NORMS FOR EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION AT MASS
1. INTRODUCTION
1.2 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion have constituted an important ministry in the parishes, missions, stations, and campus ministries of the Diocese of Raleigh. This ministry compliments and extends that of the Ordinary Minister.
2. MINISTRY ELIGIBILITY
2.1 Men and women sixteen years or older and having received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and
Eucharist) are eligible for this ministry. They are to be Catholics in good standing who sincerely try to live the
Gospel message in accordance with the teachings of the Church. They are to participate regularly in the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist and the practice their Catholic faith. They are to be registered members of the parish in which they are commissioned.
3. MINISTRY REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Upon the recommendation of the pastor or pastoral administrator, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are appointed by the Diocesan Bishop before they serve. There is a term limit of five years with an option of renewal for an additional five years. Renewal is not automatic. As a result, Extraordinary Ministers of
Holy Communion must be reappointed by the Diocesan Bishop before they continue their service. If an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion has served for a total of two terms (10 years) and there is a serious pastoral
reason for an exception to the norm for maximum service, a request may be made to the Diocesan Bishop for an
extension of the term for each individual. Once approved by the Diocesan Bishop, Extraordinary Ministers of
Holy Communion must be commissioned at a parish Mass using the approved liturgical ritual provided in the
Book of Blessings.
3.2 While the norm is to have Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion function only in their parish/mission of
domicile and active participation, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may be appointed, upon the request of the Campus Minister (University, College, Catholic School) or Hospital Chaplain for service only at
their respective locations, following the same procedure as those appointed for parish/mission ministry.
3.3 Furthermore, there may be times when, at the request of the Priest Celebrant, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, who are appointed for service in the Diocese of Raleigh, may be asked to function at liturgical celebrations outside the parish/mission (e.g., at retreats, deanery and diocesan celebrations).
3.5 An individual should participate in only one liturgical ministry (e.g. Reader, Cantor, or Extraordinary Minister of
Holy Communion). This is meant to encourage greater participation of the members of the parish community as
an expression of their responsibility in the liturgical life of the parish. However, in those circumstances where
there is a dearth of ministers, an individual may perform another ministry.
3.6 Prior to their commissioning by the Diocesan Bishop for appointment, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
must be prepared for ministry by participation in formation either on the parish or Diocesan level. The Office of
Divine Worship welcomes the opportunity to provide training for parishes.
In addition, Ministry Training will be provided annually at the Diocesan Convocation.
3.7 Parishes should provide regular opportunities for continued formation and renewal. The Office of Divine Worship
has resources available to assist in this endeavor.
3.8 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are to demonstrate the greatest respect for the most Holy Eucharist by
their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated species, distributing Holy Communion
with dignity and reverence.
3.9 Apparel appropriate for ministry is business attire. Apparel not proper for ministry includes casual, scant, and unsuitable clothing: sneakers/athletic shoes, flip-flops, jeans, t-shirts, sweat/jogging suits, any clothing with logos
(e.g., sport teams), as well as anything promoting personal causes (e.g., politics).
3.10 Persons appointed to this ministry may be called upon to serve even though they have not been previously scheduled to do so. Therefore, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should come to Mass prepared and
dressed appropriately. If, for any reason, one is not prepared or properly attired, s/he should graciously decline
the invitation to assist at that time.
3.11 As with all liturgical ministers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are first and foremost members of the
worshipping assembly. Therefore, they should endeavor to model a respectful and reverent attitude (e.g., by arriving on time and participating fully in the Mass by listening, singing and responding from their place in the
assembly).
3.12 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion do not participate in the entrance procession or recession. They
should sit in the assembly with no designated place set aside for them. No liturgical vesture should be worn.
4. HOLY COMMUNION UNDER BOTH SPECIES
4.2 Pastors should instruct the faithful that the Catholic faith teaches that Christ, whole and entire, and the true Sacrament, is received under only one species and hence that as regards the resulting fruits, those who receive under
only one species are not deprived of any grace that is necessary for salvation” (see GIRM, 282).
4.4 The Bishop of Raleigh regards Holy Communion under both species as an admirable practice and accordingly grants
permission for Communion under both kinds in the parishes, missions, stations and campus ministries of the
Diocese of Raleigh at all celebrations of the Holy Mass.
4.6 Distribution of Holy Communion under both species is to be suspended when the Sacred Liturgy of the Mass is celebrated in non-sacred places which are not ordinarily associated within the normal course of a parish or school
liturgical life, such as gymnasiums, convention centers, hotel ballrooms, etc., unless permission has been
granted by the Diocesan Bishop through the Office of Divine Worship (Redemptionis Sacramentum, 108).
4.7 Additionally, consideration should be given to suspending the distribution of Holy Communion under both species
when the possibility of the Rite becomes “difficult because of the large number of participants”, such as Christmas or Easter (see GIRM, 283).
5. THE DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION
5.1 After the Priest Celebrant has received Holy Communion, the Extraordinary Ministers approach the altar and bow to
the altar (see GIRM, 162).
5.2 The Extraordinary Ministers receive Holy Communion in the usual manner. They must never self communicate.
They receive Communion from the Priest Celebrant, or a concelebrating Priest, or the Deacon.
5.3 Extraordinary Ministers are always to receive the vessel (ciborium or chalice) containing the Holy Eucharist for distribution to the faithful (GIRM, 162) from the Priest Celebrant, a concelebrating Priest or a Deacon. Utmost care
and respect regarding the sacred species should be taken by the minister while traveling to and from the station
to administer Holy Communion to the faithful. Specifically, the purificator is to be used to cover the chalice, so
that two hands are used to hold the chalice.
5.4 As the communicant approaches the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, the minister says, “the Body of
Christ” or “the Blood of Christ”, as prescribed in the Roman Missal. No other invitation, such as using the name of the
communicant or “this is the Body of Christ…” is to be used. After the communicant responds “Amen”, the minister then
gives Holy Communion to the communicant. The host or the chalice is not to be elevated in any manner.
5.5 Those ministering the Precious Blood wipe the rim of the chalice both inside and outside after each communicant
receives. The minister then turns the chalice a quarter turn in preparation for the next communicant.
5.6 Although it has been a common pastoral practice in the Diocese of Raleigh for Ministers of Communion to impart a
blessing to those who come forward with hands crossed in the communion procession and who are not receiving
Holy Communion, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are commissioned only to distribute the Body
and Blood of Christ to the faithful. The Extraordinary Minister may offer a brief prayer for those in the Assembly who come forward in the communion procession and who are not receiving Holy Communion, such as
“May God bless you” This prayer is to be offered audibly and may not be accompanied by the gesture associated with a blessing, e.g., the raising of the hand or the sign of the cross.
5.7 The distribution of Holy Communion is also not the occasion for any greeting or conversation by the Minister with
the faithful in the communion procession.
5.8 As health concerns dictate that Ordinary and Extraordinary Ministers of Communion not use their hand to touch the
head of the communicant and then distribute the Body of Christ to another among the faithful, so Ministers of
the Sacred Body of Christ are also to exercise great care of this sacred species by limiting their corporal contact
with the faithful to the administration of the Blessed Sacrament.
5.9 The norm established for the Dioceses of the United States of America is that Holy Communion is to be received
standing, unless an individual member of the faithful wishes to receive Communion while kneeling.
When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as gesture of
reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister. The consecrated host may be received either on
the tongue or in the hand, at the discretion of each communicant. When Holy Communion is received under
both kinds, the sign of reverence is also is also made before receiving the Precious Blood (GIRM, 160).
5.10 After the distribution of Communion is completed, the ministers return their vessels to the altar and return to their
place in the assembly in a reverent and prayerful manner.
5.11 The Deacon, or in the absence of the Deacon, the Priest Celebrant or a concelebrating Priest will consume the remaining consecrated wine and gather any remaining consecrated hosts for reservation in the tabernacle.
If any of the Precious Blood remains after the last communicant, the Bishop of Raleigh has given permission for the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to consume it from their chalice of distribution. This is to be carried
out standing at the altar.
DIÓCESIS DE RALEIGH: NORMAS PARA LOS MINISTROS EXTRAORDINARIOS DE LA SANTA MISA
1. INTRODUCCIÓN
1.2 Los Ministros Extraordinarios de la Santa Comunión han constituido un importante ministerio en las parroquias, misiones, estaciones y ministerios con universitarios de la Diócesis de Raleigh. Este Ministerio complementa y amplía el

1.3 Con este fin, los Ministros Extraordinarios de la Santa Comunión están comisionados para ayudar en la distribución
de la Santa Comunión en la Misa. Esta función es complementaria y extraordinaria y se debe ejercer conforme a las normas de derecho.
2. ELEGIBILIDAD DEL MINISTRO
2.1 Los Hombres y Mujeres de 16 años o mayores, que hayan recibido los Sacramentos de Iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación y Eucaristía) son elegibles para este ministerio. Deben ser Católicos que gozan de buena conducta, y que, sinceramente se esfuercen por vivir el mensaje del Evangelio de acuerdo a las enseñanzas de la Iglesia. Deben participar regularmente en la celebración de la Eucaristía Dominical y practicar su fe católica. Deben ser miembros registrados de la
parroquia a la que están comisionados.
3. REQUISITOS DEL MINISTERIO
3.1 Por recomendación del Párroco o Administrador Pastoral, los Ministros Extraordinarios de la Santa Comunión, son
nombrados por el Obispo Diocesano antes de servir. Existe un límite de cinco años con la opción de renovar cinco años
adicionales. La renovación no es automática. Como resultado, los Ministros Extraordinarios de la Santa Comunión, deberán ser re-nombrados por el Obispo Diocesano antes de continuar el servicio. Si un Ministerio Extraordinario de la
Santa Comunión ha servido por un total de dos términos (10 años), y existe razón pastoral seria para una excepción a la

3.3 Además, habrá momentos en que a petición del Sacerdote Celebrante, se solicite a los Ministros Extraordinarios de
la Santa Comunión que están nombrados para el servicio en la Diócesis de Raleigh, ayudar en las celebraciones litúrgicas fuera de su parroquia/misión (ej: retiros, celebraciones decanales o diocesanas).
3.5 Un individuo debería participar solo en un ministerio litúrgico (ej: Lector, Cantor o Ministro Extraordinario de la
Santa Comunión). Esto es para fomentar la mayor participación de los miembros de la comunidad parroquial como una
expresión de su responsabilidad en la vida litúrgica de la parroquia. Sin embargo, si existe una escasez de Ministros, un
individuo puede realizar otro ministerio.

3.10 Las personas nombradas para este ministerio pueden ser llamadas a servir aunque no estén programadas para ese
día. Por lo tanto, los Ministros Extraordinarios de la Santa Comunión deben venir a Misa preparados y vestidos apropiadamente. Si, por alguna razón, la persona no está preparada o vestida apropiadamente, él/ella deberá amablemente declinar la invitación a servir en ese momento.
3.11 Como con todos los ministros litúrgicos, los Ministros Extraordinarios de la Santa Comunión son primero; pero
sobretodo, miembros de la asamblea litúrgica. Por lo tanto, deben ser modelos demostrando una actitud respetuosa y
reverente (ej. llegar a tiempo, participar plenamente en la Misa escuchando, cantando y respondiendo desde su puesto en
la asamblea).
3.12 Los Ministros Extraordinarios de la Santa Comunión no participan en la Procesión de entrada o de salida. Ellos deben sentarse entre la asamblea sin un lugar reservado para ellos. No deben vestir atuendos litúrgicos.
4. LA SANTA COMUNIÓN BAJO AMBAS ESPECIES

5.3 Los Ministros Extraordinarios deberán siempre recibir los vasos sagrados (ciborio o cáliz) que contienen la Santa
Eucaristía para distribuirla al pueblo (Instrucción General del Misal Romano, 162) del Sacerdote Celebrante, de un Sacerdote concelebrante o de un Diácono. Con sumo cuidado y respeto el ministro debe tomar y llevar las especies sagradas de un lugar a otro para administrar la Santa Comunión a los fieles. Específicamente, el purificador debe usarse para
cubrir el cáliz y ambas manos para mantener el cáliz.
5.4 Cuando el comulgante se acerque al Ministro Extraordinario de la Santa Comunión, el ministro dice: “el Cuerpo de
Cristo” o “la Sangre de Cristo”, como está prescrito en el Misal Romano.
Ninguna otra invitación se debe usar, tales como llamar al comulgante por su nombre o “este es el Cuerpo de Cristo...”.
Después que el comulgante haya respondido, “Amén”, el ministro le da la Santa Comunión al comulgante. La hostia o el
cáliz no deben ser elevados de ninguna forma.
5.5 Los ministros de la Preciosa Sangre limpian el borde del cáliz por dentro y por fuera después de cada comulgante.
En seguida el ministro le da un cuarto de vuelta al cáliz y lo ofrece al siguiente comulgante.
5.6 Aunque ha sido una práctica pastoral común en la Diócesis de Raleigh para Ministros de Comunión impartir una
bendición a aquellos que pasan con las manos cruzadas en la procesión de comunión y que no van a comulgar, los Ministros Extraordinarios de la Santa Comunión están comisionados únicamente para distribuir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de
Cristo a los fieles. El Ministro Extraordinario puede ofrecer una breve oración por aquellos en la Asamblea que participan en la procesión de comunión que no reciben la Santa Comunión, tales como, “Dios te bendiga” o “Que Dios continúe el buen trabajo en ti”. Esta oración se debe ofrecer en forma audible y no puede ser acompañada por un gesto asociado con una bendición, por ejemplo, levantar la mano o la señal de la Cruz.
5.7 La distribución de la Santa Comunión no es el momento para saludar o conversar con los feligreses que participan en
la procesión de comunión.
5.8 Los problemas de salud dictan que los Ministros Ordinarios y Extraordinarios de la Comunión no deben utilizar la
mano para tocar la cabeza del comulgante y después distribuir el Cuerpo de Cristo a otros fieles. Los Ministros del Sagrado Cuerpo de Cristo deben también ejercer con gran cuidado esta especie sagrada limitando el contacto corporal con
los fieles en la administración del Santísimo Sacramento.
5.9 La norma establecida para las Diócesis de Estados Unidos de América es que la Santa Comunión se debe recibir de
pie, a menos que un miembro de la feligresía desee recibir la Comunión de rodillas.
Al recibir la Santa Comunión, los comulgantes inclinan su cabeza ante el Sacramento como gesto de reverencia y reciben el Cuerpo del Señor por parte del ministro. La hostia consagrada puede recibirse en la lengua o en la mano, a discreción de cada comulgante. Cuando se recibe la Santa Comunión bajo las dos especies, también se hace reverencia antes
de recibir la Preciosa Sangre (Instrucción General del Misal Romano).
5.10 Terminada la distribución de la Comunión, los ministros llevan los recipientes al altar y regresan a su lugar en la
asamblea con reverencia y oración.
5.11 El diácono, o en ausencia de éste, el Sacerdote Celebrante o un Sacerdote concelebrante consume el resto del vino
consagrado y toma las hostias consagradas que quedaron para reservarlas en el tabernáculo.
Cuando queda algo de la Preciosa Sangre tras comulgar la última persona, el Obispo de Raleigh ha dado permiso para
que el Ministro Extraordinario de la Santa Comunión la consuma del cáliz de distribución. Esto se hace de pie frente al
altar.
