Among the forums held since the first event in 2008, Innovation Takes Root 2014 (ITR) stands at the beginning of the second decade of commercial production for Ingeo. While in some ways we’re still the “new kid on the block,” this milestone reflects a growing maturity for the company, Ingeo, channel partners, and end users. New since ITR 2012 The Blair, Nebraska Ingeo production facility expanded volume and capabilities. The plant now produces a range of new high performance resins and lactide intermediates. NatureWorks has reorganized how it serves market segments. The company now brings additional commercial focus and technical resources to the needs of customers in such segments as rigid packaging, food serviceware, films, fibers and nonwovens, durables, and lactide intermediates. NatureWorks has also created a business incubator function to best serve new business opportunities such as 3D printing, toners, and building and construction, to name a few. The company progressed substantive programs against its long-standing goal of feedstock diversification. In 2013, NatureWorks kicked off the front end engineering work for its Southeast Asia plant which will transform sugarcane-based sucrose feedstocks. In addition, the company formalized and started investment in a multiyear joint development program that, if successful, will bring structural simplification to the Ingeo supply chain, enabling the direct conversion of GHG sources such as methane to lactic acid. Assessment of cellulosic sugars from locally abundant materials such as sugar cane to sugars, and wood chips continues. The channel to market is maturing as well as providing new blends, additives, and processing equipment. Research and development opens new applications especially when utilizing the high performance resin grades and lactide intermediates. All of these developments in one form or another will be part of ITR. One thing that has not changed between the first and second decade is the enthusiasm and interest in Ingeo. Bopp is a senior materials scientist at NatureWorks where he has worked on process and product development of Ingeo polylactide biopolymers for the past 17 years. Particular areas of technical interest have been PLA crystal nucleation, thermoforming, injection stretch blow molding, nanocomposite technology, biotoner development and recycling. Prior to this, Dick worked at the General Electric Co. for 21 years. Dick earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the State University of New York at Albany and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in polymer chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In her 12 years she has managed 970 baseball games. She is a member of the Green Building Alliance, the Green Sports Alliance and the Major League Baseball Greening Committee. Sissy is also a member of the Professional Recycling Organization of Pennsylvania and in 2009 she received the “Green Award” from CB Richard Ellis. Asean Corp, co-founded by Chandler in 1989, is a leading supplier of 100% BPI certified compostable foodservice products. Chandler is currently President of the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) and serves on its Board of Directors working at local and national levels on issues surrounding compostables in the solid waste stream. Chandler has degrees in business and political science from Lewis and Clark College, the University of Edinburgh Scotland and the London School of Economics in England. Hsiu Mei Chen Manager, Unic Technology Corporation Hsiu Mei Chen has been with Unic Technology for four years and serves as a product project manager in charge of managing PLA New Product and Market Development. She received her bachelor’s degree in commercial science from the University of TennesseeMartin. Previously Hsiu Mei Chen served as a Section Chief of Sales at Cheil Technology Corporation where she led a team for Samsung Cheil’s general plastic sales. High Heat Performance for Ingeo Food Serviceware In 2013, NatureWorks commercialized new high performance Ingeo grades designed for the injection molding and thermoforming communities. In this presentation, hear from NatureWorks and manufacturer Unic Technology Corporation on how they’ve partnered to introduce these new grades, what Unic has done with them, how the new resin properties translate into finished food serviceware articles, and where Unic sees these products going. 15 Peter Clydesdale Chief Commercial Officer, NatureWorks Peter Clydesdale is Chief Commercial Officer for NatureWorks. In his role, Mr. Clydesdale is responsible for the strategic oversight and global execution of sales, marketing, and applications development activities across key business segments including fibers, packaging, as well as semi-durable and durable products. Prior to joining NatureWorks in late 2002, Mr. Clydesdale worked at Cargill, Inc. in a variety of strategy, business development and M&A roles in both the U.S. and Asia. Mr. Clydesdale is an East Asian Studies graduate of Middlebury College and the holder of a graduate business administrative (MBA) degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Tomasz Czarnecki Sales and Technical Marketing Technology Manager, EconCore Tomasz is EconCore’s Technology Manager and has been with the company since 2006. Prior to EconCore he was at Composite Materials Group in Belgium and helped develop the first composite suitcase for Samsonite. Tomasz is a graduate from the Technical University of Czestochowa, Poland, in Materials Engineering. Adding Value (but not costs) to Bioplastics - Technology for In-Line Polymer Conversion into Honeycomb Boards The market of today constantly requires products with increased performance at a lower cost. EconCore’s patented process – ThermHex – matches these needs and achieves both due to a continuous, fully integrated conversion of thermoplastics into honeycombs. The honeycombs are in-line laminated with skins to create a sandwich panel – lightweight structure of tremendous mechanical performance. ThermHex is used in both packaging and automotive segments. EconCore will present the technology and its benefits with the focus on processing of bioplastic materials. 16 #ITR2014 Steve Davies Marketing and Public Affairs Director NatureWorks Mr. Davies joined NatureWorks in 2003 and now leads marketing & public affairs globally for NatureWorks. He is responsible for the strategy, direction and management of the company’s external communications, media relations, issues management, and brand. Previously as NatureWorks’ global marketing director, Steve was responsible for market development with Ingeo plastics in rigid and flexible packaging, food serviceware and durable goods, and with Ingeo fibers in apparel, personal care, home and garden. François de Bie Chairman of the Board, European Bioplastics Mr. de Bie is Marketing Director bioplastics at Corbion Purac. He holds a polymer technology degree from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. Before joining Corbion Purac, François held leadership, marketing and sales roles at EconCore, Sabic and GE Plastics. In 2013, François was elected Chairman of the Board of European Bioplastics. With over 70 members from across the entire value chain, it is the largest European association representing the bioplastics industry. The Rise of Bioplastics in Europe The European Bioplastics association will provide an overview from a recently completed study of the key trends and drivers for the European bioplastics market. Mr. de Bie will review the various bioplastic development programs and EUBP’s position and involvement in these initiatives, including the planned legislation to reduce the consumption of single use shopping bags. Facts and figures about land use for bioplastics, sustainability criteria and recyclability of bioplastics will all be shown. 17 Johan Declerck Business Development Manager Polymer Additives, Proviron, N.V. Mr. Declerck holds a Masters degree in chemistry and has a track record of over 23 years in research and development and Business Development of polymers, formulations, converting, processing and characterization of polymers. Johan’s current focus at Proviron is strategic business and product development of biobased plasticizers for the Polymer Additives business unit. PLA Plasticizer Strategies – A New Innovative Approach Numerous molecules to plasticize PLA have already been tested extensively in the past, yet with limited success. Proviron has developed different molecules to modify PLA successfully, hence broadening the applications range of Ingeo. In this presentation, the compatibility and performance of the candidate molecules will be discussed. For this purpose, the exudation profiles and polymer characteristics such as E-modulus, DSC proviles, etc. of the plasticized PLA compounds will be assessed and compared. Furthermore, the toxicological profile of the developed plasticizers will be presented. Finally, a strategy to implement these plasticizers, enabling their use in new application areas will be disclosed. Kerem Durdag Chief Executive Officer, Biovation II, LLC Mr. Durdag is the former CEO of BiODE, CTO of STEAG HamaTech, Inc. and Engineering Manager at Conceptronic. Durdag is currently on the Board of Directors for several private companies and non-profit organizations and is the founder of an event targeted to encourage entrepreneurship for high school and college students in Maine. He received his bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University (MN) and a Master in mechanical engineering from University of New Hampshire. Valued-Added Meltblown Nonwoven Product Possibilities for Ingeo The constant need for innovation from the nonwovens market drives us to satisfy our customers whether it be with the integration of antimicrobial chemistries or with additive technologies, which render specific desired characteristics to the Ingeo nonwoven material. The presentation will contribute to this knowledge-base by presenting a case study of an integrated product design approach utilizing multiple disciplines having the potential of yielding unique and value-added products. 18 #ITR2014 Bob Engle Vice President, Biopolymers, Metabolix Mr. Engle is vice president of business and commercial development for the biopolymers business unit of Metabolix bringing more than 20 years of experience in the materials industry. Renewable Materials for IT Applications There is an enormous opportunity to replace petroleum-based thermoplastics with renewable blends in the IT industry. Initial efforts have focused on blends of PLA with polycarbonate. Several candidate materials have been successfully qualified at both the part and system level. Implementation of these blends in existing applications has been hampered by cost-driven issues despite the modest material cost increase. Consequently, implementation will occur on the next generation systems where cost neutrality is not as critical. Development of Nanocellular Ingeo Composites Mr. McEneany will review Kimberly-Clark’s recently developed novel technology to generate micro and nanoporosity in engineered multi-component Ingeo composites through the use of state orientation as an alternate approach to traditional foaming via chemical or physical blowing agents. Both the engineered hybrid composites as well as the nanocellular materials display novel property profiles spanning multiple polymer classes. The engineered Ingeo composite for example shows ductility and toughness similar to polypropylenes while the nanocellular structured material provides significantly improved impact strengths with lower material density. The technology has enabled enhanced Ingeo composites in multiple application forms including fibers, films, and extruded articles. Tom G. Nucleating Agent for High Heat Resistance Application of New Ingeo HP PLA Grade Mr. Sakata will review Takemoto’s development work on NatureWorks’ new Ingeo HP grade and how they have modified its properties to expand high heat end use performance. Emphasis will be placed on modifying crystallinity to improve the strength, heat distortion, and cycle time of injection mold parts and sheet extrusion. He will also review biobased plasticizers, anti-stats, anti-fog, UV absorbers and flame retardants. 36 #ITR2014 Joe Schroeder, Ph.D. Lead Chemist, NatureWorks Dr. Schroeder has been with NatureWorks for twelve years. Joe has expertise in organic chemistry, synthesis, and characterization. Joe has led projects improving PLA thermal stability and investigation into functional additives. Joseph has a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Minnesota and has also completed post doctoral work at MIT. Practical Tools for Characterizing and Understanding Product Performance in Bioploymers Preconference Workshop Gayle Schueller, Ph.D. Vice President, Global Sustainability, 3M Dr. Schueller is 3M’s Vice President of Global Sustainability. She is responsible for the company’s integrated strategy to deliver customer solutions to meet their sustainability challenges and to operate in a way that advances environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic success for all 3M stakeholders. Gayle’s 20 year career at 3M spans a broad range of businesses from electronics to healthcare to consumer industries and various geographies from Europe to Asia to Latin America and North America. Gayle has a bachelor’s in physics, State University of New York at Geneseo and a Ph.D. in materials science from the University of Virginia. Innovation for Sustainability This presentation will cover 3M’s innovation model for sustainability including a deep dive into a case study of that model in action. The case study will cover 3M’s new product introduction process from understanding customer global sustainability challenges and idea generation through the development process, and end use customer and stakeholder engagement. 37 Randy Scott Vice President - Sales and Marketing Plastic Suppliers, Inc. Mr. Scott joined Plastic Suppliers in early 2013 to manage its sales and marketing of petrochemical and bio-sourced films, which serve a wide variety of global market applications. Earthfirst is Plastic Suppliers’ brand for bio-sourced plastic films. Prior to Plastic Suppliers he served in a variety of commercial and management roles at Sewell Plastics (PET blow molder), Klockner Pentaplast (rigid films), Alcoa Flexible Packaging (flexible packaging converter), Eastman Chemical (co-polyester resins for packaging), Pliant Corporation (polyethylene films and converting), and Exopack (flexible packaging converter). Mr. Scott has an A.B., in economics from Harvard University. What is Important in Selecting a Shrink Label Material? This presentation will provide a general overview of shrink labels and the reasons for the ongoing adoption in the market. The desired takeaway is to provide an objective perspective on the pros and cons of each of the common material types: PVC, PETG, OPS, and PLA. Wendell Simonson Vice-President of Marketing, Eco-Products Wendell Simonson is the Vice-President of Marketing for Eco-Products, a leading brand of renewable and post-consumer recycled foodservice packaging. Halogen Free, Flame Retardant Ingeo Compounds for Semi-Durable & Durable Applications Polylactic acid has proven challenging to replace engineering plastics such as ABS, PC and ABS/PC for semi-durable and durable markets due to low impact strength, low heat resistance and inferior flame resistance. This presentation covers the improvements made especially in achieving excellent flame resistance using non- halogen materials while maintaining a high degree of biocontent. 39 Jim Valentine, Ph.D. Lead Analytical Chemist, NatureWorks Dr. Jim Valentine is the Lead Analytical Chemist at NatureWorks. He joined Cargill Dow LLC in December of 2000 after serving as Research Associate at Dupont from 1991 to 2000 where he supervised mass spectrometry facilities at Chamber Works and Experimental Station sites. Jim served as a post doctoral research associate at MIT from 1989 to 1991 and received his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1989. Jim also has an MBA from the University of Delaware. Jim possesses expertise in analytical method development and modern chromatographic (e.g. GC, HPLC) and spectroscopic (e.g. MS) methods of analysis. Practical Tools for Characterizing and Understanding Product Performance in Bioploymers Preconference Workshop Marc Verbruggen, Ph.D. President and Chief Executive Officer NatureWorks Marc Verbruggen, with more than 20 years business experience, joined NatureWorks in 2008 as president and chief executive officer. Marc was born near Antwerp, Belgium, and received a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Delft, the Netherlands. In spite of his doctorate degree, prior to 2008, Marc never worked in the aerospace industry but instead occupied various managerial functions in the European and U.S. high tech materials industry. As CEO of NatureWorks, Marc has been a board member of the Biotechnology Industry Organization, Washington D.C., Industrial Section since 2009, and in this capacity testified before the U.S. Senate on how to help grow the U.S. bioplastics and green chemicals industry. He has also presented before members of the European Parliament.
