CASC also serves as a neighborhood gathering place for non-profit, civic and PanHellenic organizations. You can find a
rich diversity of neighborhood groups and participants who access the center on a daily basis. They participate in
community meetings, attend wedding receptions, birthday parties, Green Dolphin Lounge, special events and to hear
from the Mayor or a City Council member at a Central District Council, Leschi, Madrona, Junkins Park, Mt. Baker, Links or
Tabor 100 gathering. On any given day at the center there is rich diversity of age, race, class, culture, gender and
diversity of thought. As a community gathering place, CASC is positioned to engage, serve and bridge the gaps of the
historical founders of the center and that of new and emerging communities, while celebrating what each one brings to a
changing community landscape.
Contact Person:
Central Cafe , CASC’s in house-kitchen, serves hot meals, cooked from scratch five days per week except when the center
is closed. On Soul Food Tuesdays members and guest delight in an assortment of traditional Soul Food Cuisine. At
monthly Birthday Lunches, those celebrating birthdays eat free, select a gift of choice, and can dance to 60’s, 70’s, 80’s
and 90’s R & B, Jazz and Party Blues by Mr. Cliff Productions.

STAFF
Fall is my favorite time of the year. The leaves change colors; it
starts to rain a little more which is welcomed by all of the bulbs,
crocus, daffodils, tulips, dahlias and hyacinths that are planted to
delight and awe us as flowers in the spring. October is also the
Annual Membership Renewal Month at CASC. I am proud to say
that many of you have renewed your membership this year paying
the $60 membership fee. Others of you have become Lifetime
Members and paid the $500 lifetime fee at one time and/or are making payments
towards it. Thank-you! We will honor all lifetime members recognizing you with a free
brunch on Sunday, November 15th, 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm at the center. We welcome all
those who want to attend; however, it will cost non-lifetime members $20, youth
thirteen – eighteen, $10 and children twelve and under a dollar per year of age. We
want to say a special thank-you to our lifetime members for continuously supporting
us. In contrast, there are some, who walk in the doors on a daily basis, attend Green
Dolphin Lounge and participate in numerous programs and activities without ever
becoming a member. Unlike my mother, I’m not going to try and shame you, but I am
going to ask you to take out a membership. Now More Than Ever we Could Use Your
Help. Since May of last year we have managed to upgrade the facility and to offer
several new programs and activities. This was accomplished owing to your willingness
to renew your membership giving us additional financial resources to apply towards
facility upgrades and activities. Our plans are even more ambitious this year. We are
putting down new carpet, painting the interior, refurbishing the front entry with new
custom built furniture, and enhancing the walls with new signage, and a mural
depicting the friendship and fun displayed every day by members and community
members who frequent the building. Through the design support of IIDA
(International Interior Design Association, Northern Pacific Chapter) facility upgrades
are being made. They include dining hall windows covered by translucent window
shades, flexible upholstered benches in vibrant colors to provide seating in the
hallway and dining room decorated with colorful pillows. For those of you always
confused as to what gets recycled where, your confusion will be cleared up with tidy
garbage and recycling sorter bins. The entry is to have dome pendant lighting; the
dining hall is to acquire a wood coat wardrobe with closing doors so as not to display
what’s inside. It is through paid memberships that we will have the operating dollars
to underwrite the ongoing cost of program activities, building repairs, and new
initiatives.
Renew Your Membership Today! Become a Yearly Member or a Lifetime Member.
With Your Assistance We Will Thrive!
I promise the November Lifetime Members brunch will be fun. It will feature live
music, with CT Thompson, great food, tributes and recognition to those who have
contributed leadership to the center over the years. Everyone who renews their
membership in October and/or take out a Lifetime membership will be entered into a
raffle drawing for great prizes. Names will be drawn at the November 15th brunch for
a variety of prizes that include gift cards, Seahawks merchandise, and tickets to upcoming events at the center, jewelry, wine and liquor.
Celebrate what we have collectively achieved at CASC this past year while renewing
your annual membership. Share in the November 15th homecoming of former
members, new members, and those just wanting to check us out and see why CASC is
being acknowledged as the happening place in the neighborhood.

Health Article
“Taking Control of Your Health”
By: Carroll Haymon, MD
Iora Primary Care – Central District
In medicine, we call conditions that don’t have a
cure “chronic diseases” - conditions like diabetes,
hypertension, arthritis, and emphysema. As people
age, they tend to develop a long list of these, with
a pile of pills to match.
Too often, people with chronic conditions don’t
really understand them. Health Care professionals
sometimes make this worse by going too fast and
using technical jargon. But research shows that
your health will be better if you are an active
partner in managing your health. This means
understanding your chronic diseases, knowing
things like: Why does high blood pressure matter?
What can I do for diabetes BESIDES taking my
medications? What are all these pills for, anyway?
Your health care team should take the time to
answer these questions for
you, because learning about
your own health is one of
the best ways to improve it.

Associated Words
In each of these puzzles, a list of words is given. To solve the puzzle, think of a single word that goes with
each to form a compound word (or word pair that functions as a compound word). For example, if the given
words are volley, field, and bearing, then the answer would be ball, because the word ball can be added to
each of the other words to form volleyball, ball field, and ball bearing.

Our CASC Social Worker is here to listen and help!
Fall is upon us, but we’re still having some beautiful weather, commonly referred
to as “Indian Summer”. Despite the change in the weather, the “ROOTS Picnic”
was a lot of fun and we provided a variety of baked goods for the seniors to
enjoy. During the fall and winter months many of us experience death of family
or personal friends. Feel free to schedule an appointment with me if you would
like to discuss these issues. Talking about our feelings is crucial to
the healing process.
Also, if you have any medical equipment that you’re no longer
using, we’re happy to accept them, including walkers, wheel chairs,
shower benches, etc.
Charlotte is at CASC on Tuesdays & Wednesdays
from 9AM-3:30PM.
