Leadership Booklet 2014.indd 1 8/26/2014 8:41:36 AM Together, We’re Getting Things Done Loyal Contributors Have you given to United Way 10 years or more? If so, you are one of United Way of Randolph County’s Loyal Contributors. Perhaps you gave to another United Way before coming to Randolph County. No matter at what level you give, or where, your gifts have made a difference and we want to thank you. If you are a Loyal Contributor, we want to know! Simply check the Loyal Contributor box on your pledge card and include the year that you recall beginning to support United Way. By separate paths we came to Asheboro in 1951 and found a community of friendly, welcoming and giving people. Since then we have tried to repay the generosity shown to us and our children by supporting charitable and community improvement projects which make Asheboro and Randolph County a better place for all of us. We believe that supporting United Way is an ideal way of “giving back”! Bob & Dot Walker Leadership Booklet 2014.indd 2 8/26/2014 8:41:42 AM LETTERS The Board of Directors of the United Way of Randolph County offers its sincere gratitude to everyone who donated their time, talents, and dollars to this year’s campaign. The Board thanks all the businesses that supported the United Way campaign and allowed its employees to volunteer at our community agencies. United Way is proud to partner with a number of local charitable organizations which provide health, education, and youth services. Through your financial support, these dedicated agencies offer a variety of programs that have a direct impact on the lives of our fellow citizens. Economic challenges continue, and it seems the needs always grow faster than our resources. But our area continues to be very generous, with a true compassion for our neighbors. Your continued generosity to these agencies directly effects how well our area’s needs will be met. In addition to the fund raising campaign, throughout the year United Way of Randolph County provides technical assistance to these partner agencies. Volunteers on the Community Investment Council devote many hours to make sure your donations are used effectively. It is important to note that the local United Way office continues to be diligent in managing administrative and fund raising expenses. We understand the responsibility for proper stewardship of the monies entrusted to us. This commitment encourages maximum support to those programs that improve the lives of thousands of citizens in our local community. Thank you! Will Massie United Way Board President Thanks to the hard work of the 2013 Uwharrie Society Committee, the Uwharrie Socieity’s contributions once again provided over one-third of this year’s United Way campaign! In addition to the $396,000 you helped raise, you added 19 new or re-activated Uwharrie Society members…This is FANTASTIC! We were privileged to have been associated with this year’s committee and we cannot thank you all or the United Way office staff enough for your diligent work. We are grateful for your willingness to reach out and ask for contributions in a very difficult economic climate. You can take pride in knowing your efforts will give a helping hand to many deserving organizations and thousands of good Randolph County people. Sincerely, Susan and Charles Swiers 2013 Uwharrie Society Chairs Leadership Booklet 2014.indd 3 8/26/2014 8:41:46 AM AN INVITATION TO JOIN OUR REGIONS’S MOST INFLUENTIAL PHILANTHROPISTS United Way of Randolph County’s Leadership Societies are comprised of leaders from across our community who come together to help people today in ways that create a stronger tomorrow for everyone. Immediately, he recognized it as one of the keys to our democracy’s success and immortalized it in his book, Democracy in America. Three centuries later, it is that same unparalleled American Spirit that The Alexis de Tocqueville Society honors today. Established in 1972 by United Way of America, the Society recognizes the extraordinary generosity of individuals or family foundations nationwide that give $10,000 or more annually to United Way campaigns. It represents the highest level of giving for United Ways across the nation. The Uwharrie Chapter of The Alexis de Tocqueville Society was chartered in 1998 and currently has eight members. These generous donors join a national registry of philanthropic leaders who are changing the face of their communities through United Way. Kelly and Leigh Harris The United Way of Randolph County Endowment The United Way of Randolph County Endowment provides additional, sustainable resources that can help United Way meet community needs in ways not possible through our annual campaigns alone. Through the Endowment, donors have an opportunity to make bequests, memorial gifts, or other legacy gifts that will continue to serve our community for generations to come. Anyone can be a philanthropist…all it takes is a caring heart. And it benefits our whole community. United Way looks at the big picture: what resources are lacking or need strengthening, and how we can address those gaps to keep kids on track to graduation. Leadership Booklet 2014.indd 12 8/26/2014 8:42:01 AM ME asic moting ability A Catalyst for Change EDUCATION McCrary Elementary School is a high-poverty school that has historically been one of the lowest performing schools in the county. Once the Pre-K program began, student performance greatly improved, and the number of children performing at or above grade level increased significantly. Nearly 50 % of the entering kindergarten class participated in the program, which is provided by The Partnership for Children. Last year, first grade reading scores reached a new high, and McCrary’s third grade reading scores were the highest in the district. INCOME Cally is a recovering addict who needed a halfway house to help her maintain the structure she had learned and to have a support system. Alpha House welcomed her warmly and helped her adjust to her new life. The staff at Alpha House helped Cally find employment, manage her finances and develop financial independence, and learn responsibility and self-sufficiency. Today, Cally is clean and sober and lives at home with her husband and children. She is employed, and attends AA and NA meetings regularly. Her family is more financially stable, and she and her husband are working hard to build a good life for their children. HEALTH Roger was diabetic and uninsured. He could not afford his A1C tests, so his doctor had no accurate numbers on which to base Roger’s treatment. Through a United Way grant, Randolph Family Health Care at MERCE provided free Hemoglobin A1C tests to Roger and other uninsured diabetics in Randolph County. The results of these tests enabled Roger’s doctor to prescribe the right medication levels and keep his diabetes under control. Because everyone had the opportunity to take the tests, most of the clinic’s diabetic patients now have their diabetes under control.
