Thank you to our staff and parents for volunteering your time
and talents to photograph school events.
From the Principal’s Desk:
A
s a principal, I didn’t think I could
possibly be as proud of our teachers,
staff and students as I was when
Mount Aviat received recognition as a 2014
Blue Ribbon School of Excellence; however,
after receiving the 2016 Innovations in
Catholic Education award by Today’s
Catholic Teacher in March (see page 4 for
more details about the award), again I was
overwhelmed with pride and gratitude. This award helps validate that we
are being successful in our primary mission to educate students in the
message of Christ. Our students not only gain a thorough understanding of
the school’s Salesian heritage, but also they truly get what it means to Live
Jesus and they share that spirit with their peers.
As always, it is not just the achievements that I am grateful for but also
the people. I would like to thank Mrs. Patricia Capaldi for her 20 years
of service to Mount Aviat and her commitment and dedication to our
Preschool program. In addition, I would like to thank Mrs. Pat Seigel, Mrs.
Jennifer Palm and Mrs. Deborah Spych (pictured below) for their years of
leadership to Friends, and we wish their families well as they embark on
their next adventure—high school. We cannot thank our volunteers enough
for their contributions to Mount Aviat.
Have a safe and happy summer, and we look forward to another
wonderful school year in the Fall!
Yours in Christ,
Sister John Elizabeth Callaghan, OSFS

Helping Our Sisters in Need in Ecuador: Rebuilding After Devastating Earthquake
O
n April 16, 2016 at 6:58 p.m., while the Oblate
Sisters were in their chapel in Manta, Ecuador,
a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the area, killing
hundreds, injuring thousands and leaving tens of thousands
homeless. The Sisters described the devastation of those 50
seconds: The candles flew like bullets through the air. You could
not stand upright; the shocks were so strong. But despite all that
we have to be thankful there were no children in the school, that
all the Sisters were together in a safe place and could run outside,
holding each other up and hugging.
Many of their teachers and Oblate Sisters’ families were
affected. To date, they have lost 15 students and there are
many still missing. The disaster can now be measured in lives
lost, the seriously injured and the long suffering. Two Oblate
schools of 1,400 students are completely destroyed. There is
nothing left in Leonie Aviat School in Tarqui, Manta, one
of the most affected areas. The portion of Saint Frances de
Sales School that remains has to be taken down because
of the severely damaged structure. Stella Maris School in
Manta and Saint Mary Magdalene School in San Placido
(Portoviejo) were damaged badly as well but can be repaired.
As the Sisters began cleaning up debris, they found a
statue of Our Lady of Light, situated outside Leonie Aviat
School, intact in a glass case. The protection of Our Lady
has become a tangible support for them. The Sisters are
working on an emergency plan and the cleanup has begun.
They are procuring temporary classrooms to keep students
safe while they focus on a rebuilding plan. For over 100 years,
the Oblate Sisters have been working to educate children
and young people throughout Ecuador and we at Mount
Aviat want them to know how valued they are. Our friends,
benefactors, school community and so many others have
offered their prayers and financial support. The month of
May was filled with activities at Mount Aviat to show our
solidarity: the Service Club sponsored a car wash; the Girls
on the Run ran a bake sale; the Class of 2016 sold plants;
the Friends and
Sisters made and
sold macaroni and
cheese and whiskey
cakes; and the faculty,
staff and student
body held a walka-thon. To date, our
Walk2Rebuild walka-thon has raised
$14,265.00.
The Sisters
continue to send
updates. We are
encouraged by their
strength and desire
to rebuild and we are
committed to helping
them. We invite you
to go to our website, www.oblatesisters.org, for updates,
pictures and ways you can contribute to their rebuilding
efforts. As the weeks go by and the physical and emotional
recovery begins, it will be with the support of people like you
that the Oblate Sisters will be able to show compassion for
their brothers and sisters.

Class of 2016 Leads the Way at 5K
T
he Mount Aviat 5K and Sister Walk celebrated its
6th year running on Sunday, April 24, 2016. Perhaps
it was the beautiful Spring morning, but registration
was the highest to date with over 200 runners coming out
to complete the hilly 3.1-mile course in Manchester Farms
and surrounding areas, which was marked and hand timed by
Fuel 3 Sports. The runners ranged in age from 1 to 79.
This year’s race was no challenge for our top two overall
male and female finishers who happen to be graduating
8th graders. Aedan Locke was the top finisher with a time
of 20:39 and our overall top female finisher was Aubrey
Preske with a time of 24:26. Way to represent the Class of
2016! Our principal, Sister John Elizabeth, must have been
training, because she improved her time by almost 2 minutes
and placed 2nd in her age bracket. Hopefully the school’s
new walking path will help her prepare even better for next
year.
This event would not have been a success without
the support of its sponsors. Thank you to the following
organizations for their contributions: Family Healthcare
of Elkton; McCool Insurance; Dr. Elizabeth Lowe, M.D.;
Formal Affairs; Premier Auto and Tire; DiPietro and
Grace Families; Newark Dental Associates; Financial
Advisor of Delaware Valley; Ray Ianni; CI Contractors; and
ATI Physical Therapy. Thank you to Costco, W.L. Gore,
Bagelmania, Sky Zone, Mrs. Koterwas, Unique Image and
Road ID for donations of food or supplies. Their donations
kept our runners well hydrated during the race and supplied
the goodies afterwards. Four lucky racers were winners of
Gore-Tex running jackets: Kristen Najera, Mary Peck, Jim
LaPointe and Marc Siegel. Dan Griffith won a Family Fun
Pack from Sky Zone Trampoline Park. Finally, thank you
to MAA’s next-door neighbors Moose Lodge of Elkton for
allowing us the use of their parking lot for our finish line
and to the Cecil County Sheriff Department for their police
presence during the race. Save the date for next year’s 5K,
which will be April 30, 2017.

Mount Aviat Academy Wins National
Award
O
n February 24, 2016, Principal Sister John
Elizabeth announced that Mount Aviat Academy
had been chosen as the winner of the Innovations
in Catholic Education Award for 2016 by Today’s Catholic
Teacher! The award annually honors Catholic elementary and
secondary schools that have led the way by implementing
exemplary, innovative programs. Mount Aviat was chosen
as one of only twelve schools in the nation to be recognized
because of the innovative religion curriculum, which teaches
students about Salesian saints and promotes bringing their
spirituality alive. Specifically, religion teachers compiled
biographies of Salesian saints for each grade level with one
Salesian saint assigned to each class. Each class wove their
special saint into their monthly Mass. Seventh- and eighthgrade students completed an in-depth study of their Salesian
saint and eighth graders even sent the student body on a
scavenger hunt for Salesian items and sayings throughout the
school.
The religion curriculum at Mount Aviat encourages
students at all levels to gain a more thorough understanding
of the richness of the school’s Salesian heritage and
encourages ways to live it and share it with others. MAA has
always highlighted the spiritual maxims of Saint Francis de
Sales, especially “Live Jesus.” Faculty and staff are encouraged
to catch students Living Jesus on a daily basis and reward
students with Living Jesus cards so students want to be
“caught” Living Jesus.
Awards were presented at a special recognition
celebration reception in San Diego, CA, on March 30th.
Louis P. DeAngelo, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools for
the Diocese of Wilmington, Sister John Elizabeth Callaghan,
Principal of Mount Aviat Academy, and Sister Susan Louise,
Principal of Holy Cross Academy were in attendance
(pictured above). Mount Aviat also celebrated with friends
and family on May 26th with lots of festivities including
inflatables, pony rides, a DJ, jugglers, and of course, water ice!
Athletic Association Update:
4th and 5th Grade Boys Win All Saints
Tournament
M
ount Aviat’s basketball teams took the court
this Winter with a season full of enthusiasm
and spirit. This year, MAA sponsored 6 teams
that allowed 48 student-athletes from grades 4-8 to play
with their classmates. The 4th and 5th Grade Boys team
combined to have a great season led by Coaches Dan Black,
Monica Trout and Ed Marsilii. The team continued to
develop their individual skills while working together. At
the end of the regular season, they continued their success in
the All Saints Tournament. The team went 4-0 and won the
tournament to cap off a great season. Led by Chris Locke
and Shannon Cicero, the 4th and 5th Grade Girls united
for a strong season. The team continued to develop as they
implemented their half-court offense, energetic defense and
ability to fast break.
The 6th Grade Boys team, coached by Jackie Hartman
and Monica Trout and assisted by Mark Hendron, was able
to build on last year’s success and put together another strong
season. The team played well to ensure they were competitive
in a tough league. Special thanks to Mark Hendron for
his help, as well as Stephen Worden, Larry Trout, Brenda
Hendron, Shray Olszewski and Bill Stegemerten, for their
help with the clock and books. The 7th Grade Boys team
continued its development under the patiently watchful eye
of Coach John Spych, with assistance from Pat Kelsch and JJ
Norman. Playing against strong teams from larger parishes
and schools, the team improved in its half-court offense and
ability to break the press.
The Varsity Girls team combined the talents of our
student-athletes from 6th, 7th and 8th Grades. Coaches
Rich Pierce and Rob Colgan created a positive environment
that encouraged all players to gel into a cohesive team. This
teamwork showed on the court, as the team worked together
and leveraged the talents of all players for a successful
season. The 8th Grade Boys team–most of whom had been
playing together at MAA since 4th Grade–continued to
produce great results against exciting competition. Coached
by Chris Locke and Gina Psenicska, this season was a great
finish to their MAA student-athlete careers. The Varsity
Boys team took third place in the St. Peter’s Varsity Boys
C Tournament. After playing five very tough games, twice
playing two games in one night, the boys took third place
in the tournament. The boys played in the St. Anthony’s
Tournament and took second place. The team also had a very
successful regular season, losing only to one opponent.
Top: The 4th and 5th Grade Boys team and their coaches Monica Trout,
Dan Black and Ed Marsilii celebrate their success at the All Saints Tournament.
Bottom: The 8th Grade Varsity Boys team and coaches Gina Psenicska and
Chris Locke say farewell after five years together on the court.
Overall, the success on the court was made possible by
the willing efforts of our head coaches, assistant coaches,
team managers, parent volunteers and the enthusiasm of
our student-athletes. In April, the Athletic Association was
able to celebrate the performances for both the basketball
and volleyball programs at our annual Sports Banquet, as we
welcomed back MAA Alumnus Sean Locke ’08 to share his
story of how athletics continues to be a part of his life.
The Athletic Association is looking for interested parent
volunteers to join our board to support the athletic interests
of our students. A vibrant sports program is an important
part of the school community and a great way for parents
to get involved. If you are interested, please contact Steve
Dymowski at [email protected].

Celebrating
60 Years
Sr. Mary Vincent Kowalewski entered the Oblate Sisters of Saint Francis de
Sales in 1955. Sister was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware within a
devout Catholic family. Sister professed her Vows on December 9, 1956 and
went on to serve God in the Congregation for many years here in Childs. Sister
believes that her vocation is due solely to prayer and the grace of God. She has
been a source of grace to many souls young and old throughout her religious
life and considers herself blessed to have worked with countless young children
and to have had the opportunity to instill in them the love of God. Thank you,
Sister Mary Vincent, for 60 years of faithful service to your community. Happy
Diamond Jubilee!
