated peace among nations. Its creation and mission struck a chord that garnered worldwide support. It is no wonder so many dignitaries from around the world have visited it over the years, most recently Paulina Kapuscinska, consulate general of the Republic of Poland in 2013. Clarence Stauffer founded the International Friendship Gardens Music Festivals Inc. in 1946. At the time, he did not apply for government grants because he feared external influence on his enterprise. Instead, he and his brothers sponsored the gardens themselves, selling their own property, if necessary, to fund the gardens. Richard and Jeanne Houck have carried on the legacy of the gardens established by the Stauffer brothers. One of the hiking trails in the gardens. The gardens officially opened in the spring of 1935. Amid manicured lawns and flowing streams could be found gardens featuring nationalistic themes, including statuary, bells and flora reminiscent of many countries of the world. British, American, Persian and Polish gardens were the first to open, followed by German, Swedish, Norwegian, Italian and many others. The brothers, each contributing his own unique talent, fashioned the gardens out of rough forest, field and swamp. They recruited many volunteers and gained the support of various heads of state from around the world to bring a sampling of the world’s beauty to one small 105-acre plot in Northwest Indiana. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands donated 200,000 tulip bulbs to the garden. King George V of England donated plants and a The land continued to grow and prosper over the years. The Stauffer brothers, who gave so much of their spirit to bring the gardens into being, died, Clarence being the last in 1986 at the age of 100. They passed their love of the gardens onto Dr. Richard Houck and his wife, Imogene (Jeanne), who created a board of directors to help oversee the operation. In 1995, the gardens became a public, nonprofit organization. Jeanne Houck retired from the board for health reasons, but it continued to plan, and the gardens flourished under the direction of Barry Criswell, then the late Tammy Steinhagen. Today, Richard Houck remains board president, while first vice president John Leinweber has taken over fundraising and second vice president Oleif Olsaker handles the grounds. THE May 21, 2015 Eagle Scout Joe Gondeck wears a war bonnet during a visit to the gardens. Page 5 Young dancers are among the highlights of the annual Polish Festival at the gardens. Native American heritage is celebrated in one corner of the gardens and includes a wigwam, garden and drum circle. Here, students can watch demonstrations of primitive cooking and sample Native American dishes while hearing stories of life in the region when it was home to many Indian tribes. Another popular education program is the Maple Sugar Camp held each March. The sugar maples in the garden are tapped, and students sample fresh maple syrup while learning the process to produce it. The Polish Festival in the fall draws huge crowds eager to sample its culture and cuisine. Over the years, hundreds of weddings — some small and intimate, some with hundreds of guests — have taken place in the gardens. A wedding coor- The gardens is host to the Maple Sugar Camp each March. dinator is supplied to make sure everything turns out according to plans. Today, the gardens continues its mission to “enrich the community through programs that promote environmental stewardship and appreciation of the arts.” The members are proud of their achievements over the years and welcome all to not just the gardens, but also the 50 acres of wooded trails that wind through vistas of amazing beauty. From the beginning, the gardens were dedicated to not only botanical beauty, preservation and education, but also to support the arts, which explains why it’s become a venue for musical and theatrical performances. It is the plan of the present board to Continued on Page 6 THE Page 6 May 21, 2015 Botanical Beauty Continued from Page 5 increase these performances and add to opportunities for educational experiences. Each year, for example, the gardens hosts the Lyric Opera of Chicago concert that offers a preview of the coming season. Shakespearean performances also are part of the annual tradition at the gardens. Fifty acres of wooded trails exist on the gardens. Lyric Opera of Chicago performers entertain audiences each year with a preview of the upcoming season. Jude Rakowski has been a dedicated volunteer at the gardens over the years. On July 11, the gardens will present Johnzo West & the Wayward Souls in concert. West was featured in the Miley Cyrus hit single “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.” Tickets are available at www.friendshipgardens.org For Leinweber, an energetic entrepreneur from Chicago, he has only recently fallen under the spell of the gardens’ beauty. He works with a board of directors filled with ideas for revitalizing the garden. The plan is to bring it back to its former glory and beyond. Already, under his leadership, the membership of the gardens has doubled. With renewed vitality, the new board is excited about the direction it is taking. The hope is to build a new educational building — the project is in the planning stages — and pave some of the walking paths to make them more accessible to bicyclists. Leinweber stresses the goal is to make the historic gardens a destination on Lake Michigan’s southern shore, not only for the botanic beauty, but also as a grand entertainment venue. International Friendship Gardens, 2055 U.S. 12, Michigan City, is open Mother’s Day through October, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. Members have access to the grounds year-round from dawn to dusk. When Helen died suddenly in 1925 at 42, Bartlett made a memorial gift of 25 paintings the couple privately accumulated, including works One of the earliest paintings in the Joseph Winterbotham collection is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s “Equestrienne: At the Circus Fernando” (1888). Among the first of those forward-looking individuals was Joseph Winterbotham, whose family made its original fortune here in Michigan City as manufacturers of barrels. In 1921, Winterbotham made the then-huge gift of $50,000 to the Art Institute “for the purchase of works of art painted by European artists of foreign subjects.” The terms of his gift delegated the selection of works to the Art Institute’s trustees Claude Monet’s “The River” (1868), a gift from Mrs. Potter Palmer, was considered revolutionary and badly painted when first displayed in Paris. THE May 21, 2015 Page 9 by Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, Modigliani and most importantly Seurat’s monumental “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte.” In 1926, the Art Institute displayed the entire Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection in one gallery, a practice now to be repeated with the Edlis-Neeson gift of 20th century American art. The deaths of prominent art collectors Mrs. Potter Palmer (in 1922) and Mrs. Lewis L. Coburn (in 1932) brought the Art Institute many of its French Impressionist paintings, which had been spurned by official Parisian art circles, but gained wide popularity in midwestern America, among everyday Chicagoans. Art Institute president Leigh Block and his wife Mary donated this important painting, “Sylvette” (1954), by Pablo Picasso. Edgar Degas’ painting “Woman at Her Toilette” (1905) is one of 227 paintings given to Art of Institute of Chicago by Martin A. Ryerson. By far the greatest gift came from Martin Antoine Ryerson, the Harvard-educated lawyer, real-estate tycoon, Art Institute trustee and collector “with an infallible eye.” He’d managed to acquire the Demidoff collection, including Rembrandt’s “Young Woman at a Half-Open Door,” earlier presented to the Art Institute. At his death in 1933, the Art Institute received his collection of 227 paintings, ranging from Dutch old masters to Renoir, Monet and Degas, plus items of Oriental and decorative arts. More than one art historian has remarked upon the impact of Chicago-area collectors and their personal tastes, on the character of Art Institute of Chicago holdings. From the very beginnings until the present day, they have shown a great interest in modernist acquisitions. Leigh B. Block, the strong-willed Inland Steel executive and the Art Institute board president (from 1970 to 1975), collected art in partnership with his wife, Mary. In addition to establishing the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University, they gave the Art Institute masterpieces by Picasso and other modern painters. Another industrialist whose collecting passions left their mark on Chicago was Edwin A. Bergman, the South Sider who headed U.S. Reduction Co. (later sold to American Can) in Lansing, Ill. Bergman and his wife, Lindy, both University of Chicago graduates, “liked art with critters in it,” according to a friend. Their tastes gravitated toward SurreContinued on Page 10 “Patience” (1943), an eccentric composition by Balthasar Balthus, is included in the Winterbotham collection. They accumulated almost 100 of his box constructions and other assemblages — the largest collection in the world. Bergman was one of the founders of The Museum of Contemporary Art and served as its president (1974-1976.) In 1983, the Edwin and Lindy Bergman Joseph Cornell Gallery was established at the Art Institute of Chicago and today is displayed in the new modern wing. Amedeo Modigliani’s portrait of “Jacques Lipchitz And His Wife” (1916) was given to the Art Institute of Chicago by Frederic Clay Bartlett in memory of his wife. “Woman Before an Aquarium” (1921), painted by Henri Matisse, is one of the paintings in the Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection. Former Long Beach resident Dennis Kelley came from Indianapolis to attend the meeting, sent by the Indiana Historical Society to decide whether a need and desire exist for a historical society here. “The Indiana Historical Society is very interested in setting up a historical society in Long Beach,” Kelley said. “There are so many little townships that hold such historical significance in the state of Indiana, and we want so much to preserve as many of them as possible, before they are lost forever.” The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday, July 27, when the group will hold a formal town meeting to inform residents of their intentions and general plans. Tamara Hemmerlein, director of Local History Services of the Indiana Historical Society, Indianapolis, will speak. In the meantime, the group has several ideas in motion. As an informational kickoff, the group will march in the Long Beach July 4th parade and hand out brochures. Many members also have started collecting items for the museum. On such member is Debbie Steele-Semla, who began collecting items purely out of interest after stumbling upon them. Now, she holds quite a nice collection she intends on donating to the museum once it is established. Her collection includes items such as an original metal Long Beach Reality sign, an original blueprint of the Long Beach community and a photo album filled with newspaper clippings and photos of are buildings. Visit Long Beach Historical Society on facebook for more information or the town’s website at http:// longbeachin.org/ Photos and newspaper clippings saved for the Long Beach Historical Society and Museum. Each train heads along a different route through a beautiful wooded landscape, the longest being 2 1/2 miles. The museum also is a showcase for a working steam-powered sawmill with a 60inch blade, La Porte’s first electric generator and a blacksmith shop where iron is turned into handcrafted works of art. That naturally got me thinking. What a chore it must have been to cook for a large family with those small ovens. They were nothing like my 48” range with two ovens, a griddle and six burners. I couldn’t imagine cooking on anything else. My mind wandered back to what it was like growing up in a large Sicilian family with five boys and one girl. Life with such a large family was interesting, to say the least. In 1955, the kids ranged from ages 15 to 5. The 5, of course, was yours truly. My parents saved the best for last. Our family consisted of my father, Joe, mother, Mary, older brothers, Bob, Joe, Mike and David, one sister, Mary Ann, and, of course, the cutest of the bunch, me. We all sat down together for dinner each night and on weekends went to visit relatives. Growing up in a large family back in the 1950s was fun. I learned how to stick up for myself, be self-sufficient and develop social skills, something lacking with all of today’s unsocial media. I played outside all day long on weekends and in the summer, or until the street lights came on during the school year, if my homework was finished. Mom spent her days doing the typical 1950s mom things: laundry, cleaning house, cooking, baking fresh homemade bread (more on the bread in a bit). She didn’t dress like June Cleaver or Donna Reed, but was just as pretty. A 1930s-style kitchen. For a good portion of my time in grade school, my mother was a stay-at-home mom. She did some house cleaning and bookkeeping work on the side, but was almost always home when we were. My father made sure we always had enough to eat. I remember when we had a turkey, beef or pork roast, my mother would take the leftover meat, mix it into the gravy and we had what we thought was a treat: gravy bread the next day with mashed potatoes. She was a master at stretching our food dollars. It was a treat to have chicken pot pies for dinner. They were a whopping 10 cents each. My father worked hard and provided all the things we needed. When my mother or one of us kids would ask my father for something, he would always ask, “Do you want it or do you need it?” My father was my role model back then and throughout my life. Fathers and other family members were role models. They showed how much they cared for you, maybe not so much with words, but with their actions. Everyone’s mom was a master with the needle and thread. Buttons were always coming off, zippers broken and holes made in jeans and shirts. I remember those iron-on patches my mom used to put on the knees of my jeans to cover the holes. I guess I was way ahead of the fashion curve back then: jeans with holes in the legs. No one knew that a few decades later, people would be spending big bucks for new jeans with holes in them. My mother, like almost every other mother in town, made things from scratch. Cookies, bread and my two favorites: tapioca and rice pudding. I remember my sister Mary Ann’s first attempt at making brownies. She grabbed a box of brownie mix, followed the directions (almost) and put them in the oven. She figured if it took 25 to 35 minutes to bake in a 350 degree oven, it would take considerably less time at around 500 degrees. I thought, wow, a snack fresh out of the oven in the middle of the day. I patiently waited at the kitchen table for the entire 10 minutes it took to make those brownies. I had my glass of milk sitting on the table, and I was ready for that chocolatey treat. I watched the stove as if my constant staring would make things bake faster. My sister noticed smoke coming from the oven, so she decided they were done. When she opened the oven door, smoke billowed out. I hadn’t remembered smoke being involved when my mom made brownies. A f t e r the smoke cleared, my sister decided to cut — I mean try to cut — the brownies. The only problem was, Jim LaRocco’s oven. THE May 21, 2015 she would have needed a chain saw to do so. They were so hard and crusty, she could not cut into them. I believe the brownies were used to patch one of the brick streets near our house. It was a long time before my sister attempted to make brownies after that. Oh, before I forget, let’s get to the bread story. My mom, like almost every other mom, made homemade bread. She would always let my brothers, Dave and Mike, help. She used the yeast, let it rise — you know the drill. Little did my mother know that on this day, her sons all added salt to the bread dough. I decided I wanted to help and added salt, too. No one knows exactly how much salt was added to the dough. Needless to say, it failed to rise properly and mom was a little suspicious. She asked if anyone did anything to the dough. We didn’t find out until later that we all added salt. That was the last time she made bread. After that, if I wanted homemade bread, I would have to make the eight or nine-block walk to Grandma LaRocco’s and get some. Grandma LaRocco could not speak English, but like all the other Italian ladies in the neighborhood, she sure could make a mean loaf of bread. I can still smell the bread baking in the oven. When the bread was fresh and hot out of the oven, she would slice it, butter it and place a thin slice of Parmesan cheese on it. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Excuse me while I get a towel and wipe off my keyboard. Everyone has memories of their mother or grandmother’s cooking. I enjoy cooking. For me, it is therapeutic and fun. For mothers back in the day, it was a full-time job. Here is my mom’s recipe for one of our favorite desserts: rice pudding. Rice Pudding: 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup instant rice 3 eggs slightly beaten 1/2 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 1/2 cups of scalded whole milk 3/4 cup of raisins Cinnamon if desired Heat oven to 350 and prepare 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup instant rice. (per directions) Blend eggs, sugar, vanilla, then add rice and raisins. Pour the mixture in a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish and sprinkle with cinnamon. Place casserole dish in a large pan Jim’s rice pudding filled with very hot waright out of the oven. Page 31 ter. Be careful not to put in too much water. The water level should be about 1/2 way up the sides of the casserole dish. Bake 60 to 70 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Pudding can be served warm or cold. My family likes its rice pudding warm and topped with cinnamon-flavored whipped cream. My mother used to make a sauce to put on top. The funny thing is, she never wrote down the amount of the ingredients, just the ingredients. When my brother, Dave, was visiting from Florida, I decided to surprise him and make the rice pudding and sauce my mom used to make. I first had to decipher the “recipe.” I remembered the size of the saucepan she used and basically cooked it from memory. In my brother’s words, “it tastes just like Mom’s.” Here is the sauce recipe, complete with a list of ingredients in the proper amount: 1/2 cup sugar 4 cups whole milk 5 tablespoons of corn starch 1 teaspoon of vanilla 1 teaspoon of butter. Mix all of the ingredients, then heat the mixture on medium heat in a saucepan, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. When it thickens, you can add cinnamon and nutmeg to taste. Pour on top of rice pudding. Until next time, enJim’s rice pudding recipe joy once served. Contact Jim LaRocco at [email protected] Michigan City Dental, P.C. 4212 E. THE May 21, 2015 Page 79 $7,000 Grant to Fund Mighty Acorns Valparaiso University students awarded Dunes Learning Center a $7,000 grant as part of an American literature and experiential philanthropy course. English 396, “Traditions of Giving and Serving in American Life,” introduces students to writings about charity and service, while taking them through a real-world grant-development process. The program is aided by the Learning by Giving Foundation. Founded by Doris Buffett, Warren Buffett’s sister, it teaches effective charitable giving. Grant funds will support Dunes Learning Center’s Mighty Acorns program, which brings sustainability education to underserved, urban communities. Created around the idea of connecting students with nature, Mighty Acorns is a multi-year, handson learning program that engages third- through sixth-graders through education, restoration and exploration activities in natural areas near their schools. The STEM-based curriculum combines classroom and field components to prepare students for academic and career success. The Northwest Indiana Mighty Acorns program served 1,377 Porter County students from 51 Porter County classrooms during the 2014-2015 school year. Mighty Acorns students completed more than 1,250 hours of stewardship work during more than 150 study trips to natural areas in Porter County last year, including Imagination Glen in Portage. The Northwest Indiana Mighty Acorns Partnership is a collaboration between Dunes Learning Center, Shirley Heinze Land Trust and the Chicago Field Museum, serving more than 3,500 students in Indiana’s Lake, Porter and La Porte counties. Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. Home invasion. It’s a frightening thing because you never know what the invaders want. “When you’re so scared that you’d do anything, anything at all, then we’ll tell you what we want.” So say the two men who invade the country home of the AnchorFerrers family in rural western England. But wait--I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me start from the beginning... A very strange wanderer, simply called The Walking Man, finds a wounded dog with a scribbled note attached to his collar that says “help me.” Surmising this is no joke, he calls on Detective Inspector Jack Caffery to investigate. Jack, however, doesn’t want to get involved until Walking Man tells him he will trade some information about the death of Jack’s brother, Ewan, in exchange for his help. Ewan was believed to have been killed many years ago by a pedophile, but his body was never found. Armed with this incentive, and the dog, Jack begins a painstaking search to find out who the dog belongs to before it’s too late for his owners. But how far has the dog traveled? Setting up a 10-mile radius for his hunt, Jack sets out to find the needle in the haystack. Knocking on doors proves to be a waste of time until he comes to the estate of Col. Frink and his wheelchair-bound wife. He discovers their grandson and his fiance were brutally murdered 15 years ago nearby in an area called the Donkey Pitch. It’s not much to go on, but his instincts tell him it’s a start. The English countryside suddenly becomes something dark and sinister, fields and forests are not friendly anymore. There’s something very Hitchcockian going on. Meanwhile, the chapters go back and forth between Jack and the Anchor-Ferrers. Going back a few hours in time, Oliver and Matilda Anchor-Ferrers and their daughter, Lucia, arrive at their big gloomy country estate called The Turrets. Soon after, two men show up flashing police badges. They claim to be investigating the murder of a single woman who lived close by. This brings May 21, 2015 back memories of the brutal murders of the young couple 15 years ago. The young man happened to be someone Lucia dated back then. Then, the phone is dead and their is no cell phone signal at the house, and... Well, suffice it to say, Oliver’s suspicion of the two “policemen” comes to fruition as they tie up the family, putting them in three separate rooms. The psychology of these two men is flawless as they know just what buttons to push and how to elicit fear without actually hurting the family physically, although that doesn’t mean physicality doesn’t eventually happen... And just what is that smell coming from the basement? Oliver Anchor-Ferrers was a scientist in the international arms industry. His Wolf missile system had been sold globally. Could his background have something to do with this nightmare? But why? He’s now retired and not in the business anymore. I like the way Oliver spends his time while tied up, logically trying to figure out what these men really want. His sharp mind might hit on the reason they are being terrorized, but it probably won’t help him do anything about it. It looks like the family’s time is running out. The way Hayder heightens the suspense, taking you step by step until you think things are working out, is absolutely diabolical. Her characters are astoundingly real, some creepy, some sympathetic, some with an agenda that will creep up on you before you realize it. The family is helpless and unable to comprehend why this is happening to them, and Jack is the flawed, but relentless cop who won’t give up. This is a read to raise the hairs on your head! From The New York Times Book Review: “Hayder’s work and characters are worth the unending nightmares they will inspire.” BookPage wrote: “The home invasion novel to end all home invasion novels...Wolf is exceptionally original in premise and nightmarish in its rendering.” Hayder won the Edgar Award for Best Novel for Gone and the 2011 Crime Writers’ Association Dagger in the Library Award for outstanding body of work. Till next time, happy reading!
