This Parent Guide contains important information and reminders for new and returning camp parents. Each year we carefully review our policies and procedures and update them accordingly based on feedback collected throughout the year from parents, campers and staff, in addition to updated regulations put in place by the American Camp Association and Department of Health. Camp administrators also attend various forms of professional development throughout the year in order to keep up with the highest standards of safety and camp programming. Attached to this guide are procedures for logging on to our password protected online system called CampMinder. Please review these directions so that you can complete all camp forms in a timely manner and also view the hundreds of photographs that we will upload each day of camp. Please review the information in this document and call (516) 621-9257 with any questions that you may have BEFORE the summer begins so we can ensure that everyone is on the same page. We look forward to another FUN & SAFE summer at BSDC! Sincerely, Holly & Heath Director/Ass’t Director 2016 Camp Dates Full Camp Season– Wednesday, June 29– Tuesday, August 23 ***Camp weeks are Wednesday through Tuesday this summer*** Department of Health Camp is inspected twice yearly by the Nassau County Department of Health. We also have a camp physician on retainer that we contact when further medical attention is required. Medical forms must be completed and submitted by June 1. By law, we cannot accept campers on the first day of camp without completed medical forms. Parents will be notified by phone if a camper is injured during the camp day. All camper visits to the nurse are documented in the Nurse’s Log. The Health Center can be reached by calling the main office at (516) 621-9257. Please notify camp via phone or email the evening before or morning of if you know that your child will not be attending camp for any reason. Proper Camp Attire Campers should wear appropriate clothing for the daily physical activity that is part of our program. LABEL ALL CLOTHING THAT IS WORN OR BROUGHT TO CAMP. Please consider when dressing your children in the morning that clothing worn to camp is likely to return home with dirt, paint, food, etc. In other words, DO NOT allow campers to wear expensive clothing that will be an issue if ruined or altered during a camp day. Campers MUST wear sneakers and socks to ALL activities besides swimming. There will be no exceptions to this rule. This is for the SAFETY of the camper. Full day campers must bring two bathing suits and two towels to camp each day. Mini day campers need one bathing suit and one towel. These items are returned home each night. Campers may prefer to wear their first suit to camp, in which case a pair of underwear and shorts (for males) must be packed for the day. Junior Camp: (Entering N, Pre-k or K after Summer): Pool shoes, sunscreen & extra clothes are to be left in assigned classroom Full Day Junior Campers require a mat for a daily rest period Lower/Upper Camp: (Entering 1st grade and older): Pool shoes or flip flops and sunscreen are to be left in assigned classroom All campers will receive a new BSDC shirt for 2016. This shirt is to be worn on Picture Days and whenever campers are leaving our site for a trip. We will inform you when shirts are ready to be picked up at the camp office. Personal Property Please do not allow your child to bring toys, electronics, stuffed animals, jewelry, collector cards, games, etc. There is no need for any of these items to be brought to camp. Beth Sholom Day Camp will not be responsible for any items lost at camp. Food Service ALL FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED BY BSDC. Due to Kosher restrictions and camper allergies, no outside food may be brought into camp. Each day a hot lunch item will be featured and several substitute options will be made available. Campers will also be provided morning and afternoon snacks on a daily basis. Camper allergies and dietary restrictions will be handled directly by our Food Service Director. BSDC is completely nut free! Birthday celebrations involving food must be approved ahead of time by the Food Service Director. Ice water stations are located throughout the camp in order to keep our campers properly hydrated. Campers may carry CLEARLY LABELED water bottles if they wish, but it is not necessary. Transportation Daily transportation of campers to/from camp and on day trips is provided by We Transport, Inc. We Transport provides professionally trained bus drivers in addition to a safety supervisor to oversee arrival and dismissal. We Transport creates bus routes based on efficiency and safety. Most bus routes use mini buses. BSDC provides each bus with a trained bus counselor whose job is to make sure the campers are following all bus rules and are enjoying their ride. The bus ride to/from camp is considered an extension of the camp day. Campers may not go home on any bus other than the one they have been assigned. Parents will be notified via text and email in a timely manner if any traffic delays occur during the morning or afternoon bus runs. Specific information about your child’s bus will be sent via mail in mid-June. For early pickup, whenever possible, please call the camp office at least 1 1/2 hours prior to desired pick up time. Campers will only be released to parents, emergency contacts and authorized grown ups listed on the appropriate forms in CampMinder. Swimming at BSDC All campers will be provided with appropriate swim instruction on a daily basis, weather permitting. Full day campers will swim twice a day. Certified Lifeguards, water safety instructors and group staff will work with small groups of campers to ensure development of aquatic skills throughout the summer.
