In this month’s issue, we covered last months Independence day
celebration dubbed as “Sikat ang Pinoy” and some inductions
of newly organized associations as well as their activities. We
also have the first induction of officers of the biggest group in
Hong Kong, the Council of Filipino Leaders (CFL) which is
composed of different association presidents in Hong Kong.
As we continue to feel and enjoy our stay here in Hong Kong
with all of these activities that ease our boredom, homesickness
and loneliness. We still cannot deny the fact that we are affected
of what is happening in our country. In the past few weeks, our
country faced so many tragedies and devastation. We have the
typhoon Frank and MV Princess of the Stars tragedy.
We are also experiencing the unstoppable increases in the prices of oil, food and other basic
commodities and services which is placing millions of Filipinos near, if not below, the poverty
level. That is the bad effect of high prices. But on the other hand because of all these left and
right increases we have learned on how to be thrifty; to lead simple lives; to recycle and reuse
things; and to save and conserve natural resources and reduce pollution.
Rich families and even the middle class are being hit hard by the high prices of gasoline. Many
of them are leaving their expensive and gas-guzzling cars at home and taking the Metro Rail
Transit, Light Rail Transit or buses. Many of them already sell out their big vans and sports
utility vehicles which became the “in” thing in the cities only a few years ago and if they’re still
buying cars, they’re choosing the compact, fuel-efficient models.
In effect, formerly congested streets and highways like Edsa are now having smooth traffic
flow. The high price of gasoline has not only forced big private vehicles off the road but has
reduced air pollution in the metropolis. Our government came up with a temporary solution
for fast increasing prices of oil and manufactured the new electronic jeepneys to be used in
Metro Manila and we hope that it would be of great help.
We also became more economical in the use of electricity, cooking gas and water. The use of
air-conditioning is decreasing among the simple families. They learned how to save electric
consumption and shifted from incandescent bulbs to energy-efficient fluorescent lamps. Water
is also becoming an expensive and scarce commodity; families are recycling and reusing tap
water. For instance, people taking a bath save the runoff water and use it to flush the toilet
or clean the bathroom. As I always jokingly say of a new slogan “Conserve Water Shower
Together”
The impact in the price of rice has prompted many people to adopt wise and economical ways
of consuming the precious grain. In the past, when rice was low, many people would pile up
mounds of the cereal on their plate but consume only perhaps one-half and throw the rest
away. It was a very wasteful habit then. Now, practice has changed; people now get only the
rice that they can consume and eat the last few grains on their plate.
Even overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were not spared from the rising prices of basic goods
in the country. Because of the harder times, Filipinos abroad have had to come up with belttightening measures to be able to send more money to their families back home. Some have
taken second jobs or sidelines to help their families in the Philippines cope with rising prices.
So, my dear fellow OFW’s here in Hong Kong, let the experiences that we have surpassed be
our guide and strength to face the challenges that may come and go in our life. I want to advise
everyone to hold on, and keep your dollar earnings. Do not spend too much. Always keep
some income for savings. Save some of your income in Philippine banks as well as banks here
in Hong Kong. With your stay abroad for about two years or more, it’s better that you’ll keep
your money in a term of savings where you can earn more interest such as Time Deposit or
Funds. Some Philippine banks offer special savings program for Overseas Filipino Workers
and their beneficiaries.
It is not always safe to work anywhere, you will never know if you can have an accident in
the future that will prevent you to engage in any kind of job again. Having some insurance is
always a big help.
Do not give so much allowance to your beneficiaries that could only make them spend your
remittance for unnecessary things as well. You should let them know how hard it is to work in
a foreign land and earn that money that you are sending to them. You should let them know
how to spend wisely as well.
Involve yourself in entrepreneurial trainings and seminars to improve your skills and be
prepared for your eventual repatriation. You will never know that your current job will still be
on demand after one or two years. You should try to be knowledgeable of other types of skills
and professions.
Lastly please join me in congratulating our very own, World Boxing Hero, Manny Pacquiao
for giving our nation another world record in the history of boxing and for making all the
Filipinos around the world proud of being Pinoy.

MANILA, Philippines—As inflation soars
and gasoline prices climb relentlessly, more
and more commuters in Metro Manila are
squeezing into trains and buses, putting an
enormous strain on public transport services.
On the positive side, Metro Manila’s legendary
traffic jams are diminishing—but that’s only
good news for those who can afford to travel
by car in the metropolis of 15 million people.
Unlike consumers in many other Asian
countries that subsidize fuel prices, Filipinos
are forced to pay the free market rate for
gas. So far this year, they have been hit with
18 fuel price hikes for a total increase of
over 35 percent as global oil prices climb to
stratospheric levels.
With unleaded gas now costing over P61 per
liter, tens of thousands of car owners are
joining the queues for Metro Manila’s already
overcrowded aboveground train system.
“It’s a terrible journey,” said Nestor del
Rosario, a call center executive who traveled
to the Makati business district one recent

Saving time
Despite being squeezed into overcrowded
trains, commuters said they were saving time
and money.
Even the middle class, however, has been
rendered vulnerable to the fuel and food price
increases that have led the inflationary surge.
For those looking to cut travel costs, the
minimum train fare is a subsidized P12. But
because there are only three suburban lines
across the city, commuters then have to take a
bus or a passenger van to their destination at a
cost of a few more pesos.
“It’s crowded but that is compensated by the
short travel time and the cost,” said Nancy
Eleria, a professor of engineering at University
of Santo Tomas.
Not just for masses
Since fuel prices started increasing in earnest
in the second quarter of this year, the number
of passengers on the suburban system has
soared.
“The LRT used to be seen as transport for the
masses but now you can see more and more
people wearing ties and barong,” said Mel
Robles, administrator of the Light Rail Transit
(LRT) Authority.
“It’s no longer a matter of choice but of
necessity.”

network in Metro Manila—the LRT Authority
“With the MRT, it will take me 20 minutes, but
by car it could take two hours.”
The government has ambitious plans to extend
train services in Metro Manila, eventually
covering much of the metropolis. But such
plans will take years to materialize and cost
billions of dollars.
Officials worried
The surge in demand for trains is worrying
transport officials.
“The problem is that we can only take so
much,” said Roberto Lastimoso, MRT
general manager. “We have told the economic
managers that our situation is becoming
critical. It is an issue of national concern.
“At peak times it’s so uncomfortable, passengers
are jostling one another, passengers overflow
at street level. You have to deal with jostling by
other passengers and the smell of people.”

hand-held fans despite the air-conditioning.
During the morning peak hour, the queues
at entrances to the train stations trail down
staircases into the streets.

Dapat ding sugpuin ang illegal na paggamit
sa pangingisda. Sana ya magtulungan tayo
upang mapaunlad natin ang ating inang
bayan ang mng tayo ay muling magtamasa
ng kasaganaan.

Amidst the quiet hazy weather on June
8,2008, the PSU gathered eight teams at North
Point sea side open court for the opening
of volleyball tournament with the mission
of Migrant’s Ms. Cynthia Tellez as guest
speaker.

Eight teams are vying in the tournament
that will run roughly five months. They are
the BAWO, Bokod, ANIBA-HK, Ifugao,
Gabriela, Pingad, Havana d’bays and PSU.
Sports coordinator Grace “Dudz” Solang said
supposedly 12 teams signed up for the games
but four teams failed to make it at the opening
ceremonies.
The theme of the event is “Genuine
unity and sportsmanship”. The guest speaker
stressed that every player must not allow
personal grievances. The competition should
be friendly and should serve as a refuge when
one is feeling stressed out of work. Moreover,
the competition’s aim should be to promote
over all fitness and healthy way of spending
day offs. Friendship, she also said, must be
imposed to every team not only in the court
but beyond.
The games opened with a parade of the
different participating teams followed by
the search for the Best in Muse. The Best in
Muse was awarded to Ms. Flordeliza Tarnate
of PSU. Other awards were: Best in Banner
and Best in Uniform both won by the Bokod
team.
The volleyball tournament started formally
that day with four games. First game: Pingad
vs Bokod ,game won by Pingad (2-0); 2nd
game: Havana d’bays vs ANIBA- HK, won by
Havana (2-0); 3rd game: Gabriela vs ANIBAHK won by Gabriela (2-0); fourt game: Ifugao
vs PSU won by Ifugao ( 2-1).

isipan an gating panginoon upang makaiwas
sa anumang sakuna at manatiling malakas
sa pakikibaka sa hamon ng buhay lalo nat
malayo tayo sa ating mga pamilya.

Pacquaio Wins 4th Division Title
Filipino national boxing hero Manny Pacquiao
proved to be more lethal than defending WBC
lightweight champion David Diaz when he
made history Saturday night (Sunday noon RP
time) by winning his fourth division title with a
ninth-round knockout victory at the Mandalay
Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada,
USA.
After landing a right on the face of Diaz,
Pacquiao connected a quick left from out of
nowhere to the jaw of the Mexican-American,
who kissed the canvas 36 seconds into the
ninth stage.
Pacquiao, in a most brilliant display of his
skills, threw a flurry of punches at the onset
and cut Diaz’s nose in the second round.
Pacquiao proved to be too much for Diaz, who
suffered another cut over his right eye in the
following round.
Pacquiao made target practice of Diaz by
Round 5, but the real sturdy lightweight from
Chicago stood his ground and continued
to trade punches with the Pacman until the
eventful ninth stage.
The Pacman, who improved his record to 47
wins with three losses and two draws, wrote
his name in the record books as the first
Filipino and Asian boxer to win world titles at
four different weight divisions.

Pacquiao, coming off a split-decision win
over Juan Manuel Marquez in their thrilling
rematch last March 15, had won titles in the

Workers Meet to Draw Proposals

Alliance of Progressive Labor.
Asian Migrant Workers unite to submit a
recommendation to the 2nd Global Forum
on Migration and Development to be held on
October 29- 30 in Manila. The GFMD follows
the High Level Dialogue on Migration and
Development convened by the United Nations
in 2006 (New York), and the 1st GFMD held
in Belgium in 2007.
More than one hundred workers from
Indonesian Migrant Workers Union, Thai
Women Association, Far East Overseas
Nepalese Association, Filipino Domestic
Workers Union, and Hong Kong Coalition
of Indonesian Migrant Workers Organization
attended the consultation. Non- Governmental
organizations such as Christian Action,
Helpers for Domestic Helpers, Enrich, Asian
Migrant Center, Asian Migrant Resource
Center, Hong Kong Confederation of Trade
Union and Alliance of Progressive Labor
were also present to give their support together
with other migrants groups under the Asian
Migrants Center.
In Hong Kong Migrant Domestic Worker’s
Consultation on Migration and Development
hosted by the Coalition for Migrant Rights
and Asian Migrant Center on June 15, 2006
at the Henry G. Leong Building, Yau Ma Tei
Community Center, Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong,
migrants agreed to draft their concern between
their host and home country.
The meeting aimed to raise the awareness of
migrants on Globalization and neo- liberal
policies that directly/ indirectly affecting them.
Topics discussed on the consultation were; 1st,
the Economic Crises, Neo- liberal Policies
and Labor Migration, 2nd, was Migration
and Human Rights, and thirdly, The Right to
Development and Migrants Perspectives on
Development.
Migrant concerns will be presented to the
GFMD by Migrant Rights International and
Migrant Forum in Asia.
“It is very important for the migrant group
to go to the international level in lobbying
their cause. But they should not also forget to
lobby to the national level and change their
government perspective on migration.” Devi
Noviante from Christian Action said.
Globalization was defined as nothing but a
political project to some people, especially the
elites in particular which aim is just to change
society so that they can have maximum
profits.
“If we do not change the policies in our host
country, in our home country, if we do not
change the system that operates in our country
that creates poverty and forces us to migrate,
most probably, we will end up spending our
entire life working here just to feed our family

The Mindanao (HK) Migrant Alliance once
again successfully concluded this year Gokud
Pilipinas ‘08 last June 15, 2008 at Central, HK
in which 15 teams from different organization
in the OFW community participate.
This year's event major sponsor is cashsense
and was won by the La Union Federation of
Hong Kong (LUFOHK) who outwitted all the
opposing teams and completed the race within
157 minutes.
The Stanley Filipino Community who
used up a total of 201 minutes bagged the
second prize while RFC VIP Club who lagged
closely with 209 minutes settled for third
prize. Corresponding penalties were added
to the cumulative time consumed by all the
participating teams.
Gokud Pilipinas is an improvised
version of the popular TV reality show “The
Amazing Race.” It was design to challenge
the participant’s stamina, skills and strategies
on how to attain specific goals within limited
time and resources. It tests their resolve on
how to work in a hostile environment and how
to react under pressure. It teaches them the
important and value of teamwork, friendship
and camaraderie.
The organizers gave a quick final briefing
in Harcourt Garden, Admiralty before the race
officially started at 1:00 PM. Participants were
dispersed to their respective starting points in
Central, Wanchai and Causeway Bay and
thereafter moved on to locate their five (5)
specific stations, before proceeding to Quarry
Bay for their last mission. The player’s final
destination and finish line was the Chater
Road in Central.
Each visiting teams were required to
perform petty and silly tasks such as dancing
and singing in every station they visit. Teams
who failed to carry out the task assigned by
the Moderator will automatically received
additional 10 minutes penalty time.
After performing the assign task, the
Moderator will then asked the team to open
the sealed envelop and answer the prepared
question. Only upon opening the colored
envelop that the team acquired the information
or clue of the next location they will going to
visit. The process continued until they reached
the fifth station wherein a photo of a certain
place of their final mission was handed out.
The team would travel to Quarry Bay by
any means of public utility vehicles but were
banned to aboard express route busses and
MTR on their way back directly to Central.
They are also required to complete their
journey within the allowed budget or faced the
possibility of an additional time penalty for
every dollar they over spend.
The set of questions given to the
participating teams contained historical
trivia and facts about the Philippines and
Hong Kong. The quizzes are designed to test
the socio-cultural, economic and political
awareness of the group. It also tend to
refreshed their knowledge and understanding
of the Philippines.
This year race is somewhat difficult and
exciting because unlike the previous races,
no route map was provided to the players.
MinMA also experienced some snags and
glitches as some of the confirmed participants
didn’t show up or back out at the last minutes
and late moderator.
Some teams got lost or simply cannot
locate the place they are required to visit. This
is expected because as Lito Gapoy, the game
There were five members in each team.
Four act as the official runner and the other
one was an observer randomly picked from
the opposing team. The observer served as
the “eye and ear” of the team to ensure that
players abide with the rules and regulation set
by the organizer.
Some of the rules strictly implemented
were as follows, no red light beating, no
over-boarding, no running or jogging, no
solicitation, no teasing, no over expenses, no
substitution and no short cuts.
The observer was required to be
cooperative but was also expected to document
any violation committed by the team she is
observing.
The
winners
were
not
immediately
declared after the race as the last team arrived
at the final destination around 5:00 PM. The
game committee from MinMA, The Sun and
AMA finished tabulating the scores late so
the organizer failed to award the prizes and
medals to the winners on time. The awarding
was scheduled on the later date and place.
GoKUD winners will receive medals and
cash prizes; the first prize is $1500; second
prize is $1000 and third prize, $500. Engr.

THE SECOND TIME AROUND
Dear Bro. Rolly,
Good day to all the staff of FIM but most
especially to you. I am a widow for the last 14 years
when my husband passed away. I have two sons
who are both adult now. When I applied for work in
Hong Kong, I used my maiden name which appears
in my Philippine passport. Presently I have a
boyfriend who is a Filipino Hong Kong resident and
we have planned to get married before the end of this
year. My concern is about my boyfriend’s remarks
that it appears that I treat my two sons unfairly
because even as they carry their father’s surname, I
as their mother did not use their father’s surname.
I am puzzled by his remarks. Do I as a widow
have the right to use my maiden name in my
passport? Please advise me as I am really confused
and tell me also the legal requirements concerning
getting married in Hong Kong.

Dear Ms. Sagittarius,
The death of the spouse is one of the very
few legal grounds for the surviving spouse to
remarry; and so you may get married to your
boyfriend. I have to caution you though that
you have to be sure that he is single or legally
divorced as otherwise it is an act of bigamy
which is punishable by law.
You did not mention the reason why you
opted to use your maiden name when you
applied for a passport. We all know the
strict requirements in applying for a passport
which requires full documentations like
submission of a valid marriage license. It
may be I can only guess that like many other
married OFWs who secured their passports
using their maiden names, you were forced
to do it because you are in a hurry to fly to
Hong Kong for fear that your employer might
back out if there were such a delay caused by
passport documentation compliance. But
whatever the reasons may be, it is now moot
and academic because of your husband’s
death.
Your husband-to-be’s attitude is a
reflection of his insecurity that you might
not also use his surname in your official
records. You can impress upon him that you
are more than willing to use his surname
when you apply for a new passport at the
Philippine Consulate after your marriage
at the Marriage Registry when you have
secured your Marriage Certificate. Ask him
to accompany you at the Consulate when you
file your request for passport change.

About your marriage, both of you may
proceed at the Marriage Registry and fill up
and submit the marriage application form
together with your travel documents. There
is an standard clearance or waiting period
before solemnization of your marriage. Your
application for marriage will be published
and posted at the Marriage Registry for
viewing by the public. If there are no
objections and you have complied with
documentation requirement, your marriage
will be permitted.
May I remind you that whether your
wedding is done at the Marriage Registry
or in the church, it carries the same legal
weight.

DOCUMENT TAMPERING
Dear Bro. Rolly,
When I worked in United Arab Emirate last 1988
I was only 20 years old having been born in 1968.
Since I was under-age, the Philippine employment
agency made it to appear that I was born in 1966.
My passport carries my maiden name and the
wrong birth year of 1966. Now that I am married
with 2 children I want to change my passport so that
I can use my married name and my real birth year
as I am afraid there might be some complications
when they go to school due to discrepancies on my
identity.
Can you please advise as to what to do to correct
this discrepancy on my passport and secure a new
one.

Dear Daria,
The basis of issuance of a passport is the
birth certificate. The date of birth appearing
on the birth certificate is the same date copied
and written down by the Department of
Foreign Affairs on your passport. I can only
suspect that the agency which helped you
secured your passport could have tampered
with your birth certificate by changing your
birth year from 1968 to 1966 or that agency
could have secured a fake birth certificate
from other sources.
When you apply for a new passport and
request for the change in your birth year, the
DFA will require you to explain why there
is a need for such change. You will certainly
be asked to produce the original of your birth
certificate and from there they will find out
the tampering of the birth certificate you gave
them when your first passport was issued.
Tampering with or faking a birth certificate
and submitting it to the DFA to secure a
passport is a criminal offence. Submitting an
Affidavit or Sworn Statement attesting to the
real reason why your birth year was changed
is not an assurance that the DFA will issue a
new corrected passport. But you can give it a
try.
I would advise that when you enrol your
children in the school, do not use your
passport, instead use other documents for
official purposes now and in the future; e.g. –
your genuine birth certificate, your children’s
birth certificate and your marriage licence
where your maiden name and your husband’s
name are indicated.

How is the HK government fighting the
drug war?

The United States Department of
International Narcotics Strategy Report
of 2008 concluded that: Hong Kong is not a
major transshipment point for illicit drugs destined
for the international market, but a minor transit
point as some drugs flow through because it is a
major shipping hub. Reasons being: 1) efficient law
enforcement efforts 2) the availability of alternate
routes 3) and the development of port facilities
elsewhere in southern China 4)Some traffickers
continue to operate out of Hong Kong to arrange
shipments from nearby drug-producing countries
and 5) the Government of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region (HKSAR) actively combats
drug trafficking and abuse through legislation
and law enforcement, preventive education and
publicity, treatment and rehabilitation, as well as
research and external cooperation.
The above conclusion is due to HK
Government commitment to reducing the
supply and demand through a wide range of
action and programmes and by adopting a
multi-modality approach in the provision of
treatment and rehabilitation services for drug
abusers and dissuading people, from taking
or experimenting with drugs.
Overall Strategy and Coordination: the
Government adopts a five-pronged approach
which covers legislation and law enforcement,
preventive education and publicity, treatment
and rehabilitation, research, and international
cooperation.
Legislation and Law Enforcement: Effective
law enforcement curtails illicit drug supply
with the coordinated efforts of different
government departments such as Customs
and Excise, Police Force, Department of
Health, Legislative Council, Judiciary,
and others such as the Action Committee
Against Narcotics (ACAN). Cooperation
at the international level, through exchange
of information and experience, efficient
joint action against trafficking, enhances the
effectiveness of efforts in all fronts. Example
is a scheme of reciprocal appointment to
advisory committees between the Singapore
and Hong Kong Governments. The Director
of Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau is
invited to sit on the committee to exchange
experience with ACAN members. Enhanced

cooperation and communication with
external authorities result in the disruption
and halting of transnational trafficking
activities and arrest of criminals. Cooperation
with Guangdong Province and Macau
was strengthened through the mounting of
parallel law enforcement actions, sharing of
intelligence, and exchange activities.
To fulfil its international obligations under
the 1988 United Nations Convention
against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances, Hong Kong enacted
the Drug Trafficking (Recovery of Proceeds)
Ordinance and the Organised and Serious
Crimes Ordinance which provide for the
tracing, freezing, confiscation and recovery
of the proceeds of drug trafficking and other
serious crimes.
The Drug Trafficking and Organised Crimes
(Amendment) Ordinance was enacted in
July 2002 to enhance the effectiveness of
Hong Kong’s anti-money laundering regime
through amendments to the Drug Trafficking
(Recovery of Proceeds) Ordinance and the
Organised and Serious Crimes Ordinance
which took effect on January 1, 2003.
The Places of Public Entertainment Ordinance
(Amendment of Schedule 1) Regulation
2002, which came into operation in January
2003, brings dance parties at unlicensed
premises under licensing control. To dovetail
with the implementation of the new licensing
arrangement, the Narcotics Division issued
a revised Code of Practice for Dance Party
Organisers to promote self-regulation by party
organisers or venue providers.
Treatment and Rehabilitation: Hong Kong
adopts a multi-modality approach in providing
treatment and rehabilitation services to cater
for the different needs of drug abusers from
varying backgrounds.
The major drug treatment and rehabilitation
services include a compulsory drug treatment
programme operated by the Correctional
Services
Department,
a
voluntary
methadone out-patient treatment programme
provided by the Department of Health, and
voluntary residential programmes run by
non-governmental organisations including
Christian therapeutic drug treatment agencies.
Medical and psychiatric treatment for
psychotropic substance abusers is provided by
six substance abuse clinics under the Hospital
Authority. There are also five Counselling
Centres for Psychotropic Substance Abusers
operated by non-governmental organisations
which are subvented by the Social Welfare
Department.
The Drug Dependent Persons Treatment and
Rehabilitation Centres (Licensing) Ordinance,
which came into operation on April 1, 2002,
provides for the control of treatment centres
catering for voluntary residential treatment
of four or more persons, through a licensing
scheme administered by the Social Welfare
Department.
The Third Three-year Plan on Drug
Treatment and Rehabilitation Services
was implemented with new strategies to
improve the provision of drug treatment and
rehabilitation services.
Preventive Education and Publicity: The
Narcotics Division adopted a multi-faceted
approach in publicizing the anti-drug message
during the year. The division has continued
to provide school programmes to students
from Primary 5 to Senior Secondary levels
and the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational
Education (HKIVE). In 2003 the provision
of school drug education programmes was
expanded to reach students of South Asian
origin of the English Schools Foundation
and international schools.
With the Internet, the Narcotics Division
launched an interactive role-play game
at its revamped website which contains
more interactive elements and user-friendly
navigation, as well as a special section giving
anti-drug information and detailing the
harmful effects of psychotropic substance
abuse. Anti-drug campaign messages were
also publicized in buses, public light buses,
the MTR, and the KCRC East Rail and new
West Rail. A new series of the well-received
TV documentary entitled Anti-drugs Special
II was produced by Radio Television Hong
Kong under the sponsorship of the Beat
Drugs Fund to arouse public awareness of
the harmful effects of drug abuse.

Kong was either celebrating or protesting
against the HKSAR Establishment’s 11
anniversary, more than 200 Prime Gold
Plus (PGP) members and staff were
at Chai Wan Sports Centre enjoying
themselves and competing with each
other in fun parlor games.
the bonding forged by this team with their
fellow Hawks, which is the main essence
of the sports fest. Out of all the teams
in the Paligsahan, theirs is the happiest.
They were not able to take home a medal,
but in terms of camaraderie and fun,
they are most definitely the champion!
Such bonding and high spirits made them
the reigning champions of “kakulitan”.
“Makulit” is probably an understatement
to describe their attitude..

tested in the PGP’s Paligsahan, because
speed is also equally important. As the
name and color suggest, there is no better
way to flaunt speed than calling a team
“Blazing Stallions”. As a testament to this,

The Raging Bulls, true to their name,
took no prisoners when it came to brute
strength. None of the teams could match
their muscles, which provided them with
the much-needed edge in the Tug-of-War
battle. It took only a little over twenty
seconds for them to win their first game.
It was truly a great display of force and
raging adrenaline for the Bulls, making
them the reigning champions of the
strength division. The Bulls also ranked
1st in Amoeba Race and Ball Relay with
a Twist. This team was considered the
underdog, until they ranked 2nd over-all.
Last but not the least is the Growling

The Incredible Hawks were indeed
incredible in their efforts to compete with
the other teams. Never letting up in the
face of adversity, they were always up to
the challenge. Even more incredible still is

this team won the Ping Pong Ball Relay and
PGP Goes to Market, which require speed
and balance. From the first runner to the
last, all demonstrated speed well. Though
they were fast, they were not quick enough
to run to the top, earning them a bronze
Jaguars who reigned supreme in the
Paligsahan. This team’s prowess was seen
in the Patintero games which required
coordination and unity between members.
An equal balance between speed and
ferocity made this team too much to
handle for the other teams. The Jaguars
bagged the win for Sack Race, Patintero
and Volleyball. Having battled in the finals
they were able to defeat their major rival,
the Bulls, placing them in first place. The
Hawks flew away, the Stallions ran back,
and the Bulls charged off. The Jaguars
growled and scored their way into being

In his message, Gov Mendoza impressed his
fellow Bulakenyos with his news on how Bulacan
has transformed into a modern province.
He explained the concept of the “ Bagong
Bulakenyo” which means getting upgraded
in Information Technology (IT) which will
focus on the programs of the youth, in relation
to his newly formed Youth Iniative Program
Entrepreneur. The Governor emphasized the
need for entrepreneurship, health, business
and IT in his term. He also encouraged his
fellow Bulakenyos to concentrate on earnings
while here in Hong Kong and to influenced
all their family members in the Philippines for
entrepreneurial skills.
He also mentioned that he always addressed
the needs of his constituents by visiting every
Barangays to listen and look after for their
requests and act according to their needs.
He often receives request of cement for road
constructions and others, but he said that
there are more urgent needs than that. He
said instead of donating a cement for road
construction, He donated a classroom as he
saw the needs for it.
In his last message, the governor announces
that he is donating 100,000 pesos as the
starting fund of the group for the fulfillment
of their activities and project for their fellow
Bulakenyos.
Also present in the said gathering were: Vice
Consul Val Simon Roque who also expressed
his congratulation to the group, Engr. Brix
Chico, the president of Builders association
and one of the Advisers of BAHK offered
the services of his group for free engineering
seminar and consultation for those who plan
to build their dream house s.

Truths in Time of Tragedy
A
s of this
writing, the
Philippines
is still grappling with
the crippling losses to
lives and properties
that Typhoon Frank
(international codename: Fengshen) viciously
wrought throughout the country last week.
Deaths reportedly reached over 500, excluding
the casualties from the 862 people onboard the
sunken MV Princess of the Stars, the hundreds
injured and the hundreds still missing.
Damages to properties and infrastructures are
mind-boggling.
At such an overwhelming time as this, the
human side of us is naturally inclined to blurt
out the single most confounding question:
“Why?”
It is reassuring that where even the most
intellectual of possible human answers may
fail us, the Word of the Lord is a constant
source of counsel and courage. Yes. In our
time of tragedy, God offers healing truths …
straight from His Word. And what makes
these truths sweeter is the reality that they are
echoed by those who experienced the bitter
sting of tragedy themselves … yet learned to
lean in the everlasting arms of the Almighty.
Truth No.1: God’s sovereignty is never
negated by human tragedy. Charles R.
Swindoll, in the book Starting Over, wrote how
the widow of Dawson Trotman, after learning
of her husband’s death by drowning, only “…
replied in calm assurance the words of Psalm 115:3:
‘But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever
He pleases.’”
one has ever developed a deep level of spirituality
or holiness without experiencing a great deal of
suffering. When a person who suffers reaches a
point where he can be calm and carefree, inwardly
smiling at his own suffering, and no longer asking
God to be delivered from it, then the suffering has
accomplished its blessed ministry, perseverance has
“finish[ed] its work” (James 1:4), and the pain of
the Crucifixion has begun to weave itself into a
crown.”
In God’s unerring wisdom, He lovingly
uses life’s tragedies as one of His most potent
tools in shaping human lives. 2 Corinthians
1:9 validates the didactic power of tragedy
to those who are open to its instruction: “In
fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped
relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God,
who raises the dead.”
God as the Master Potter and we as the
clay, the LORD knows the exact and precise
moment when to take us out of the “fiery
furnace.” He knows when enough is enough.
Hence to the extent of our capacity to endure,
He individually deals with us. And He does
so, for the fulfillment of His purpose in us:
“The Lord will work out his plans for my life –
for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever...”
(Psalm 13:8a, NLT). Yes, through it all, God
is ever mindful of us. Where we see losses and
brokenness, He sees redemption and glorious
restoration: “For I know the thoughts and plans
that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and
plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give
you hope in your final outcome” (Jeremiah 29:11,
Amp).
“But He knows the way that I take. When He
has tried me, I will come out as gold” (Job 23:10,
NLT). “For You have tested us, O God. You have

made us pure like silver is made pure” (Psalm
66:10, NLT). “The melting-pot is for silver and
the hot fire is for gold, but the Lord tests hearts”
(Proverbs 17:3,NLT).
Truth No.3: Human suffering is for a
moment, but God’s goodness is for a lifetime.
The early believers, in 2 Corinthians 4:16-18,
worded it perfectly for us: “So we’re not giving
up. How could we! Even though on the outside it
often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the
inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes
by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are
small potatoes compared to the coming good times,
the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far
more here than meets the eye. The things we see now
are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we
can’t see now will last forever.”
Indeed, no suffering for the moment is
pleasurable. Yet, it is at such a time that we
must all the more humble ourselves before God
and completely submit our will to Him. It is in
learning to trust His divine goodness that we
experience His restorative power as mentioned
in Psalm 71:20, “You have allowed me to suffer
much hardship, but you will restore me to life again
and lift me up from the depths of the earth.”
Our country is going through a very difficult
season again. Yet my hope for restoration is
in the LORD, because He is infallible in His
goodness.
I pray that when the tempest is finally over,
may we all be found by God singing “It is well,
with my soul,” just like hymn writer Haratio
Spafford did as he passed through the very
spot wherein he lost all his four daughters to a
sea vessel collision in 1873. It takes a heart of
unshakable faith in God to do that.
Swindol recounted: “All of the anguish,
the sudden loneliness that normally consumes
and cripples those who survive did not invade that
woman’s heart. Instead, she leaned hard upon her
sovereign Lord, who had once again done what He
pleased.” This story does not mean that God is
pleased that people die. It does point us,
however, to the reality that a person who is
totally submitted to the sovereign lordship of
God is able to see beyond the losses and hurts

Jockey Club Town Hall concert on June 9th in
cooperation with SAFILA is the highlight of
their ten days “Concert Tour” in Hong Kong,
which graced by Hon. Alejandrino Vicente and
some staff and officers from the Consulate,
donors, sponsors, media, organizations, friends
and guests and got a tremendous applause from
the crowd and ended by a welcome party for
ROW.
Their performance at fu Hong Society and
Cheshire Home (Societies for physically and
mentally handicapped people) on June 10th
bestow the normal heart of those handicapped
people with a moment of joy and happiness and
give them the chance to have an interaction with
the physically challenged people.
On behalf of Kababaihang Rizalista Hong
Kong Chapter (KRHKC) we would like to give
our heartfelt thanks and to acknowledged each
and everyone headed by Hon. Sir Alejandrino
Vicente, Consul General of The Philippine
Consulate HK SAR, Consular Officers and
Staff, to the generous and kind hearted Sponsors,
Donors, Supporters of various departments,
companies, organizations and individuals,
media, friends, volunteers. It is with sincerest
and deepest gratitude to all of you, without your
help and support the project “Concert Tour of
Rondalla on Wheels (ROW)” in Hong Kong
would not have been a reality. God knows who
amongst you are.
Unhesitatingly I must thank and commend the
officers, members of KRHKC and our brothers
in Knights of Rizal for their extra and untiring
effort including their personal contributions and
deprivation to secure the success of this project.
“Never have so few inspired so many, to support
such a Noble project.”
This group has proven that it’s not the quantity
that counts besides it’s the quality. And especially
the moral deeds of support and the contributions
that the people have shown in this project prove
that there is a universal solidarity for the purpose
and for the sake of the common good.
Generally most organizations are embarked into
abundant obstacles, more or so to the leaders or
the heads. First in the line is the extreme moral
agitation, followed by distorted mentality, ruined
by petty and continuous destructive criticism,
and poisoned by extreme “Jealousy”, no matter
how noble your purpose is. But these must not be
the practice that will unbind the enduring quality
of the good intention of any organizations.
Looking forward for all extremities are the task
to take the risk, in able to reach its goals for the
real purpose and cause that we have pledged.
The word “CRAB MENTALITY” is a selfish
mindset of the negative behavior. What we
need is to challenge this “cancerous words”
by cooperation, participation to perform and
“RESPECT” one another for the betterment and
prosperity of any organizations.
Our tenet in Kababaihang Rizalista have
strengthen the bond to the virtues, values,
teachings and the wholeness of the principles
and the lofty ideals that envisioned to us by the
Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal.
“We were all sisters and brothers who need to
love and support one another” no matter what
race you came from.

Foremost it is an honor to give our praise and
appreciation to “ROW” a group of musicians using
stringed instruments from Bahay Mapagmahal,
a dormitory and an extension home project for
handicapped children and youth, and enjoying
free education in Elementary and High School
located at the back of the National Orthopedic
Hospital, Banawe Quezon City, Philippines. It
was run by the Philippine Society for Crippled
Children (PSCC) Inc. Professor Antonio Tallada
from the University of the Philippines first
trained them in 1978 and in two years time after
he passed away in 1977 Professor EnricoToledo
replaced him. Most of their members are
professionally stable and successful in their own
field of careers.
Music makes cultural differences merged for each
type of selection of songs that sooths and warms
up one’s heart and soul. And with there founded
talents they become well known and have received
different top awards, citations and certificates of
appreciations that challenged their capabilities
towards excellence in every performance.
They have been invited in different parts of the
Philippines, assisted in Churches, held various
Concerts and also help fund raising activities for
the community. They can play music of different
countries aside from their repertoire of local
pieces, native songs and classical collections
and have performed in some parts of Europe
particularly Germany and Belgium, and they
performed and celebrated their 25th anniversary
in 2003 by the invitation of Professor Tsuyoshi
Amemiya in Tokyo. And they come here to fulfill
their dream to celebrate their 30th anniversary on
Feb. 8, 2008, and to promote the culture of the
Philippines as “Ambassadors of Goodwill.”
They arrive in Hong Kong during the black storm
on June 7th at 10 am where the only access to the
airport is at the Tsing Yi station. Sir Alejandrino
Vicente gave the full support by eying us thru Ms.
Rennie Dela Cruz, Cultural Attaché HK SAR.
Because of the bad weather, Mr. Danny Baldon
(delegate from the Consulate) was the only
one who managed to reach at the airport and
welcome the ROW together with the KRHKC.
They took pride of their Disney land performance
on June 8th by passing the audition in able to
perform and enjoyed some few hours of exploring
the place and have some photo moments together
with those great cartoon characters. And on
the same day of June 8th in the afternoon they
performed in the Kwela at Saya by Mr. Henry
Lobrin for the OFW crowd in celebration of the
Philippines Independence Day. The Sai Kung
They spent some pleasure and educational time
at Tsim Sha Tsui on June 11th, by tracing the
hand mark of several well-known people in Hong
Kong at the Avenue of Stars and discover some
cultural heritage of its people at the Cultural
Center of Hong Kong. They enjoyed their time
by watching a movie and the exhibition in the
“Planetarium.” They also boarded on a Ferry
and discovered the beauty of Hong Kong site.
They have their recreation activities at the
Physically Handicapped and Able Body (PHAB)
on June 12th. PHAB is a camping place and
rehabilitation that provides accommodation for
handicapped and able one in Hong Kong.
They performed at PoYan Catholic Church for
primary school on June 13th arranged by Sr. Letty
and Sr. Rose ICMs. The students exchanged
their talents thru some of their traditional songs
and instruments, as Hong Kong is also a multi
cultural place.
They were invited to perform at the Catholic
Church by Fr. Emil Lim (Chaplain to Filipino
Migrants in HK) on June 14th in front of the
OFW and several Archbishops and nuns from
the Philippines. Fr. Emil provided all the food
and transportation on that day with the Saturday
group volunteers and has provided their one
night accommodation.
Their last performance is the celebration of the
Philippine Independence day at Chatter Road
on June 15th and have their farewell party at
PHAB in the afternoon and gave their thanks
of appreciation to all the people who maid
this project possible. And they flew back in the
Philippines on June 16th.
It is with great pleasure and honor to be a part
of their dream that demonstrate courage and
determination for the unsound people to have a
greater sense of faith and hope despite of one’s
disability. Their vivacious outlook in life served as
inspirations to each and everyone. We would like
o give our praise and appreciation for the sincere
desire of Sr. Roos Catry ICM (Head/Manageress
of ROW) who’s a stranger in one’s native land
that shows no cultural barrier. By doing noble
deeds who shared her life adapting and helping
people who are physically challenged. It is an
act of devotion and love that leads to unity and
prosperity of all races for the sake of humanity.
May “Rondalla on Wheels” prosper more and
explore its horizon to be the beacon light of hope,
for the posterity of those physically challenged
and able people and serves as an inspiration to
all.

niyang masaya ang mga kasambahay kapag
dumadating siya.

ng Hongkong, dinagdagan si Angie taon-taon.
Ayon sa amo, nagustuhan daw nila ang ipinakitang pagmamahal ni Angie sa dalawang
bata at hindi niya maiwan ang mga ito at lalo
na sa hindi paghahabol ng long service.
Nakatapos bilang guro ang bunso ni Angie noong nakaraan Marso, pinayagan siyang

PAGKATAPOS ng mala-martial body ni Robin Padilla sa Joaquin Bordado, gusto naman
ni Robin na maging mala-muscleman ang kanyang katawan para sa bagong soap niyang Totoy Bato.
Hindi mahirap kay Robin ang gagawin niya pagpapalaki muli ng katawan. Kasi,
kakailanganin niya ng four months para mag-ensayo. Gusto niyang gawin ito sa
Australia . Siyempre, gusto niyang kapiling kanyang asawang si Liezl at kanyang mga
anak.
Pero, bago niya gawin ang Totoy Bato, isang movie muna sa GMA Films ang kanyang
gagawin. Gusto niyang matapos agad ang pelikula para makapagstart na siya ng training
sa Totoy Bato.
Ani Robin: “Ibang Totoy Bato ang mapapanood sa TV, hindi lang siya boksingero.
Marami pa siyang nalalamang self-defense.”
Dahil sa pagiging professional ni Robin sa kanyang trabaho, marami tuloy humanga
sa kanya. Kasama na rito ang leading lady niyang si Iza Calzado sa Joaquin Bordado.
Alam ba ninyuo na hanga si Iza sa desikasyon ni Robin. Halos di na matulog ang actor basta ma-perfect lang niya ang kanyang
eksena hanging editing room ng GMA 7.
Sa ending ay ayaw sabihin ni Iza kung ano ang mangyayari sa love story nila ni Joaquin. Abanganan na lang ang live ending
sa July 11 na gagawin sa Studio 3 ng GMA 7.

Kong flocked to Newton Hotel, North Point
Hotel for its first induction ceremony last July

Memories, I left behind
When I was a little one, jolly and bubbly
Who would always want for a weekend walk
or a picnic at the park
Coz I never had such memories, when you left
us behind
I’ve always been excited
When I excel in school
And I’ve always wanted to show my classcard
But you’re no where to be found
More than 160 spectators comprised mainly
of Filipino leaders from different association
attended the event.
On that particular day, a revere tribute was also
organized by CFL dedicated to the following
officers from the Philippine Consulate who will
be leaving Hongkong soon. These great officers
were well-loved by the Filipino community
due to their dedication and sincerity in serving
the needs of the OFWs headed by ATN officer
Madam Erlinda Albay and Madam Antonette
Villa.
It was also a tribute to the hardworking
staff of the Philippine Consulate: Arneil
Torres, Rose Torres and Divina Corpuz. The
vivacious tribute was poignant and mostly all
the attendees felt the emptiness of again losing
these hardworking public servants who are
really dedicated to their work, friendly and
approachable.
The program kicked-off with an invocation
lead by Marites Elvina of the St. Anne Group
and an Islam invocation led by Aziz Tuano
from MUSFILA. It was then followed by the
singing of the Philippine National Anthem
led by PCA President Nena Latonero. With
enthusiasm and determination, an inspiring
welcome message from CFL Chairman
Arnold Grospe became an an eye-opener to
all officers and members of the group. His
message was about solidarity, he reiterated
and explained further the significant meaning
of this word. According to him, he expressed
that “solidarity is a word that bears a very

significant meaning especially among people
who organized themselves to form a group in
order to achieve a common goal. The purpose
is noble but there are a lot of things to consider
or to tackle in order to maintain the unity
and harmony among members. You have to
deal with diverse personalities with different
purposes and sentiments.”
Raffy Esteleydes, President of OMHKS
and external Vice-Chairman of CFL-HK,
remarked the brief history of CFL, how it
was founded and organized. Madam Cora
Carsola, OWWA land-based representative
and CFL Adviser, gave an inspiring message
to the departing PCG officials.
One of the inspiring messages that was wellapplauded was the closing remarks of Internal
Vice Chairman Nazzer Ampang of Mindanao
Alliance. His message stated that “As we
culminate this event we are opening the door
towards the new level in our relationship
and together explore the many opportunities
that await us. Give your support especially
your trust for this group to succeed, value
our friendship and camaraderie for this is the
foundation of this group.”
The other guests and sponsors who attended

group as well.
To add fun, enjoyment and merriment to the
program, different groups also performed and
showcased their talents in dancing, singing
and ramp modelling. Raffle draws were also

was the Inspirational Speaker.
Everybody turned formal and serious when
Bro. Allen Manabat began the Praise and
Worship portion. His heartfelt prayers and
testimonies led the audience to tears, tears
of joy, happiness, realization, gratitude and
repentance for some who knew deep down
in their hearts, that they have offended God
at some point in time.

Hong Kong chapter took a break from
their regular fellowship meetings at
St. Bonaventure Church, Wong Tai Sin on
Jule 1st, 2008. Instead, they all flocked to
Caritas Community Hall, #2 Caine Road,
Central, to celebrate their 16th anniversary
by performing a musical and liturgical
concert entitled, “One Desire.”
Alibaba Hong Kong Inc, her daughter, Jane
(known as our very own Susan Balena’s
baby), and leaders of the different religious
communities contributed to supporting the
breathtaking performances.
Finally, the healing prayer, led by Msgr.
Albert Venus, was the climax of the day.

procession to the altar during the Bible

the appearance of Mr. RL included Mr. Alex
Valencia, manger and marketing officer of
First Metro Bank, with colleague Ms. Babes
Mercado, who takes on a different role in
the company as an Assistant Manager
and Marketing Officer. Last but not least,
the appearance of Ms. Elsa Wong, Senior
Legal Director, Company Secretary of

The solo performances and testimonies of
the Heart and Soul Band’s brought tears to
a large portion amongst the audiences. The
beautiful and colorful gowns of the singers
were truly remarkable and professional.
All the liturgical dances were beautifully
presented along with the creative and
qualitative costumes. However, the scene
stealers were Renzo Lobaton, the 7 year old
and youngest member Loved Flock HK who
went under the spotlights in his charming
rendition of “To Love You More” and
intricate dance steps while holding the hands
of his little friend; and, Katie Valerie Ho,
the 9 year old active member in the Music
Ministry, captivated the audience with her
song entitled, “Forever’s Not Enough”,
who is more than capable of giving Sarah
Geronimo “goose-bumps” after hearing
Venus began the spread of love and prayers
for one another, the crowd united through
God’s hands.
